Written By
View author's profile

Capcom has released the first proper, concrete details for Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen, the hefty expansion for the sprawling RPG that takes your adventurer to the Bitterblack Isle, just off the Gransys mainland. You'll be able to export your existing character and save data over to the Dark Arisen expansion, with an array of new quests to tackle.

As well as offering a huge new area, new missions and enemies, you'll unearth incredible treasure as you face a new threat that's emerged from deep within the cavernous depths of Bitterblack Isle. Owners of the original Dragon's Dogma will be able to download the Dark Arisen expansion and obtain 100,000 Rift Crystals, unlimited Ferrystones and the Gransys Armour Pack consisting of six brand new costumes for free.

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen will also be available to purchase on disc and will include all of the content from the original Dragon's Dogma as well as the following Dark Arisen content:

  • More skills/equipment/augments:
    • Level 3 Skills
      • DD: DA provides each character class with a new tier of skills, giving players new devastating abilities and skills to master
    • Over 100 pieces of new equipment
      • All new high level weapons and armor sets for players venturing into the underground caverns
    • 14 new character/Pawn augments
    • New tiers of equipment enhancement
  • And there’s more:
    • Increased character customisation options
    • Item appraisal
    • Option to select Japanese voice over

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen will also herald the arrival of a new, more intuitive menu system and easier travel around Gransys. These improvements will be retrofitted for owners of the original Dragon's Dogma.

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen will be available on April 23rd in North America and April 26th in Europe for $39.99. Check out the cover art, trailer and screens below. There's 15 images showing the Elder Ogre and Strigoi monster in the gallery.

Every other company take note (minus Bethesda), this is how DLC should be done. I don't want 1 hour of new gameplay for $5. I want a big expansion pack. Shivering Isles and this are doing it right.

I'm not buying this one unless I know for sure the game will fully support my 1920x1080p resolution on my TV.

Drove me nuts that there we black horizontal bars on the top and bottom of the screen when playing the game. Game should easily be able to support such a resolution.

So is the achievement list for the disc version going to have a separate achievement list? Or will it be like the original plus DLC?

Never thought I'd see the words "free" and "Capcom" in the same sentence. Nor did I have hopes for a decent expansion for this game....I just thought they would release more armor/weapon packs. I'm still a bit skeptical though.

There's no free expansion DLC, the editor read it wrong and paraphrased it wrong.

From Capcom Unity:
http://www.capcom-unity.com/neilgortz/blog/2013/01/23/delve-deep-into-terror-with-dragons-dogma-dark-arisen-this-april

The full game AND expansion are coming out in disc or digital download together, the expansion won't be available stand-alone.

The free stuff for original owners are the crystals, stones and armor pack.

That's why they say it's possible to export to game data to this version.

It's kinda like Street Fighter 4 and Super Street Fighter 4, but you can export your save from one to the other.

Yeah I think you guys need to cool it a bit. Just because a run-on sentence ended in free, doesn't means this whole expansion is free. My money is on the armor and stuff was free if you still had the game, and the expansion will have a price. Before people get pissed when they find out they gotta pay, because they bought the old version on the cheap rather than waiting for the combined version, we need some kind of confirmation on costs and such.

Free expansion is nice of them, but I can probably find a copy, used most likely, for less than what the new one will cost. Thinking logically, that's not good business. It's one thing to make it free, and another to spend the money printing new discs and cases when they won't be making anything back.

I knew it was too good to be true, especially from Capcom. So basically, we have to buy the whole game again if we want to play the expansion.

Crybaby cry, 29.

PC expansions always have and still regularly do cost $40. That's exactly what they're doing here, except for first-time players they're giving you the original game for free. This is excellent for new players, and for those that already have it it's the same as anything else.

This isn't DLC, it's an expansion. Console games rarely get expansions so you all simply don't seem to want to understand what is going on.

Considering Amazon has not tried to sell the game for less than $40 ever, and only before Christmas was it below $45, this seems like a great deal to me. I'll buy it.

The real issue here is that so many of the users of this site clearly don't know how to read. The content sounds great to me. Are people seriously upset because they have to pay for an expansion?

@29 No that's not what it means at all. You can buy the expansion separately...like any other DLC. This article is just telling you about a retail release for the expansion that comes packaged with the original game.

You people need to chill man, its like you look for any little to complain about.

Go see the original article on Capcom Unity:
http://www.capcom-unity.com/neilgortz/blog/2013/01/23/delve-deep-into-terror-with-dragons-dogma-dark-arisen-this-april

It will NOT be released as separate DLC, Dark Arisen is being released as a FULL game.

