Rumour: Xbox 720 Codename is 'Kryptos', 'Oban' Chip Production Delayed
Written By
View author's profile

That unstoppable rumour mill has started grinding back into life again today, with reports emerging concerning the next-generation Xbox. Xbox 720, Durango, Orangutan, whatever you want to call it, is apparently referred to internally at Microsoft as 'Kryptos' according to inside sources reporting to a site oddly called SemiAccurate. Hmm...

The site also reports that Microsoft’s next console will run on an AMD chip codenamed ‘Oban’, which was supposedly scheduled to go into mass production at the end of 2012. Or now-ish. Apparently, problems with the chip’s manufacturing have delayed production, with a source describing the quality of the component as ‘painfully low’.

Consider that your next-gen update then. To recap: Xbox 720 codename is rumoured to be Kryptos, Oban chip is a bit rubbish so it's delayed mass production according to reports. But as long as a box-shaped thing that plays games comes out for the next generation, we'll be happy. Rumours persist that next-gen consoles will arrive in 2013.

I'll be first in line to buy one at Christmas... 2014. Gotta have a year to work out the bugs, and we ALL know it'll be buggy as hell.

even though year to year the gaming industry seems to be slowing, this generation of consoles are still selling at premium prices($199/$299) with expensive accesories aswell. and i dont think sony or ms are worried about the wii-u. we most likley get a new console untill 2014.

Next Gen RRoD is inevitable. Gigglesnort..
Just like the 360 they will stuff this console with outdated budget technology, by the time it comes out, it'll be a 3 year old PC but HEY those 500 million dollars were well spent on that Kinect Launch Party!!!

depends on the price....$300+ and I'll wait for a price drop. Who knows....maybe if all the 12 year olds who ruin MP games get their parents to buy them the new console at release then games like COD and Halo might be playable again.

I'll probably cave and pick this up when it releases, if it has a nice lineup of games. If not, I'm not switching to a console that I have to wait half a year for for some entertaining stuff to play.

Overall, I'm hoping for delays. The 360 still has so much to it that I don't feel like I need a new console in one year's time.

I hope they don't have their awesome first generation of Xbox 360 red ring of death/hardware failure adventure. I've gone through 7 systems. Although I'd like to see some customization options. Something like memory slots for adding more ram like a PC.

We don't need RROD/YLOD or massive removal of features (like BC and OS) again. Take your time MS and Sony, get your hardware sorted out and fully tested.

Current games still look good enough for me anyways. WD, 1313, etc look nice, but graphics have passed the "good enough" threshold this gen. I don't feel that burning need for better graphics when I look at high end PC stuff or AP/Samaritan tech demos, instead I'm like "cool, I guess". Its reached that point IMO.

Well said! Both respective companies need to take their time with this. I doubt well see any big mass malfunction like the RROD/YLOD. Defective units is a given. Still I can't count it out.

No way this is going to release in 2013. They'll hype it up over a 9 month long advertising spree first.
We would of seen something solid by now. Announce it ~June 2013, release Dec 2013 to Q1 2014.

Why oh why go with an AMD chip. They're so many years behind Intel nowadays it's just not even funny.

Buying a cutting edge AMD chip for the system is still going to leave them about 3 years behind cutting edge Intel based systems.

This all but guarantees that the next XBox isn't going to be cutting edge and is going to be something more akin to the WiiU where it's an "okay" HD console, but still shit compared to the hardware available on the market and what could be done instead.

Still got my launnch-date pro with the 20Gb, and it works like a charm, but since getting a new TV I mostly use a Jasper.

Grabbing this whenever it's released, no matter how much it is, gotta have it!

Hopefully I don't have to cut in line as I did when I bought the first one, man people got pissed...
To top it off, the store had waaaaay too few consoles for 100+ people that was standing in line outside the store before opening.
Some guys had been there all night in the freezing cold (way up North in Sweden)

Expect 250, 500 and 1TB storage. BluRay drive. No backwards compatibility. Gamer profile will carry over, but I doubt GS will. Probably a price of $399/499/599, depending on storage. Purely speculation of course. Shit, it could be $99, 4gb, cartridge and only play NeoGeo games for all I know.

I didn't get a system until 5 years go, and waited for a reason. Far too many stories of RRoD. I know one guy who had like 7. Shit, I had one for piss sakes. I know it's hit and miss, but, no chances will be taken.

