Halo 4 May Get Cosmetic Microtransactions, Says 343 Industries
Written By
View author's profile

343 Industries is considering introducing microtransactions to Halo 4.

That’s according to executive producer Dan Ayoub, who said, "I think Halo certainly has the potential for those kinds of things,"

"We don't have too much to talk about in terms of our plans down that line, but it's certainly something... we've seen the fans of Gears are enjoying, and if it's something we think our community is going to enjoy, it's something we'll seriously talk about.

"Obviously our commitment is always that we're going to make sure there's something for people to do on Halo, whether it's playlists, or new maps or new content, something like that.

"We can't say too much about the specifics we're planning, but what we can say is we don't take that commitment lightly, and people should keep their eyes open for cool stuff."

Before we start burning down 343 Industries’ building it’s worth noting that Gears of War’s microtransactions are cosmetic items that don’t mess with the balance of the game.

The other approach, of offering progress shortcuts like last year's Battlefield 3 DLC, however, is a little less palatable.

Oh wow.. Activision is doing it to CoD, so of course let's bring it to Halo as well, wtf. As if this game isn't CoD enough, no... everything needs to be copied. Fuck you MS & 343 for destroying the Halo series.

Halo 2 and 3 all the way, best games ever.

I have absolutely no problem with cosmetic microtransactions. If people want to pay money for that, fine. When it comes to the point that paying for DLC gives players an advantage, I'm out. This being said, isn't it kind of late in Halo 4's life to be releasing something like this? Clearly more money could have been made if this were released at the height of Halo 4's online population.

I like micro transactions on weapon skins & armor skins. It has nothing to do with balance for the game so why not? Don't like them, don't buy them. I don't understand why people would be against cosmetic upgrades for those of us who like them.

@8 Halo 3 was a tad bit (a lot) overrated, the story literally took levels from the first 2 games and put them in Halo 3. Halo 4 is way better story and multiplayer wise.

@15 I don't think anyone is saying EA created micro transactions. They're saying that EA (a big successful, emulated company) has successfully implemented this strategy, and if they can, others probably can as well. Chill.

There's a difference though, gears of war judgment's micro transactions are way over priced, I don't like seeing camo that cost you $5.That's a bit ridiculous but if you don't want to pay for it, then don't.

I don't see what all the fuss is about. If these are like the micro transactions they had in Gears, then they are just stupid little cosmetic changes you can buy if you wish to. They have no real affect on the game so why do some people act like this is some horrid thing?

The only game I can think of where microtransactions were properly done was Mass effect three, you could get all the stuff anyway, they were only short-cuts.

But I really hate micro-transaction exclusive content, maybe it's because I'm old school and like my content to be awarded to me as a reward.

oh ad dead space three did 'OK with them from what i hear about how they work.

I don't want micro transactions near this franchise, in any form. In gears, they're insanely over priced for bundle packs of them for a simple skin pack. If they went the way of minecraft, 40 odd skins for 160 ms points, then that's a nice price... but we all know that's not what's happening here.

I will never understand why people hate micro-transactions that are simply cosmetic. I understand if they gave you an advantage, or if they allow you to achieve something in game that would normally take time and effort. But weapon skins? Really guys? The people who don't want them don't get effected at all by this. Sheesh.

@39 The problem with your analogy is the fact that snacks do provide temporary hunger relief and that some machines charge less than a buck for some snacks. Whereas cosmetic additions don't benefit you in any way, so it's a pointless addition to this game.

Why would anyone care if they implement this? 1) it wasn't removed from the game to be sold as DLC, its actual post-content, 2) it's only cosmetic, no impact on gameplay, and 3) nobody forces anyone to buy it at gunpoint.

I understand that this is the internet and anything you all disagree with must be lambasted, but come on guys and gals.. if people want to spend their money to set them apart from the majority of other players in an aesthetic manner in-game, then who the hell are we to complain? If a dev wants to get some extra cash to help them and their teams pay the rent, who am I to complain?

I have no issues with these "microtransactions". In my day, we just called it DLC. I pictured "microtransactions" to be things like paying for more ammo in the heat of battle, or being offered a shield or gun upgrade when you are getting pounded.

Micro transactions just for cosmetic changes? Sure why not.
However I just hope they don't go BF3 way because then what little people play H4 will slowly dissipate. I'd prefer that micro transactions didn't exist in games because then most companies push you to buy them but it also opens the opportunity for the company to think "hey we're making money off this, what else can we monetize?" That's when companies start moving into the game changing side, or the evil side, of the micro transaction.

I'd buy cosmetic upgrades in Halo 4,if their price is right.preferably,if they are sold individually so i can pay like 40 points for the 1 gun skni i might like,as opposed to having to buy a whole pack of armor skins i don't for the special weapon bonus for the set and etc. It may be late in the game's life for such a thing but..i still play a good amount of Halo 4,and i'd like to keep having more armor options.

