Microsoft is preparing to launch its Xbox Music service on October 26th, according to the latest reports.

Citing “multiple sources familiar with Microsoft's plans,” The Verge report that the new service will launch at the same time as Windows 8.

The report also states that Xbox Music will offer the choice of a free service with ads, or an ad-free subscription model, similar to Spotify.

Not just confined to Xbox Live, the service will also be accessible across Windows Phone and Windows 8.

You can also save your music collection in the cloud, via Microsoft’s SkyDrive service, and access songs from multiple devices, including iOS and Android.

An update for the Xbox dashboard and Windows 8’s Music and Video apps will be released before the launch of the service.

Along with the release of Windows 8? Does that mean the Surface is on it's way soon too?

If this will run in the background while I play games, I will use it all the time.

@ 3+2. That's what iPods, MP3 players, laptops, PC's tablets, strereos are all for. I suppose have a background music app would be decent but not necessary. I was slightly Dissapointed that couldn't be played in the background. But then I just got it on my laptop. This music service seems knda mweh to me. Don't think it will kick off there are far too many already highly popular music services.

@1 & @5

The entry model surface is released around the 26th to coincide with the windows 8 release. The all bells and whistles model comes out early next year (according to reports)...I'd probably hold off for the more powerfull version!

Not to be a downer, this looks pretty great, but I wouldn't get my hopes up on this running during games or involving local downloads. The 360 is pretty much pushed to the limit the way it is already set up. Maybe next gen will be set up for running apps and games simultaneously, but this gen... I don't see it. I would love to be wrong. Local downloads should be do-able, but they should've been do-able from Zune already, yet it never happened. Like I said, I wouldn't hold my breath.

@6 I concur!

I'm worried with how things are going with this xbox and the rumours I've heard about the next. Entertainment hub?! Give me a break I just want to play video games!!! If I want to watch football I've got sky TV and bars, listen to music I've got an ipod and stereo, films well I usually buy them on bluray for better quality, Facebook and twitter can f**k right off too!

Isn't anyone else worried?

No use for this. And if I'm already paying $60 a year for XBL Gold, then they should make the ad-free service free.

@6 & 10, if you stream music while playing, not only do you get the most out of your kick ass sound system, but the music will stop during cut scenes and important dialog. This is really nice stuff. Last.Fm is nice for cleaning the house or at a party. My Xbox is connected to my receiver so anything I play from it will pump through my whole house.

@10, I one Xbox almost exclusively as an entertainment hub. It's fantastic. Why worry? I don't understand why people rage when Xbox offers something they don't use. Just set your console to bring up the game in the disc drive and this will never affect you.

People upset about entertainment focus are weird... games ARE entertainment, just one of many. "No, I want my console to do less things, I want a dozen devices hooked up to my tv." It doesn't stop playing games because it can do more things. If you think MS isn't making enough exclusive new games, that's a separate problem. There is literally no downside to more features.

Windows 8 seems great, but please, don't release it unfinished just to update and patch it later :( I want to play some Assassin's Creed, not update all the time :(

If I can play it in the background, then bring it on! Otherwise, pass.

I'll stick to just transferring music from PC. Not paying more to NOT get ads when already paying for gold. Nice try moneygrubbers.

What happens to Zune and those who have a Zune pass such as myself? I also have a WP7 loaded with songs from Zune and I have the Zune software on my PC loaded with Music, videos and pictures. Is this meant to be a replacement to Zune?

An ipod is good enough. I've been using that since day one. I didnt' see any use in using zune or lastfm when I can just go to youtube for free.
