Microsoft's Black Tusk Studios Working on Four New IP
Written By
View author's profile

Microsoft’s Black Tusk Studios has four games in development, all based around new IP. That’s according to the LinkedIn profile of Black Tusk’s senior product manager and product planner, Jonathan Brown.

Last year it was revealed that Microsoft Game Studios Vancouver had been renamed Black Tusk Studios, and was working on “the next Halo.” That’s not the next Halo sequel, you understand, but the next game to hit those levels of popularity.

Now, however, it turns out that the studio is working on not just one but four potential new series.

Jonathan Brown has worked at Black Tusk since November 2010, during which time he has been “the primary product manager on four unannounced new IP and have been a key contributor to bringing these IP from the very early concept phase through green light to production. “

It’s a heartening move by Microsoft, which seems to be lining up a substantial amount of new properties for (what we can only presume is) the next-generation. As proper decent exclusives seem to drying up towards the end of this gen, we can’t wait to find out what they are.

4? How the hell is one studio gonna handle 4 next generation IP? Places like Ubisoft Montreal have at max 3 (Assassins Creed, Far Cry and Watch Dogs), I can't see how this is sustainable... unless this studio is the biggest thing since sliced bread.

Doesn't matter, it'll be the same cycle.
- Produce great new IPs and games @ the start of the generation. Drop support immediately if they begin to lose Steam.

- Drop core support altogether and focus your attention on soccer-moms, kids and teens with serious cases of ADHD.

Xbox comes full circle.

Cue the thumbs down, but you all know it's true. 720 will start strong and then have a miserable final few years when they wheel out whatever laggy, buggy and unresponsive iteration of Kinect is next.

And totally forget about the people who actually care about games outside of CoD and Kinect.

Totally agreed. But you'll get thumbed down by the rabid fanboys that inhabit specific platform centric sites such as these.

They're blind to the fact that MS offers them incredibly little. And what they do offer, they offer FAR too much of.

Halo is my favourite series, and has been for a decade. But I haven't touched Halo 4 in a month, I'm burnt out by it. I have no interest in Gears: Judgement; should have ended with #3.

A Forza game every two years isn't necessary (though I must say Horizon was an excellent break from the familiar formula).

And.... That's kind of it, apart from a few XBLA games they don't bother to market.

Xbox 360 has become such a joke in recent years between Avatars, LIVE fees, RROD, Kinect and the meagre few exclusives on offer. What a strong start and what an awful way to finish.

Bring on the thumbs down fanboy bootlickers, you know I speak the truth.

Based on that they said they are working on new IP, these will not be sequels to any existing games, but new intellectual property.

I look forward to new series as I'm really burnt out on sequels (aside from Dead Space 3, excited for release tomorrow). I was a huge Halo fanboy from the launch of Combat Evolved through 3, ODST and Reach not so much, and I'm already bored with 4.

So with the launch of a new console, new IP would be more than welcomed from me.

@ 4

I agree that Live and the new "total entertainment hub" dashboard has really made what I consider to be huge steps backwards in gaming. I like the interface, but it seems as if gaming is not their focus anymore.

This some great news. so long as it's not for kinect. or Fable or Forza or Gears or Halo. i'm good. Microsoft just far to many exclusives slip away. they better not do that shit next gen.

Nice some new IPs, I just hope they aren't Kinect based. They should have grabbed up some of those THQ titles. Saints Row could have been a exclusive again and a great launch title along with Darksiders.

Now I need MS to give gold members a option to opt out of ads, fix analog sticks from ghost walking,

@2 Agree - thumbs up! It seems like the hardcore gamers are more and more being pushed into PC gaming and the XBox is becoming more like the Wii every day. So sad!

So it's somewhat confirmed that one of them is a futuristic FPS. I would hope that the other 3 are a mix of different genres...