I really think the next gen needs to have great backwards compatability, xbla, games on demand and all dlc should be playable on the next Xbox... it would put less pressure on a great starting lineup and would make all of us who pay for things feel like we paid for them for a reason

Im sure people will be like oh just move on to the next generation thats why its a generation, but why cant I be able to play halo 3 hell even combat evolved whenever i feel like it? How about minecraft? What happens to people who spent $1000+ on rockband dlc? I feel like it just cant be that hard for these things to work on the next Xbox..

I realize theres never anything that states we have the right to be able to do this, but it just makes sense, people will feel like their digital collection means something, it will make people say wow microsoft cares about me and the money i spend on their products, and really it will take sooo much pressure off the first wave of games, Halo 4 will have a longer life, theres a new gears game, they cant just come out with another gears and another halo by holiday next year, thats way too soon, I think it lets them expiriment with new exclusives while making sure if these new games tank, the console stays on top

I'm not a fan of hopping on stuff at launch, it's expensive and something ultimately better comes along for a lower price later. The people who mosey on along several years later always get the better deals because the company is tossing out promotions all willy nilly to collect new customers. Not to mention, consoles and their games always perform public beta tests on their first string of customers, and I'm entirely not interested in being one of the poor bastards who buys 3 different consoles in the first year, or has to pay to ship it to be fixed umpteen times.

@25 okay, maybe I just don't know as much about computers as I think I do, but AMD makes an 8 core processor. I know thats a bit overkill and most programs probably aren't designed to come close to using all of them, but still how could intels 4 core I7 beat that? cuz as far as I know the I7 is intels top of the line.

@41 I wouldn't call that common sense, it's an educated guess, but it's still a guess. MS and/or Sony could unveil their next console at E3 and have it launch in November in time for Christmas.

@44 There's no way the next console would cost that much, it would cripple sales at launch. It also depends on the features of the console and no one knows anything about the next console, so no one can put a price on it, but economically speaking $1000 is way too much for a launch price.

@46 the price is based off of the patients that ms put in a while back. i agree, the price is steep. as for a release date. i just dont see why a new system should come out yet. it would have to really stand out for me to buy. plus the rod is still an issue. i dont trust ms. when it does come out. i'll wait & see how durable it is. plus its functions, i dont like the apps. also ms is making this a pc instead of a gaming console. i respect your input, thanks :)

@47 That doesn't mean those patents will be used in the next Xbox. Companies patent stuff all the time and a lot of them never see the light of day. It's just not economically feasible for a company to have that high of a price point for a launch console. They need to build up an install base for the console, pricing them out of many peoples price range and that doesn't happen.

I understand you don't trust, MS I don't either but I don't trust any company. I've had 2 Xboxes, my first RRoDed several times before it went out of warranty, I'm on my second 360 and it's lasted 3+ years. I haven't heard of the 360 Slims having that issue either so it's seems like MS has taken care of it, but I'll wait to hear of any issues before I buy as well.

So the source i got the info MS had problems with mass producing the chip was right hmm! I woudn,t be supriced now if Sony uses this as a headstart to bring out their PS4 before MS can? And 48 is right and this isn,t PS3 trolling ;) Whoever has both systems knows as a fact that it seems PS3 has more to offer and actualy rewards players more. And their internet service is still for free. However if the next-gen consoles can clash with a high power PC is a serious no probly. And indeed will prices be high at launch date as usual, there is a pro and contra about that, buy one right away and you probly enjoy xbox live again as it should be and without MP games with trash talking, yelling 12 year olds playing games 16 or 18 years+ basicly like it was when the xbox360 just came out and everybody still chatted with eachother in matches.

One of most things for gamers and I want keep gamertag profile, gamerscores, having Xbox 360 games allow play and carry on onto next Xbox and maybe using HDD save games and put it join in next Xbox so then we not have worry about start new game and begin over again for Xbox 360 game. :)

Yeah I managed 3 years with the 20gb release then got the elite and that RROD'd on me but surprisingly the original didn't. I was talking about the UI more than the hardware, my slim constantly stutters and freezes on me with this new interface.
So yeah yet again this site continues to down vote opinions, had to check for a second if I had come on to the childish troll kingdom known as IGN by mistake but no just x360a community degrading day after day.

I'll prooobably go up to 500 for the next xbox. I'll have a hard time paying that or more but I'll probably wind up doing it. I'll just have to preorder and drop a few bucks on it every so often so I'll have money for games when it comes out.

