Dead Space 3
Dead Space 3 to Include Microtransactions, Visceral Explains
Written By
View author's profile

Dead Space 3 will include microtransactions that will enable players to download resources for the game's weapon crafting benches, allowing players to create formidable weapons quicker than usual for staving off the relentless hordes of spiky Necromorph monstrosities.

These microtransactions are positioned as time savers and are entirely optional, as Visceral Games has explained. "Not much has been spoken about that, but I can tell you the details now," Visceral's John Calhoun told CVG. "The way the micro-transactions work, is that there’s only three things that you can buy, and they’re basically tiers of different resources. Resources are extremely valuable in Dead Space – we got rid of credits entirely."

Calhoun went on to list some of the resources you can purchase with real money or scavenge in-game: “Everything that you can find in the game can be constructed from resources, which includes Tungsten, Semi-Conductors, Somatic Gel. Combining these in different ways will create either a weapon part, an ammo pack or an upgrade to Isaac’s suit.

“There’s a lot of players out there, especially players coming from mobile games, who are accustomed to micro-transactions. They’re like “I need this now, I want this now”. They need instant gratification. So we included that option in order to attract those players, so that if they’re 5000 Tungsten short of this upgrade, they can have it.

“There’s also the hardcore Dead Space players, who are reluctant to spend money outside the purchase of the game. Honestly, most of the dev team are that way, we’re kind of old school, a little bit older. So not only are the micro-transactions completely optional, but all packs are available to purchase using in-game resources that you find."

We're deep into playing Dead Space 3 for our review at the moment, and keep forgetting to send out our reliable old scavenger bot, who'll help you to gather those invaluable resources before taking them to your bench, as Calhoun explains: “So, your scavenger bot will go out, and sometimes when he comes back he’ll deliver ration seals. You’ll start to accumulate ration seals at a pretty steady clip throughout the game, and everything that can be purchased with real world dollars can also be purchased with ration seals.”

What do you reckon? Will you be patient enough to gather the required resources to craft that combined tesla core and shotgun you've been eyeing up, or would you rather buy the bits you need straight away?

Dead Space 3 is out on February 5th in North America and February 8th in Europe.

They've been in EA games for at least two years, if not more. Fight Night Champion and Mass Effect 1 had lots of microtransactions.

How about you tell the 'I want it now' Crowd, to fuck off and either play the game properly as the devs intended, or fuck off.

I don't get why you would spend £40 on something and want it to be done as quickly as possible, it's just stupid.

Most of these people will probably be kids I'm guessing, who have been taught that they don't have to work towards anything to achieve it, the clouds are made of marshmallows, Unicorns are real and there really is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

How about showing those who are used to microtransactions how stupid the idea is in the first place by not adding them into the game? Or better yet, keep these optional microtransactions and sell the game to be for £0.99 just like actual mobile games, you don't see any mobile app store with a game more expensive than £1.00 unless you're Squeenix.

EA money grabbing? You don't HAVE to buy the upgrades. If you choose not to, it doesn't affect you in any way. You can simply ignore it.

It's not like you are buying an advantage in a multiplayer situation.

It's not the first game to have this kind of thing in it.

NFS (I forgot which one, but it's a few years old) has "buy now for MSP" upgrades.
ME3 has buy-able crates for MSP, instead of earning credits.
FIFA has buy-able UT packs and coins, which you could just earn by playing.

At the end of the day, if you can earn the guns by playing the game, who cares?

They think the mobile gaming crowd needs instant gratification, they should see the achievement crowd when achievements are too hard or take too long.

@16 Well, if you would have read the article you would have seen the word "optional", which means you don't need them or have to use them.

They did this with Battlefield 3, too. It's fine. Surprisingly it wasn't game-breaking, either, considering Battlefield 3's "pay-to-unlock" microtransactions were all for multiplayer.

It's optional. You can still get everything you need from playing the game normally. So what if someone wants to pay to get something early? How does that affect your experience in any way? It doesn't. It is time to quit the bitching and just get over yourself.