I personally think they should offer skins that you actually can unlock IN the game as rewards for various tasks, instead of wasting their time on stuff that you have to pay for exclusively. Maybe even have skins that you COULD buy instantly(like Gears) or being able to unlock them in the game for doing stuff...if you don't feel like buying them. Just a thought...

Maybe that's what alot of people are complaining about...the fact that many of these bonuses have to cost money so very often. I get it that they're a company who has to make money in order to stay afloat...but it certainly wouldn't hurt if they threw a couple of bones to ALL the fans who made the game what it is every once in a little while...instead of the ones willing to part with alot of their money for overpriced skins(take a look at Minecraft's skin packs for good pricing, seriously).

It also feels better when you use those skins that you've worked for in order to obtain, I'm pretty sure of that. Oh well, rant over. This is just a little of what I think about this whole thing...though I doubt anyone cares.

is it halting development from a(the) game if no then
is it affecting how the game is played in a competitive style by giving advantages if no then
is it cosmetic and just exists for user wants without effecting the other players if yes then do whatcha do just make the skins good.

if you answered reversed of what i have said then stop that now you will only make problems when they are not needed.

I don't know about these "microtransactions" - or all the hate/hype around it. Wouldn't these be the same thing as buying add-ons from the marketplace - but within the game menu?!

Personally... I think ALL the game developers should have these within six months of a game launching. I hate that the ONLY way you can get certain "exclusive" weapons, armor, skins, etc.... is IF you pre-ordered a game, or bought some collector's edition! Maybe some items are only available in certain regions/countries... but if these companies were TRULY greedy, then they could make the exclusive items available long after a game has launched (like 6 months) and then "anyone" who wants to spend the money can get it.

I say, "BRING IT ON!!!" :-)

Depends on the price point of these skins. So long as it's purely for cosmetics then we're fine. Otherwise pay-to-win is annoying in PvP more then anything. When it's a PvE environment it doesn't really matter much to me.

My take on it:

*How much will these visual differences cost?
*Will these be applied to guns or to armor?
*If applied to guns or armor, how visible will it be? (obviously the more visible the better... The current weapon skins are indistinguishable on the battlefield from the defaults).
*How many are we talking?
*Instead of cosmetic differences, can we perhaps buy Armor Effects instead?
*Instead of cosmetic differences, can we get six new Specializations instead?
*Instead of cosmetic differences, can we get a Season 2 of Spartan Ops?
*Can we get cosmetic differences that pertain to EMBLEMS instead? I'd really like to have my Phoenix back, thank you. I've only had it since Halo 2.

If the proper responses are given, I might be in. I do enjoy my "rainbow" set of weapons in Gears of War 3. Though, I never did buy anything else. Why have a cosmetic change if it doesn't stand out and let everyone else know you have it? Might as well not exist otherwise.

It's DLC! Gears 3 Called it DLC and nobody bitched.

Halo 4 and Black Ops 2 called it microtransactions and everyone freaked and it's their fault because they named their DLC microtransaction.

A microtransaction would be spending 400MSP on a Pack of Spartan Points for loadouts. Once you used them you'd never get them back.

Skins will always be there so it's DLC!

Well, if the microtransactions stay in the "cosmetic" department, I really wouldn't care at all. A few bucks here and there to change the skin of your weapon or something, and it doesn't add any bonuses or whatnot; yeah, I wouldn't really care. I may even buy a couple, since I usually have a few random 50~120 points laying around. But if they start including bonuses, or allowing you to buy Spartan Points, that would just be ridiculous. It would transition further into being like CoD, and the differences have already dwindled a bit.

But yeah. Little cosmetic microtransactions... I wouldn't really care at all.

ok so considering the fact that 80% (including me) of people are SR130s and no longer play the game. what about....hmm...i dunno....rasing the Max Rank Cap? i dont want camos, i dont want shortcuts to guns ive already unlocked. i dont want anymore spartan ops (that i HAVE to PAY for). i want a "no credit max" and a higher rank, or possibly a true ranking system. so i can actually play people on MY level. not garbage ass people who people who do nothing but jerkoff to halo.

Gears fans have been enjoying microtransactions? I've never bought any of those overpriced, pointless weapon skins and neither have any of my friends. I save my money for real content, like the extra playable chapters for the Borderlands and Mass Effects series. That's worth my money. Weapons skins aren't.

This only makes me want to trade it in, just like gears judgment, dead space 3. All those unlockables should be earnable via in-game activities. They're really starting to take the piss with this kind of thing. If you have to buy all the content with microtransactions, the game itself should be fucking free.

"our commitment is always that we're going to make sure there's something for people to do on Halo"

Completionists like myself complete the achievements and promptly trade it away. Fans of the series will play it to death no matter what you do. The entire grey area in between is not going to be swayed by purchasing cosmetics on a game they're not interested in playing.

@77 You can earn them via in-game in Dead Space 3. You can spend money to get them faster or earn them via in-game activities.

The Bot DLC and Extra Suits cannot be earned but thats because it's DLC. Although charging for a bot upgrade... now THAT should have been in game.

So basically what they should have done in the first place instead of splintering it's player base with gated map packs.