Don't even care anymore. Valve is coming out with the Steambox. Only console anyone will ever need. Well except I guess for the Halo series but that'll likely become my only exception.

A basic hardware platform with the ability to upgrade? A great starter for getting people into the world of PC gaming where I get all my new game releases for 35% off on a regular basis and where we have bundles and such where you can get 6 games for a penny or whatever you want to pay for it.

Great warning! I bought my xbox a few months after it's release and wound up sending it a few times for repairs.... So I'm going to wait a while, until the failure rate is down and a more dependable chip is introduced. Sorry. My 360 is running great now so I'm going to play that just a little bit longer than my original xbox.

My first 20GB Premium console lasted me 4 years from 2006-10. Not bad considering that I played 5+ hours a day, 7 days a week. Plus, having a tendency of falling asleep and leaving my machine on overnight. Then I bought my 2nd console (first Elite 120GB) a few weeks later and its running smooth to this day. So I don't plan on buying a next-gen til my current console dies on me and I pray it lasts til 2015.

I just hope that when the next-gen Xbox comes out... they don't tell us that the 360 games will only run under some half-assed, backwards-compatibility mode (and only a 3rd of the games, at that)... and then drop all 360 games from being able to play on Xbox LIVE a year or so later!

I can just see ALL those COD, Halo and other map packs being a wasted investment on the 360, like the Halo 2 Map Packs when they killed Xbox LIVE for the original Xbox.

Whatever they produce... it better be RELIABLE... and FULLY backwards compatible with ALL 360 games!!!

@46 ive seen it on a legit website that that's the price range they want. and to be honest ms can get on its knees and suck my dick cause last time i checked im not bill gates, every time i wipe my ass i don't make 2 bill. the country is in a state of economical hell and stupid shyt keeps coming out and fucking retarded prices. like this and a pair of fucking headphone that will break in a few months that are worth 300 dollars. that right there to me is 3 months of my phone bills payed off. no one has the money to be buying crap like this especial at that price. the only way ill get it is if game stop tell me that if i trade my slim and 10 games all ill have to pay is 200, maybe just maybe ill get it but not at some 1000 bucks. and if by some chance it is cheap im gonna wait a few months because already there having a huge problem

@ 40 You can take your PC gaming and shove it straight up your ass. I'm sorry but I'm a console gamer only and I don't need the headaches or bullshit.

I honestly believe atleast Microsoft will release in November of 2013. I don't give a rat's ass what Sony does.. they failed this generation of gamers miserably with their failed software and UI, gimped 3rd party multiplats due to the console being more difficult to develop for, a gimped downloading and update system, and download speeds that are considerably slower than what my 360 provides wirelessly.

They dropped the ball, and failed to give us anything close to the equivilent of XBL meanwhile enticing fans with this PSN+ garbage which is actually nothing more than a rental service just like XBL.

Sony would literally have to suck my cock to restore my faith in them again, and no I'm not kidding...

@66 "I've seen it on a legit website that that's the price range they want".

That doesn't really mean anything other than you're taking a rumor as gospel and do you have a link to said website because I searched for this supposed "price range" rumor and can't find anything on it. Also, how is the website "legit"? Does that mean it's never had information wrong or posted an untrue rumor? And who's "they"? Someone from MS said this is the price range we want and only this only "legit" website caught it? It's simple economics on why the price won't be that high, it will hurt sales too much and kill the console.

Hurry up Microsoft, and take my money! Can't wait for the next-next-gen. And hopefully you listen to your fanbase and include the backwards compatibility with the 360 titles. I have nearly two meters of green boxes here which represents years of great games.

ABOUT THE NAME: Kryptos? Now that's a *cryptic* name and obviously a mere placeholder. It reminds me of "Krypton", the home planet of Superman. You know, Superman's logo is a triangle (of sort) and considering this is the third console in the series of Xboxes; a Superman-ish triangle could work as the third Xbox's logo in the same manner the Spider-Man font was used with the PlayStation 3 with its initial release. Man of Steel (2013) is coming...

"Durango" and "Orangutan" share the letters "ORANGU" leaving the letters "DTAN". Maybe you could conjure up something with the altitudes and latitudes of Durango (Mexico), a location of the orangutans and Kansas (Superman). Just a thought, yet I'm probably looking into things just... the name "Xbox 720" would work all fine in my opinion.