Who actually can afford to waste money on these in-game transactions?
I think people are well within their rights to moan about things like this - it's the tip of the iceberg - next it will be compulsory. Just seems like another way to squeeze money out of EA game buying customers - which I suppose they don't mind about as they keep buying the games.

I for one would never spend real money in-game. These instant gratification folk should try a little patience

As it is a popup every time you go into the crafting menu (possibly elsewhere?) it breaks immersion. It is not something I want in any of my games in such an OVERT way. As such, I will not be purchasing this nor any other games, from hence forward, that include it in this style where it can't be disabled nor removed from sight.

I think this is fine if its truly optional? Sounds like its just a way to get components for crafting easier... They kinda do this already in a few games, like sleeping dogs which did some "buy this pack for extra xp for you character"...
However you should be able to get these items readily in the main game and they shouldn't be made uber rare to force people to buy them. And there absolutely should be no achievements ok linked to this sorta stuff (haven't looked at the Dead Space 3 list yet, but I'm talking in general for this sorta feature).
Personally I don't plan on using this because I see it as close to cheating. Maybe it's a strong word but that's my first instinct.

I don't really know why people are flipping out on this. If people want to waste their money on resources that can be unlocked normally through progression, let them. It is, you know, a campaign-based game. No PvP multiplayer, so it's not like their going to use micros to gain an advantage on competition. I'm not buying anything from these micros, and neither do you.

I don't like it, but so long as all this is achievable in game, I don't mind. For me, microtransactions are the same as buying a book and going straight to the last chapter. Sure, it saves time, but it also means you're basically paying money to get less time and bang for your buck out of the game.
Me? I love nothing more than something that takes saving up 'dollar' to buy, like the PGR4 buyable achievement, or buying the Solus greatsword in Fable 1... although there are limits, like that Ferrari GTO in forza 3. 20 million? You can sod off.

This is far worse then what sleeping dogs did with the stat boosting clothes (some of the clothes pack come free with pre-order) as the DS3 Micro payments are 1 use item payments. With SD clothes pack, you can re-use them every time you play

The godfather game on 360 had weapons that you could only buy with realy money and don't be surprised if they do this again for eg Dead space 4. Thats the problem I have, seem it won't be optional

@36 So say an achievement in this game was to fully upgrade a certain weapon type or craft one (I've not checked the achievements but seeing as this is a huge new feature I'm sure it'll be in there) wouldn't that be classed as completing the game? Especially in regards to the website you are trying to prove your invalid point on, go somewhere else with your condescending tone or do you actually want micro-transactions to work with console gaming? You're either incredibly stupid or John Riccitiello

This isn't that bad, honestly. The worst offender I've ever seen of the "Micro Transactions" has got to be Battlefield 3.

"Max out your class and unlock everything in it for real money if you can't be bothered to earn it yourself! While we're at it... Do the same for vehicles and a few of the weapons!"

All of that is for multiplayer.

At least with the singleplayer stuff, the only experience you're ruining is your own.

I see no problem with these kinds of micro-transactions for one reason:

Anything you can purchase with real $$ can be done in game for free. I plan to play the game, and plan to get the upgrades for free. If someone wants to spend real $$ to save time, good for them.

Also, like other have pointed out...this is nothing new for EA. Medal of Honor 2010, Warfighter, Battlefield BC 2, Battlefiels 3, and nearly every Need for Speed going back over the last 4 years or so has "shortcut" packs available where you could buy guns or cars instead of unlocking them in game.

@40 First. Because I don't agree with you or point out that you don't have to do what you're saying to complete the game, I'm stupid? And you're calling me condescending? Lmao. And this is an achievement site, I'm a fan of achievements, it's open to everyone last time I checked. I didn't realize people who didn't share your views and opinions weren't allowed here, I guess this site is just for people who react without putting any thought into anything and assume the worst at every turn.

Second. I'm pointing out that you don't have to pay to get that achievement if that achievement is in the game. It can be done in game without having to purchase a microtransaction, it's optional, and there for the people who might WANT it. I can still buy, play, finsih, complete, enjoy this game without having to buy any microtransactions.

