Dragon Age III: Inquisition Officially Announced

Today has seen BioWare formally announcing Dragon Age III: Inquisition via its official Dragon Age website, revealing the game's subtitle for the first time, with the developer confirming a few basic essentials about the third game in the Dragon Age series.

Here's what BioWare is currently prepared to say about Dragon Age III, revealing that it'll utilise DICE's increasingly popular Frostbite 2 Engine:

  • The next game will be called Dragon Age III: Inquisition.
  • We won´t be talking about the story of the game today. Though you can make some guesses from the title.
  • This game is being made by a lot of the same team that has been working on Dragon Age since Dragon Age: Origins. It´s composed of both experienced BioWare veterans and talented new developers.
  • We are working on a new engine which we believe will allow us to deliver a more expansive world, better visuals, more reactivity to player choices, and more customization. At PAX East, we talked about armour and followers? Yeah, that kind of customisation. We´ve started with Frostbite 2 from DICE as a foundation to accomplish this.

We'll keep our ear to the ground for more Dragon Age III: Inquisition developments, but for now, enjoy the lovely logo below.

[Thanks, Earth Djinn]

Why are they shoving Frostbite 2.0 down this game's throat? Nobody cares about the engine of Dragon Age, yet among the smallest details they've provided here, they think it's most important to point out that this game uses the same engine as a military shooter -_-

*facepalm* Why EA?!?!? WHY?!?!?!

@1 you mean opposed to what games using the unreal engine... which was developed for a shooter or the cry engine... which was for a shooter or the multitude of PC games on the source engine.. also for a shooter

the engine a game runs on is very important but its original purpose isnt some are just good for a lot of different types of game unreal and source are perfect example of this

We already knew they were working on DAIII and most assumed it would use FB2. Hard to get hyped or upset with so little info. I liked DAII, unlike most it seems, but considering they canned dlc over the backlash and are sticking MP into everything, I'm not liking my chances of DAIII being what I want it to be. We'll see, I guess.

I can only see a modified Frostbite 2.0 for this as a good thing, the DA engine was very limited. Just because DICE uses it for the BF franchise doesn't mean it can't be adapted to fit a 3rd person RPG. Imagine the landscapes it renders in BF3 and make those into inhabited lands full of crazy shit to hack and slash. The thought makes me all giggly. :)

I can only hope they've listened to the criticism of the previous game this time.

While the controls were a bit shit on consoles, lets brings back some of the gameplay from Origins. Rather than Dragon Age 2's press "A" for awesome, do anything button.

Bring back choices that actually matter for gods sake too. While I'm at, lets us customise our parties armour again.

Not exactly the point of the topic I know, but I don't really want to see this series or Bioware go further down the drain.
Also add some actual varied environments, don't just move things around and block some paths off and call them "new".

I love love LOVED DA:O(thought DA2 was good but nowhere near as great as Origins), so hearing the announcement for DA3 is awesome! Im preordering this game as soon as its available to do so then upgrading to a collectors edition if they have one. Its gonna be great I just know it! :D

Btw, with 'Inquisition' being part of the title and considering how DA2 ended (and began) and the recent release of the animated film 'Dragon Age:Dawn of the Seeker' id say its safe to assume the 3rd game is going to focus on the Seekers.

they need to really make it more like the first and alot lot lot less like the second....You should be able to get pieces or armor for all followers and equip them as you see fit, not just whole 1 piece armor that you can't mix and match - horrible..But that's just like most developers now a days dumbing everything down for the people who don't want depth and don't want to have to read the manual or learn how to play, they just want to pick up the controller and be able to beast through it and its a shame really
the gaming industry is going downhill in terms of gameplay, depth, and innovations. There's too much emphasis on graphics and textures, while these things are a must, they need to be second thought to gameplay, storyline, depth and innovation
I'd rather have a great game with tons to do and many layers of gameplay instead of pretty skies and perfect rippling water, I could care less how real the water looks or how trees blow in the wind as long as the core game is there it'll be good (not saying I was 2d or n64 graphics) just focus on what's important first and you won't go wrong

really sorry for the huge huge huge post, just had to get that off my chest

Great news and I cant wait to hear more about Inquisition's setting in the series.

Another good game from Bioware.

And to the people complaining about hur hur it will just be dumbing down everything and game direction blah blah. WELCOME to how I've felt with your precious Bioware games since Baldur's Gate 2 SOA. Enjoy it for what it is and get over yourselves.

The first one was an excellent rpg, but the second was a piece of hack and slash garbage. The games were so different. I feel like they abandoned the players that made the first game a hit to try and appeal to a larger demographic. I hope they go back to what made the first one great. Sure graphics matter, but for me its all about gameplay. For now i'm gonna be skeptical until they release more info, cause i still feel ripped of from Dragon Age 2.

If its not broke dont fix it!!!

The key to DA:O's success was that it was highly reminiscent of Baldur's gate... Which IMO was one Bioware's greatest works...

