Assassin's Creed III
Original Assassin's Creed Had a "Huge Co-Op Component" That Was Cut

While Assassin's Creed III has its very own co-op Wolfpack multiplayer mode, apparently the first Assassin's Creed was set to feature a fully-fledged and ambitious drop-in/drop-out co-op mode, as Assassin's Creed III Mission Director, Phillipe Bergeron has revealed.

"Before we knew about the Desmond story and Animus link, we had a huge co-op component in there," he said. "But it just became too hard to do: the engine couldn't support it, and then the metaphor we had above it didn't support it. Co-op was one of those big things at the beginning that just didn't make sense in the end."

According to Bergeron, co-op was cut because it simply didn't fit with what the deveoper was looking to achieve: "For us it was really part of the single player experience, to have in-and-out co-op, and in the end we never thought it made sense in the storyline that we had for the Animus," he explained.

"There was no way to reconcile having multiplayer or co-op in an ancestor's memories. Your ancestor lived his life in a certain way, so assuming you had branching storylines, it creates a paradox. It didn't fit."

Of course, Assassin's Creed has ventured into the realms of multiplayer since, with Brotherhood introducing competitive cat and mouse game-types and Assassin's Creed III adding the wave-based co-op Wolfpack. Could Assassin's Creed IV bring proper campaign co-op to the table? Who knows?

Well, in the end it was a great game, so i'm glad they didn't add it. Might've messed it up.

Honestly co-op in the past 3 games would have worked well, I'm glad 1 and 2 were single player only, and I was never a fan of the multiplayer but 3 seems to have made it best they can. Co-op in Brotherhood, Revelations, and 3 (different modes aside from wolfpack) would have been welcomed greatly in my eyes.

I think too many games are trying to add co-op/mp for the sake of it. I LOVE a good sp experience the likes of this/Fallout/Skyrim etc.

I guess this is just a thinly veiled confirmation that AC4 will have a tacked-on Co-op component. We're not stupid, Ubisoft.

They could have done some side stories from the perspective of assassins under Altair or Ezio. It certaily would have been a better fit than versus modes.

Perhaps Ubisoft's thinkers need to take control of the new Tomb Raider and tell them multiplayer just doesn't make sense...

#5 i also agree with you. AC Franchise should been SP at its best instead they added a shitty MP to the last 3 games. If MP then i'd rather played Co-op with a friend then play a MP mode which doesnt even fit in the game at all. It just like we need a live add on so we give them a MP mode that doesnt have shit to do with SP but we can make more sales then. Not everyone is a braindead idiot that buys your shit regardless of what kinda shit you drop Ubisoft! AC3 killed the franchise though. Its like they wanted to make a mix of RDR and AC. Story was awful, ending was awful.

#12 Multiplayer DID make sense, in Brotherhood and Revelations you were playing a Templar Recruit being trained in the Animus and in AC3 the Animus became an entertainment product and that's what you're playing.

Being a sneaky assassin is funny, teaming up with a friend is even more fun.

Only games i can accept not having coop is turnbased rpgs and simulators, everything else could work fine

The concept of co-op in an Assassin's Creed game is a worrying one. Assassin's are supposed to work alone, not to drag along some idiot who doesn't know the game so the first player can get the inevitable achievement for completing everything in co-op.

Co Op didn't fit? You're in a guild of fuckin assassins. ASSASSINS. It makes zero sense that he'd be working alone on every mission lol. Otherwise...why the hell would there be an entire guild of them.

@19 - Gotta agree with you on that one. One of the games is called Brotherhood for God's sale! Doesn't seem like coop would be too much of a stretch. And I'd take a well thought out coop to AC mp component any day.

cool but glad they didnt, the controls were shit in the 1st one. you think your gonna dive into a bale of hey, instead you jump straight ahead as if your gonna land like batman on the ground. but maybe instead have a seperate co op story mode you select from the main menu, thats the only way that would have worked. but this game is in the dark ages now compared to games now

hmm I could see co-op working in a future AC game. Just think how much fun coordinating killing guards would be. AND it would be harder because there would be two Assassins and both of them would have to not be seen by guards for the mission to be a complete success. The AC games are kinda easy and this might add a harder mode for those who play it.Also there would be a lot more strategy in it.

They are probably making this shit up about the Co-Op originally being thought up during the first Assassin's Creed to cover for all the negative criticism they've been getting over the Multiplayer since Brotherhood.

i think the only way a co-op campaign could work is if it was kinda like RE6 where the stories over lap each other at certain points. in other words 2 different stories that periodically join up with each other. there would have to basically be 2 different campaign or 1 main character for each campaign where you would have to play both campaigns to get the full story.
alot of people don't like playing a game more than once but for AC i would play it 2 times if i was getting 2 different story lines.

I always wondered why it said 2 players on the back of my assasins creed 1, even though it only had single player mode. That annoyed me so much thinking that there was a mode in the game I had not found yet.
