More Rumoured 'Durango' Next-Gen Xbox Specs Surface
Written By
View author's profile

It's been less than a week since the last time supposed technical specifications for the next-generation of consoles hit the web, so it's high time for some more speculation surrounding the possible features and other technical bells and whistles you could find inside the box when Durango, Xbox 720 or whatever finally launches later in the year. That's assuming that the speculation thus far is all true, of course.

The latest rumoured specs have the next Xbox sporting a dedicated Kinect port, an integrated 'Natural User Interface', an eight-core 1.6GHz AMD CPU, a 50GB 6x Blu-ray disc drive, a 500GB HDD and a whole lot more besides, according to a document obtained by VGLeaks that alleges to have the full tech specs for the next-gen Xbox AKA Durango.

You can check out the full list of specs and a 'system block diagram' showing how all the technical gubbins apparently fit together below. Remember, this is all rumoured stuff however, and none of it's confirmed.

  • x64 Architecture
  • 8 CPU cores running at 1.6 gigahertz (GHz)
  • each CPU thread has its own 32 KB L1 instruction cache and 32 KB L1 data cache
  • each module of four CPU cores has a 2 MB L2 cache resulting in a total of 4 MB of L2 cache
  • each core has one fully independent hardware thread with no shared execution resources
  • each hardware thread can issue two instructions per clock

  • custom D3D11.1 class 800-MHz graphics processor
  • 12 shader cores providing a total of 768 threads
  • each thread can perform one scalar multiplication and addition operation (MADD) per clock cycle
  • at peak performance, the GPU can effectively issue 1.2 trillion floating-point operations per second
  • High-fidelity Natural User Interface (NUI) sensor is always present

Storage and Memory:

  • 8 gigabyte (GB) of RAM DDR3 (68 GB/s)
  • 32 MB of fast embedded SRAM (ESRAM) (102 GB/s)
  • from the GPU's perspective the bandwidths of system memory and ESRAM are parallel providing combined peak bandwidth of 170 GB/sec.
  • Hard drive is always present
  • 50 GB 6x Blu-ray Disc drive

  • Gigabit Ethernet
  • Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct

Hardware Accelerators:

  • Move engines
  • Image, video, and audio codecs
  • Kinect multichannel echo cancellation (MEC) hardware
  • Cryptography engines for encryption and decryption, and hashing

That's a hell lot of specifications that I don't understand.
I'll wait for some screens or videos of this next gen Xbox to understand at least a little bit his power. Still, I glad that we finally will have a Blu-Ray drive.

With the Blu-ray drive I hope this will end the era of games splitted in various discs. I kind hate switch discs in games like L.A. Noire, Max Payne and a few others.

The specs are pretty horrible. An Intel quad core with 3.4 GHz speed is like thousand times better than 8 cores with 1.6 GHz... And the graphics card suck compared to older model graphics card (like gtx 560 or radeon 6850).. I mean, if they're gonna charge 400+ euros/dollars/pounds for this shit, you guys should reconsider and buy an affordable PC gaming rig.. And I speak from personal experience, since I was an active console gamer for 5 long years, about half a year ago I bought a PC rig, and I can tell you, it was worth it.. no more crap FPS (30 MAX), amazing performance and the overall fluidity is amazing! Sorry for the long rant :))

The day the next generation of consoles is released, it is outdated.

Here, let me wipe your tears away.

All of this means nothing if launch consoles are overheating and getting the 'RRoD'. I guarantee it's going to happen again.

@10 I think your missing the point entirely, game consoles provide a cheaper alternative to play the latest games without issues, whereas a true PC Gamer will go through a Rig Cycle every 3-4 years. So this £350 - $400 console will last us 7-8 years and by that point you would've spent twice as much as a new Xbox just upgrading your PC. Not to mention the risk of virus infections, security issues and general upkeep that a PC is subject too.

everybody complaining its standard pc parts I don't understand do you want them to make like a 16 core ultra device with 30 gigs of ram problem with that is your gonna wind up with a 500-900 dollar price range, its about keeping costs low with adding enough newer hardware to as it is starting to get dated. I mean look at the wii u to add the controller with a screen and to keep costs low they had to gut the internal hardware that it barely above 360 and ps3 now

Out of curiosity for the PC guys on here if all that stuff was bundled into a PC would that run current gen games on high / ultra specs?

