Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition
Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition Adds Another 1 Million to the Tally. Has Now Shifted 5 Million
Written By
View author's profile

It seems like once every few months, we're posting news about how many copies the phenomenonally successful Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition has shifted. Why, it was only back in October 2012 (remember 2012?) that we reported on Mojang's block building mega hit reaching 4 million units. Now it's reached 5 million. Blimey.

Well deserving of its spot in our 'Top 5 Success Stories of 2012' feature, Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition continues to go from strength to strength on XBLA, managing to shift another 1 million digital copies since the announcement of the October figures, reaching the 5 million milestone on December 31st, as tweeted by Mojang's Daniel Kaplan.

Markus 'Notch' Persson also noted that on Christmas Day alone, the Minecraft series sold 453,000 copies across all platforms, bringing the grand total up to 18 million units sold to date. Looks like Minecraft is one helluva spicy meatball...

You can thumbs down this all you want, but I've never liked Minecraft. However, I can see why it's so successful. Maybe I'm just not creative enough to play it right.

They've been putting out updates pretty quick lately and they are big ones. I can't keep up with all the changes anymore. Still fun though

I'm gonna assume that the 360 version thats pushing these numbers isn't counting the DLC that seems to be slowly trickling in from the PC thats really the only thing stopping me from DL it is all the addons that will probly be in a GoTY/complete collection version.

Happy to say I am not one of those 5 million. What exactly is the appeal with this game? Maybe it's just me getting bored of everything in like an hour. Who knows? :P

@11 it isn't DLC, it is title updates. They are free so unlikely to get a goty edition as it will download all the updates when you buy it and run it for the first time

Dang, 5 million. The PC version hasn't even sold 9 million, so that strikes me as impressive for a version of the game which hasn't even hit what PC is.

I'm wondering if the 360 version is drawing more people to the PC version. It's much nicer here, we have weekly snapshots of future versions of the game, easier updates (Microsoft doesn't ask people to give monies, obviously, but mind you Minecraft has a few free updates.), modding, mapping, and more.

@11 YOu have no clue what you're talking about. The game updates itself when you play it. Why would they have a separate edition?

I'm not surprised. My brother got my a 1600 point card just for this. I wish I had gotten it sooner. Great for the wife too so I can see the sudden burst of people getting their friends to play here.

Maybe they will do a disc release when all the updates have been done for people who don't have online access . But I can't see that happening

In fairness, I've only recently got in to the creative aspect myself. Before I just enjoyed the surviving and dungeon-crawling aspects, now I'm gradually making structures.
Though, I only give a few minutes of creative mode at a time to it; I find I tire of it if I spend too long.

@3/4 - Ha, didn't even look at the screen shot until you said, nice.

Anyway, don't like Minecraft myself but 5 million sales is an amazing accomplishment. That is amazing. Wonder how high it will go?

I'm with #5, I'm afraid.

I love building stuff in games, but Minecraft just hasn't been able to do it for me. It's good that so many people enjoy it, though :].

xx

I had no idea what it was... I knew of it but never actually played or had even seen in played. I got it 'just to see what the fuss was' and I played for 50+ hours! I had fun, and it was worth it for me. I like survival type things, and the creative part was sick. I had an entire castle and multiple outposts with roads BEFORE creative mode.

That's a lot of digging. ;)

It would be great if they could find some way to add more achievements to the game though. I understand there are restrictions on arcade titles, but 400 points just isn't enough for such a huge game!

@10 PC version doesn't have "missions". Have you even played the PC version?

Besides, there's going to be at least a 1 year (possibly longer) delay before the Xbox gets the latest PC update.

I think he's on about adventure maps. At least, I hope so.
It would be nice to have some adventure maps released to be fair, although I'm still waiting for the supposed Texture packs we were going to get.
