Ex-THQ Boss Danny Bilson Reveals His New Game Idea With Hellboy Producer

Former THQ boss Danny Bilson has outlined his vision for an ambitious new transmedia project that he's looking to create with business partner and old friend Lloyd Levin, who served as producer on movies like Hellboy, Watchmen and the Tomb Raider series.

Apparently, Bilson is "very close" to announcing a distributor for the project, which according to the exuberant ex-THQ head is inspired by Telltale Games' episodic strategy employed most recently for The Walking Dead, and could take the form of a film as well as a game, like Defiance's launch as both a TV show and game.

"So Lloyd and I got together and we said let's make a micro-budget film series for streaming, because the hardware now enables us to play the game and watch the film on the same device," Bilson explained at the GameHorizon Conference today. "And let's launch let's say three episodes a year - these are two-hour episodes - and in-between - thank you Telltale Games - we will do a narrative of three or four chapters, but we're going to go one step up, we're going to add a bunch of different features and a little bit more interactivity."

The project draws upon Bilson's experience in TV and film as a writer (The Rocketeer), producer and director (The Sentinel, The Flash TV series), and would crossover between the game and film, with the film writers writing the game's narrative, while actor's voices and likenesses would also feature in-game.

"This is where we're going. They're all science fiction fantasy horror stuff that makes good gaming, and we are very close to announcing our distribution partners, and this is where I'm going next."

We're not talking a movie tie-in in the traditional sense however, as Bilson noted: "... the movie game, which thank god is dead because it was a pretty rotten aspect of our art form."

Bilson has had an interesting career in games, with some time at EA as an executive, before being brought in at THQ to help turn things around. You can hear more about Bilson's ideas and his storied career in a video of his GameHorizon speech below.

@2&4 - Maybe you should pay more attention. THQ brought him in to try to help turn things around. Meaning they were already a sinking ship when he was hired. At the point he was brought in, THQ was already finished. You think they could've saved the Titanic by bringing in another captain after they'd already hit the iceberg? Nope.

To his defense, he kept the company going long enough to get several titles out to retail. Not to mention he secured the sales of the major franchises and developers before the company was liquidated as part of the bankruptcy filing.

@5 He started with THQ in 2004. He presided over 8 years of its downfall until Jason Rubin was brought in after the uDraw disaster and years of bad decisions.

Jason Rubin got those titles out the door and secured the sales of those franchises and developers not Danny Bilson!