They need to stick to the original elements in DA:O and keep the game play complex and the environment expansive... Not cramming the player into one town and toning down combat to simple hack n slash gameplay...

I am very hopeful that they will take advantage of all Frostbite can offer a game like this. I don't really care if we have destructible buildings and environment (though that would be awesome) but I would be really impressed by game-related integration. Just think of multiple, separate and physically variable pieces of darkspawn flying through the air. Or maybe capes and clothing that follow the contours of movement or earth and ice magic. Okay, I'd be cool if they just used this engine's physics programming for magic.
Anyway, we're assured it will look pretty and have some amazing visual effects. Now we need to know how it will play and whether or not there is an imaginative brain behind that face.

unfortunately DA:O was a one hit wonder for the series, apart from a few bugs it pretty much nailed the fantasy RPG gaming perfectly, huge story, even bigger world where there was at least 4 different stories to experience, good dlc support, decent enough graphics and enough things to do to see out well over 100 hours.

my only criticism was the combat got a bit wonky sometimes as it was clearly made for PC, BUT the game was that good i overlooked that hiccup.

DA:2 just shit, sequals are supposed to build and expand on whats been laid before it, not limit and restrict.

DA:3 will have multiplayer, enough said, it doesnt need it, most wont want it, EA will force it because heaven forbid they can no longer create games without a multiplayer.

mass effect has followed a somewhat similar route only mass effect 2 was probably the best imo.

Looking forward to more details about this. Got into DA very late when I bought Origins for a tenner in GAME this January just gone. LOved it, bought all the DLC and maxed out all the GS. Then, DA II...Not terrible but very mediocre. Hoping the third installment returns to its roots a lot more.

sounds good i just felt it as kinda back asswards that you went from being a uber badass Grey Warden, to just some guy named " Hawke ".

hopefully 3rd times a charm and we will be returning to being a Grey Warden or rather see " Hawke " under go the right of passage to become a Grey Warden i think that would b sickkkk.

also about FB2, i think there using it because there is going to be some massive area to explore and they want them to look as best they can also with the destructive capabilities of FB2 maybe it means they'll impliment huge wars/battles into the game and the use of destroyable building and the use of Tribuche's/Catapults.

but i rented first game which made me buy the 2nd and all dlc for it so ill prob show the 3rd game just as much love unless it looks like an utter pile'o'shit lol

I loved DA:O and played tyhrought it multiple times including DLC, but to be honest I can't remember alot about DA2 or even what the ending was and I traded it before all the dlc was released.
I am skeptically looking forward to this hoping like many others that it is more an RPG and less and action based button masher.

For those stating it's BioWare making it, not EA, do remember that EA OWN BioWare. It's not just a publishing deal. EA say it has tacked on MP and gets released months before it's ready, then it gets MP tacked on and is released in little more than alpha form.

Dragon Age Origin story with a dragon age 2 combat system. Make it happen bioware, stay back EA. Bioware's first entries always have an epic narrative, but flawed combat, while sequels have a pratically non-existent storyline. They usually have just the pretense to make the 2nd game, and since they first's are so critically acclaimed they focus on pumpining out the next one and streamlining the combat. Without much planning beforehand to the overall story. Storyboard and write good subplots for longer dammit! Dont let EA rush you! I'd rather wait longer for a good game than see 2 games that could have been classics.

apparently you are unaware that bioware is a division of ea. they are one in the same. people blame ea for forcing multiplayer into singleplayer games, and then making the single player dependent on that premium multiplayer content. the higher ups at ea hold alot of influence in the direction the game will take, and that isn't a good thing.

i hope the real talent from bioware leaves and starts a new company void of ea's meddling. maybe even get a real kotor sequel going.

Well as long as they listened to most of their fanbase and make it more like DAO rather than DA2 then they should be in the win. I mean I understand dumbing game down for console players, because they just odn't like to point and click, but gameplay was like a joke instead of stellar first game... Unless they decide to go separate way entirely.

You realize that there was an average total of about 6 maps that the MAJORITY of the game took place in? The whole game felt like a bunch of "go there and come back" meaningless missions that wore my enthusiasium down just a little every time I was sent on some BS errand.

But the thing that killed it for me was the loading. Going from Uptown, then to Downtown, then to Hanging Man Inn, with each area taking a minute to load isn't that bad. But multiply the experience of the whole game and your looking at hours watching loading screens.

DA is still a great series with amazing story, depth, and gameplay. Hopefull III will bring it back up to the standards I expect from BioWare.

Nobody expects The Dragon Inquisition!
- Hopefully this one will be more like the first one and have... well, more than 5 dungeon designs.

It would be awesome if we got to play as Morrigan's child, even if you didn't take that route in Origins, she still could have conceived some other way. That would really tie all of the games together.

I love Bioware, and even if I voice my concerns sometimes, i will always support them. Through good and bad, i believe in the studio, their intentions, and their products.

Cool stuff! I have been somewhat negative about Bioware in recent years, the truth is they still make great games, and I will still be playing DA for sure.

Just please use a writer who doesn't quit at the very end of the story.