Having a PC myslef ive had nothing but hassle trying to get games to work on mine with cards not being compatable, having to mess round with settings. Its nearly as bad as a PS3 with its updates taking hours to download. Thats why i have my 360 for games. Disc in drive and ready to go in a few minutes max if i need an update.

We'll not have a big graphics jump this gen as we did from xbox to 360. Gaming seems to be coming less of M$'s focus in recent years.

As has been said though, you can by a PC now that'll run games better than the next xbox will. Having being a PC gamer in the past though i can say that you spend 50% of your PC time tweaking settings to get a game to play how you like so for 1/2 the price and 1/2 the hassle i'm willing to sacrifice some graphics power.

Oh boy more tech specs, here come the PC kids again hatin on the "out dated" specs to the new Xbox. Maybe I should listen to them and just go get a PCM so I can talk about my graphics card to anyone who will listen and then go post about it on forums too.

Side note: I know I'm in the minority here when I say I'm not happy with the move to blueray. Switching disks never bothered me and don't they read slowly? Will that mean installs like on my ps3 or will they just use the large disk size to duplicate data as needed?

Still wanted a turbografix 16 or psVita style game chip/ card instead of a dusk based system again.

@17 I see you your point, I DO miss sitting relaxed in a comfy sofa and playing games on a console, but I don't have to buy a new rig or update it excessively.. I mean, you can enjoy games on a PC as casually as on a console, if you want, PC gamers don't have to be hardcore..
@10 I didn't brag about my rig, actually I didn't mention my rig at all, I just pointed out the general benefits of owning a gaming rig
@21 You can buy the components at an amazingly reasonable price and have a techincal expert/friend to build it for you and there are many sites you can buy an affordable (400~500£$e)rig

If it actually launches this year I suspect most games will only be shit ports. Likely it wont launch untill next year as their are lots of AAA Titles coming this year for these sytems that are gonna make money hand over fist. Who is gonna go buy a new Xbox so soon after Buying GTA 4? Definatly not if there is no cross platform support.
If it does launch It'll likley be supported heavily for a few more years as the install base is so huge and for lots of people times are still tough. Buying new system for $500 is not likley especially when you can spend your $60 on the newest COD, Battlfield, Halo, etc and still play with all your friends still.
I guess we will all know for sure soon.

I will buy it day one if it is backwards compatible and if you can use your GT on the new one. Hints to all of your arcade games to at least transfer over..

If these 3 things happen then I am all for it, if not then I dont see why the should release it so soon. Sure it has been what since 2005 since the x360 came out. Not bad tbh, that is one heck of a console, although I did go through an amazing amount of them lol. I kept on getting a new one, Been gaing since the regular nintendo an will continue to on console based not PC based, nothing against PC's though...

I wish these companies would stop focusing on turning a game console to a DVR, all the money spent on researching and developing software to get it to function as a DVR could have been spent putting in more power in the GPU/CPU, giving us better graphics/physics/AI/etc, also allowing us game console gamers stay near PC games slightly longer.

Turning it into a DVR is all well and fine but I have equipment which does all the functions that the xbox does(Netflix, Blinkbox, LoveFilm, Iplayer, ITV Player, etc) using a whole lot less power.

Like I said for more then a year now, the Next Xbox will be coming out late October to early November of 2013.

Also it will be broken up into separate "bundles" that you can purchase for different amounts of money ranging from

$399.99 for the low end console.

$499.99 for the one everyone will actually want.

and I would not be shocked if it was a even higher price then what I stated. only time will tell.

I'm willing to pay $499.99, but I think I will wait 6 months or so AFTER the launch date for the improved console.

