Report: Xbox 360 Dashboard Update Coming in August
Written By
View author's profile

Microsoft is preparing to launch a dashboard update for Xbox 360 this summer, according to reports.

Apparently, the update will go into public beta in late June or early July, with the changes designed in preparation for the arrival of the next Xbox.

The tweaks being issues for the dashboard don’t sound too exciting just yet, as the report details just smaller Live Tiles and the ability to swap between darker or lighter themes.

By the sounds of it the most interesting changes will go on behind the scenes, as Microsoft works to ensure that users across both the current and next-gen Xbox consoles will be able to communicate using messages, beacons and the like.

The previously rumoured phasing out of Microsoft Points will also kick in with the update, which all being well will launch this August.

Queue the “smaller tiles means more ads” comments.

For me, the only thing the dashboard should have is speed. Unfortunately, that's a problem. It simply takes too long to start up, go to the system settings or even use this "quick launch" feature on the xbox guide which is everything but quick.

The smaller tiles meshes with the Windows 8.1 update. I'm glad they've changed their minds about treating my 60-inch TV like a cell phone. :)

I just want it to be easier to find the things I am interested in. 1 thing I wish they would change is the marketplace. I liked the old feature that showed everything that was new at once not just all the new stuff from a particular set (videos, or games, or XBLA). I haven't downloaded a single video since the latest update. Before this it was 4-5 per week. Too annoying switching between all the tabs.

Anyway, the MSP phasing out is still just a rumor. Personally, I could care less.

@5

Here here, my Xbox is shockingly slow on the dashboard.

I switch it on and it takes about two minutes to sign in and let me freely select things (without it freezing and lagging all over the place).

If I try and move about to much to fast it starts freezing, even skimming through my friend list makes it lag.

And when ever I switch it off, it takes about another two minutes to actually switch off, which may not be an issue for many, but I switch mine off at the plug to save some money, and i don't like switching it off directly from the plug as it damages the hard drive.

Gold subscribers should not get adds at all on the dashboard, i have never hated any of the past dashboards however i still think the original blades was best and they should have just improved that.

May 21st will be make or break for the next console, if it does not surpass (or even match) what features the PS4 is getting then i will simply jump ship BACK to sony (i used to play PS1/2)

It seems you are on the same train as me.

But I'll also be taking exclusive IPs into account, and unless M$ announce some fresh ones Sony will be getting a customer back, in me.

I'm sorry, but I'm confused, I think I'm missing something here.

I read the Verge article you provided a link for. I didn't see it say anywhere in that article that this is update is for the 360 dashboard. Nor did it mention this update is doing away with MSP.

Like @1 said, I also don't really care about new layouts or updates of the dashboard anymore. Since I want a console that the games are the main focus of such, and since I'm not liking the way Microsoft is going (with all the media and other crap instead of games), I'm done with future Microsoft consoles.
I will keep playing my 360 until the new PlayStation comes out.

I'm a proud gamer and as such, this is my opinion regarding any console or brand. So I don't care if anyone thumb me down. This is my opinion and I bet some other gamers think the same way.

@12 you sir (along with 24.99million other people) have clearly never read the xbl terms and conditions

i draw your attention to section 6 of http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/legal/LiveTOU

"When you obtain Points, you have obtained a limited license to a digital product. Points have no monetary value. You may not exchange Points for cash or money, regardless of how you acquired those Points. Points are not your personal property. Your only recourse for using Points is to obtain the specific online Services or digital products that we offer for Points redemption. Points are sold in a few denominations only. Unused Points are not refundable. We may further restrict our Points redemption offers based on your country of residence. We encourage you to redeem your Points. Points redemption offers may be limited in time and scope. The scope, variety, and type of online Services and digital products offered can change at any time. We have no obligation to continue making offers available for Points redemption."

basically means your points have no value, if you don't spend them it's your own fault

@20 "You may not exchange Points for cash or money, regardless of how you acquired those Points. Points are not your personal property. Your only recourse for using Points is to obtain the specific online Services or digital products that we offer for Points redemption."

The keyword there is EXCHANGE. That means you can't exchange points for cash. If MS were to switch its monetary system they would have to "transfer" peoples points into the new currency. I'm pretty sure that would be fraud if they told people who recently bought MSP that they are cancelled because we've switched systems. They can put a use by a certain date on them.

And I thought the end of MSP was a rumour? Now all of a sudden it's gospel? I haven't seen any notification from Microsoft about it either.

so no more MSoft points for real? So then no more Xbox Live rewards, no more Bing Rewards, what about all that? What about the points already on my account(s)?... I hope this is isn't true. I prefer buying the MSoft points cards from stores, or winning them from XBL and Bing Rewards. I will not put a card on my account. Also, I agree very much with some of the above comments. If the new update does anything, it needs to make the Xbox much faster. It's so slow. Seriously takes like 5 minutes to turn on, like 2-3 to sign in, another minute to load the dashboard, and even then a lot of the tiles on the dash, don't even load properly, the my pins and quick menu's are sooooo slow, and after all that, when I want to turn the Xbox off, it seriously takes another 5 minutes to cut off.

