DmC: Devil May Cry has topped the Japanese software charts this week, but it’s not all good news for the Ninja Theory reboot.

Despite hitting the top spot, DmC sold less than half of what its predecessor, Devil May Cry 4, did upon on launch week in Japan five years ago.

According to Media Create, the Ninja Theory reboot sold 110,429 copies on PS3 and less than 5,500 copies on Xbox 360. That’s compared to Devil May Cry 4, which sold 205,390 on PS3 and 40,023 on Xbox 360 in its debut week in 2008.

Media Create’s figures differ from those provided by Famitsu. Sales figures reported by the Japanese magazine (via NeoGAF) state that DmC sold 115,438 copies on PS3 and 5857 copies on Xbox 360.

As for hardware, the Xbox 360 continued to struggle in Japan, selling just 706 units last week. Comparatively, the PS3 sold 19,697 units.

Full Media Create sales chart for the week of 14th - 20th January:

(Lifetime sales in brackets)

  1. DmC Devil May Cry (Capcom, PS3): 110,429 (New)
  2. Animal Crossing: New Leaf (Nintendo, 3DS): 97,448 (2,283,756)
  3. Digimon Adventure (Namco Bandai, PSP): 47,807 (New)
  4. New Super Mario Bros. 2 (Nintendo, 3DS): 17,803 (1,873,642)
  5. Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (Best Price!) (Capcom, 3DS): 13,728 (184,139)
  6. Inazuma Eleven Go 2: Chrono Stone Reimei / Neppuu (Level-5, 3DS): 12,019 (391,389)
  7. Run For Money: Flee From the Strongest Hunters in History (Namco Bandai, 3DS): 11,684 (399,382)
  8. Paper Mario: Sticker Star (Nintendo, 3DS): 11,055 (495,922)

  17. Tongari Boushi to Mahou no Machi (Konami, 3DS): 6,045 (133,846)
  18. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity (Pokemon, 3DS): 5,873 (421,881)
  19. Taiko Drum Master Wii Super Wonderful Edition (Namco Bandai, Wii): 5,844 (360,313)
  20. Pokemon Black & White 2 (Pokemon, NDS): 5,724 (29,948,796)

Hardware-wise there weren't many surprises. Most sales are down this week due to few major releases or post-holiday sales, though curiously the Wii is the only console to have improved sales since last week, albeit by only a paltry 326 units.

The full hardware sales are below (last week's sales in parenthesis):

  1. 3DS LL: 51,015 (56,377)
  2. 3DS: 30,840 (36,284)
  3. PlayStation 3: 19,697 (22,991)

Japanese companies do better in Japan. Whoever would have guessed. As for DMC, maybe it's just not as good as they hoped. Combat seems dumbed down and simplified. The story wasn't that interesting. They destroyed some of the characters we know and love. Shit happens.

Figures are slow because lets face it, this gen has been dragged out a little bit too long.

Most people who want Consoles have got them now, and why buy new games when there are hundreds of quality older games that are available for much cheaper.

I have missed out on loads of titles when they came out due to the sheer number available now, so I just pick up the older titles on the cheap.

The industry needs the new consoles to liven it up a bit. We have been playing on the same machines for nearly 8 years and the excitement is starting to go.

But how well did DMC HD Collection do in Japan? Are they big fans of DMC even? For example, Resident Evil is popular outside of Japan and not really in Japan. Likewise, from Nintendo, Metroid is only really popular in the western world.

Those being the top sales and being low just implies Japanese aren't really buying -anything- right now. They're probably bored to hell with PS3/360 games and are waiting for the next gen.

Also, if you notice, almost that entire list is portable games.

Dante Must Die difficutly is easy mode for the average japanese adept.

This'll be the first DMC I'll complete (I kinda suck at it), and not with much pride either... it's too easy.

Nothing insular about here in Japan - look at iPhone and McDonalds sales figures!

Xbox and xbox360 both bombed because Microsoft haven't had a clear strategy and have been outfought on every front by Sony and Nintendo. The market exists, MS just have no idea how to exploit it and need some serious change at the top of the Japanese team.

Some people laugh at how annoyed people were at Dantesque new look, the few Japanese people I know take that hate to a whole new level, they absolutely despise the new Dante, and not just his looks.

"Not a bad end to a story that has seen all kinds of crap thrown at developer Ninja Theory"

Not a bad end indeed. DmC fails and we get what we want. DMC 5. Glad people actually voted with their wallets this time. Can't say they didn't ask for this the way they treated the fans.

If Microsoft was smart they'd hire some old Sony/Nintendo reps to help out in Japan.

Nintendo practically owns the Japanese market.

@15 your an idiot, you obviously havent played it. There fore you have no right to an opinion on it. Its so ridiculous that all these people keep bashing a game they havent played! Everyone that played it loves it, if you dont believe me then hit the DMC forums! And x360A gave it over a 90. And Im pretty sure they were skeptic at first too. Dont judge a book by its cover.