Third. As long as they are optional, I don't care if microtransactions come to consoles, it won't be the end of the world or ruin gaming like people are assuming.

If this is just another name for a shortcut pack I see nothing wrong with it but I will also need to see the pricing. One of my main fears is microtransactions becoming necessary under the guise of "optional" in the near future of gaming.

I personally don't see why the assumption of "I need this, I want this now" has been made.myself, like many others, will put in a vast amount of effort to get stuff done in games. It's effectively buying cheats in game now. It will enable almost a god mode in game and takeaway any challenge. Thad what the Dead Space games are all about. Either way, buy the stuff or don't. Not being forced too, so speak with your wallets if it concerns you. I will just buy the game and play it like it's meant to.

I think the kicker will be how this plays out in game. It says we can get all of this stuff in game, although they've done away with credits. That makes it sound like they would prefer us to use real money instead of in game currency, but does the game actually play out that way though? THAT is what will make or break the game for me. If it has a new system that still lets us access what we need at good times and good pacing then it's all fine to me. If donkeys want to pay extra real money just to get good gear faster then so be it, it's their call and it doesn't hurt me at all. If the game is nerfed to make accessing this stuff more difficult or time consuming though, then THAT is wrong, and a deliberate attempt to fuck people over.

The other question is of implementation. If it pops up in crafting menus and isn't well integrated to seem like part of the game, then they're breaking the immersion of the experience just to further line their pockets. I'm all for helping new gamers from mobile gaming cross over to mainstream gaming, but not at the expense of the people who have been gaming for years, who love their gaming as a complete, experience.

@50 wasn't making a point, I'm just sick of EA telling us we need something we never asked for. Nothing good will come of Micro-transactions, the more people blindly accept them the more they'll be integrated into games and play more defining roles in how we play games in the future, online passes are evidence of this.

Anyone who has said "if it is truly optional" are not familiar with EA's version of optional. By the truest sense of the word, it is optional but the system essentially forces it on you.

1. they stick it in where you are blindly clicking just to get further along. They did this in more than one Need for Speed. I got to the confirm purchase menu for XBLA before clicking cancel before. If you don't have the in game credits, the default option for clicking is to buy. Sneaky and manipulative to say the least.

2. In the newest Tiger Woods it is possible to get all the courses for free instead of buying them but you would have to put in 1000s of hours to do so. So while it is optional, it isn't realistic.

@56 So you're saying that micro-transactions are justified? Because online passes are certainly justified.

90% of you are hypocrites. You cry when an achievement list is hard/takes too much of your precious time and you can't 100% it as quick as you'd like, but then you mock people who don't want to take time collecting virtual resources and want items asap. News flash - its the same thing. Except they actually CAN get their items asap, and you can't buy your achievement points.

Anyone, and I mean ANYONE, who complains about micro-transactions like these is an idiot. Use whatever excuse you want, it doesn't matter. These micro-transactions don't hinder your game. They don't give others an unfair advantage over you (its co-op, you should WANT your partner to have good stuff). They don't allow people to get exclusive items that you can't get in-game normally. There is literally no reason to be upset over the inclusion of these....but its the internet, so people will cry anyways.

micro-transactions are somewhat understandable in mobile games only, but why try to merge them into console games? Mobile games are a lot of the times free or fairly cheap, so it's understandable that the devs try to get some money since their game doesn't cost that much in the first place. But buying a $60 plus micro-transactions just doesn't make sense. Mobile games and console games are two completely different spaces...stop trying to blend them together!

I kinda thought the point of survival horror was the scarcity of resources and difficulty in staying alive. Having microtransactions to appeal to a certain demographic makes sense financially speaking from the company's point of view, but I'm just saddened by the fact that such a demographic even exists. Hard Core mode shouldn't allow the use of microtransactions period in my opinion.

@15. Yeah, so long as you can't buy a win in multiplayer it shouldn't matter. But publishers are constantly testing the water to see how much they can get away with (I think we all know EA is behind this). So what worries me is where this could lead.

