Darksiders 2
Crytek USA Looking to Obtain Darksiders IP
Written Thursday, March 28, 2013 By Richard Walker

It might not be all over for Vigil Games' Darksiders franchise it seems, as following the formation of Crytek USA, headed up by ex-Vigil Games CEO, David Adams - who also incidentally oversees a studio comprised of a number of ex-Vigil staff - the studio is looking to acquire the rights to the IP from THQ, effectively bringing it back home.

Now CEO at Crytek USA based in Austin, Texas, Adams tweeted, "Going to bid on Darksiders IP. Put 7 years of heart and soul into that franchise, and I think it belongs at home with its creators."

Following up with Destructoid, Crytek USA staffer Ryan Stefanelli doubly confirmed the Darksiders bid, stating “When the Darksiders IP goes up for auction, Crytek will be bidding for it. Not much more to say since the rest is left up to courts and legal shenanigans, but we’re all excited at the prospect.”

Platinum Games might be a bit gutted, as the Bayonetta studio was looking to acquire Darksiders "if it was cheap." However, it'd be nice to see Darksiders' creators retaining the series they put so much time and effort into, despite Crytek as a whole claiming it doesn't fit with the developer's strategy. Whaddaya reckon?

Platinum or the original guys, both work for me. Would be nice if the Vigil guys got it, but it could use some fresh input. Perhaps the Crytek team will assist with that. Either way, I want the series to continue.

Maybe they'll remake it and add in 4 player co-op

While I cheer for Darksiders to end up in a good home, the game, especially the first, perked my interest with a strong story. Crytek's always left me feeling cold with their relatively hollow characters. Hopefully, this will break new ground for them if they do end up with the rights.

Darksiders games look great. I still want to grab Darksiders II. However, Crytek might not be as good as THQ. I understand THQ is a publisher, but still. Or at least 'Was'. Anyway, I'm not at all angry and I have high hopes for the Darksiders trilogy.

@4 They mentioned Darksiders 3 having a four player multiplayer, but obviously the game was still in the planning stages.

This is great news, Darksiders is one of my favourite game series on the console.
I hope Platinum stay away, too. They would probably just release sequels on the joke console that is the Wii U... Again.

Personally I think this would be a perfect fit for Platinum Games, but as long as it stays alive I'm happy.

Haven't played this yet, so I don't know if this is a bad thing, but I would rather have it stay with it's creators. Only reason for a new studio to carry on the title would be if these guys didn't want it anymore. They clearly do.

I'd like to see it stay with its creators, but I'm worried they'll sit on it for too long. On the other hand, Platinum has clearly shown an interest just by saying they want to bid on it. Hopefully that means they'd move forward with it if they pick it up.

As long as the series says alive and we get some more great games I'll be happy.

Crytek are one of the worse developers that could take on the title... If I remember the quote correctly...

'We plan on making all of our future games free to play'

That says enough.

Maybe Darksiders will go the same way as Timesplitters once they acquire it. Put on the shelf while they release more shitty Crysis games.

Whoever gets their hands on it, I hope they do a good job and continue with what was going on in the first and second game. Please don't try to morph it into anything else...

Funnily enough, my copy of Darksiders II arrived in the post this morning. £10 - daylight robbery.

Sorry THQ I didn't support you with a day one purchase, but I had other games/things to attend to. :(

Please buy the rights Crytek, that would make my day, just knowing that the horseman's return would have a glimmer of hope.

One day they may return!

I truly hope Darksiders can remain with the ex-Vigil team that created it, who are now with Crytek. The thought excites me greatly, because I thought Darksiders was absolutely amazing, and I thought they lost nothing at all with the second entry. It's probably one of my favorite franchises right now. I was very discouraged when I heard Darksiders might be disappearing because of THQ's financial troubles, but if the guys at Vigil can get it back... Then we'll finally get to know what happens to the Horsemen next!!!

I hope whoever ends up with the franchise keeps it single-player. Don't want to see dev time wasted on co-op that could have gone into a better single-player campaign.

I haven't played any of the Darksiders games but of everything I've seen makes me think its a solid game series with an interesting premise. There's a lot of games that are getting made with less intrigue than this, so hopefully somebody picks it up.

If the franchise should carry on, then it's only fitting that it should be continued in the hands of its creators. Nothing worse than seeing a franchise get bastardised at the hands of another.

I'm looking at you Gearbox *cough* Colonial Marines *cough*......

@22, everything is wrong with that, free to play should stay away from console's, all it means is that main stream titles are going to dip in quality, and people are going to be over charged for what they buy.

@38

Actually it could tip either way.

I'll try and put a positive spin on it.

At the moment all the companies care about is day one sales, so they dumb down their games to make them appeal to the masses, which means a lot of games don't have much longevity to them, but with a free to play game, you should hopefully be getting a cheaper base copy, and the companies need to add longevity to the game as that is where the majority of the income is going to come from.

@39

and another point to add is that they would have to cater more for the 'hardcore fans' as they're the ones that will stick around longer rather than jumping straight onto the next one.

So yeah it can go either way, while I myself am against Free-to-play, with micro-tranactions running rampant, they may as well go all the way with it, as at the moment wen are paying full retail and getting loaded up with free to play type features, which means it is actually worse now.

Always look at both the positive and negative, and don't just go:

'CHANGE IS THE DEVIL!'

Both Darksiders games were among my favorites of their respective years, and I think it's a great series to have in this age of shooters. Really hope we see it continue. I just really want to play as the other two horsemen!

@40, such as with a certain Dead Space 3 having free to play feature's shoe horned into the game, that actualy changed several aspects of the game so it could be included originally, which is the way EA's going with all its games, which in it's self, thats just shameful and it is worse then the basic free to play.

I know about the good aspects that it could be, but i just don't see it working well, if I buy a game, I want to be able to buy the full thing physicly, I'm old fasioned like that I guess.

Instead of worrying about obtaining the IP, Crytek should be focusing on fixing all of the problems with Crysis 3!! I am trying to enjoy the game but there's just too many problems with it that need attention!

The nice thing is if they buy the IP then they will be a lot more motivated to actually creating a 3rd Darksiders. It would make more sense if the team who made it were making the next one. I'm sure they all had tons of ideas storyline wise.
