Mass Effect 3
Next Mass Effect Could be a Spin-Off, BioWare Considering Aria, Garrus and Javik

With Commander Shepard's story wrapped up, the edge of the universe is the limit for future chapters in the Mass Effect series, with developer BioWare discussing the possibility of future spin-offs that could put secondary characters, like Garrus, Aria or Javik in the spotlight.

"There's so much that could be told in the Mass Effect universe," said Game Director Casey Hudson. "It'd be cool to do something completely unrelated to the larger storyline, like a story about a private investigator on the Citadel. Or maybe something detailing Garrus' time in C-Sec."

We imagine Shepard's Turian buddy would be a favourite for his own game among Mass Effect fans (we'd certainly play a Garrus game), and Lead Designer Preston Watamaniuk would too it seems. "While being one of Shepard's most loyal friends, Garrus has also had some of the most driven personal goals. He's a hero in his own right, as Archangel and beyond. Who wouldn't want to see the further adventures of the bold, charming Garrus Valkarian?"

Still, Watamaniuk, also believes that "a game centred on brutal Krogan combat with more of a melee focus could be pretty exciting." Wrex, Grunt or a new Krogan character? Who knows?

Lead Writer Mac Walters on the other hand, would like to explore several Mass Effect characters: "Aria. The Illusive Man. Kai Leng. Any henchman. The list goes on. I think most of them could have successful spin-offs of their own in some fashion," he said.

Producer Mike Gamble thinks, Javik, the last Prothean first introduced in the From Ashes DLC would be a good fit for his own spin-off. "Following the story of Javik a little bit more would be pretty cool. As the last remaining member of a lost race, I think that we could tell a lot of stories about his adventures in the Milky Way, and coming to terms with his place in the new Galaxy."

There's a lot of ideas being thrown into the pot there, so conceivably, the next Mass Effect game could be a spin-off starring one of these characters. For now of course, it's pie in the sky, but you can consider our vote cast for a Garrus or Javik Mass Effect. Which Mass Effect character would you like to see explored further in a spin-off game?

Knowing EA, they'll probably demand that Bioware make a spin-off of every character in the franchise, even the star child dude.

I want a Miranda spin-off.

I think it would be cool to base a game off another character just I'm scared that it could make the game(s) alot shorter.

But then again the mass effect universe has some pretty interesting characters so why not :)

I would quite like to see them abandon all of the characters we know and branch out within the same universe, perhaps in a different time period - the first contact wars for example. Having familiar characters, but with no Shepard, will make the whole thing (unfairly no doubt) feel a little sub-standard.

They should so introduce a new protagonist being of the Volus race. They may not look like much but give them a chance. A Hanar main character wouldn't be bad either. ^_^

In my opinion, it is never going to be the same. To be honest, I would like to see what the future would be considering the ending.
i am interested in anything mass effect and lets face it, most of us could spend hours talking about what could be. I guess all i really hope for is no matter what they do (unless its a prequel, spin off ot not) we could see, they changes that the universe had during the trilogy.

@4 Javik boring? He was the most interesting characters in the game.

OT wouldn't mind a spin off game but would rather the next game be a new story with new characters.

I prefer a Mass Effect title that mainly focuses on online multiplayer. We could use a 3rd person Sci-Fi shooter.

Also if they were doing a Javik spin off. A prequel to him would be more intresting then a sequel. Seeing the milkey way in the past would certainly be more intresting.

That is fine to bring spin-off series for ME as long as it is same gameplay and similar story to main series. I am happy to look forward to this. :)

Whatever they do, I hope they don't do a prequel. Nothing says "creatively bankrupt" like a prequel. I'd like to see a game that takes place hundreds of years after the end of ME3; to see how the galaxy recovered from the Reaper invasion would be fascinating.

Doing anything involving any of the characters from the old games would be playing it too safe.

@9 i agree with 4 about javik not bieng interesting & a bit of a dick but i agree that mass effect should give us a new story with new char. but i would insist on cameos. garrus fight along side our squad for a mission or arc but can not join cause he has to finish his fight.

Out of all those, I'd vote of the investigator on the Citadel. I love my ME characters, but not enough to devote an entire game to them. UNLESS the entire game was broken into chapters, each focusing on a specific character at any place in their timeline.

I still want to see what was happening elsewhere during the events of the trilogy and how my actions were effecting others unrelated to my party. What could be heavily horrific and dramatic: what craziness was happening on Earth for the entirety of ME3? You've got "foxhole" missions, evacuations, I'm sure plenty of "touch decision" possibilities (Letting one city die to give another time.), and plenty of indoctrination witch hunts and process center horror!! So if any character should get a spin off, let it be Anderson and/or that english character first introduced in the ME3 Announcement teaser.

