Call of Duty: Black Ops II
Black Ops II Adds Microtransactions From Tomorrow
Written By
View author's profile

Activision is bringing microtransactions to Call of Duty: Black Ops II on Xbox 360 from tomorrow.

Described by the publisher as “Micro Items,” the in-game items will offer “either personal customizations or nice little luxuries.”

And following the recent kerfuffle over Dead Space 3‘s microtransactions, Activision is quick to add that they will not “affect gameplay” and are instead “small, specific ways to enhance your online experience.”

Read on for the full descriptions of each of the packs being made available, courtesy of the One of Swords blog.

  • Personalization Packs

Like dress-up for your favorite weapons. Each themed pack contains a unique weapon camo, three targeting reticles (one each for the Reflex, EO Tech, and ACOG sights), and a custom player Calling Card. All that stuff comes as a set for 160 MS Points.

One notable example: the Bacon Personalization Pack (!) wraps your favorite weapon in the most delicious cured meat known to man. I like that Treyarch has a sense of humor.

  • Nuketown 2025

Folks have been asking me about the pre-order bonus map’s wide availability for some time now, so here it is – and it’s free, so all players can enjoy it together.

  • Nuketown Zombies

If you didn’t get Nuketown Zombies as part of the Hardened or Care Package limited editions of the game, now you can get it as a standalone level for 400 MS Points.

  • Extra Slots Pack

This one’s for the players who requested even more loadouts and/or are fans of Theater Mode. You can now get 10 more Create-a-Class slots (giving you 20 total if you’ve gone all the way up to Prestige Master) and significantly expand your media storage, allowing you to archive 20 more emblems, 32 more films and 40 more screenshots for 160 MS Points.

  • Flags of the World Calling Card Packs

These packs include national flag-themed Calling Cards from countries around the world. Packs are divided by geographical region and costs 80 MS Points per region pack.

O how I miss the old days... You'd buy a game, and that would be the end of that. I understand that games are a business, but jesus, must we be nickel and dimed at every turn?! O well, welcome to the future.

So it's official then? Activision finally outsourced their creativity and innovation to EA and this is what was born.

At least they don't give any kind of advantage over a regular user who doesn't want to pay extra.

That's when microtransactions are wrong, when you gain an unfair advantage by buying something (weaponry, equipment, etc.) not originally in the game for everyone else.

This kind of stuff, I have no issues with.

WOW, so the whole mad rush to pre-order for nuketown 2025 was completely pointless. I wish they would just put more hardcore modes in this game then I might be inclined to play it again.

They dont seem too bad to me, cheap little add ons if you like that sort of thing

If they had said "pay 240msp and get a permanent item unlock token" or "160msp to unlock a title of your choice" THEN I would take issue with it

"Damn, this weapon isn't as good as it needs to be. You know what'll make it better: wrap it in bacon!"

SAID NOBODY EVER!

What a stupid thing to charge for! Couldn't think of anything even remotely useful to introduce, so they do that!. What bellends! I'm glad I gave up on Call of Duty 4 titles back, if I'd known the money I did spend on past games was going to be used to fund ideas like this I'd have demanded a refund!

Considering that a previous Call of Duty upset some Muslims by featuring text from the Koran on a picture in the toilet, is it really that wise to add in guns wrapped in the tasty meat that they won't eat?

@#21 - Good point! Could be a reference in there.

@#10 and everyone else saying these things are our choice and not forced upon us - This is the way things are going and it may not be good! It'll be all this free-to-play stuff, but it'll go extreme. Go and buy a disk, get it home.... Can't do anything until I've paid for something else. Even if we go all digital the games companies are just going to find other ways of squeezing a few more pennies out of us! I don't know what's going to happen, but I feel pretty anxious about the way the industry is heading!

I'm fine with all of these, except for charging for the extra Theater and Create-a-Class slots. That shit should be free.

If people want to pay to wrap their gun in bacon though that's cool, but I'd rather stick with my Diamond Camo.

This may be a piece of good news for Zombie fans- if they decide to separately sell each zombie map instead of having to buy a whole DLC for it. (Then again, Activision is pretty keen on how to make money.)

OT this sounds cool and a LOT cheaper than gears weapon packs! This is how microtransactions should b done! Pay attention EA, Epic, Capcom et all

@7 - Oh please. Activision haven't shown any creativity or innovation for years.

Besides that, these aren't actually micro-transactions at all - it's more like small bits of DLC.

I feel the title of this article is misleading and inflammatory.

I kinda like the way they approached the whole 'micro transaction' scene. They didn't go overboard and as far as I can see none of the stuff really gives you the ULTIMATE EDGE in game. Apart from the bacon, that kills Muslims on sight :O

This is so fucking wrong. F2P game? Sure micro-transactions ahoy. A game people payed full price for plus 2000 ms points for the maps and then adding more shit you can't unlock in game but have to buy?

I wish i could say i don't even care at this point but it bugs me greatly. A lot of people will buy these and it will become the norm in the next game. bye bye decent unlockables.

I would say extra custom class slots could affect gameplay slightly. Having even more options to go to in game gives you an advantage over people who still have the basic number of slots. Not huge, I know, but an advantage still.

@49 I can understand how they made your reorder less valuable but they could do what everybody else does and charge five bucks a shot for each separate preorder incentive a month after the game releases. Instead due to people bitching about not having Nuketown they're giving it out for free. Also if you think paying for things that have no impact on gameplay is bad why don't you try to play one of those "free" Korean rpgs. "Free" at least in that you can download the game and make a character and then pay to actually enjoy play the game. Funny how pc gamers didn't bitch about Guild Wars 2 having a paid cosmetic item shop. All console fanboys need to stop bitching about stuff like this and start bitching about stuff like EA giving out paid booster packs for classes that shit ain't fare when rich kids can get everything that you have to work for.

@51 Gw2 didnt launch a marketing campaign which made it sound like if you didnt pre order the game you wouldn't have access to content for the agame ever. ...but then few months down the road offer half of it to season pass holders then a few more months down the line offer it out for free....treyarc and activision have and its a real dick move to anybody who was stuoid enough to ore order the hardened/care package edition (myself included) so whem I look back at the £70 dropped on my hardened what did i get? ......a coin with a code on it, a metal case and a dlc playercard and weapon skin... £30 for in game cosmetics.....im sticking to games like gw2, lotro, uncharted, halo sick to fucking death of activision and ea

Does anyone else see the similarity between the Extra Classes Pack and Bungie Pro. It adds more file share space for a lower cost and even adds create-a-class slots. Will be the only one that I would buy as I don't like skin packs. Although the bacon is tempting.