Okay then this article is patently wrong because according to how it reads, it implies you could buy it separately from this part right here:

"Owners of the original Dragon's Dogma will be able to download the Dark Arisen expansion and obtain 100,000 Rift Crystals, unlimited Ferrystones and the Gransys Armour Pack consisting of six brand new costumes for free.

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen will also be available to purchase on disc and will include all of the content from the original Dragon's Dogma as well as the following Dark Arisen content:"

Following the announcement of Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen last year we are now pleased to confirm concrete details about this expansion to the world of Dragon’s Dogma. Scheduled for release on both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 from April 23 in North America and April 26 across Europe, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen is the next exciting chapter in the Dragon’s Dogma franchise. Coming both on a physical disc and as a full game digital download, the title delivers a huge brand new area, missions, enemies and more, plus all of the content from the original game. Hit the jump for details, screenshots, and a trailer!

Just off the Gransys mainland is the cursed Bitterblack Isle and it is here that gamers will discover an underground realm, complete with new terrifying foes to face and incredible treasure to find as they embark on an all new quest. Owners of the original Dragon’s Dogma will be able to export their existing characters and all other saved data, to continue their journey as the Arisen and face this new threat that has emerged from the cavernous depths. Players will be able to take their characters to new heights, with brand new high-level skills and augments as well as all new weapons and armour sets. For those that missed Dragon’s Dogma the first time around, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen provides the opportunity to start their journey from the very beginning before tackling the all new content.

Furthermore, owners of the original Dragon’s Dogma will receive the following for free on purchasing Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen: 100,000 Rift Crystals, unlimited Ferrystones and the Gransys Armour Pack consisting of six brand new costumes.

Based on player feedback, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen will make the Dragon’s Dogma gameplay experience even more satisfying, with improvements such as easier travel and a more intuitive menu system. For those who already own Dragon’s Dogma and then purchase Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, these improvements will be automatically retrofitted to their original game.

So, what does Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen deliver?

All of the content from the original Dragon’s Dogma plus…
A massive new underground realm to explore featuring over 25 terrifying new enemies
More skills/equipment/augments: Level 3 Skills DD:DA provides each character class with a new tier of skills, giving players new devastating abilities and skills to master

Over 100 pieces of new equipment All new high level weapons and armor sets for players venturing into the underground caverns.

14 new character/Pawn augments
New tiers of equipment enhancement

And there’s more: Increased character customisation options
Item appraisal
Option to select Japanese voice over

Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen will be available for purchase across Europe as follows:

April 26: PlayStation 3 both disc and digital versions, with the digital version priced at €29.99/£19.99

April 26: Xbox 360 disc based version (with a digital version to follow as a Games on Demand title in the Summer)

In North America Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen will be available at retail stores for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and as a download from PlayStation Network on April 23, 2013 for $39.99.

@30 I can see how it would be a deal for those who haven't purchased the game. But there are those who paid the original $59.99 for the game, and paying another $39.99 for an expansion is ludicrous. The most expansion packs usually range from $20-$30, not $40.

Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening was $40 and followed a similar route but didn't have the full game on the disc. This is actually better because you get not only the full game but the huge expansion.

Hadn't got this game yet because it's still going for 59.99 retail everywhere around where I live, but this makes me want the game and the expansion that much more. I am definitely liking the added freebies too. From what I understand all I you have to do to get them is own the game? So meaning, everyone who has a copy of the game will get those freebies?

@#6 - When has there ever been DLC for $15 that only lasted an hour? (Actually asking, I refuse to buy things that are that much digitally anymore, and most of my games have DLC for $5-10, but I get it discounted). Though I have seen $10 - 1 hour DLC.

But RE5 had $5 1 hour DLC.

@#14 - This would be funny if it wasn't tired and stupid now. RE6 has given out a lot of free dlc (RE.net costume swaps, Agent, No Hope Difficulty). Granted, it was on disc, but it was still free (as it should be). ORC had free DLC, the original Dead Rising.

Divinity 2: Ego Draconis cane out a few years ago, then saw an expansion The Dragon Knight Saga. When they released the expansion on 360 they gave the original game an upgrade and released both the original game and the expansion on 1 disc and it cost $40.

So this has been done before. Don't see why people have to complain about it.

Enjoyed this game but releasing add-ons almost a year after it came out is crazy. Most people moved on long ago and most of them don't revisit old games.

@6 I don't know exactly how long certain DLC packs last but I know stuff that has sold for 800-1200 MS points that totally wasn't worth the price. One recent example is ME3's Omega DLC. I believe that DLC is roughly four hours long and in my opinion, terrible in quality. Even without the latter, is that worth $15? I don't think so.

I was just making a joke about the 1 hour part but in all seriousness, DLC today is typically overpriced. Compared with some standout DLC packs, its apples and oranges. Old World Blues is said to be about 10 hours long and has fantastic written dialogue. That's good value if you ask me.
