Resident Evil 6
Resident Evil 6 Smashes Capcom Records With 4.5 Million Copies Shipped
Written Friday, October 05, 2012 By Richard Walker

Despite receiving mixed reviews, including our own slightly scathing assessment, Resident Evil 6 has managed to shatter Capcom's records for the initial shipment of a game. To date, Capcom has shipped more than 4.5 million copies of Resident Evil 6 to retailers.

Thanks to "a strong worldwide response" from fans, Resident Evil 6 has achieved the "highest ever" initial shipment for Capcom, indicating that the series' modern action-oriented focus is clearly pushing some of the right buttons for gamers.

As a franchise, Resident Evil has accumulated sales of over 50 million units since the first game launched back in 1996, according to Capcom's launch day press release for Resident Evil 6.

Resident Evil 6 is out now. You can read our review here.

I don't get Capcom, they say there isn't enough demand for it. Even if this game isn't as good as RE4, look how many people bought it due to the "Resident Evil" title..

This proves that even a shitty game can sell good as long as the name of the title sounds somewhat familiar.

Resident Evil 4 is one of the best in the series...but that isn't survival horror. There's a giant robot thing! Even 3 wasn't really survival horror as you had a massive Nemesis fight every other minute.

I am personally enjoying this alot more than if there were slow zombies shambling around. It has some cool ideas. Chasing an invisible snake around small corridors, stopping a massive rampaging monster etc.

I, for one, am glad it's selling well. If i feel i want some "survival horror", i'll just dig out RE1 and 2.

Uh... 4.5 million shipped?

Note that's SHIPPED, not sold. Capcom think they're gonna sell 4 and a half million copies of a game that's being universally panned?

This is not news, this is just a capcom-biased stat.

When 4.5 million are SOLD, that is when it becomes news.

Like #10 said, that's shipped copies - in the INITIAL shipment. Wait until the holidays are done, you'll see it for under $20 everywhere. Steaming drek like this belongs in the bargan bin; otherwise Capcom has no lesson to learn.

Why don't they just do a HD remake of Resident evil 1,2,3 and put it on one disk? They could even add Zero on their and I'd pay full retail price.

So glad I cancelled my pre order, that demo was horrific. Hope this game crashes and burns spectacularly, then maybe the series will return to its roots. I would love a tomb raider anniversary style remake of the early games, but also think the series needs to get a comprehensive reboot, with ZOMBIES, scarce ammo, genuine scares and a need to use your brain from time to time.

Seen a mate playing it on my friends list and asked him if it was any good. He replied its a bargain bin game an wished he'd waited. Dead Space proves that survival horror is still in demand and can be done well. I loved the resi series, even Resi 5 although it wasn't very atmospheric I enjoyed it. Resident Evil 6 is the final nail in the coffin, RIP Resident Evil it's been a blast.

I don't see why all the mixed reviews. I've played my way through Chris' and Jake's campaigns so far, and I would give it 7/10 based on those, and that's NOT a bad score (and I hear Leon's and Ada's campaigns are the best of the 4, meaning my score will probably increase a bit once I play those). I found Jake's campaign to be a bit....lacking. Mainly because the pacing never quite hit any strides and at the end of the campaign, I still felt like I had no context. But Chris' campaign was pretty damn good - I remember one part aboard a certain seafaring vessel that legitimately made me jump. The atmosphere and production is top notch. The game has some annoyances, and to be honest, I would rather have one long campaign that plays like Resident Evils 4 and 5, rather than 4 short ones that *feel* like DLC for Resident Evil 6, but that doesn't detract too heavily for me. At points, the game still feels 100% Resident Evil, just a bit more stripped down and a lot less deep. Worse than its predecessors, to be sure, but not necessarily bad.

It'd be getting even shittier reviews of it hadn't been so hyped up. The demo was just awful, enjoyable with a friend, when high as hell, but as a game it's terrible.

Hur durr derr is no hurur.

Look. Resident Evil has ALWAYS been about Bio-terrorism first and foremost. It has kept this ideal strong through out, yes RE5 was more action and yes RE6 is even more action. But it still expands on the story. The only way to make the game bigger and better is to up the ante. If it went back to slow paced horror it would be like Capcom just giving up on their idea how to enhance the game. They want to bring in new fans and having stop and shoot, locked cameras and slow pacing won't attract all the hyped up Gamers who have been fucked into thinking CoD is the pinnacle of gaming with nothing but action.

