Dark Souls Shifts Over 2.3 Million Units Since its 2011 Release
Written By

Dark Souls has reached sales of over 2.3 million since launching back in October 2011. The figures come from a presentation held during a conference in Japan, headed up by From Software's Executive Director, Eiichi Nakajima.

In total, Dark Souls has sold 2,367,000 units since release, with 692,000 of those being the 'Prepare to Die Edition', which bundles the game with the 'Artorias of the Abyss' add-on.

The unit breakdown provided by Gpara and Livedoor who were in attendance at the event [via NeoGAF] can be found is as follows:

“Dark Souls (PS3) 375,000 units in Japan and overseas (PS3, Xbox 360) for a total of 1,300,000 and 1,675,000. Subsequently, 137,000 sold foreign (360, PC PS3, Xbox) to sell a total of 692,000 of the 555,000 units, including the additional content Dark Souls: Artorias of the Abyss edition (PS3, PC) 2,367,000 accumulated.”

Not a bad performance all in all. There'll be more death awaiting when Dark Souls II releases on Xbox 360 in late 2013/early 2014. You can check out the latest trailer below.

Never played it, just havent got round to it yet life keeps getting in the way of my precious gaming time. Is it like Skyrim? or more hack n slash like a Fableish game?

@ #3 It's nothing like either of those games. For a start, it's actually good. It rewards player skill progression and skill. A very rewarding gaming experience that is sorely missing this generation.

I love the way this is considered a major success, while tomb raider sold about 1mil more, and is considered a flop.

Looks like someone knows how to realistic goals.

Freaking amazing game, I really need to get in there and finish it, every-time I play it I get so far in then suddenly get distracted (usually by something shiny), then when I come back I'm confused as hell as to what i am doing and start again, it's a never ending cycle, and I've had it since day one, sold it and purchased the prepare to die version, but am still yet to finish it.

One day.

At it's release I chose Skyrim over it, limited budget and all. Picked it up only a few months back and honestly I think I was mistaken to chose skyrim over it. Not that skyrim is bad, fantastic in fact but Souls for me is a beautiful game!

Now OFF TOPIC here: X360A How do I update my gamercard on this site? I am sitting at over 320k and the site at the top right shows me at 215k while my comments show me at 269k. What gives?

Dark Souls sells 2.3 millions units since 2011, and they're happy about it.

Tomb Raider sells 3.6 million in the FIRST MONTH it is out, and Square Enix declares it a failure.

Some companies need to readjust their expectations.

Tomb Raider cost a lot more money to develop (time it took, production values with art assets, voice acting, cutscenes, focus testing, marketed the hell out of etc) hence why they needed to have it sell at least 5 million for it to be a success. To just pay for all the developers wages for 3-4 years must have been tens of millions.

Dark Souls on the other hand was made on a much lower budget with a much smaller development team and in a shorter time frame. Sure it might not be as flashy looking as Tomb Raider but it just goes to show you don't need a Hollywood type budget to make an amazing gameplay experience. Maybe Square Enix should take a page out of Namco Bandai's development processes instead of throwing around all the money on marketing, cutscenes, motion capture and graphics etc and then moaning afterwards it wasn't a success.

#12 I know exactly what you mean. The one on the top right page and the one left of my comment, #'s are both wrong. I'm currently at 49k. What I was told a few years ago. Your suppose to manually update all your games GS on here.

1. Search any game you played.
2. Under My360achievements, "click here to enable."
3. Select your achievements and press save.

After that, the system will update itself.

@25 There aren't any difficulty settings but the game does scale in NG+ up to 7 times I believe. As others have said, it's hard but once you understand how to play smart it gets quite a bit easier. Or so I thought until I reached the Four Kings on NG+++... Probably the most ridiculously unfair boss battle I have ever played.

@25 There aren't any difficulty settings. You start on "New Game" (NG) which is actually decently hard. When you beat it, you start over with your levels and most of your items carrying over to "New Game +" (NG+), in which the enemies have more health and do more damage. Beat that and you go to NG+2 which is harder, etc, up to NG+7, after which point the difficulty stays the same.