I have been a DMC fan since I was little. I was not on board at first but I gave it a try and preordered it. And the new DMC was very well done. The combat is actually more fluent than any of the others. The story was spectacular. This almost feels like it could be a prequel to DMC 3. So far I am very happy i bought this. And 3 of my friends watched me play 2 levels and they all bought it the same day and have expressed how much they love it as well. From the forums, everyone that bought it seems to really like it. We need more developers that believe in change like ninja theory. Without people like them, every game will just be like call of duty. Repeated series with some menu changes. Next time people. Actually play the game before talking shit.

Id like to see the EU/US DmC figures to see if it did well out west. The thing that has me worried is that capcom might just cut their losses and stop the franchise all together, look at onimusha, i loved that series and (from what i know) it sold well but after the 4th game didnt do as good as they wanted they just let the series die, bad choice capcom.

Also #17, i played DmC and have to say its not that good, i mean its more or less DMC2.5, most of the backgrounds are bland, no enemy variation and its WAY to easy(i know that sounds douchey but its true). I do like the story though and like all ninja theory games the mocap is great.

P.S. I wasnt one of those "his hair is different, burn in hell" types, I was pissed about the story getting changed, story reboots are a punch in the face of long time fans!

@19 DMC 4 Would've probably been the best in the series, that is, if they hadn't cut out content for the game. There was plenty of content to pick from, but instead we got a lot of backtracking.

@18 No enemy variations? Are you blind, or do you not know what variation means?

Anyway who really expected this to outsell older DMC titles in Japan, this is a western title. This doesn't mean anything. I want to see overall first weeks sales, then you can really compare and speculate. Worldwide sales is what determines a sequel.

@24, Well, I could be wrong, but I believe variation is an old, old wooden ship that was used during the Civil War era!

Giving an enemy a shield or making him white or red isnt variation, its the same enemy!

@25, I think it'd be odd if players of the game cared about an old wooden ship, but nice try anyway.

That was a very well placed reference, sir. Kudos.

Western are more interested of DmC than Eastern of Earth were. Maybe because Dante is young and fashion hair. But I don't think it is main problem for Japanese. It's because less numbers of Japan players is in interest of Xbox 360. They more interests with 3DS, PS3, Wii U, PSVita, Wii and PSP since all consoles and handelds came from Japanese markets business - Nintendo and Sony of course. So I don't think sells DmC caused for Xbox 360 because of Dante look. I believe because Japan players like Japan consoles and handheld more then only Western console is Xbox 360. Look at PS3 game of DmC sells well is because of DmC fans over there used to loved and played original series on PS2 and PS3 so we knew PS3 will sells well for DmC: Devil May Cry.

I am expect later this year Wii U will runs up over PS3 for sells and maybe not or could above first place for sells. We have wait and see how it is well sells later this year. Maybe next Xbox surprises us that Japan players changed their mind and want get it instead of Sony console or PS4 could still hold just like PS3 now and not Xbox 360.

Will very interests to see next Xbox (if it is real coming this year), PS4 (again if real coming this year also) and Wii U later this year for battle sells over there. It not console wars it just sells compares.

Personally, I loved this game. However, it cannot compete with DMC 1, 3, and 4. I actually loved 4. The backtracking wasn't that bad, and playing as Dante with the easy style change was awesome. Nero was a blast to play as, too. Still, nothing beats DMC3. While I would love DMC5 with Better Dante and Nero returning, I wouldn't mind a DmC2 as well. If I could have both, I would be happy. I would be happy with just DMC5, though.

@#17 xbox360achievements gave it a 90. Not over 90, 90. I feel the user score should carry more weight since it is a collective score rather than just one person. I gave it an 85 personally.

Right because the only difference is that some have shields and are different colors. We didn't fight Lesser Stygians(some had bladed arms while others had spiked clubs), Stygians(who can block certain attacks and have a different attack pattern than lesser S), Elite Stygians,(who also have a different weapon, look differently with different attacks), Ravagers, Death Knights(Hell and Frost, shields different colors and attacks), Dream Runners, Drekavac(a more agile dream runner with a red mask and the ability to counter), Bathos, Pathos, Harpies, Witches, Rages, Blood Rages, Ghost Rages, Tyrants, Butchers, Demon Cameras, and Demonic Shards. Not too mention the Bosses. Yeah all of these enemies look the same and attack with the same patterns. You are right sir no variation at all... stupid. You don't like the game fine, it is too easy for you fine, your opinion but don't make stupid comments like that and try to pass it as fact.

I like to see what the sales for dmc was in the west.

Maybe people aren't buying videogames when they are first out because of how much stores are charging for them. I bought dmc today but only because my sister and I went half and half. GAME was charging £42 while HMV was charging £40.
