Report: Section 8 and Aliens: Colonial Marines Dev TimeGate to Shut

Developer TimeGate is to shut, according to industry sources.

The troubled studio, responsible for Section 8 and Aliens: Colonial Marines, reportedly laid off all of its staff yesterday.

TimeGate has been struggling with financial issues for some time. It went into administration last week, but sources say publisher SouthPeak Interactive subsequently won a legal battle ensuring that the developer went into liquidation.

What does that mean? It’s means TimeGate is no more.

The two companies have been at each others throats over the disputes regarding Section 8 for years. Initially TimeGate sued Southpeak for withholding royalties and failing to produce localised versions of the game. But then SouthPeak countersued, alleging that the developer hadn’t invested as much money in the game as agreed.

Should the reports be correct, it looks like the battles are over. Best of luck to all those looking for new jobs.

And yet Gearbox is still raking in profits. I actually thought the multiplayer was the best part of Colonial Marines -- Gearbox's programming is what made it shit.

It pisses me off that Gearbox got out of this unscathed. They're more to blame than anyone, and it seems they were affected the least.

Section 8 Prejudice was excellent, and I'd have loved to have had another game in the series.

@3 exactly right, it doesnt matter how badly aliens: cm has done, timegate was payed long ago for the work they did there.
@4 those games are excellent. to bad they didnt develop Fear 3. we mightve gotten a good game and they might still be making money.

Never played either game. But with numerous reviews and glitches across the board. I don't think I ever will.

gearbox played more than a small part in this

sega gave them $6m to make A:CM, they spent probably $10,000, then shipped it elsewhere, where they paid timegate fuck all to make the whole game (in a 9 month timeframe)

tbh, anyone who defends gearbox is a fucking clown and everything that is wrong with humanity today....any comments of wait for reviews are void, reviews should be out before a game, to persuade people to buy it....not all media friendly until it comes time to release, then going dark until a month after release where they come out with some random shit like

"the game was started back in 2000, you can't expect it to be up to todays standards"
or, whatever he said for A:CM, I know that is from DNF...they guys at gearbox are fucking arseholes, can't make game worlds for toffee, and are probably found trying to look up schoolgirls skirts

this is the way the industry works, some big company takes the money for a project, pockets it, pays fuck all to some group of scapegoats, blames them for the shoddy work, sits back and laughs at us for buying this shit
but...all most gamers on these sites do is cry about online passes....how about we only bitch about quality of game, dev & publisher

section 8 wasn't a bad game, for a small studio. had potential, but unfortunately was a bit too ambitious, and the usual dodgy storyline, but that is the norm for games these days

Anyone want to weigh in on picking up Section 8 Prejudice? I've been thinking about it got awhile, but I dunno if this news is going to be a death low to the games community.

Bye bye. This game was pure garbage. They might not be totally to blame, but they were part of the shit wreck.

@12: You're an asshole. On topic, though, the Section 8 games were pretty good. Part of that middle-tier that we hardly got this gen.
