Skullgirls Getting Free New Fighter and Stage This Summer

Lab Zero Games, the new developer charged with taking care of Skullgirls, successfully raised over $150,000 in less than 24 hours to fund the game's first DLC character, Squigly (pictured below). That was last week. This week, the Indiegogo campaign fund has more than doubled, and Lab Zero is on the way to funding a second DLC character.

Squigly and a new backdrop called the 'River King Casino' (an early concept sketch of which can be viewed below) with music from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night composer, Michiru Yamane, will be available to download for free this summer, while Skullgirls second DLC character will be Big Band, the first male character who's part man, part saxophone. Yes, he has no arms, but can probably kick out a hell of a tune.

A third character will be considered should the fan funding continue, with fifteen potential characters (a few of which are pictured below) being put forward for fan voting. As well as these second and third DLC characters, a 360 patch is also on the way, but is currently wrapped up in red tape.

Check out all the various images of the Skullgirls DLC below.

150k for one animated character? He probably paid himself $149900, then paid some guy $100 to make the animation.

Its a pretty solid 2D fighter and yes development costs are expensive because you have to pay the people to make everything work then you have to pay publishers to even get your stuff out there and after that you have to pay Microsoft to even get it on the marketplace so 150k yeah thats a reasonable number. You know that GoW or Halo game you love so much try development costs in the millions most game are 10x more expensive to make then any other media.

Yeah, isn't it around $50,000 just to submit a patch (I think Double Fine and/or the Fez developer said that).

If dafties like #3 actually clicked the link instead of trying to be smart they would see theyve actually givin a breakdown of where exactly that 150k would go.

As for the patch #5 its far too big for Microsoft to allow... apparantly theyve got rules on patch sizes. Mike Z did say though we could instead likely get all the patch changes via the free character download instead though that still means it will be a couple of months away

Brain Drain, Taliesi, and Black Dahlia MUST BE MADE! Those character designs are too awesome to go unused. Stanley on the other hand doesn't look like he belongs in a fighting game, though I do like his character design (but not how I love the first 3 I named).

I like how open the devs of Skullgirls were about the budget spending and the overview makes total sense. I appreciate even more the fact that they are giving this character to players without charging them as well as potentially making more. It definitely feels like these guys really love their game and their community.

Brain Drain, Marie, and Black Dahlia are my choices and maybe stanley but he doesn't fit well with the other characters at least in my opinion.

I do enjoy the game and I'm suprised at all the support they're getting. Can't wait to see it at evo!