@65. Which brings me to my next point. Dead Space 2's Hard to the Core achievement was almost impossible without one of the DLC packs. And they were already on the disk. Six weapons and two suits of armor = 60KB? I don't think so. They locked the tools we needed to complete the game then charged us 400 points to get them back.

When I was younger cheats were codes you input when you were lazy. This is basically paying for cheats and is absolutely awful.
Plus I have a feeling they will make the rate of resource gathering low to try and make you buy them. Like in the mobile games the gold is always really rare. Or you need shitloads. Or they make a level really hard and make boosts available to buy. Fair few games I got on mobile I get to the last couple of levels no problem then boom the difficulty amps up 10fold and I get conveniently reminded that for just a few good (£10) I can make myself stronger.

I understand that these microtransactions are entirely optional, but it still seems a bit silly. Real money should only be used to get the game in your hands, not help you complete it. I have no idea how hard it is to collect these resources, but if the player feels the need to pay IRL moneh for them, maybe the system wasn't designed the best.

"Players need "instant gratification"."

Then how about rewarding players with in-game unlockable rewards like games used to do, instead of now locking said rewards or modes on the disc and then charging for it as DLC?

I fully expect them to come out with some stupid day 1 DLC special suits or weapons like they did with DS2.

People, let's not get into a slippery slope here. As long as these microtransactions are kept reasonable and optional, there's no problem. EA is just giving the players power whether to enjoy the game by itself or completely ruin the experience by making you super powerful/well-equipped at the first chapter.

Truth is however, some people have just too much money to spend or are unwise on where to spend their money.

EA have been doing this for a while. Need for speed, Tiger woods spring to mind... Does kinda fuck me me off that they offer you all the best shit at the beginning of the game just so you can breeze right through it... But a fool and his money are soon departed and EA know this (after all... Who keeps buying the same old sports franchise every year)

And don't jump on the CoD bandwagon, yes the same name game comes out every year, but at least the setting/location is different each time.... Unlike a football field/hockey pitch/basketball arena.

@89 Yes it is optional and not game breaking for now, because they only testing the ground. But i bet at some point they gonna make everything in games harder just to force micro transactions. They gonna come out with something like "hey, in new battlefield you can buy new guns for cash, you can of course unlock them in game for free too, but it gonna take you about half year of playing non stop -good luck".

no micro transactions in console gaming are reasonable...PERIOD!!! the only games where they could be justified are mmorpgs and consoles do not support that kind of game, people say oh well it doesn't hinder the game.....and? if people accept it they will continue to add them then they will push their luck further and further and before you know it you'll be charged £5 for a reload then you'll all be asking where it went wrong

There used to be this little thing called 'cheats' that allowed players to give themselves everything they want and play the game how they like. Achievements and leaderboards took that luxury away from us.

Hey, if you want to pay extra and have EA (or any company for that matter) microtransaction your ass six ways to Tuesday, go right ahead; it's your money. But don't start crying when this type of thing becomes an essential part of the game rather than an option (and a poorly thought-out option I might add). Because they'll do it. Just because it's something you don't want to participate in doesn't mean others won't (remembers, as hard as it might be for you to think, you guys AREN'T the only gamers in the world). If they see enough people buying the shortcuts, they'll make it mandatory. I'd not put it past a money hungry corporation like EA. And if you think that's not a possibility, think again. All they want is your money, and if you show how easily you're willing to part with it, they'll take advantage of you and run you into the ground. Don't think that can't happen...

@93 You can do that already, shortcut doc for battlefield 3 allows people to unlock all the guns for micro points. Has it broken the game ? No so your point is invalid, if people wanna buy their unlocks rather than play for them its upto them, it doesn't give them more skill over anyone else. Also in this case its single player so it doesn't affect anyone else at all but still people complain just like the announcement of co op.

If you don't like it don't use it. Its OPTIONAL

Wait so are we seriously having the discussion that people that buy this and need instant gratification are wrong in some way? What about everyone who has ever boosted a multi-player achievement? I'd reckon that 99% of the people on this website have boosted a multi-player achievement or taken a shortcut version of earning an achievement, or an exploit. You put lipstick on a pig and guess what? IT'S STILL A FUCKIN' PIG.