Some people have beaten NG+7 without leveling up, but that doesn't mean the game is easy. It takes a LOT of planning and skill (and deaths), and just the first playthrough is hard enough for a lot of people (Maybe even most people?) to give up. A lot of that, though, is just people not understanding the intricacies of the combat system. Once you understand how it works, you shouldn't be stuck on any one boss for that long. I'd say it's just about perfectly difficult. Not really as hard as most people say, but I still can't just breeze through NG without trying. There will always be a lot of tense moments.

Got bored with this game. Clunky combat coupled with repetitive gameplay.

Die, fight the same goons, Die, fight the same goons. Bosses are the only real change. Also, the game doesn't have a story. No one is giving you missions. You just plod through the thing without direction...

I love RPGs, but this game really turned me off.

@29 The story is present, it just isn't handed to you from the start on a plate. You need to go out and find the answers yourself which was one of the reasons I loved it so much.

I guess the combat varies from each person, I didn't find it clunky at all. The main thing I got from the game was that I'd die and eventually get the enemy patterns and timing in my head just as that enemy type is switched out for a new type, which was a lot.

@18 : Then, it cost too much. They could probably spare a few millions and did pretty much the same game. For example, spare some money without the multiplayer/lots of marketing.

A game like Tomb Raider don't need any marketing aside the web.

I just searched and it said the costs was 100 millions, WTF?!

100 millions is the cost of GTA V, a game that took several years to be developped, which had to pay a lot of royalties because of the music, etc...

That's just crazy.

And by the way, let's say they sold 3.5 millions of copies like they said :

3.5 millions x 50 dollars : 175 millions of dollars :)

Even if you say they only get 30 dollars from each copy :

3.5 millions x 30 = 105 millions :)

So even if it cost 100 millions, which is crazy in my opinion for such a game, they should already got back their money.

God this game was great. For me the worst boss was seath the scaleless, not a hard boss(well as hard as the four kings or smough and ornstein) but trying to get his tail for the tail weapon took ages and pre patch when being cursed was more of a bitch to get rid of he was a pain in the ass!

A truly boring game imo. Very little appeal whatsoever, and #30, that's BS. The "story" is shite, clichéd nonsense.

As for those people patting themselves on the back for getting 1000G and saying how "amazingly hard" DkS is, you guys are either young, dumb or bandwagoning.

The "good old days" had games which consisted of 1 hit deaths, 3 lives & NO continues. Die once and you go back to the start of the level. Die 3 times and you go back to the start of the game. DkS is piss easy in comparison to "the good old days" and the only 2 things that make it "difficult" are not knowing enemy/boss attacks patterns (and counters) and the arthritic combat system.

Easily one of the most overrated games this gen. Dragon's Dogma did so many things better than this and it was actually fun to play. Dark Souls suffers from a chronic lack of style, substance or even purpose. Laboured gameplay, paper-thin "story", almost no music, awkward character interactions/conversations, cheap "difficulty" design and it's all topped off with a butchered co-op mechanic and a random, unrewarding and unavoidable PvP aspect.

I'll be interested to see if they announce anything good with DkS2, other than another "fancy graphics, overly dramatic music" cutscene or trailer.

DkS is the epitome of an anticlimax. So much hype, and it delivers absolutely nothing of the sort.

I probably never will like this series as I really don't like trial and error gameplay all that much (I'm a very frequent quick saver). I like RPGs like Witcher 1/2, Baldur's Gate 1/2, Dragon Age 1, TES, Mass Effect 1, KOTOR 1/2, Fallout(all), etc. For the most part, having a great story and supporting cast of characters is key for me to enjoy an RPG as I look at the experience as me being a part of a book in which I'm the main character. Did I feel that way in the short times I played Demon/Dark Souls? No.

Having said that, I'm glad Dark Souls was successful. The RPG genre is a bit dead on the console side of things, so its nice to see a game come in and do shit a bit differently than what has become the norm (bare bones skill trees).