I would like a Mass Effect game set in the Protheans last moments. With you being Javik. Playing the game where you lose will be different and interesting. The Protheans knew they lost so tried to do what ever the races of every other cycle did... Contribute to the survival of the next cycle.
I expect a little hate for this but my opinion is my opinion...I wish they'd let us see more of Shepard. I didn't want his story to end.
But then...maybe a mass effect without any of the other characters could be good? Too many people will have many expectations of Bioware when doing the old characters we grew to love.

They should release a game with stories for a bunch of guys at once. Not just a Garrus game or a Kai Leng Game, but rather one with a character select menu in which you play through a unique campaign. That way they could assign Casey Hudson to only ruin one thing at a time, and hopefully other writers won't blow it with some of the minor characters.

I'd definitely play a Garrus game regardless of when its set and a Miranda game during either her Cerberus time or during the events of ME3 and beyond (where she's tracking down and sabotaging Cerberus bases/facilities accross the galaxy etc).

I also wouldn't mind seeing a game focused on Kasumi as she seems to be one of the characters that's not really developed during the games and everything surrounding her is still a mystery.

Another idea for a setting could be the Rachni war and the subsequent fallout (i.e. the Krogan's takeover following the war which prompted the Turian/Salarian alliance formation and creation of the genophage).

As much as i enjoyed many parts of the Me trilogy i have no interest in playing a prequel.

I think the only new Mass Effect game i would play would be one set 50k years in the future as a sequel to the only legitimate ending ME3 had. ;-)

It'd be interesting to see a game where Humans are just a myth at best.

A Garrus game might not be the best idea. He tells us his past throughout the whole series, so playing as him during those past events would seem rather redundant in my opinion. Aria would be a much better option, since she's more mysterious and has a more interesting life. I never played From Ashes so I don't know what kind of character Javik is, but the way you guys describe him, he seems like he has an interesting background.

all of them would be a terrible idea, mass effect is a very character choice driven series so making a game off a character that already has an established personality would be terrible as they would have to completely change the way the game works, i dont mine having a game in Csec when garrus was on the force but we shouldnt be garrus as we need to be someone that is a blank slate to put our on choices and personality into

If it is post 3, it will be interesting to see how it plays out. The difference between the three endings is enough that it would require some effort to make the game with those differences.

It was my understanding (based on Bioware saying it) that they were already at work on the next installment of Mass Effect. So you're telling me at this point they're still trying to decide on a direction for the story? That leaves me with even less hope than I had before. Sounds like the whole affair will be uninspired.

"We know we have to make another installment of the franchise to cash in on it, and since the narrative has always been the most important part of the Mass Effect series, we figured we should have one of them in this game too. We're just throwing sci-fi at the wall over here to see what sticks. Pre-order now."

I agree with #41. If I was playing a game as Aria, I'd be spending the entire game trying to do what I think Aria would do, instead of doing what I want to do. Terrible idea... unless they were talking about books or movies. Then I'd be fine with these spinoffs.

I could spend all day saying what I DONT want in a new Mass Effect game but it wouldnt matter because it seems they are already set on a spin off without Shepard. So considering that as my option what they SHOULD do is go the RE6 route and have multiple campaigns that all intersect. I think a prequel in any way shape or form would just be awful. The only thing a prequel is going to do is fuck up the first 3 Mass Effects we know and love. By having multiple campaigns from the view point of some already established characters they could focus on how those characters are coping with the idea that Commander Shepard no longer exists and that he sacrificed himself for the greater good of the entire universe. I would personally like to see characters like Garrus, Liara, Miranda, Tali, and Wrex. I could give a fuck less about Ashley, Kaiden, Grunt, Jack or any of the other side characters (that are still alive). To me at least they never seemed like they had any real connection to Shepard and did not really develop an identity of their own. Its not like they wouldnt just throw in a bunch of cameos anyway. I also dont give a shit about Aria or any of the other villains. You definitely want characters who had a personal relationship with Shepard and characters that will be able to continue the legacy in his honor without diluting any part of who he was. You have to look at characters that are going to be strong WITHOUT Shepard and AFTER the events of ME3. I think that is the only way a new ME would work and the best way for your decisions in ME 1, 2, and 3 to still mean something in the universe.

They already killed off Thane, who would've been my pick. But how about not taking secondary characters and promoting them. They were support characters for a reason. Now a game with a bunch in one, that lets you play on a bunch of them I could get on board with. The multiplayer has spoiled a lot of us into being able to play with different races and different sets of powers.

Also I'd like a more diverse crew for my ship, I want Hanar, Elcor and Volus crew members. Oh and the most important feature for ME4 make it an RPG again !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think as far as video games go, telling a story beyond Commander Shepard and the Reapers kind of ruins the poignancy of the established universe. I've been playing since the beginning and I think it's a good idea to let Mass Effect go down gracefully. Establish a new IP based heavily on its mechanics, but let this universe go.

