Microsoft has teased the second episode of Halo 4‘s Spartan Ops with a new trailer. It's called Artifact.

“The mysterious artifact recovered from Requiem takes control of vital systems on board the UNSC Infinity,” says the blurb, “forcing the Spartans of Crimson and Majestic back down to the planet to look for a way to free the ship.

“Commander Lasky and the UNSC need you, Spartan...get back in the game!”

Spartan Ops Episode 2 is out on Monday. It's free, with 343 Industries promising weekly updates for the next 10 weeks.

Not bought Halo 4? You probably should! Review here.

Smashed this game in a quick Redbox rental (Im broke wanted to buy it) and got 840/1000. Spartan Ops was fun, but I hate that it isn't all unlocked from the start especially having achievements tied to it. Only Microsoft would pull this crap. Anyone else try it and they get in trouble.

Fun game though. Hope to get it on Black Friday!

Don't know why they would make achievements unobtainable until all the episodes came out.

Agree with #3. I wish it was all unlocked from the start.
I really don't care for the multiplayer, I want to play all the story/coop missions.
Well, at least they're not like Capcom or EA and actually charging us to unlock it...

I don't understand why everyone is making a huge deal about the achievements being unobtainable from the get-go. It only gives you an excuse to come back and play this game some more, I mean, why would you want to just max it out for achievements and leave it? It's a great game.

The Halo franchise is one of the few that I still play purely for enjoyment rather than hogging up all of the achievements on them. It's actually sort of refreshing to be able to just play a game and not have a plan going in on how to unlock all the achievements in the quickest way possible, as that's what I tend to do sadly. Spartan Ops was okay, nothing really more than a pleasant distraction in my opinion, but I still look forward to all of the new episodes.

What is funny is that while I was playing Spartan Ops, I felt like I was playing Resistance 2' s co-op campaign. They have plenty of similarities, but Halo does it a little better, although they are shorter than the Resistance ones. It feels like this is what Insomniac should of done with the co-op campaign in Resistance 3 as a follow-up.

@#7 You must be new here, so le tme enlighten you. most ppl that come here don't play the game for it's qualities, but for achievement. When there is nothing left to unlock, it's next one please...

@#10 GTFO, Resistance 3 co op campaign was stellar=P one of the most memorable campaigns IMO, thanks to all the varied locations/set pieces. Who cares story was shit, it was good enough as an excuse to travel through all those locations=)

Would love to play Spartan ops but having to be online AND a gold member is a bit of a piss take. Personally I kinda feel cheated. Campaign was a tad short and nearly everything seems to be locked out for us offline players. C'mon M$ and 343, quit the money grabbing and give us offliners Spartan Ops :D

@7 Because ppl think a big gamerscore actually means something and are actually proud of it, LOL!!! I come here because its a great place for news. I love getting achievements too, but don't base my game playing on them. It makes for a BIG waste of money and time. To each his own tho!

@ 7 & 13

I never said I wanted to get the achievements and then stop playing it. If you read what I said you would see that I was not happy with the fact that the game isn't complete yet. If you read the article you'll see its spread out over 10 weeks. I thought the campaign was too short, beat it twice already and wanted some more co op stuff to do. I didn't get that in my rental as it was all locked out.

I also said that I plan to buy the game. Why would I buy the game if I didn't like it or plan to continue playing it after I get the achievements.

I'm annoyed at the weekly release thing. Could it not simply be a part of the massive disc 2 install and playable from day one?

@3 That's because it's Microsoft and it's their service, they can do that.

@11 You've just described what's wrong with this community. You have people like you who seem to think that they have a some imaginary right to easy and non-time consuming achievements, They then try telling other people to just deal with it because this is an achievement site and that somehow makes it ok that we've twisted the achievement system into something it's not supposed to be.

@26 Yes, you can still play episode 1.

@3 No, any other developer/publisher would be appreciated by their respected fans. Only hardcore achievement hunters with, what appears to be, little actual appreciation of a game's longevity cycle in terms of free content would have issue with this. I genuinely don't understand people complaining about free extra content just because it has been included in the original 1000g. Play the game for the game.

And @26, yeah all prior episodes are still playable :)

... Why are some people really complaining about this... How childish can you get? You're getting episodic content for free over time... please tell me how that's a bad thing, if you can find any possible way.
I've yet to play spartan ops, only just got hold of my copy, going through the campaign atm, and loving it. :D
Feels like a nice blend of ce and 2. Will be trying to multiplayer in a little bit :3

@34 Well, you know, it's not like they're giving us free DLC. They're unlocking content that is on the disc. Things that we already bought, but just cannot access yet. That's why it's a bad thing. How would you feel if you purchased a car at FULL price, but they said you have to wait 3 months to use the radio?

I gotta say, I'm definitely happy they're not making us pay for it. But we should've been able to play them from the start anyways.

Spartan Ops is all well and good in theory, but the problem is can you really sit down for a marathan gaming session and play 4 or 5 hours of it and then do it again the very next day? The answer is quite simply no. Once you know that mission, you might choose to play it two or even three times, but then what? You're not going to keep going back to it as you did Firefight. For those of us who would rather avoid competitive play, this means that their is little replayability in the game and that we'll be left languishing in the lower ranks with little desire to pick the game up again. This could well turn into what happened with Mass Effect 3 multiplayer, where after the intial surge, you simply slipped the disc into the console every other weekend to complete the weekend challenge before then going on to play something else. Hopefully, when they look at the numbers that are playing the multiplayer in Halo 4, as compared with Reach, they will decide to bring Firefight back as DLC as there is no way that people will continue to play Spartan Ops years down the line as they did Firefight.

You knew what you were getting on the disk before you bought it. Also so what if it takes 10 weeks? We waited years for a sequal to halo 3 and it served as a good thing, its anticipation. You wouldnt mind if you saw a film and knew the next one wasnt out for at least a year or two but you complain at a week for a game. Double standards much?

I agree that infinite respawns make Spec Ops pointless except for the achievements and the challenges to earn extra XP. Not sure what they were thinking when they axed Firefight.

@35 Excellent analogy! I agree from a consumer's perspective. Just like how many games have release day dlc that is sold separately yet already on the disc.

However, from a programming perspective, this episodic approach allows them to continue to tweak and perfect the Spartan Ops experience long after the game has been sent off to the manufacturers. That allows them to spend more time on the campaign and multiplayer before the release, then focus on glitch fixes, multiplayer and Spartan Ops content after the release.

@35, a fair point, but it's still something we're getting for free here, and we where told that we would be getting this over time, it's not like this is new news, or after you've signed the contract fine print reading.
I like the idea of content like this, which is bonus content, being released over time when we pay no extra for it. Those complaining knew what they where getting involved in from the start, and have no honest reason to be pissed ect.
