Bungie Reveals New Destiny Details

Bungie has updated the Destiny website with a whole slew of story, enemy, location and faction details.

As far as building a universe populated with interesting races and lore is concerned, Bungie looks to be taking the work it did on Halo and dialing things up a notch. This is a universe clearly created to be explored for years.

We’re pretty excited. And while we’d love to know more gameplay details, between the info below and the stuff revealed by Bungie at GDC this year, it looks like Destiny is shaping up to be pretty epic in scope.

You can find all the new details on the game’s website, by clicking through like a million pages. Or, you can see it all below, thanks to the power of copy and paste.

Destiny is out next year and is headed to both current and next-gen platforms.

  • Welcome to the Frontier: Our civilization once spanned the solar system. Its ruins are still out there: buried in the dunes of Mars, hidden in the jungles of Venus, lost in a wild and abandoned Earth. For centuries we've huddled under the safety of the Traveler, protected from our enemies. Now, a new era has begun, and the only hope for our future lies in unlocking the greatest mysteries of our past.
  • The Traveler: Everything changed with the arrival of the Traveler. Long ago, it breathed new life into our system and began our Golden Age. But it did not last. Something hit us. Knocked us down. Tried to stamp us out. No one knows exactly what, but we do know this: very few of us survived, and those who did owe their lives to the Traveler.
  • The City: In our darkest days, Humans, Exos, and Awoken found the Traveler where it made its last stand, low above Earth, silent and immobile. We built this City - our last - within its protective shields, fighting countless wars to keep its peace. From that dark age, the Guardians of the City were born.
  • Guardians: You are a Guardian of the last safe city on Earth, able to wield some of the Traveler's incredible power. You are taking this mantle just as a new day dawns. Titans, Hunters, and Warlocks have finally returned to our long-lost worlds, only to find out we are not alone.
  • Warlocks: Warlocks have long studied the Traveler, mastering some of its arcane energies. Its true purpose still remains a great mystery, but discovering truth has always driven you into the unknown. Now, our enemies are the only thing that stands between you and the lost wonders of our Golden Age.
  • Titan: The first Titans built the Wall, and gave their lives to defend it. Now, you stand in the same high place, steadfast and sure, protecting all who shelter in your shadow. You hail from a long line of heroes, forged from strength and sacrifice. Our enemies may be deadly and merciless, but so are you.
  • Hunter: Hunters once prowled the wilderness and wastelands, taking big risks for even bigger rewards. You're no outlaw-at least, not anymore-but making your own luck has always meant bending the rules. Your unique brand of daring and ingenuity is needed now more than ever.
  • Earth: The wilderness beyond the walls of the City are ruined and corrupted, claimed by nature and our enemies. From the war-torn fortresses of the Twilight Gap to the skyward steppes of Old Russia, evidence of our lost glory still litters the Earth, waiting to be rediscovered.
  • Moon: Early exploration attempts have proven too dangerous. The City has since classified Earth's Moon as a Forbidden Zone.
  • Enemis: Beyond the safety of our Walls, strange and deadly enemies now occupy our old worlds. Every day they grow bolder, probing the Traveler's shields for weaknesses, looking to stamp us out for good.
  • The Fallen: The Fallen are a scourge, tirelessly engaged in war against us and scavenging all that remains. They say their Houses have claimed every planet and moon we ever touched. If you see one in the wild, know there are many more nearby, and don't hesitate to send their souls screaming into the black.
  • The Fallen Dreg: These relentless thieves seem driven by desperation and rage. They are crafty, but they usually give up their cover with their clattering and hissing. Most seem outfitted with some kind of shock dagger and pistol, and as far as we can gather, they seem to only have two arms, while other Fallen have four.
  • The Fallen Vandal: The truths about the Fallen chain-of-command are still making themselves known, but Vandals appear to hold a higher ranking than the Dregs, and deadlier weapons, too. They often have long range capability, but, lucky for us, their weapons take time to charge.
  • The Fallen Captain: Fallen run in packs, led by an individual Captain. There is no denying a Captain's might; they are the fiercest of the Fallen. There is this sense of tattered nobility to them. You can see it in the way they carry themselves. They think they're better than us. They believe that Earth belongs to them.
  • Cabal: It's been years since they first made their presence known at the Twilight Gap. While early reports have them centered on or around Mars, the true might of the Cabal is still wrapped in speculation. Awaiting more reports from the Vanguard.

