Rock Band 3
Rock Band - The Day the Music Died
Written By
View author's profile

It’s the end of an era. After over five years of constant support from Harmonix, and weekly news posts from us, today sees the arrival of the final Rock Band update ever.

“We’ve managed to maintain a consistent release schedule for a staggering 275 consecutive weeks, releasing over 4,000 songs for the Rock Band Platform, but in recent months we’ve scaled production down as we’ve transitioned resources onto other projects,” said Harmonix recently.

“With several new titles in development and developers needed to usher these new games along, April 2nd will be the last weekly DLC release for Rock Band.”

Well, that day is finally upon us and it’s the day the music died. Going out in a blaze of glory, the last Rock Band track to be added to the game’s bulging library is Don McLean’s American Pie.

“Whether you’ve downloaded every single song we’ve ever released,” says Harmonix, “or you’ve just played on disc songs until your neighbors moved away… whether you’re a metal shredder, or a bubblegum pop singer… thank you for being a part of our band.”

A moment’s silence please.

O = support for keyboards

• Don McLean – “American Pie” O

Price: 160 Microsoft Points per song

(Track is an original master recording)

A lot of people here like to hate on Rock Band, especially when it comes to their DLC, but I for one have loved all three of their games, and bought my fair share of DLC over the years.

They made a great game, and did an outstanding job with DLC. The length of time with which they continued to support their game, and the way they set up the Rock Band platform in terms of DLC was incredible.

I look forward to seeing what they have coming next, and I am sad to see the last ever new DLC track for Rock Band.

It's a good song, and though it fits the mood,mI think they should have tried to secure a song that would benefit every pro instrument. Failing that, at least something awesome that people never thought they would see.

It's a terribly sad day to see support end, but I hope the music games haven't gone forever. Hopefully, someone will be brave enough to revitalise it and reach the peak they once held in 2007-2008.

275 consecutive weeks of dlc is amazing.

I had some great times with Rock Band, 4 players all on expert playing Run To The Hills will go down as probably my favourite multiplayer moment, my mate on guitar was standing on top of the sofa during the solo and my mate on drums was hurling abuse about how hard the song was. 5 years on and I still smile thinking about it. Thanks for the memories Rock Band!

Yeah I have had some really good times with rockband. We used to have parties and have band competitions. We also did a lot of karaoke practice with it. This game helped me even learn how to play the guitar, because I bought one of the pro guitars when it was on sale. It's sad to see it go.

I'm sad that more Behemoth was never added to their library. Its a shame that it has to end though.

Will the RBN still be getting new songs or no?

Finally. Now I won't have to wade through this shit everytime I'm looking through new DLC. Truth be told, I like Rock Band just fine. But I've always hated that it buries every other piece of DLC week after week.

Good riddance.

And for crying out loud. This oh-so-somber tone is ridiculous. This isn't the day the music died. It's just the day Rock Band finally died. Which was long overdue. Considering how long ago the genre actually did.

@11 RBN will still be around on the 360 only. They said it takes them very little work where as on the wii and ps3 they had to do a lot more.

So as long as RBN continues to make money I can't see why it won't live on for a while.

It was amazing. They managed to make gratuitous amounts of QUALITY DLC without cutting content from their games or gouging their customers. I've spent over 2 thousand bucks on this game, and it was well worth every penny. I remember first falling in love with this genre of game back when they released Guitar Hero on the PS2. Rock Band will continue in my home for another five and a half years (and more).

I think what hurts the most is that this marks the end of rock and roll music games. Harmonix, I salute you.

As many have said, RBN releases aren't stopping. Also, the blame is on Microsoft, not Harmonix, for having the RBN songs (which, in recent weeks, rarely gets above 5 per week) "bury" the other new releases that are almost never released on a day other than Tuesday.

The daaaay the music died...

This is my 1000th song in my Rock Band library. A fitting song to go out on. 5 years of great music, 281 weeks of consecutive DLC, no one did it better or understood how to do DLC like Harmonix did. I just hope that they focus their efforts on some great new IPs for the next generation of systems.

@22 Fair enough. But I'll note that tuesday has always been the day of the week for new DLC releases. Why they couldn't have moved Rock Band to a day like Thursday, when nothing is released, always baffled me. That way, individual DLC releases wouldn't have been consistently buried right off the bat by the sometimes dozens of Rock Band releases. And yes, there were plenty of weeks where there would be so many new tracks released that they would literally bury everything else released on the same date.

Not hating on Rock Band. Because I played it more than I should have at times. And I've purchased my fair share of extra tracks. Just saying that they should've given the game it's own sub-section exclusively for new track releases. Instead of just throwing them into the mix with everything else.

^ RBN songs go through a pipeline similar to Indie Games, so they show up as soon as they're approved for sale. Until last year, RBN songs could only be bought through the music store or with direct links to them. Microsoft made them visible on the dashboard so they'd show up when searching.

I waited 5 years for "muse" and never got any :(.
To be fair they have release a fair amount of songs I liked and bought. But also 90% of it was stuff that just wasn't for me.

And I too will not be Dissapointed to not see then in recent dlc page anymore. It was really annoying as much as I love rockband there is a lot of other games I like and play too.

25: Did you go to a news site where there was a separate article for every individual piece of DLC released in a week? The DLC announcements weren't bad at all... if you didn't care about them, it's as simple as keep on scrolling. Lots of people still looked forward to the new DLC to be announced every week, and you're basically just being a jerkoff by coming in here and trolling about how you're happy that Rock Band DLC is ending. Lots of people are not happy about it, so quit stirring the shit pot.

OT: I'm a little upset that they didn't even bother to make a pro guitar upgrade for this. They may well never touch this game again, so I don't like the feeling that they got lazy on their LAST piece of DLC. But I'm glad to see this song finally made the cut and I'm downloading it right now.

I downloaded this yesterday. I'm very glad that it's the full 8 minute range version. I'm also glad that the words whiskey and rye didn't get chopped out, unlike another music game I could mention.

Rock Band 3 is the only game this hardware generation that I've played on more than 200 days. I'm sad to see the DLC end (which stuffs our chances of playing Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding, The River, Inna Gadda Da Vida or Octavarium through RB3), but what we've been offered over the years mostly ranged from great to fucking excellent.

so sad to see RB go. it changed how games could be played instead of a standard controller. it was also one of the most expensive games i've ever played ( retail plus DLCS) but it was worth it!!! its also good to see that RBN will stay up for a bit

I always played Guitar Hero, but within the past year and a half I have grown to like Rock Band because of its graphics and the menu setup. I heard a few weeks before the official announcement that Rock Band was going to stop production and shut down and I was very disappointed we didn't even get a Rock Band 4. I decided I wasn't going to have a breakdown like I did when Guitar Hero went out of business. So, in memory of Rock Band here is what (in my point of view) the Rock Band 4 tracklisting would've looked like.

01. Jim Croce - Bad Bad Leroy Brown

The DLC release is dead, but in my heart and in my mind RB will live forever.
This game was the reason I came back to play videogames (the last console I played was Supernintendo, when it was the thing).
Harmonix I salute you! I still have tracks for purchasing in RB, and when I finally get that RB3 Immortal achievement you damn know I dedicate it to you.
Has been a tremendous fun ride, and will continue to be for Satan knows how long. Much love and respect.
