Blogger Reveals Gameplay Details for Destiny, Bungie's First Post-Halo Title

A blog entry by a senior Demonware employee has been unearthed, revealing hands-on impressions of Bungie’s upcoming project, Destiny.

The first game from the creators of Halo since walking away from Microsoft, Destiny is said to be a co-operative game with a sense of freedom. Indeed, the Demonware employee described the game as being “quite like Halo.”

Demonware specialises in online support and services for videogames, taking care of the “matchmaking, game lobbies, leaderboards, social media, gameplay stats, and Big Data warehousing/analytics services.” Hence the company’s involvement with the project.

Published back in August, the employee blog post details a trip to a local movie theatre, the venue for a "few hours of presentations covering everything from game story, factions, art, engineering, tool chain, graphics, audio, player investment mechanisms, player progression, UI, and web and mobile apps.”

Initially, attendees were presented with a mix of video footage and a live gameplay walkthrough, "demonstrating lots of atmospherics, huge amounts of trees and foliage (SpeedTree), particle effects, dynamic lighting and dynamic time of day ending in a sun set.”

"This is not a dedicated server game,” says the entry, “but there is some simulation and coordination running in their server infrastructure. The game was up and down a lot, playing in a team of 3 we did manage to experience entering a zone to find other players already taking on the bad guys, it's cooperative so we helped out (mostly [name removed], I just died) before both groups went their separate ways. Which is a pretty cool experience, making you feel you are part of a much larger populated world."

"At the end of the day I was excited about the game, I like the feel of being in a large world with different destinations and the interactions along the way. It actually brought back a sense of exploration I recall from playing [Elite] many years ago, although there was no opportunity to shoot aliens in the face in Elite. I'm not fully sold on the appeal of being able to change the colour of a weapon, but I guess it works in China, and customization and individual identity is a big theme for the game."

Interesting huh? You can find out more about Destiny here.

And this will be Activision's new yearly 'blockbuster', as i have a feeling Cod is finally going the way of old yellow.

Sounds like it will be an open world coop game. Easily one of my favorite types of games. I just wish there were more of them.

@2 That would seem unlikely, as Activision don't actually own Bungie and, more importantly, they don't own the IP for Destiny either.

That makes it a rather different scenario than that of CoD, the IP of which is owned by Activision, as well as Infinity Ward and Treyarch, which are both subsidaries of Activision.

Bungie is still an independent studio.
It's already been 2 years since their last game and over 2 years since the Activision publishing deal was announced.
Destiny has also been in the works for a lot, lot longer than that.

It doesn't exactly seem like a formula for annual releases.

This is the one that's due for a split release on the 360 and 720 next year yes? Looking forward to seeing it in action, sounds very Bungie (which is a good thing)!

@2 and @5 - That being said, from the leaked design docs in the west/zampella case it does say that there will be a new entry in the Destiny series every 2 years with an expansion in every off year. Sounds CoD cycle'ish to a degree.

@5, really? I honestly thought Acti bought Bungie from M$, looks like I've half followed a story and read between lines that don't exist... again.

@2 I don't think so, CoD is like herpes, it never goes away and everyone who comes in contact with it is unhappy.

i must be the only gamer who does not give a shit what my "Characters outfit" or Armour or whatever it may be i don't care what it looks like and i just really don't understand why/how people are so obsessive over stupid/meaingless shit like that. like really?

its like the comment above their should be a barbie princess game, but in reality thats pretty much what people are doing as of now in Multiple games which has "DLC" for different costumes or armour for a certaint character/game. you have to be a complete fool to waste money on that and actually think you are getting a "good deal" or that it makes you look "cooler" to other people because it does not.

its just a REALLY EASY way to milk money from all you sheep. if it works in china, then why wouldnt it work here? which is has.