@31 Stop and take a breath for a second and don't start always assuming the worst. Doing away with MSP does NOT mean you will have to use your credit card. You will still be able to go down to your store and buy pre-paid cards, it will just be a gift card now instead of a MSP card. This shouldn't change MS rewards or Bing rewards. Instead of giving you MSP they will just give you the new currency or in Bings case, a gift card for $5 instead of it being 400pts.

hmm afaik its called xbox home, and no longer dashboard, since last years update, since they implemented the windows 8 look and the never ending ads.
and since then i refused to spend a single cent for avatar items, themes or gamer pics. and i suggest to spend all the MS points left before they get useless. i heard MS will call the next xbox: adbox infinte ;)

I am actually not a fan of losing points. My account was hacked a year or two ago and they took me for everything I was worth; the debit and credit cards I had on file were all drained. Microsoft did eventually refund what was taken, but in the meantime, life was not so simple.

I don't know exactly how it happened, but I do know this: Had I not been required to keep a card on file, someone would have logged onto my account and found a big fat nothing.

Bottom line, I do not trust Microsoft with my financial information anymore. My preferred method was to go to Amazon, buy a points card through them, redeem it on Xbox.com directly to my account. Simple. Now they're going with a direct credit or debit option, which, as far as I'm concerned, is not an option, or to go to a physical store and get one of these gift cards; not an appealing idea. If I want an arcade game, I like having to go no further than my computer to get the points I need for it. I guess now I'll have to schlep my ass to a Rite Aid or CVS and buy one of these stupid cards, because I'm just not giving MS any more of my financial information. I can't afford to trust them again.

I personally don't care whether they get rid of Microsoft Points or not. Either way works for me. The only concern I can see myself having is if they get rid of the Microsoft Points, I'd want my monetary value to equal what the points value is. As I understand it, 400 Microsoft Points equals $5. I'd want $5 for every 400 Points transfered.

@38 They are NOT forcing anyone to use credit cards. You will still be able to buy pre-paid cards from Amazon for use on LIVE. They will instead be like gift cards now.

Also, I had my account hacked 2 years ago. I didn't give out my info to anyone and it wasn't MS fault that it got hacked, they did replace my points that were stolen though. What I did was use the same password for everything, this site, other sites, Amazon, Xbox.com. etc. What happened is they got my info from one of those weaker sites and tried it on Xbox.com and it worked. I'm willing to bet that's how they got your stuff too.

@ 14 if it takes anyone 2 minutes to sign into the dash, something is definitley wrong. I have only 13 gigs left on my 320 gig and it takes me less than 5 seconds to load the dash.

Back on topic.. Everything MS does from this moment untill the end of E3 is going to leave a lasting impression with fans. If they focus too much on the media and too little on their game, not only will there be a shitstorm of backlash greater than what we are seeing with these rumors now, people might be "Jumping Out" in droves unless they give us something that proves to us that paying for gold is worth it.

I really am skeptical about the PS4 though when I consider how much of a shitstain the PS3 always has been in comparison to the 360.. slower download speeds and installations, no voice messaging, no custom soundtracks in every game, no unified UI, having demos for EVERY GAME, lag and latency problems in nearly every multiplat on PS3 I ever rented, etc.

MS has to really screw up to get me to jump ship.

I don't get why MS doesn't implement a set-up option what apps etc, to boot when you start your XBOX (think: MSconfig under Win Xp). That way most users could customize the 360 dashboard to their needs, and make their systems faster

(First thing I would turn off on boot-up are all the video- and music apps... and IE...and the bing-search at the first page...and the beacon-shit it never used. Just...keep the 360 a GAMING CONSOLE!)

Hey. Mr. Bradley

I just wanted to let you guys know you linked the wrong Verge article. The one you linked as the source is actually for Windows 8 update titled Blue and its new features. It has nothing to do with Xbox or the Dashboard update other than its a Microsoft product.

http://www.theverge.com/2013/5/17/4340490/xbox-dashboard-update-beta-ui-changes-for-next-gen

That however, is the correct article.

You guys that are complaining about slow sign in and load up of the dashboard, you do know its way faster to click the middle button, sign in, and press y, right? I've never used that stupid beginning sign in feature. For those of you who say that your xbox takes forever to shut off, did you know that its a feature to save or finish downloading games without using a lot of energy? Before the updates, you could toggle this option in the system setup options. I think it still works, but i turned it on so i dont have to wait for my downloads and cloud storage to sync.

I have found that they have hidden away many of the items in the dashboard that have to do with core gaming. I am hoping that they will make those items more readily available.

BING Rewards has already been doing the gift card thing as the reward for WP8. Instead of 100 points it's $1.25 added to your account.

they need to make the marketplace more streaming, I haven't dled a video from the marketplace, not since ign, gametrailers, and youtube apps have come out, whats the point in waiting for a 2 min video to dl when I can just go to an app and stream it instantly, added speed to dashboard loading would only increase the effectiveness

I think it would be nice to be able to disable tabs in settings like bing, tv & movies, music, and apps to make it faster.