But I digress, my point here is that you cannot say this is wrong because you have to pay for it and then turn around and do something that gives you a shortcut in some manner yourself. I believe that is being a hypocrite, but I mean I suppose most people nowadays are pretty much fueled by hypocrisy for at least a vast majority of there meaningless lives so fuck it!!!!! Rage on and then do essentially the same thing yourself but please! PLEASE! Do me a favor at the end of it.

Come onto the forum and bitch about something that is useless. Check

State that anyone that does it needs instant gratification! I think we're on board.

Turn around and do the exact same thing without paying money but still getting instant gratification! Are we all almost there?

Then take all the household cleans you own, blend them sum bitches up and enjoy you a'll kill ya just right.

And if for any reason you over power the deathmoothie! SHHHHH! This is important! I want you to find the biggest Yellow Jacket nest you possibly can, maybe one in a bail of hay or stuck up in the corner of a barn or where ever those little bastards like to hang out. I don't really know I'm not a beethuasist. But I want you to run straight up to that fucker and pick it up, did I mention also be naked for this part? Anyway pick that bastard up and you just give it a real good shake to let them know their leader has returned. They should all immediately come out and begin to kiss you rapidly and when they latch on that's even better! It means they are giving you the gift of love and have decided you are there mother and or father now. You should immediately open you mouth and eyes and allow them to embrace you inside and out! Don't be scared they just want to give you cuddles from the inside! Those lumps in your throat that isn't nasty hives from toxins but your emotions filling you up to the point of eruption. Embrace it!

All in all what I am really trying to say is, kill yo'self.

"These microtransactions are positioned as time savers and are entirely optional, as Visceral Games has explained."

Infer whatever you want over the course of 100+ comments. The fact is, its not a necessity and likely never will be. This isn't new by any stretch of the imagination. I own NHL 10 (yet another EA published game over 3 years old) and that game had this same type of content for Be-a-player mode. It didn't become a worldwide epidemic then and it won't now. Contrary to popular belief, not everything you fear becomes a trend...

I don't see what the big deal is. Do you people just need something to complain about, and can't find anything else at the moment? Or maybe you're all illiterate and are just smacking your keyboards and auto-correct is turning your slaps into words. It is OPTIONAL. 100% OPTIONAL. If you don't feel you need instant gratification, good for you! You get to save a couple bucks. So why the hell is it a big deal that they're including more in-game options in an attempt to attract more people to buy their game (an EXCELLENT business decision from every angle, absolutely brilliant) if it doesn't affect you in any way? Are you NOT going to buy the game because there are MORE OPTIONS in it? If so, please sell your 360 altogether. There is not a single thing wrong with that they're doing. It could be worse.. Be glad that it is optional and not something you're required to purchase.

@117 and @118 So is this really the part where we say I'm right, you're wrong and you're a moron? So if we are taking this at what it is what you are basically saying is they want to make micro-transactions that aren't necessary to complete the game, in every game right?

So...where is the problem in this? Maybe it's because I am a business major and can understand the BUSINESS side of this. Because especially at @117 the companies main goal is to make money not to appeal to the whiny bitch. So let's just get that one straight out of the gate.

If these micro-transactions are just going to be for adding something to the game or getting something early who really cares? Is it destroying your experience with the game? Fuck no, all it does is give you an excuse to come online and complain whenever something doesn't rub you the right way.

We're not talking about an online pass , season pass, or even on disc dlc we're talking about micro-transactions that were bound to come to consoles eventually you know why numb nuts? Because they are a massive money making machine. Happy Wars is the perfect example of the future of what console gaming will be, and Happy Wars ain't half fuckin' bad.