The hardware is not bad in terms of current PC specs. If you compare it to what the 360 has, it is a giant leap. Considering that console's run differently than PC's and do not keep an active OS going while games run, they are able to do more with less powerful hardware.

I doubt we will be seeing any giant leaps in graphics for at least 2 years as gaming companies begin to adjust to the new hardware. IMO, there's no rush to go out and get the new tech. If I decide to jump on anything, it won't be for another 2 years (price points come down, hardware stabilizes, companies have begun to optimize working with hardware, etc).

The only thing that I find a bit disconcerting is that Microsoft has plugging "better integration with Windows 8." So anyone who keeps their windows 7 are not horrible chuds and will get forgotten about IMMEDIATELY.

8 cores @ 1.6Ghz? even with dedicated hardware that's kinda weak. also i see no reason to not put a small solid state drive in for the os and just push the cloud storage. if MS would just use what tech is available to them they should have no problem blowing sony out the water.

500GBHDD at launch is a terrible idea, they will need atleast 1tb+ is they expect users to download next gen game DLC's, there files sizes will be much greater than current gen map packs/add-ons etc.

Then again MS/Sony would probably screw new owners with a lower HDD and deliberately release a separate 1tb drive for silly prices.

It's odd to see so many comments from people that don't understand this and then so much backlash against people that do. So let me try to give some examples of how these specs benefit players. With more cores, the more processes can be run at once. So with this, you're more likely to see more A.I. on screen at once. You're more likely to see 64 player matches in a game like Battlefield 3. In a game like Minecraft, you'll be able to have infinite procedurale generation instead of having a boxed limit and also way less likely to have lags and world holes. In a game like GTA4 you'd be less likely to drive so fast that the world doesn't load for you in time. These are actual game play benefits and not just making things look pretty. It'll make games more functional.

deffo needs a 1tb HDD specially as we moving into blu ray terrortary for dowloads, unless its like ps3 n installs episodic, which is terrible, on paper iv just bought a laptop which is similar specs to this, while its impressive at least developers only have to program for one set of specs and not ever increasing performance, i am waiting to see some gameplay from next gen though and see if it is as WOW as the leap from previous consoles would be, the only other thing is im wondering when to sell my current xbox to put money away for this one lol

Well, most of this goes way over my head. But I'm very happy to see it say that the hard drive is standard like with the original Xbox. But are we sure 500 GBs is big enough? Since it will be using Blu Ray discs I imagine we are going to see much bigger games, which of course will mean bigger installs on the hard drive. With games that could potentially take up 50 gigs plus DLC AND our previous 360 games, I can easily see that 500 getting very full very fast.

The average person is not going to absorb this.

The next-gen war depends on the exclusive titles (to me).

Playstation has always bettered xbox with exclusives.

I would take the:

Uncharted, Resistance, Killzone, Ratchet, Jak & Daxter, God of War, Gran Turismo, Heavy Rain, Infamous, LittleBigPlanet, MotorStorm, Warhawk & Yakuza franchises

over the:

Alan Wake, Crackdown, Fable, Forza, Gears Halo and PGR franchises

Seriously, what does MS actually have? I may have missed a few, but overall, the Sony exclusive library is superior, if the trend continues into the next gen, I'll probably start with the next Playstation.

So you clearly miss your 360 if you don't have it but still visit an Xbox 360 exclusive site. Does this mean you linger around on your ex's facebook page long after she left you too? Wait, why am I asking, of course you wouldn't have time for a relationship you'd be too caught up in and broke from maintaining your pc.

@57: Yes, exclusives likely will be what gets most people to pick one console or the other. That's one of the big reasons why I'll be getting the next Xbox. I haven't heard of a single Playstation exclusive that made me say "Damn, I wish I had a Playstation." But I do know I would hate to miss out on future Halo and Gears of War games.

