Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z Screens Reveal Comic Book Art Style

Tecmo Koei has revealed the first screens from Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z, "a bold new take on the renowned Ninja Gaiden franchise" being developed at Team Ninja in collaboration with former Capcom man Keiji Inafune and his own studio, comcept, and Spark Unlimited, the developer currently finishing up Lost Planet 3.

Featuring a bold comic book art style, Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z is being developed using Unreal Engine 3, and according to Team Ninja studio head Yosuke Hayashi, Yaiba "is not a [Ninja Gaiden] sequel. It is a new experience for gamers. As with any new title, there are many new challenges, from the game design to art style and even development team structure."

It certainly looks to be following in Ninja Gaiden's fine bloody tradition however, splashing buckets of the red stuff all over the place. For the time being Team Ninja and co. are still remaining cagey regading what platforms Ninja Gaiden Z will release on, but Tecmo Koei promises "more information in the coming months". Check out the screenshots below.

I quit supporting Ninja Gaiden games after the 2nd one when Tecmo never paid off the creator all the millions of dollars in overtime they promised him. Now some hack studio is in charge of this franchise (ninja gaiden 3).

@#2 - Except that's not how it happened. Itagaki demanded a bonus on any game he was attached to that he didn't even deserve. He just wanted it because he was a big shot and the previous Tecmo president agreed to it either because they were friends or whatever. Then a new president took over and he was like "why would I give you this money that you don't deserve?"

It wasn't overtime. It was extra money that he demanded that they had no reason to give him. He only sued because the previous president said he'd give him this extra money and the new president was like "that's not how this rolls"

Unless I am remembering something wrong.

As for Ninja Gaiden Z, it's being made by Keiji Inafune. The guy behind most of Mega Man's career before he left and who created Dead Rising. Lots of former Capcom people are making this. It's not just the Team Ninja guys.

@4 I'm not sure that's how it went down at all. It was a wider spread issue affecting a large proportion of the company and as a result hordes of people left. Nevertheless this is certainly an interesting take on the series.

Are they hinting this is a reboot or a standalone ninja gaiden game?

This really reminds me of ninja blade with the zombies and all. The comic book style i'm unsure of. Some games it works others it just seems tacky. Will have to wait for more info.

I am a fan of some good cell shading. Something to keep an eye on, I suppose.

Love the art style, and a big Zombie fan in general. Finger's crossed for an Easy mode otherwise I will more than likely never finish it.

@4 you have no idea what you are talking about. Get your facts straight instead of making up lies.

The art style reminds me of a PS2 game that I played for a bit that tried to have a comic-book feel to it. I think it looks like they spliced NG and Borderlands together. As for Itagaki, I'm pretty sure he left before they even made Ninja Gaiden 2. He founded Valhalla Studios and announced a game called Devil's Third, but I haven't heard anything about him, his studio, or his game in years.

Follow-up: Itagaki left Tecmo after making NG2 but before the game was released. In his resignation letter, he cited that Tecmo hadn't paid the agreed-upon completion bonus for DOA4, and the president of the company had made "unreasonable and disingenuous statements" toward Itagaki. Yoshima Yasuda, president of Tecmo, told Itagaki that if he was "dissatisfied with the decision not to pay the bonuses, either quit the company or sue it."

I'm expecting it to be shit.

Team Ninja Post-Itagaki just doesn't have it. You can defend Team Ninja all you want, but Itagaki made NG what it was and sadly without him, NG hasn't been the same.

NG3 was shit as fuck, SHIT AS FUCK. Even the re-release Razor's Edge can't save it. What about the original loyal fans who bought the vanilla version?

We got a beta game and fuck all. Then you have the nerve to serve this shit twice and parade the NG name for a cheap cash in. Fuck that.

I can't speak for this game, but all I know is that it has the current Team Ninja's part in production of this thing and I'm expecting it to be shit, anything else would be a goddamn miracle. I want to like Team Ninja and hope NG flourishes back on top of the thrown, but they fuck it up so bad I'm just embarrassed to play these newer titles now.