As long as the inclusion of microtransactions does not impede upon normal game play, I'm fine. Some people just don't want to be bothered with waiting and collecting, etc... so they'll buy their upgrades when they want them. It's when the inclusion of microtransactions, and the greed to try to funnel more people toward using those microtransactions (say, by, making the game incredibly longer w/o the use of those transactions) that the whole thing will backfire on them. As long as they meet the happy balance of difficulty/time sink vs. microtransation it will be ok. Once they PURPOSEFULLY start increasing how long it takes to do certain things w/o buying extra items, it will completely kill the game.

What's the point in having the scavenger bot and resources in the game world if you can bypass it with real world cash?

@121 Some people don't have a lot of time to play the game because they work 40+ hours a week, have a wife, kid(s), friends, etc. and maybe gets two(2) or less hours a week to play video games and doesn't want to spend that time looking for resources. It's unfortunate but developers and publishers need to appeal to the casual crowd too.

Dead Space 1 and 2 both had OPTIONAL armor/weapons you could purchase as DLC to make the game easier. Dead Space 3 gives you the OPTION to purchase materials to upgrade/create your own armor/weapons as you see fit to make the game easier.

This is obviously another scheme from EA to get more of our money by forcing us to buy materials. Just like how they'll force us to play with a terrible co-op AI. Let's not forget how they'll butcher the game with the new systems and changes!

Except none of that actually happened. Optional DLC is optional. Get the fuck over yourselves.

This sounds like a pretty smart move to me. It's optional so people can play how ever they want plus it's extra revenue to the company for the people that want it now. Honestly it doesn't affect game-play for anyone who doesn't want to use it so who cares. Clever business model IMO.

@117 I'M the ignorant, narrow-minded one? Read my comment. No insults and no one-track mind, I'm actually okay with the microtransactions even though I won't be buying them myself. Then there's you, calling me an idiot and a moron and saying my points are ridiculous. But I'm the ignorant one? Saying there should be NO OPTION for microtransactions just because YOU aren't interested in them when you have no idea how the general public outside of this website feels about them. But I'm the narrow-minded one? Lol go grab a dictionary and brush up on your terminology before you decide to pull that shit again. Unlucky for you, I'm actually not an "idiot" or a "moron" but it's pretty blatant that you are.

@118 Same goes for you, dude. I'm stupid? False. You're ASSUMING that the microtransactions are going to be mandatory rather than optional at some point in the future, and that has nothing to do with what I said. I don't care about the future. I'm not here to talk about the future. I'm here to talk about Dead Space 3, and in Dead Space 3 the microtransactions are optional, so I really don't care what they may or may not do in the future. The article and my comment were both about Dead Space 3. Your argument is one for another day, stupid.

Oh I'm sorry, I had a broad insult directed at no one in particular in my comment. I lied. But everything else I said is still true. Both 117 and 118 are using the future to try to validate their insults and arguments when I said nothing about the future. I came here to talk Dead Space 3. I'll worry about the future when it happens and will join a discussion about it then, I'm not gonna sit here and complain about something that is irrelevant right now.

So micro-transactions are going to make hardcore mode easier because people are willing to spend extra money on top... shame.

What if these materials are extremely hard to get the regular way?

I keep picturing something like this: After searching for materials for hours, you head to the workbench to see what you're missing, then a pop-up appears...."Uh oh, Player. It seems you're missing xyz materials. Why not buy them instead of searching fruitlessly for hours?"

Say what you like about it, these micro transactions are good business. It takes basically zero effort on their end to add a few numbers onto a total in a game and all it takes is one (fairly stupid imo) person to do it and it's instant profit.

Yeah it's shoddy but if people didn't buy em they wouldn't have it as an option in the first place.

So who's really at fault here? EA (and many others) for having these transactions in their games... or the consumers for giving them free money and encouraging them to carry on doing it?

Wow, not supprised at all coming from EA.

Who does EA keep finding for these gamer surveys!?!
Who said DeadSpace was "too scary" ?!?
Who said they need instant gratification?!?
Where are these people you find in such large numbers?

I have never met a DS fan who thought the games were "too scary", most wanted MORE scares. I have also never met a DS fan who wanted "instant gratification" ... there are more than a few annoying decisions being made for DS3, and for the future of DeadSpace in general.