Pretty solid hardware, still not great compared to PCs but at least everything will be up to date, however, at the rate PCs are advancing I won't be too surprised if this is already going to be considered a bit too much slack on Microsoft's account, especially on the 1.6ghz: my computer has double that D:

As long as I can keep my gamertag, gamerscore, play all my CURRENT Xbox Live Arcade games and the system must be backward compatible with ALL my current 360 games, then i'll buy it. If not, then i'm done gaming.

the specs given are nothing short of what a pc guy would describe his rig. and by the specs given, there is a lot of improvement. There all mid to low range parts. most mid tier graphics cards run at 900 Mhz and a blue ray player will just allow the use of more storage on disk (witch will be nice so we dont need a disk just to install maps i.e halo 4). also test have shown that the number of cores doesn't matter. most games wont even use 4 cores. but i guess the extra cores could be going to the kinect crap. wont matter for me ill find a way to turn it off.

really all they did was just add a stick of ram, replace the hard drive and update the GPU. it is nice to have the upgrade though.

@22 if those exact parts were in a PC then no its about mid range for a gaming rig atm it would play everything but be starting to struggle with newer games at full specs...

however thats because of how PCs differ from consoles, in a console this would run aswell as any high end pc now

and thats pretty usual anyway, consoles always look dated from the specs side by side with PC but they dont have to run all the extra cstuffa PC does along side the games

@1 it pretty much means its fucking powerful. that's on terms with some top pc's at the minute. Remember when Dice showed off BF3 that turned out to be PC. Well that's the sort of power the new xbox will have. if the rumours are true. Here's to hoping.

#57 Your exclusive argument is invalid due to your obssesion with overated but popular AAA games. With the exception of little big planet your list is full of generic titles for both systems.

Here are some titles your ps3 dosen't have, super meat boy, fez, minecraft, trails hd/evo, shadow complex, spelunky. I would take those over all the games in your list.

Absorb this, you are here to spread pointless negativity because you are bias, so toddle off back to the ps3 side of the site and keep your fan boy arguments to yourself.

I've owned almost every console since MasterSystem/NES and I can say that these days when a new console comes out there doesn't seem to be as much a jump in performance from the last.
If these rumours are believed to be true, I also feel a little let down by these specs, they sound a little low to be worthy of a good groundbreaking jump to the next generation which is what we need for many to part with there cash. I understand why a disc media is still used over solid state, solid state is far more per Gig to manufacture, though still pence, but will reflect in the retail cost of the games we purchase but some may be willing to pay for the speed of the solid state so maybe having both options may suit of the ability to install the content of a blu-ray game to a blank solid state card (played while disc in drive). For those PC gamers the Spec of a Console can't be compared to a PC as the hardware is specifically for gaming with a little media or social networking on the side while not gaming meaning no need for the ability of multitasking.
Maybe the proof will come when we receive an official announcement and some proof of the new consoles abilities.

If anything, Blu-ray was a no-brainer. Not only for simple competition with Sony, but in order for them to keep up with current media trends.

I think the standard next box would be £200 and the high end £300-350 I would happily pay to £400 if the specs were in the right place and obviously the games.

I doubt the console will be shipped with 500GB HDD on the first day, Xbox 360 had 20GB on launch but if it's true it will be awesome !

forgot to add that i'm stickin with handhelds now. the 3DSXL is reasonably priced. so too are the games. this system will be very expensive. the xbox brand has become a multi media hub. its turning to much into a pc. this should concern everyone. hackers will love this. i hope ms is smart about this. also i hope ms doesnt release a broken system like the 360. that really bugs me. ms released a system they knew was broken from the start. i'm not getting this unless its not broken. i'll wait a few yrs to see. the price and lack of quality. thats what will keep me away. the speed of the system is a concern. as an 80 times or faster drive will cause proablems with games with even the slightest scratch on it.

You guys are really taking this whole console debate out of context. When the 360 first dropped, the graphics were a HELL of alot better than the original xbox, now look at the graphical content in these games almost 10 years later. The developers have started to learn how to tweak a games performance through software, not the graphics card. The 720 is so far beyond the 360, the graphics and gameplay will surpass yet again our expectations. Maybe the first year the games will only be 30% better, but give it 2 years and the games will be exactly what you we're hoping for. YOu guys are complaining about nothing...