If they do 4 FPS's...well...that's just lame.

id like to see abit more RTS on the next gen xbox,,
more games like Tropico and Civilization etc,,
think that would be really cool..
and also some more games like Deus Ex - HR would be brilliant!!
wanna see some games where you have to use your brain abit more and have more in-depth story lines!!
point, shoot, move foward - getting abit tedious now!! lol

At least we know they won't all be FPSes.
Perfect Dark Core was in development(look it up on YouTube) but MS canned it because they thought having one exclusive FPS(Halo) was enough.

lol

@13, 14

Seems like everybody is considering making that jump.

With consoles outdated the instant they hit shelves and every other negative that goes along with owning one(of which there are many), I get really turned off. Two years into a consoles lifespan, you could build a PC that is 4-5X more capable for slightly more money. Add to that, considering that it's an actual PC that can do far more than just play games and Netflix, I don't really get the point of a console anymore.

Steam's Big Picture mode is paving the way for high-end rigs to enter the living room and deliver experiences that would WOW the knickers off people who have been playing only consoles for years.

I envision(but don't necessarily welcome) a future where only smartphones/tablets and gaming PCs reside. Consoles will be phased out after next generation but people will have options for either casual(phones, tablets) gaming or core gaming(PCs).

Problem with making a new console exclusive is its high risk with the recent downfall of thq and quite a few major studios and needed to sell millions of units to break even (look at capcom they wanted 7 million units of re6 sold by now) so ms went the arcade route if we notice they paid for ports of minecraft mark of the ninja and many others as development cost is alot less risky.
Even Sony is feeling this as they canned 14 projects slated for ps3 and next Gen release some where picked up by capcom and going multi platform.

@16 - "slightly more money" ?

No way. I have co-workers that are hardcore PC aneta and they say that a good PC for gaming cost double that of a console. Plus, you constantly have to be updating the parts. My one friend can't even download the Crysis 3 Beta on his PC cause he needs a new graphics card which is around the same price as a console.

IMO, it's not worth it.

Let's say the new consoles cost min. 450 Euro at launch. Splash out an extra 150-200 quid and you'll be able to build a PC that has much better specs than either the PS4 or 720.

You'll be able to buy games much cheaper, witness incredible graphics and not be subject to ridiculous Xbox Live Gold fees et al.

@ 21 - Understood but it would still end up being double/triple the cost of a console. PC games are only $15-20 cheaper and good graphics can be overlooked because gameplay matters more than graphics. But in all honesty, everyone has different opinions so it's all good.

Jesus. Four new IPs?! All under one studio? That's great, but still...how much development will be placed on one game over another? Black Tusk could put so much emphasis on this "next Halo" title and do poorly with their other three IPs. I wonder how many people work at Black Tusk. Hopefully there's more than enough employees available to ensure all of these new IPs are AAA quality.

While you bring up some valid and agreeable points, you are a bit too full of yourself thinking that you are the only person who uses this site, or that uses Microsoft products that is not a brainwashed slave. Many of us see that they are just like Activision and EA milking the cash cows far too frequently.

Personally I consider myself a huge Microsoft fan, but with that said I am really disappointed with the constant rehashes of current IPs, non support and Windows 8/Windows Phone 8 in general. It is time for something fresh, I am just scared that Microsoft will be selling out and making the Nextbox more of a media center and less of a gaming console.

So contrary to your belief we are not all CoD playing zombie clones that love every piece of crap these companies try to shove down our throats.

One piece of good news about 4 new IP's, queue the people coming out saying Xbox is rubbish and PC is better.

Gone were the days where you used to see an article like this and only comment on the article rather than trying to prove your superiority over gaming choice.

OT: While new IP's are great news, us gamers need to pick them up in order to make a franchise out of them. The 360 has exclusives at the beginning of it's life but due to lack of sales they produced no more, hence why we get the same stuff every year which everybody complains about.

Start talking with your wallet

@11 No that is not somewhat confirmed, as it says in the article they are just trying to make a game that has the popularity and success similar to what Halo has, doesn't mean it has to be a similar game.
