XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Free XCOM: Enemy Unknown DLC Out Today

Here’s a nice way to start the day. 2K has announced that free DLC for XCOM: Enemy Unknown will be heading our way later today.

Called Second Wave, the DLC allows access to a bunch of options that previous only unlocked once you had completed the game, plus a few more that were tucked away in the game’s code - abandoned features created during development.

There’s some interesting stuff in there including randomised starting stats for Rookies and random stat increases on level-ups, as well as a range of options that should make the game even tougher. Plenty to get stuck into.

Check out the new options below.

  • Damage Roulette: Weapons have a wider range of damage.*
  • New Economy: Randomized council member funding.*
  • Not Created Equally: Rookies will have random starting stats.*
  • Hidden Potential: As a soldier is promoted, stats increase randomly.*
  • Red Fog: Combat wounds will degrade the soldier's mission stats.
  • Absolutely Critical: A flanking shot guarantees a critical hit.
  • The Greater Good: Psionics can only be learned from interrogating a psionic alien.
  • Marathon: The game takes considerably longer to complete.
  • Results Driven: A country offers less funding as its panic level increases.
  • High Stakes: Random rewards for stopping alien abductions.
  • Diminishing Returns: Increased cost of satellite construction.
  • More Than Human: The psionic gift is extremely rare.
  • War Weariness: Funding goes down over time. **
  • E-115: Elerium degrades over time. **
  • Total Loss: Lose all soldier gear upon death. **
  • Alternate Sources: The power source cost to build facilities increases dramatically. **

*Unlocked prior to completion of campaign.

** Obtainable upon completion of Impossible difficulty

It's nice to see this stuff is free, but some of the stuff make the game harder. I'll pass on it.

Cool. Any info on whether or not changing these modifiers will affect achievements?

@1 Underratedly awesome? This game has received overwhelmingly positive ratings from not only pretty much every media outlet, but also a significant majority of consumer reviews. That's not underrated.

During the course of 2012, I played 64 games (many to completion), included in that number was Xcom EU - and there is no doubt that Xcom is the best of the lot. I got the game for Christmas, and have put in something like 100 hours since then. Great game, which even on the easier settings can be pretty challenging, so the idea of making it harder still is pretty daunting, but support for a great game is always welcome(especially when that support is free!). Here's hoping that we might get to see some more missions, enemies and / or weapons soon though.

11 & 12

That's one way the term underrated is used, to describe a good good that receives high praise but doesn't sell all too wel.

Now this, my friends, is the kind of support the majority of A* titles are missing. Great game btw, one of the best I have played on the 360 imo.

Second Wave was also the name of one of the "War of the Worlds" idie films released in June of 2005. You can thank AVGN for the info.

Before the first DLC came out I read that there are two DLCs planned for this game. Is this one now the "real" second DLC? If so, I was hoping for some new missions or something like this, not new game-modes that make a tough game even tougher, free or not.

I'm trying to rent this from Gamefly after hearing all the good things about the game glad to see that this DLC at least wil be free though most of it looks like things to make the game harder.

Well from the way I read it they are options to turn on or off so no need to worry about them making the game harder, just turn them off. but a lot of them sound like they'd make the game more realistic, which is a winner in my book! I played through on Normal once already and thought it was a littel to easy (considering I was fighting an advanced alien race with superior technology). Can't wait to do my Classic Ironman runthrough!

impossible playthrough seems the hardest for me (in progress of class ironman but is a lot easier) wish I had this when I had done impossible the Absolutely Critical one would have made the game a lot easier.
