Aliens: Colonial Marines Trailer Ventures into the Alien Hive
Written Thursday, January 10, 2013 By Richard Walker

A foreign entity has been detected in the USS Sulaco Engineering Room in this latest 'Concept to Game' trailer, which takes you deep into the alien hive, showing you how a piece of concept art becomes a reality when rendered in-game.

As before - in the Hadley's Hope Concept to Game video - the trailer shows us a bit of concept art, and then shows how it translates in the actual game itself. It all looks impressively atmospheric, and should be even scarier when inhabited by toothy Xenomorphs and facehuggers.

Check out the short Concept to Game trailer below. Aliens: Colonial Marines is out on February 12th, 2013.

How there can be a hive on the Sulaco? The queen was on the dropship on the way up from LV-426 and got off in the hanger, killing Bishop. Then Ripley proceeded to blow it out of the airlock. The queen didn't stroll around on the Sulaco dropping eggs wherever she saw fit; she never left the hanger.

Even if it laid more than one egg on the dropship (there was obviously at least one or Alien3 wouldn't have taken place), who transported them around the Sulaco? There were only two humans and an artificial person, no alien drones.

Gameplay aside, this story is getting more and more bullshit.

@#5 - Exactly.

So now we have the game taking place in a facility that the film explicitly shows turning into an enormous mushroom cloud, some sort of installation built right next to the derelict and a hive on the Sulaco.

I'm beginning to think Gearbox has a wildly different version of Aliens than I've been watching all these years.

Also, we're a month away from this thing, where is footage of actual gameplay ferfucksake?

@5 instead of picking holes in storylines why not just sit back and enjoy what should be a great game with gearbox at the helm. Who cares how and why a hive got there. The developers have decided it's there and it looks pretty good. If it makes for an excellent Alien game after the abysmal Alien v Predator by Rebellion.

@8 exactly. These things are made for entertainment. They're meant to be enjoyed for what they are. Not picked apart because they don't quite fit into whatever perfect little world somebody decides it should be. If it's as solid as borderlands then it should be a little special

@7, 9 & 10 - If that's the case, then Gearbox need to rescind all of the stuff they've said about how much they love the film and how they are dedicated to servicing fans.

Not to mention the claims that this is a 'true sequel to James Cameron's film' (those are Gearbox's words, not mine).

As a fan of the film, they are 'servicing' me in a way I don't particularly care for. I have noticed several glaring inconsistencies that I really don't know how they are going to logically explain away. The fact that Hadley's Hope is not there anymore being the most prominent of them.

If Gearbox were just making an Aliens game and not trying to make it a sequel to the Cameron film, I'd be a lot more forgiving.

But they aren't.

They are trying to co-opt my love of that film (while simultaneously shitting all over it) to get me to buy this game.

@#16 - No they can't.

They are going to have a hell of a time convincing me (or anyone else who really thinks about it) that a "cloud of vapor the size of Nebraska" didn't wipe Hadley's Hope off the map. With the extra added bonus that there seems to be no fallout from said thermonuclear explosion since the marines are not wearing radiation suits.

Unless of course they are trying to suggest that Hadley's Hope was somehow larger than the state of Nebraska, which is just retarded. So I'm calling bullshit on the story already.

If you wanna lower your standards, then fine, you go right ahead. But as long as Gearbox wants to claim that this is a 'true sequel to James Cameron's film' and then continue to do things that are OBVIOUSLY not congruous with the film, they should be chastised.

@#15 - Exactly.

Really hope this turns out to be great instead of being medicore or below then great.

This game kept me lots of hype and look forward so I do hope it not turn me down when reviews up next month around time for game release and telling me that is not good. I hope not.

But we all know Gearbox Software will making sure their game great unlike one game they did in past is not good game called Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway in 2007. :)

I know when I play a game, I don't just play it for gameplay. I play it for story as well. Graphics have no bearing to me. I played Pong for Christ's sake. Story is what keeps me playing a game. Entertainment, yes, but entertainment for me is not just about how the game plays. If the story isn't up to par, then how can I be entertained by it?

As Jack Frost has said, when Gearbox touts that this is the "true" sequel to Aliens and then basically ignores what happens in said film, then I don't put much faith in the game.

This is a video from over a year ago. Electricity, weapons caches (@ 6:45)? I think not for a settlement that was completely destroyed. How come Hudson didn't discover this "weapons cache" when he did his sweep of the facility? And why the hell would colonists need a military-grade weapons cache? Unless the Marines set up shop in this particular building. Yeah, convenient...

http://www.trueachievements.com/n5724/aliens-colonial-marines-gameplay-video.htm

A bull alien? Really? I don't remember seeing anything but humans on LV-426, which would mean that all the aliens would be the same, human-based. C'mon...

And Randy Pitchford said that Duke Nukem Forever was going to be awesome. Hahahaha

I thought Brothers in Arms was a good game. It was different than what CoD and MoH were at the time (if you wanted something more than just running to each checkpoint and shooting enemies). You could utilize squads and move them to different positions (like Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six), had a cover system (unheard of in a FPS) and had a good story (there's that story again!). It actually made me feel for the characters more than when I play CoD or MoH. They had life.

@#20 Actually the bull alien has been around for a while can't remember one in the films, but I do remember having one way back in the day when they made all the toys.

And all there trying to do is bring different enemies to the table, it would get a little boring just killing the same xenomorph over and over again.