Sony seemed to be touting some unique content on their platform(s) but I wondered if MS have managed to get (different) exclusive content at the same time.. I guess time will tell!

I'm finding it hard to give a damn about Destiny, especially when they're set on using terms as generic as 'The Traveler', 'The City', 'Walls', 'Golden Age', etc. Nothing about this is grabbing me so far. Not in text form anyway.

They've said they see the "core" game lasting for 10 years with DLC and expansion support, anyone who buys a copy for this gen's consoles shoud be very worried about server shutdown in that time frame.

@16, it's an FPS MMO-RPG.

I'm so pumped for this game! It has a lot of potential, but I'll get it next-gen rather than on release date.

@16 Its actually both. FPS in combat and what you do outside the city and its 3rd person when you are in the city.

@19 Actually according to Bungie it is a shared world shooter. Its FPS first and then a few MMO things in it.

This is just me but with Destiny i lost completly interest in any other FPS Game out there.

It`s the same feeling that i got after seeing Dark Souls, i completly lost interest in any other RPG after playing Dark Souls.

I have big faith in Bungie and in this game, i believe it will be a Top-Quality game with much love and effort in it.

Thanks for the new informations about the game, can`t wait to see some gameplay.

Cheers

@20, yes well "shared world" implies full MMO. Besides, after reading the lengthly article on Destiny in GameInformer's issue last month or so, they heavily hint that it's MMO similar to that of Defiance.

@22 Well, they avoid ''MMO'' because it has become a dirty thing to use. The recent years of MMO's proves that it needs help.

Still on the fence for this one.

I'm not 100% sold on this game. Have not touched MMO's in years because I just don't have enough time to really play them and get everything out that the game has to offer.

Also if this is going to be a 10+ year game, I would be thinking that it would have a subscription or it would be forced DLC to keep up with the time.

Sill need more info for this.
Keen to find out more.

#1 It is mention in news. :)

Look forward this game. I high hope Bungie is not ruins this. I don't think they will not since Bungie bought wonderful original series of Halo from them.

Destiny look awesome in many artworks.

I hope Campaign is not shorter like their Halo games. :)

If it is an MMO (or is handled like one- like Defiance) they may as well only release it in the U.S.
They're the only place with the internet to handle games like that in general.

Not that their internet is particularly good but because the universe has to suffer through their bitching if they're not getting their way.

@25 I cautiously optimistic. Not to big on mmo's just not my thing. I think bungie has made good games in the past but for now i will wait for more info before i make a decision way to early to tell if it will be good or not.

@30 What?

I don't even know what you are trying to say, my internet does OK and I live in the middle of nowhere in the UK.

It all depends on the quality of server your trying to connect with, and it's locality helps, usually with big releases they dot servers all around the world so that everyone can get a good go, but that won't matter if the servers themselves are rubbish, which is why I will never buy an MP focused game on Day one.

So it has been confirmed that this is "open world" or "MMO-esque"?

It's not going to be a largely on rails shooter like Bungie's Halo games?

It's not going to be advertised as one thing then end up like something completely different? (like ID/Bethesda's Rage)

CoOL! I am really interested in this story... for sure not a new story, "been there, done that" comes to mind, but with Bungie's take on this type of story, it could be a winner.

@ 10 ... how are you not banned? lol... it is a true failure of the staff if Astrex's is not P-banned for that absurd comment. This is the type of comment/user that negatively impacts everyone here. Someone willing to type that, even once, does not belong here.

@35, GameInformer's article on the game, as they interview Bungie, say it will be a shared open world experience, and they imply and subtly state it's an MMO.

According to what Activision and Bungie have both said, there will be no subscriptions. So there may be microtransactions or something else to off set the cost of servers and what not.

Hmmm... both platforms... double the achievements?! :-D

Depending on when I pick up the next-gen Xbox, I may end-up with one for each platform. I bought both Xbox versions of "Burnout Revenge," so I'll probably do the same with Destiny (assuming it's good - and I do)!

@46: MMOs are not single player games though and are not billed as such. Gamers know that an MMO requires an always online internet connection.

Sure, you can solo in some MMOs like The Old Republic, WoW, and Guild Wars 2 but that doesn't make it a single player game.

A single player game is not online and does not require an always online connection to play.