At the end of the Day, RE6 has 4 campaigns, each different in their own right, so take your pick. Or just chill the fuck out, buy a Gamecube and get the original, or whatever. I've been a Resident Evil fan since I was young. I mean like 3 when I first saw my uncle on RE1. I too miss the style of the originals. But you know what? I OWN THE FUCKING ORIGINALS! We can't all like what developers do to our favourite series. But it's THEIR game. If they want to do it, THEY BLOODY WELL CAN! Look at Fallout. Originally, it resembled an RTS such as Age of Empires in appearance, and required a lot of menu work etc. Interplay kept that as the base of the series. Then Bethesda made it an FPS/TPS action shooter RPG. People loved that, so how is this such a far turn?

Hey Capcom, i am 13 years old in RE games (may be more) and i havent yet played RE6, but, shit, i want RE 7 quickly.
P.S.1 give games more romantics scenes, such as Leon and Ada, or Chris and Jill.
P.S.2. if you dont agree with P.S.1., it means Leon, Chris, Ada, Jill, Claire are homosexual or unnormal ))))

I'm tired of hearing about the Inventory system, because it's NOT THAT FUCKING BAD. Up and down on the d-pad cycles through grenades, remote bombs, and First Aid Sprays. Left and right cycles the weapons. And since the game is generous enough to automatically place the cursor on your Herbs when you press Y to open the inventory, simply press X for combine, select the other Herb, and press X again.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but anyone with a functioning brain will understand that it takes approximately one-half of a second to mix a Green and Red herb with this new system. Before you would have to highlight the herb in the top left corner, drag it to the bottom right, then equip. I almost always got killed on Professional on RE5 doing that.

I shouldn't have to explain how easy it is to use the d-pad. I mean, for fucks sake, how did it NEVER occur to ANYONE to use it? "I wonder what this cross on my controller is for? I better not touch it because I don't know what it does."

Use your fucking d-pad, and the correct button combination for herb combining is Y, X, X.

Awesome game so far. Not RE5 awesome, but pretty close. We just beat Leon's campaign with a friend last night and save for shohorned final mission it was a blast! Can't wait to play the other 2.

Speaking of which I know these have some specific order, it would be nice if they offered to walk us through the game from beginnig to end without us having to wonder which mission of which character to play next...

First off, thats pretty impressive stats. While it does say "shipped", they don't ship unless there is a demand, and there is no demand if people are not buying it, keep that in mind.

Second, to the folks who are posting here about the game sucking, yet never played it...seriously? I'm a huge RE fan since the beginning, I even played the gawd horrible shooter titles. I do agree that the RE after Code Veronica was not the traditional survival horror, it was still a great franchise. Games evolve, sometimes they work and sometimes they don't, but if you don't evolve the game, then it will become stagnant.

Third, I just started playing it and I thought the first 15 minutes prequel was pretty awesome. I find the story to be interesting, and I'm only on Leon/Helena's story. We all are entitled to our opinion (even staff reviewers), but don't knock a title without giving it a decent chance.

And remember kiddies, the game could've been worse. It could've ended up like Never Dead!

What could remake resi 2,3..revive the survival horror genre with a next-gen resi title and have some the greatest graphics ever seen on a console (which they already have) and ppl would still find something to bitch about. I think it's a, pretty solid game. I do not like some thins in the game but isn't that the case with all games? And to bitch about the modern day price tag? Your only about what? 7 years off?

What i'm starting to see here is fan rage if you ask me. So survival horror is dead we get it. Capcom killed the series by making it action packed..FINE we get it. Now would you please kindly STFU? The games looks great. It plays much better than re5's clunkiness. The campaign is even longer this ti

Seeing people rip into this game for not being something that they full well knew it wasn't going to be does not constitute a legitimate reason for giving it a low score. Resident Evil has NOT been a Survival Horror Franchise longer than it has been so. I could double check but the last 2 true Survival Horror Resident Evil titles were Zero and CV(X) both released in the early 2000s. Resident Evil started in 1996/7 and switched to a more Action-orientated approach in 2004 with Resident Evil 4 (preceded by The Mercenaries mode in Resident Evil 3 : Nemesis and Leech Hunter mode in Resident Evil Zero). You see, the Action flipside to Resident Evil was present all those years ago as well, so to call it "out of place" just goes to show who was REALLY around back then (selective ignorance not included). The Action element got ramped up repeatedly and people still loved it, but when Resi 5 comes out (note : NOT Resi 4 which was almost universally lauded and praised), people start hating (rightly so in some cases, I was one of them).

Now it's just popular to hate on the series and make unfair commentaries on it and 95% of these haters were probably 5 or less years old back in '96 and think they can make baseless criticisms because it wasn't how they "envisioned the franchise". This year (2012) marks the year Resident Evil has been an Action game for longer than it has been Survival Horror (I know I'm repeating myself), so why on Earth is the game receiving poor reviews for not being a genre that they shouldn't have expected it to be? Also, it's Apples and Oranges. I was there playing the originals and I loved them, fixed camera angles and all, but I'm not one to criticise Capcom for making an equally excellent iteration, and sequel, of the Resident Evil franchise into an Action game. They both play brilliantly, it's not a competition. They may very well still make a Survival Horror Resident Evil game (most likely on XBLA as it's quite niche nowadays), but needlessly ragging on Resi 6 because you're too jaded and embittered to appreciate a great game as it's "the wrong genre", is pretentious, ego-centric and narrow-minded garbage.