I don't know why they can't leave it as is. Mass Effect was a great trilogy, there is no reason to milk it. I won't buy any spinoff games.

What I would buy, is an in-universe trilogy with an all new cast, all new story, and preferably on the next generation of consoles. But please, let the existing characters and story rest, its time.

I would probably end up buying anything ME anyway, but I think I agree with #60. A new cast, story and time period (with maybe 1 or 2 secondary characters from the original trilogy cropping up here and there) would be great.
Also, a story set in the First Contact War, Genophage or the Rachni Wars would be interesting. Maybe, it could be a little like DA:Origins, in a sense that you could play as different races on different sides of the war.

Wrex was my #1 favorite, but then he was effectively removed from ME 2-3 and this is where Garrus shinned. I really think a game situated on the Citadel that is based upon Garrus would be successful. Bioware has some tough choices to make because they can literally do anything with dozens of characters and a whole universe to play with. I dont think they could go wrong unless they introduced a PvP multiplayer, which they probably will, but hopefully that will be a stand alone game so I dont have to buy it.

I love the mass effect universe, so will buy the next one regardless...

But, if it was up to me - I would want new characters. What was special to be about mass effect was the fact that the character became specific to me... Ok it was guided, and probably not that different but it felt like it. The other characters were awesome, but their personalities are set... It seems to reduce spoke for options.

@43 That's really how it seems to be. The suggestion that Javik could even have a story to tell outside of what exists only supports this. I mean, c'mon. They made it pretty clear that Javik intended to take a self-inflicted dirt nap after the war was over. How the fuck could they justify creating (or even suggesting to create) an entire spin-off given that very clear finality?

The more they talk, the less this seems like a good idea. I personally was under the impression that they were going a completely new route. Not this side-character spin-off bullshit they're tossing around now.

Yawn. Come back when you've come up with some original ideas, Bioware. Oh, wait... Drew Karpyshn (aka the only writer that had original ideas) already quit? Nevermind.

Am I the only one who would like a stealth based Kasumi game?

To be honest I would like to see them have multiplayer with a battlefield and planetside 2 aspect to it. As in keep the Mass Effect universe, mechanics and gameplay but add in large scale battles, high player count, and maybe vehicles? Having it resemble the cutscenes during the last mission in ME3. But still being 3rd person which would make Mass Effect stand out. Of course still have the long, narrative, epic singleplayer Mass Effect is known for. But like #43 said it kind of worries me that they don't even know what to do yet, since I thought they said they were already working on it. I REALLY hope this isn't just a shameless spinoff cash-in, rather them having the chance of expanding on the Mass Effect universe and creating a original, immersive experience (Especially with Next-Gen around the corner).

Welp, the guy who wrote the good stuff, namely Drew Karpyshyn, has left the company.
The new guy? He wrote Mass Effect 3's ending.

Oh yeah, give me more of that, please! 8D

I've always maintained that any game beyone ME3 is a fucking terrible idea. Look at the trainwreck of GOW:Judgment. The story is over, no matter what they do, the story is OVER! We know what happens. For the love of God BioWare, try something different.

@52 what moronic comments about having Hanar, Elcor and Volus crewmates. I couldn't tell if you were being serious or sarcastic. If serious then you're a complete numbskull. What value would a jellyfish, a hulking nothing and a fat, out-of-breatch Volus provide to a crew? Nothing, that's what.

@47 (and the list continues for stupid comments). Depending on how you played the first game Ashley and Kaiden were love interests. So please tell me how there was no "real" connection to Shepard? They were integral to the first part of the story and then came back to join Shepard in the final instalment, after being brutally beaten and having constant visits to the hospital. But no no, you're right, what deep connection was there?

Casey Hudson's a hack.

@43 - They didn't even have an ending for the third game written until EA told them to get their arses in gear and release the game, as they'd already had one massive extension. I'm loathe to defend EA, but they had a point there.

@ #65 & #70

Mass Effect is all about the story. It almost seems like they're leaking information about the direction they want to take the next game so they can see how the internet responds and then do whatever pisses off the least amount of people. My feeling is this: If they don't know what the game should be about at whatever stage it's at right now, even if it's very early, there's no reason I should even care. It doesn't help that so many top people that made this franchise what is was have left Bioware.

I hope I'm wrong and I'm just speculating obviously. I just don't want to sit back and watch as they butcher a great series. At the very least I'd rather see them shelf Mass Effect for awhile and work on a new RPG. We know they're capable of making great games, come back to Mass Effect down the road when there is something worth making a game about, other than money through sub-par sequels.

