Defiance DLC Outlined: "We'll be a Party in Your Mouth Before You Know it," Says Exec Producer

Trion Worlds has revealed details of its downloadable content plans for Defiance.

The open-world, multiplayer shooter will receive a total of five DLC packs over the next year, consisting of both paid and free content, as well as store updates and new achievements.

Writing on the game’s official community site, Defiance executive producer Nathan Richardsson said, "The free part is for everyone. We want people to be playing with their friends; we don't like to isolate players.

"That doesn't mean there won't be exclusive content in the DLCs, quite the contrary. The difference is that you can usually bring your friends with you. The catch is that they can't directly benefit from all of it, like DLC specific loot or gain abilities."

Richardsson’s post is littered with half-apologies for the buggy state of the game, something he promises to address with upcoming updates.

“What’s stated by players and critics alike, whether they love or hate us,” he said, “is that we’re taking known concepts and doing something new, we’re fun, and we have potential.

“That’s not an excuse for not being perfect, but I’m certainly not going to complain about trying something new, fun and having potential.”

“We’ve been likened to a good B-movie, being about as deep as a bag of chips but great fun. As having issues, but always dragging you right back in for more…” continued Richardsson.

“I have no problems with these, because we knew Defiance would be polarizing. We aren’t part of any mold, but we can always do better.

“Personally, I’d like to get to the two-bag of chip depth category or at least, add some salsas for various textures. We’ll be a party in your mouth before you know it. Your favorite B-movie.”

To this end Richardsson pointed to the update coming later this month, which hopes to offer a load of fixes and improvements while introducing elements that cross over with Defiance’s tie-in SyFy TV show - “one of which will utilize a new open world game mode called Sieges.”

"Details are obviously slim,” said Richardsson, “but it’s a crossover event so that should give you an indication of what this game mode entails in future DLCs.”

You can find the full list of Defiance’s “tentative” first DLC pack plans below.

You get this when you buy the DLC for $10:

  • Access to play the Castithan Species

Now, could be different full retail, but I played the beta for this game and was far from impressed. Hopefully there's constant patching what needs to be etc, but it felt a bit under-done.

But, as I say, retail could be entirely different to the beta.

I like there marketing as far as additional content goes considering how rough a launch they had on PC there actually supporting there audience better then most developers these days.

By the prices in the online store this DLC will probably cost 4000MSP. One vehicle alone is 960 bits which equates exactly to 960MSP.

They are doing a great job of fixing bugs and helping individuals with these, and I know it is free to play. But the prices for stuff in the store is insane. You can't buy the exact ammount of bits you want. So you could end up spending 1200 MSP just to buy an outfit, not including the helmet. It is just silly. Especially when an outfit may be more physical money than the DLC.

Anyway not decided if it is worth my money to buy any of it. Seeing as alot of it is free anyway.

It's better fixing, fixing and fixes lots and lots bugs before DLCs. So then DLCs not getting bugs again like Main game. Seem good idea DLCs wait next year make sense. :)

@9: Paying for achievements? You're paying for the content, which includes the achievements. This is absolutely nothing new, almost every game does it this way and it's rare to see free achievements come from a paid DLC. Your complaining makes no sense, and so does the way you randomly tie achievements to microtransactions.

@9: It has nothing to do with paying for achievements, it has to do with people not expecting to get everything handed to them for free.

You and this damn entitlement generation expect to get everything handed to you for free, and you expect it to he handed to you yesterday.

Fortunately, this is not how the real world works(yet).

Welshdragon please would you grow up and stop whining! They are offering free DLC, that is great. If you don't want to pay for the other DLC then don't pay for it, it's really not that hard to figure out.

Stop living in the past and move on. I'm not happy MMO's have Achievements now and don't see a point in them having any as there are feats you can do in game for people to recognize you with. However, I've accepted this fact and It's the new age of gaming.

Only thing we can do is move forward.

@15: Well you should try to avoid making such absurd generalisations. Trying to associate "achievements being part of a paid DLC component" and "microtransactions" makes no sense whatsover. It isn't part of the "evolving" you speak of, it's always been that way and frankly it makes perfect sense. The achievements are simply part of the paid package.

I don't know if you realize this, but making money is the biggest factor to anything now a days.

It's the double edges sword of the industry; consumers are more stingy on what they buy, while developers (a lot) are not willing to go the extra distance to make a AAA new ip because of rising costs. Honestly, I don't blame them. If you fail hard once, your company can easily go up in smoke. It sucks, but it's the way the industry has evolved.

OT: I'm happy about the amount of content being added. Probably the most cost worthy slice of DLC in any game for a while.

I tell you what though, there is little to no reason to roll a second character. Kinda breaks my heart I won't be able to play as a Castithan :(

Well, maybe for season 2 I will roll a new character if I get all the achievements

Hmm, post was blank when I submitted.

Lee, will Freight Yard be coming back ;-) haha.

@15 there ain't too many games with free DLC that have achievements. You need to pay for most.

It will be interesting to see what the price of individual DLC is. The season pass is 3200 msp for those that didn't pick it up with the ultimate edition.

Just need Trion to put a date on it.

I've really enjoyed this game and can't say i've come across any glitches that are game breakers, also the developer seems to fix know problems unlike others (EA i'm looking your way here). The more they add to the game the better it gets. Multiplayer seems a bit too much rinse and repeat (but don't they all) Shadow Wars is also very frustrating when you do finally get in, but this is more down to experience than the game play and I'm improving all the time. One gripe is the lack of ability to gain bits in the game as opposed to using MS points, I'm currently on 60,000+ script and no means to actually spend it, I've got top rate guns I'm happy with and fully modded...hopefully newer additions will be worth getting or I can happily retire to Antartica.

Why would you want achievements without playing the game? That makes no sense to me at all.

Also dude, you do seem pretty entitled, and spoilt like that one dude said, sorry.

oh boo hop being welsh sucks, make more money perhaps if you cannot afford it?

Welsh, It's really simple.Achievements are a really strong marketing tool. While many games give free achievements, most will have them in paid DLC. Given the fact that games are still $60, with no adjustment for inflation over the years, means developers needed new ways to offset higher operating costs.

Paid DLC and achievements are synonymous really.

@20 I read somewhere, cant remember where that the 'store' paid customisation pack in dlc may allow you to change class too. Not 100% sure though.

@23 they announced on their forums that Freight Yard would be back in update 1.020, hopefully Permanently now though.

@29 I really dont know what your issue is with the fact there are no achievements with the 'FREE' dlc, the fact they are giving a section of dlc free that they could've held back and charged for every aspect of it would make most happy but from your comments you arent much of a fab of the game anyway so I dont understand why youre letting it bother you.

@20 the way the store works I will be shocked if racial change isn't something that can be easily bought.

on the subject of race I am disappointed that albino human is the new "alien" I was hoping for the Wookie dudes like Torc or whatever the heck Varus is

And by "a party in your mouth", I bet he means how hard they throat fucked us with the defiance store prices. $10 an outfit? Screw you. If you had charged beta prices we would of just bought more stuff in general and you'd of made the same or if not more money Trion, Instead of this highway robbery blatent money grab. Bastards.