"Get away from her you bitch"

Yeah, I know there was a bull alien toy. But the alien has to be hatched from a cow. That's fine for a toy (of course they have to have variations in toys to make playing with them more interesting), but I don't remember ever seeing cows at Hadley's Hope. Only humans.

Theoretically a fusion explosion would leave little to no radioactive fallout, and as far as the actual blast it was explained in an earlier dev documentary that the blast was not focused outward but more upwards towards the sky allowing Hadley's Hope to survive somewhat with catastrophic damage.

@#20
The cache of weapons and ammo in that vid looks like it was all set up by the Marines in that room. Troops and their APCs usually do carry spare supplies with them after all.

"The cache of weapons and ammo in that vid looks like it was all set up by the Marines in that room. Troops and their APCs usually do carry spare supplies with them after all."

I figured as much.

"Theoretically a fusion explosion would leave little to no radioactive fallout, and as far as the actual blast it was explained in an earlier dev documentary that the blast was not focused outward but more upwards towards the sky allowing Hadley's Hope to survive somewhat with catastrophic damage."

Well I guess James Cameron didn't read about fusion explosions, because that explosion from space in Aliens was very "outwards".

And I put little faith in Gearbox's dev documentaries on this game. Sorry. And I guess they didn't research this fully either.

Bishop says that the explosion will have "a blast radius of 30 kilometers; equal to about 40 megatons." 30 km is about 19 miles. There was a hydrogen bomb in 1961 called the 'Tsar Bomba' that was 57 megatons. *Total* destruction was up to about a 35km radius. The "fireball", or center of the explosion, was 3.5 km (around 2.2 miles), so everything in a 2 mile radius was completely and utterly destroyed. Factor in that Bishop says 40 megatons, so it's about 1/3 less than the Tsar Bomba, that's about a radius of 2.3 km (1.5 miles), so Hadley's Hope itself would have been totally decimated. Sorry Gearbox, you're wrong again.

@#24 - Well, 'theoretically', a fusion reactor wouldn't melt down or explode at all. But there is still a big thermonuclear explosion at the end that is entirely unavoidable.

And are you trying to suggest that when Bishop claimed the cloud would be the size of Nebraska he meant only vertically?

C'mon, that's just silly.

The point of the blast was to wipe out the Xenos, and obliterate the facility. They are shitting on the movie bit, if its set after the film on the same colony. Should've set in on a different colony + planet or something to make it make sense.
Ignorance of the source material aside, I hope its quality. Not generic.

@#23 No shit dude hence the statement underneath, they are simply trying to bring different enemies to the table cause it would be boring to kill the same xenomorph over and over again. And yeah maybe you don't see cows on Hadley's Hope in the movie, but you also gotta keep in mind when the marines get there everything is dead except Newt. The only glimpse you have of life before shit hits the fan is in the special edition of the movie, and even then all it shows is how they come across the eggs.

@29 - You sure you aren't a writer at Gearbox? ;-)

Speculation. But I don't think there were any farmers on LV-426.

"Terraformers...planet engineers. It's what we call a shake 'n' bake colony. They set up atmosphere processors to make the air breathable...big job. Takes decades."

Nope, no mention of farmers.

#21 Yeah I knew what you mean but BiA: Hell's Highway is awful BiA series and biggest letdown so 1st and 2nd series were awesome. BiA is nothing to do with COD or Halo I agreed. I love FPS with tactical like BiA and Rainbow Six series. God we need more of FPS with tactical gameplay. :P

@ 25&26

I am rather familiar with the "king of the bombs" and also that this is a video game sequel to a science fiction movie that both take place in the relatively distant future and real life events and things may not always apply. I mean if we were to apply real-world logic to the series it wouldn't be anywhere near as fun.

I also wouldn't trust the word of a Weyland-Yutani android myself, especially since he was the one who brought that egg onto the Sulaco...Mr. Burke was quite insistent after all.

Can't trust an Abominable Intelligence in the first place, even less when it's programmed by the very corporation attempting to capture one of these Xenos.

Also I doubt James Cameron had the foresight to think that someone would want to make a direct sequel, much less in video game form. :P

Personally I don't really care if they had to retcon "total" colony destruction. I want to walk through the colony myself, see the Derelict up close, wander the halls of the Sulaco, I want to get the whole "I know this place" or "I remember this" feeling. Pretty hard to do that in a crater, I'm willing to suspend my disbelief in that regard.

@23: So you personally took a stroll around the whole installation and took note that there were no livestock in this case cattle? Cuz short of that there's no goddamn way you'd know EXACTLY what was or wasn't on Hadley's Hope! You think the Star Wars movies ended after the first 3 films?

The story and characters went on in the universe so whos to say every type of development came to a halt after the alien movies? Maybe some mutated? Maybe there were cattle on the installation? You are not the final word on what is or was so i'd stop acting like it.

[pulling out his pump-action shotgun]
Hicks: I like to keep this handy... for close encounters.

Hudson: They're coming outta the walls. They're coming outta the goddamn walls.

Apone: All right, sweethearts, what are you waiting for? Breakfast in bed? Another glorious day in the Corps! A day in the Marine Corps is like a day on the farm. Every meal's a banquet! Every paycheck a fortune! Every formation a parade! I LOVE the Corps!

Hudson: Hey Vasquez, have you ever been mistaken for a man?
Vasquez: No. Have you?

Hudson: Stop your grinnin' and drop your linen!

Apone: Allright, sweethearts, you heard the man and you know the drill! Assholes and elbows!

i love that film :)