As for the Demo, I never played it, but it wouldn't be the first time there was a terrible Demo for an outstanding game. Brutal Legend comes to mind, as does Red Faction : Armageddon and Rage. It works the other way round too. Great Demo, good previews, shit games (Dragon Age 2 anyone?). My point is this, if a Demo is crap, you're only other resource to turn to is reviewers, but if they're all biased from the outset, and most of the "fan reviews" are just trending off the backs of that (for "credibility"), then people will assume the worst and think the game is awful.

I'm not asking people to take the risk and buy the game for £40/$60 (though they should), just to not be so narrow-minded and derogatory about this fantastic game. You may be unsure about buying it, but that's no reason to bandwagon against a game with a site admin or reviewer.

Give it a fair chance and you might like it, and in the meantime, quit the needless shit-talking.

Oh, and whilst you're at it, go and get Syndicate. It my personal GOTY and a really underrated game.

I love how when 4 and 5 came out people were complaining about not being able to move and shoot. Now it's about how it's not like the originals. STOP BITCHING BECAUSE IT'S NOT LIKE THE ORIGINALS! This deserves a lot more credit than it's receiving. Every complaint I have seen is about it not being as survival horror as the originals. Ammo may be abundant in this game, but I'm having a hard time finding herbs, so health is a huge challenge. Capcom modernized this franchise with 4, and kept it up with 5 and now 6. I guarantee that if 6 was exactly like the original 3, people would be bitching about it having stupid controls or being just stupid copies of the originals. No matter how this game came out, people were going to bitch about it. THIS IS A 40 HOUR GAME WITH 4 CAMPAIGNS AND TONS OF EXTRAS. This is an amazing deal since most games are only 5 or 6 hours long with no extra content. Enjoy this game as it was meant to be enjoyed and stop bitching. Seriously, this is getting out of hand.

@#70 no it isn't.
It's a decent third person shooter that relies on quick times a little too much but overall it's worth your time. The content in the game is fair enough for $60 and the gameplay and plot will keep you interested through the four campaigns. Sadly it doesn't feel like a horror game but if that doesn't bother you then I would recommend picking it up, hell just rent it if you aren't sure. Decide what you think based on your own experience, it's not like renting a game for $3 is going to break the bank (my apologies to anyone who can't afford three dollars right now).

lol really guys you say it's such a terrible game yet everything I have played indicates the contrary. Its a great 3rd person action game with enjoyable coop and enough differences between characters and achievements to warent multiple playthrews, all I have to say is reviews were wrong.

i wonder what the 2nd-hand copy uptake is?
Capcom seem to have completly lost the plot when it comes to gaming in the 21st century and are struggling to put out a proper must own title.Too many major name games feel like poor imitations and the new IPs feel like unfinised fan projects.Hopefully this is just a blip or its a case of me expecting too much and Capcom will continue to release gamnes

The problem with an HD update of the original 3 games is that the backgrounds are pre-rendered.
Not only that, they were pre-rendered to the staggeringly high resolution of 320x240
Unlike real-time 3D graphics, they can't just upscale these to a higher resolution.
You might remember how the ports of these games to the Dreamcast and later Gamecube already suffered from the backgrounds being stretched to 640x480.
The result was the backgrounds appeared blurry and indistinct.

While it's easy to update textures and parts of the on-screen display, there is no simple solution to the pre-rendered backgrounds.

Even the REmake and RE0 on the Gamecube have the same problem. Their CGI backgrounds were rendered to 640x480 and won't look too great stretched to 720p.

This is why RE4 and Code Veronica have received an HD remastering. They were completely rendered in real-time.

I think that Akuza guy has been going round giving a thumbs down to every single pro-Resi 6 comment. Even if you hate the game, you've got to admit, whoever is doing the thumbing down is an arse and pretty pathetic. Kinda why most people want that "feature" removing.

Just an observation, he seems like the type, so he's probably pre-pubescent.

I personally don't understand all the hate behind RE6. Yeah, sure, it's not really survival horror anymore, but Resident Evil kicked the idea of suvival horror in the face back in RE4. Hasn't been a horror series since. Honestly, I find it quite amusing when people say RE4 was a horror I game. I think I had one jump scare when I played it, from the dude bursting out of the oven towards the end. That's not very impressive.