I want a game set after ME3 but not too long after, maybe a decade or so, a century at most. You make all these choices during the series and I wanna see how they pan out. I know that the ending would be hard to deal with and (I'm guessing) it would be on next gen so you might not have the ability to transfer your saves but I think it would make for a great story. As for character, I'd choose something like dragon age 1, a choice between the different races each with a different story, just my thoughts though!

Who the hell even gives a shit about this series anymore? I love how BioWare has kept this shit on the back-burner to wait out all of the horrible press they got for even thinking ME3 was a good idea, let alone a good game. Probably the best bit of planning that company has seen since the first game got released!

Sometimes its best to leave a story alone. Let it have ended and thats it, thats the end. When you start spinning off and prequel stories you began to milk and destroy the franchise. True we would love to see certain events unfold but leave it to the imagination of the person reading, watching or playing your product. Keeps the franchise interesting.

No Bioware.

As this is the end of Shepard, I personally feel it should be the end of his crew also. And I would go as far to say I believe a majority of the fans feel the same way.

I don't mind if I hear about them, or even see them as a cameo of some sort in the next game, but I want the next game to be completely fresh. A new threat, and a new party of combatants.

If you REALLY wanted to do the side story thing with the existing characters, you should have done it along side the previous 3 games, as a minor DLC or something. Like Lelianna's (sp?) Song from Dragon Age: Origins.

Don't waste talent and resources on something like this, please. Not only for the reasons above, but because it does smell of milk...

Please don't Bioware.

IF they're going to do a spin off I really want it to be with Garrus...or make it with whoever got stranded on the other side of the relay.

but in a perfect world I'd rather it be an entirely new universe/set of characters. Perhaps in a different time period like other people have said.

if they are going to go this direction, id like something like a mass effect origins type of thing where it has several stories involving several already established characters. there are certain things that i would like to see in that regard be it video game or animated movie form. there is PLENTY of established lore to work with and quite a few stories id like to experience that as of now we have only heard a fraction about.

there is two things that i personally think would make the next mass effect game good:

1. have a new character, and he/she meets garrus, javik, aria, etc.
2. have the game with a couple people to choose from and play their story from before/after the events of the mass effect games.

Personally Javik would be fascinating. Start the game back before he went into stasis and continue it past ME3.

Although Kasumi would be neat to. The Citadel DLC saw us doing a bit more of the stealthy approach not just going in guns blazing. Perhaps something along those lines.

A game that proceeds after ME3 would be better,I want to know what happened. The ending didn't explain anything at all....

There could be another war amoungst species, taking advantage of weakened states.

I think it would be cool to be a C-SEC officer who joins with your own "personal" Shep. Then the game could allow you to play as both with alternating storylines until both meet up to fight by eachother's sides. Or, perhaps, Bioware should consider setting the game around one of underworld people like Aria T'Loak and her business after the takeover of Omega.

A Mass Effect game about:

Garrus = Awesome
Krogan = Awesome
Zaeed (Spelling?) = Awesome
Kasumi = Awesome

... I'm noticing a trend

How about a Mass Effect game with 2-3 spinoffs of our favorite characters. To me it seems difficult to make a full length game on a single spinoff. So why not have multiple? Then again, after recalling DA2, hopefully EA doesn't get fully involved in another Bioware game.

Maybe a story on Jack's great great great great great grand child who saves the universe, paired up with Liara's great great great great great grand child too. Add all classes of species and let Cerebus go bankrupt & shut down.

The Prothean Idea would be cool... or perhaps introduce a further-away universe discovering the ME universe & threatening it again(& much more powerful than the Reapers.. lol..)

Am I really in the minority in liking the nerdy Mordin?

Batarians & Vorcha were no-ones.. maybe there can bea back story of how they were powerful before they became somewhat irrelevant to the whole of the ME universe.

Or you could even let us create our OWN character of any race/gender. We could be thrust into accepting a leadership role. Having to prove, in our own way, that we are capable and driven to achieve some goal. Having to persuade other ME characters to follow you. Such characters would be reluctant to follow anyone else as most people would likely fail to live up to the standards set by Shephard. Would make for good conflict, drama, and tension.

The problem is that if they did give us the ability to create a character of any race/gender that there would be a distinct lack of voice acting.

I would like a game that introduces several characters with an arching storyline that intersects at some point (set before the events of ME3). Playing as a Quarian on their pilgrimage, Kai Leng (or Thane) on a mission to assassinate someone, a detective c-sec officer, a Krogan on a search for a genophage cure, and a volus trying to make it into the shadow broking industry who's story's eventually intertwine.
Well that's what I think would be cool anyway!

I'd like a game centered on Javik, but I'd like it to be a prequel. As in, his time before going into his extended sleep thing. It would be interesting to see everything happen from the perspective of the Prothean Empire, and their struggle against what we know as a fight they can't win.
