The Bureau: XCOM Declassified Confirmed for August Release

2K Games has this morning confirmed that 2K Marin's XCOM shooter is still alive, and has been rebranded as The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, a tactical third-person shooter. The game will release in August, and is set in 1962 at the height of the Cold War. Today's confirmation follows a pair of teaser videos, and even a confirmation of sorts from 2K earlier this week.

The Bureau: XCOM Declassified is an origin story that reveals how the XCOM organisation first came to encounter a mysterious extra terrestrial enemy, having been initially established as America's covert defence against the Soviet Union. You'll play as special agent William Carter, leading a squad of agents in a secret war.

This secret war has high stakes too, as it'll ultimately decide the fate of humanity. It's The Bureau's job to keep the enemy's existence covered up to prevent global panic. Apparently, the game has a "calculated combat design" demanding that players have to think tactically.

As a third-person shooter, The Bureau offers greater spatial awareness, and enables players to move in and out of Carter's 'Battle Focus' ability seamlessly, giving you control over the "tactical shooter action". Like XCOM: Enemy Unknown, The Bureau will also include permanent consequences, which means your decisions will stick and can result in the irreversible deaths of squad members.

“The team has been working hard to leverage core XCOM elements like tactical decision-making and permanent death of squad mates in a purposeful way that makes this a unique tactical shooter,” said 2K Marin's Creative Director, Morgan Gray. “To that end, The Bureau will challenge players unlike any other third-person tactical shooter.”

You can pre-order The Bureau: XCOM Declassified from participating retailers today, and get The Codebreakers side-mission as an added bonus. The game will be out on August 20th in North America and August 23rd internationally. Check out the live-action teaser and first two screenshots below.

Im really excited for this! I didn't mind when it was a first person shooter, Bioshock has taught me there is room for shooters with a brain. I have Enemy Unknown, and have no problem with games spanning multiple genres, as long as the effort is genuine and not just a cash grab.

Cannot wait for this.

As someone who has never played any games in the XCOM series, I truly believe this game may fail. This game has gone through 3 different developers in a span of 7 years and has gone through a serious overhaul of what it once was. From what we have seen from games that have gone through this much reconstruction, they usually tend to be mediocre titles in the end. We saw this with Aliens Colonial Marines and Duke Nukem Forever and they were absolutely poor games on a severe technical level. It's always great to see a game that manages to pull itself out of development hell, but based on the history alone, this may be a bad game. I warn everyone on this board to restrict themselves from buying this at launch unless you know what to expect out of this.

@6

Yeah, but you know who handled BOTH A:CM and DNF?

Gearbox Software!

2K Marin is handling The Bureau! NOT Gearbox Software.

#6: Another example of a game that came out 18 months later than expected after going through several variations - Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. Haven't heard any great things about that game, just decent to straight up abysmal.

@10 Future Soldier wasn't a bad game, it just wasn't a proper Ghost Recon game. Viewed as such I would say it was pretty good. It just doesn't hold a candle to either of the G.R.A.W. titles unfortunately...

OT: I have very high hopes for this game. Fingers crossed it turns out to be worth the wait!

I really like the time Frame and The Art style they have chosen for this game.

Now, if I can shoot aliens with a Thompson Submachine Gun this game will have everything I want from a shooter!

Heres to hoping its a High quality game!

Now we just have to hurry up and wait for August to get here.

i think this game has a lot of promise, and now im getting very interested again. i really liked the very early videos that showed the setting, a lot of this team worked on Bioshock and then were the main developers on Bioshock 2. i think that gives them an advantige over other studios that havnet worked together for so long.
i just want to see the achievement list and a nice chunk of gameplay.
i really wish that we could get some news about the scanners on x360a.org, its been 2 years guys. fuckin hell!!

The two screens look nice but I'm somewhat disappointed that they changed the style up as well as the gameplay.

I still think that this game could fall on its face just as much as it could greatly succeed, so I guess we will wait and see.

Personally, I just want the remake of Enemy Unknown, and the 'XCOM' game released on PC, now THAT was how to reboot a series (even if it was a little short)

Being that tbe developrrs of Bioshock are on this, I might just pass, played tbe first one briefly and thought it was garbage, #2 looked even worse, with added MP (surprise surprise).

If XCOM runs on tbe same engine as Infinite, I might be sold on it, that looks damn good . . .

Still, sort out the XBLA Enemy Unknown and you'll make a lot of older gamers very happy :-D

@18 If you play an a game briefly you haven't played it enough to have that kind of opinion on it. Bioshock is a great game.

I loved Bioshock 2 so I may actually consider this.

I was interested in XCOM when I saw the 2011 E3 trailer. This trailer makes me even more invested. I am looking forward to see what The Bureau is going to be like.