Honestly, I think it's a good game. I like that they're embracing the action more instead of pretending to be horror like Dead Space insists on doing. I don't play the recent RE games for horror, I play them for enjoyable action, often with friends. If I want horror, I'll go play Amnesia again.

Oh, and this game isn't being "universally panned" as some would have you believe. It's got mixed reception, about 50/50, actually. Half the reviews praise it, the other half bash it.

LoL @ Comment #61.

On topic: Yeah I'll pick this game up once it reduces to about $20 or $30 this holiday. I made a mistake purchasing FFXIII-2 on release day for $60 and I won't fall for the trap again.

I will most likely get a lot of thumbs down for what Im about to say but looking through the comments is making me laugh.A lot of people are hating on this game saying that it sucks (which i bet they didn't even play the game outside of the demo and if they did they didn't play the whole thing) and going on saying that all they want is a RE2 remake. I would really like a RE2 remake my self but there will be someone that will have nothing but bad things to say about what they didn't do but should have done.

Also i would like to add in my own opinion that if they do decide to to do remakes that the should remake Resident Evil 0-3 and release it on disk instead of download.

@78 you don't need to be jump-scared to be called a horror game. Use early RE games as proof. The fear was from the mood, the claustrophobia, and the gore. If nothing in RE4 made you jump, then even less than that made you jump in the earlier RE games. And if you think otherwise, your nostalgia is lying to you.

RE6 is a horror game. Look at Chris' section in the submarine. It's built to be tense and atmospheric. It does that in spades. Look at Leon's campaign. I don't know about the rest of it, but the first 2 chapters have a lot of tense atmosphere, gore, etc. Horror elements.

Horror and action do not conflict. Survival and action conflict. Resident Evil 6 is an action horror game, not a survival horror game anymore. It still has its horror 100% intact - it's just the survival that has died.

@70 Yeah, its pretty bad... Like gears of war with crappy camera and bad controls. So bad in fact I beat all but Adas campaign (leon's being the most tolerable) and ran to Bestbuy today before their 100% trade in credit sale expired today to get $42 for it, rather than 20 ath the cost of the final campaign. I'd rather borrow or rent it to beat the last chapter. The reason 4 and 5 sold despite not really being survival horror was because the were legitamately fun to play, with a good control scheme that created tension and a non horrible wobbly jerky camera and aiming system that would sway like a sailboat in the wind and jack the cam away from every few minutes for small cutscenes, while you got the shit beat out of you by zombies or w/e. That and enemies didnt have guns, there wasnt a horrible half responsive cover system and Michael bay churning out constant explosions and people dying left and right like B movie extras every five minutes, and bosses that overstayed their welcome after awhile (Seriously, how many times must I kill you before it sticks?!) It felt like they were trying really hard to be like something they're not and like Call of duty. Not being survival horror is the least harsh thing one can say about the game design, when the core values of the game are taken into account.

I'm absolutely loving this game. I'd go with GI's rating at 8.75. Fantastic game IMO, they could have improved things or brought back some things (i.e. the gun system from RE 4 or 5), but all in all a solid game. Not the best of course. To me the best is a tie between RE 2 and Code Veronica.

Yeah I am just going to go on record and say didn't most of us see this coming? I am personally not a survival horror fan I do enjoy Doom 3, Dead Space, and Resident Evil, but personally I like the new action orientated style mostly because I am an action fan. Besides 1 through 4 where some pretty good survival horror games I mean only the last two games have had an action shifted focus besides the action style now doesn't mean its gonna be forever its just because action games are the most popular genre right now. RE might yet return to its horror roots it just probably won't be anytime soon.

The "Biohazard" creator isn't with Capcom anymore. I'm also sorry I don't like COD:RE. Nor does the older fans. Also Fallout 1 and 2 were made by Interplay. The third was not. Plus 3 sucked, NV which was made back by some of the Interplay team made it amazing. So we need Shinji back. Also by what my friends told me nothing much happened other then Leon meets Chris and new characters are put into the series, just to suffer the same fate Berry Burton.

For my last words I say; "Hey, it's up to us to take out Umbrella."

Resident evil 6 is a great game I don't know where all the hate is coming from (judging by all the comments I have read and comments on other sites) I would say a rough estimate of 70% of people giving it bad feedback haven't even played the full game a lot of them going off the demo and videos.

PLAY THE GAME jeez Chris' campaign got a LOT of flak before the game even came out but in my opinion it was the best campaign had a meaningful ending and the action didn't overshadow horror to much and I even found Ammo more scarce then Leons campaign.

I Love this game its a great mix for everybody if I had one complaint it would be "Barry ,Where's Barry!"

Would love to see Barry and Carlos as mercenaries characters DLC
