Assassin's Creed III Hidden Secrets Add-On Resets Progress for Some Players
Written By
View author's profile

A host of enormously disgruntled users have been reporting a major issue with Assassin's Creed III's first proper DLC, The Hidden Secrets pack, which was made available to Season Pass owners yesterday. Apparently playing the content is causing players' progress through the main story to be reset, while preserving progress on certain side missions and activities.

A 100% completion statistic is therefore being rolled back to 45%, placing players at the game's opening chapters, meaning essentially having to begin the story again from scratch. In some cases, completed Naval and Privateer missions have also been reset too.

As Assassin's Creed III autosaves, it seems that completed saved games might be unobtainable. It would be advisable therefore to avoid playing The Hidden Secrets DLC to prevent your main mission progress from being erased. We'll update this post as we hear more about it.

You can find out more in Ubisoft's official thread here or in our own Assassin's Creed III forum thread on the subject here.

[Thanks, Marty McFal]

SOOO glad I haven't started this game up yet. Dabbled a little bit on the MP just to see if anything was different and then went on to other games I've been wrapping up. Please fix all of these problems, Ubi. We don't need another Borderlands 2 on our hands.

... and that is why I don't mind to wait until they release a complete edition of this game, too. Half the price and no bugs like this.

If only developers focused on polishing their games close to release and getting bugs worked out instead of feeling pressured to meet the deadline for release. I wouldn't care if a game gets delayed a couple of weeks so it can get polished out.

What a joke. Don't even download this POS DLC, not worth risking your progress for a bunch of useless pre-order junk. This series is going downhill quick.

Same as skyrim, how do these big huge games get loaded full of bugs and glitches and then get nominated for a game of the year award??!! I'm sorry but that's crap, sloppy dev cycles and pushing it out for holiday sales, the bad press from stories like this is 10x worse than the press saying "dlc pushed back to work out bugs" Walking Dead GOTY!!

Thought i'd get this instead of borderlands 2 (cuz b2 is fucked up with gamebreaking glitches atm.) Now this happens. Good thing i dont have a season pass. Risk my save game for some pre-order dlc? No thanks. Get it fixed ubisoft.

@18 you didn't get any of the glitches in TWD then? No falling thru the map? No slowdown? No voice sync issues? Progress not carrying forward into the next episode? Don't get me wrong, I loved TWD game, but it had its fair share of glitches too

But didn't everyone say they won't even waste their time with this excuse of DLC? Gotta love hypocrits. Hopefully it will be resolved by the time proper DLC comes out, so I can enjoy it all together=)

Wow, just wow. I'd already stopped playing because of the Encyclopedia glitch (having scanned all farmer activities and refusing to play through again), but now I'm seriously glad. Not that I would have got this DLC anyway, but they seriously need to get things sorted.

This is why I don't bother buying games or dlc the day it's released. I have gotten burned far too many times to keep giving my money to developers who refuse to have their games properly tested.

this kind of thing is why game developers NEED both auto save and manual save options. a manual backup is always a good idea...

I personally don't have many problems with Ubisoft, so I won't be too hateful but this game with all its bugs and even buggier DLC has just been a nightmare to watch, witness, and experience. Thanks for buying the Season Pass, now we're gonna screw you and take all your game progress away... unbelievable.

I'm only getting the Season Pass on Boxing Day as I can't afford it yet, but from hearing this, it sounds like a relief I held out. I feel for those who have been affected though. I'm with #36 in not hating Ubisoft, and I have only experienced two glitches so far, but not enough to ruin my experience. They really should have tested this DLC before releasing it though.

How could a few short side missions possibly do something like reset your story progress? Just... how? How did Ubisoft make this a possibility? >_<

I can say from my own playthrough that I had no issues with this DLC, and my save file is still fine as of, well, right now. Considering I continue to see issues with these updates, as well as on Borderlands 2, I'm thinking I'm just gonna wait a while for the next updates for all these newer games.

I think it's the chapter markers attached to some items that is breaking the progress for some people. A few of the singleplayer items can only be unlocked after completing Sequence 6, and perhaps the game thinks you're only that far along because they were just unlcked, therefore rolling you back and making you re-do half the game.

Despite this, I haven't experienced any problems with the DLC. It took a day longer than it should have to appear as available or even existent on my console, but nothing broke and everything worked like it should. A nice bunch of goodies to tide us over until the first real DLC.