@78: Or the ability to customize our dashboard the way we want it to be. That would be nice. Would like the ability to add patches to the HDD and not cache for a lot of my games.

@#'s 22,23,24:

Apperantly you guys only read what you wanted to read of #20's post, just the first paragraph.. It's not realy up to interpretiation either... Well a judge may have to interpret...if you'd like... Thats what UELA's or T's and C's mean. You agreed to their terms..

Here's the 2nd paragraph again...

"Unused Points are not refundable. We may further restrict our Points redemption offers based on your country of residence. We encourage you to redeem your Points. Points redemption offers may be limited in time and scope. The scope, variety, and type of online Services and digital products offered can change at any time. We have no obligation to continue making offers available for Points redemption."

This basically means they can take your points whenever they hell they want...
I too highly encourage you to redeem your points before the switch...

@15 Most Xbox users are gold subscribers.... its not 2006 anymore.

Adverts don't bug me, I only have an Xbox to play games, Using it as a media centre for me isn't what I had in mind when I purchased it, I have a TV for watching things, Laptop to surf the web and Stereo/iPod/Mobile phone for music..
so if the new dashboard has more adverts than the current, it wouldn't bother me unless it was crammed with spam like a cheap website.

Doesn't the fact that beacons will be shared between both types of xbox mean there will be backwards compatibility.

@80 I understand what the paragraphs say, and no matter how much you hate and fear MS as this big evil greedy company, they can't just change their currency at any time and cancel your money. You're basically saying/interpreting MS can change their currency at any time, and no matter how much money you have on their network, it's simply gone whenever they change currencies.

Again the KEYWORD is REFUNDABLE, meaning you can't get your MSP points refunded to you in cash. You're assuming that means if they get rid of MS points, you lose your points you've already purchased and there's nothing you can do about. NO WHERE does it say that, or that MS won't/can't convert your points to the new currency, just that you can't get it refunded for cash or exchanged for cash. If you really think MS will just steal peoples cash like that, then you're being blinded by fear and hate.

@80 I left out a couple words from the last sentence of the 1st paragraph. It should read "You're basically saying/interpreting MS can change their currency at any time, "multiple times", and no matter how much money you have on their network, it's simply gone whenever they change currencies".

@86, I don't think they wouldn't convert our points, but if they wanted to, all they would have to do is leave them on our accounts. The last sentence of what that other guy quoted.. "We have no obligation to continue making offers available for Points redemption."

We keep our points, just nothing for us to buy ;)

It would of course be highly stupid of them.

Metro dashboard is garbage and become worse at any update, smaller tiles could mean smaller ads AND MORE ads in the same page.

Why don't we return to NXE or blades? Those were real good dashboards...

@88 Nothing will change other then what it says on front of the pre-paid cards, it will be real world currency on the front instead of the MSP amount. It will be just like Sonys PSN pre-paid cards. You will still be able to go to any game store or where ever you buy your MPS, and get a pre-paid card. This does NOT mean you will need a credit card or anything like that.

@89 "We have no obligation to continue making offers available for Points redemption."

To me, that means they can discontinue the LIVE service and the content on it at anytime they choose. (At some point they will stop supporting the 360 like they did the Xbox, but that's a long time away.) I'm very sure that doesn't cover them replacing one currency with another, and when they do that means your points left points are immediately cancelled. People aren't asking for a refund or exchange, MS are the ones doing it. Anyone saying MS will cancel your points doesn't have clue about it, and pointing to some paragraph that says MS won't refund or can cancel your points at any time is playing on their and your fear. They see MS as this giant evil corporation, and they will rob and steal from you at will.

Plus, how are people in the dashboard beta supposed to purchase content if MS doesn't convert points into the new currency? It can't be a credit card only beta, as not everyone uses or has a credit card, and a lot who do are reluctant to use it. Bottom line when you think about it they have to convert the points until they get the infrastructure up and pre-paid cards distributed to all the 100,000+ stores that sell them.

They need an option to trim the profile down. Mine's about 40MB. What is in there that causes it to be that bloated? What's I'd like most though is the option to hide some of those panels. The Xbox music store is the last place I'd buy music from. And Vudu stomps their video marketplace into the ground.

SMALLER tiles?

Please no. Not everyone plays these things on 90-inch televisions. Some of us wear glasses already, are comfortably at the age where we have to sometimes squint a bit to read small print, and play on normal sized screens....smaller tiles would be a nightmare.

people that are having problems with their xbox 360's saying its being slow and blaming it on the dashboard which it isn't its the xbox itself mine runs fine loads up pretty quick and signs in straight away. I've had my xbox since 2010 when the slim version came out so you mustn't of looked after your xbox properly either that or you got too much crap on your system suggest deleting some of it and maybe deleting the cache every now and again aswell helps improve the speed on your xbox.
