We've long made peace with the fact that Star Wars: Battlefront III is unlikely to ever see the light of day, and yet periodically some more gameplay footage seems to emerge from out of the ether, opening up old wounds and reminding us of what might have been. Today is another one of those days.

Apparently this is a so-called "Version Two" of Star Wars: Battlefront III, which is a smaller internal project LucasArts had in the pipeline alongside Star Wars 1313 and Star Wars: First Assault, the latter of which was rumoured to be a digitally downloadable predecessor to Battlefront III.

Sources say that "Version Two" was to be transformed into Star Wars: Battlefront III, since the project had bounced from Free Radical to other studios. LucasArts had planned to take control of the project and make it themselves. Regrettably, it looks like that's not to be. Check out the Battlefront III footage below. It's a bit rough around the edges, but we get the impression it could have been something pretty good.