Not to mention 8 seperate CPU cores, thats far beyond our 2 3.2ghz cores right now and I have to say, if you played Halo 4 campaign, the graphics were pretty outstanding because of how big of a budget microsoft allowed them to have. Just think about this logically....8 cores (instead of 2), 8GB ram (instead of 512MB), Blu Ray (Instead of DVD), DirectX11 (instead of NOTHING) whats the problem here? Exactly...All of those specs, including developers using software and CPU's (Not GPU's) to tweak the performance and graphics of a game on consoles, it will be BEAST!

Though the hardware looks great, I wonder if the development process will change too abruptly. More people are familiar with the development processes during this generation of console development that I can't help but be concerned that there will be too big a change and leave many trying to pick up the pace.

500 gb hard drive sounds small. The new games will be 40-50 gb each. I was expecting a 1 tb drive at the least.

@ #71 Cainer

A true gamer. What systems do you all have still? I have 20 hooked up to my TV now, everything from the Coleco Vision on up. No WiiU.

On a side note: Why do we think games will about 50 gigs again next gen?

50 gigs seems pretty high, but then again I don't know. LA Noire is 25 gigs. I remember one comment which seemed to complain about needing to install games to your hard drive. I bought a new console about 6 months ago, and I won't play a game without installing it to the hard drive. The console runs much more quietly and smoothly. I highly recommend installing all your games before you play them to preserve your Xbox console.

There are some PS games which I really want to play, like Heavy Rain, God of War, Heavenly Sword, and Demon Souls. But I'm glad that I chose Xbox over Playstation. I only wish I had both consoles.

I am looking forward to the next gen console, and these specs look promising.

A little late in the game, but just to point out the "Hard drive is always present" note. Most likely this will ship with 500GB HDD but will allow you to add more later on. MS wouldn't want to ship it with 1TB because they wouldn't make money on larger storage options.

Also, some of you may think these specs are low. But consider the application and form factor. You're packing all that into something no bigger than your cable set-top box.

One more thing, I wish they had a small permanent SDD that only ran the main system information and cache. That would increase the cost but boy would that thing fly!

500 gb does seem small considering most games will use up a huge chunk of that blu ray disc and I tend to install my most played games onto my hard drive. I'm probably gonna end up upgrading whenever they announce bigger hard drives.

@25 Of course we need a new console. The current one can barely handle how complex the dashboard is now. It would be nice to have that be quick and crisp instead of the lag for the damn thing to load up. And they should have a platinum level above gold with no ads.

I think that these specs look really good for a home console. For all of the people ragging on the CPU:

8 Cores running at 1.6GHz. Do you know how much this tells us about the performance of this CPU? Nothing. I can imagine that the lower clock speed has been chosen for two very good reasons:

1. Lower TPW, so less chance of the console overheating
2. Better tolerances in the chip production, resulting it better yeilds, which will keep manufacturing costs down.

However, what we don't know is two important things. Does this support multi-threading? If it does, that would give 16 Threads, which would be insane. The other thing that we don't know is how efficient the instruction pipeline is. If the processor has a high IPC, it would be the same as running a less efficient processor at even higher clock speeds.

Lets not forget though - this is still all rumour. Until Microsoft officially confirm any specs, the next Xbox might turn out to be powered by a Ti-80

Hate having to reply to my own post, but just noticed I'd missed a couple of details:

1 Hardware Thread per core, so not 16 threads. 2 IPC, so similar to having 8 cores, 3.2Ghz, but only 1 IPC. A Core i7 apparently only does 1.1 IPC, so this would be similar to an 8 Core i7 running at 2.9Ghz.

All that seems good and fine, but I'm starting to wonder how much longer our Televisions can keep up lol. I hope 1080p (etc) last at least 5 more years as the standard.
