Xbox One Q&A Addresses Top Questions, Plus MS Attempts to Clarify the Used Games Issue
Written By
View author's profile

First things first. According to this Microsoft Q&A, Xbox One "does not have to be always connected, but does require a connection to the Internet". Confused? Apparently, that means that you don't have to keep your Xbox One connected at all times, but it will need to be connected at some point in order to access various updates via the cloud. The cloud is where it's at now, thanks to Xbox One's 300,000 servers.

As for the used games issue, the lowdown seems to be this: you buy a game disc, you install the game to Xbox One's hard drive and it's attached to your profile. If you want to play a game at a friend's house, you can play it on your profile. If you loan a game to someone else, they'll have to pay to play the game on their profile. The same will seemingly apply to pre-owned games.

What exactly this required fee will be is still under wraps, but the way trade-ins work looks like it may change somewhat. "We will have a system where you can take that digital content and trade a previously played game at a retail store," Microsoft's Phil Harrison told Eurogamer. "We're not announcing the details of that today, but we will have announced in due course."

Lee's feverishly transcribing his interview with Xbox UK's PR people as we speak, so hopefully more answers should be on the way soon. In the meantime, here's Microsoft's official Q&A that looks to answer the top questions regarding Xbox One.

Q:    Does Xbox One require an “always on” Internet connection?
A:    No, it does not have to be always connected, but Xbox One does require a connection to the Internet. We’re designing Xbox One to be your all-in-one entertainment system that is connected to the cloud and always ready. We are also designing it so you can play games and watch Blu-ray movies and live TV if you lose your connection.

Q:    How do consumers benefit by being connected to the cloud?
A:    The cloud makes every experience better and more accessible.  Because Xbox One is powered by the cloud:

  • Your games have more power available to create new gameplay, persistent worlds, and deeper experiences.
  • Your system and games can update automatically, so you shouldn’t have to wait for downloads or updates.
  • Your games and entertainment are stored and saved in the cloud, so you can access them anytime, from any Xbox One.*
  • Start a game, movie, or TV show on one console and finish exactly where you left off on another.
  • You can play multiplayer games with your friends, stream movies or TV shows right away, and enjoy the community and social features of Xbox Live.
  • Xbox One can recognize you, log you in and tailor your home screen just for you.

You can discover what your friends are playing, watching and listening to if they choose to share.
These are just a few examples of how customers benefit from our platform being connected to the Internet. It brings the future of TV and games to our consumers—and it’s designed for today and the decade ahead.

* Subject to content geographical restrictions.

Q:    When will Xbox One launch and in what markets?
A:    Xbox One will launch in markets around the world later this year. We’ll have more to share later.

Q:    Can I use my current gamertag on Xbox One and will my Gamerscore and Achievements transfer?
A:    Yes. Your current Xbox Live Gamertag will stay with you on Xbox One if you choose to keep it, and your hard-earned Gamerscore and Achievements will indeed carry over from Xbox 360.

Q:    Will Xbox One be backward compatible with my existing games?
A:    Xbox One hardware is not compatible with Xbox 360 games. We designed Xbox One to play an entirely new generation of games—games that are architected to take full advantage of state-of-the-art processors and the infinite power of the cloud. We care very much about the investment you have made in Xbox 360 and will continue to support it with a pipeline of new games and new apps well into the future.

Q:    Will Xbox One allow players to trade in, purchase and play pre-owned games?
A:    We are designing Xbox One to enable customers to trade in and resell games. We’ll have more details to share later.

Q:    Will my current Xbox Live Gold membership work with Xbox One or will I have to buy a new one?
A:    You do not need to buy a new Xbox Live Gold membership. Your current membership will work on both Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

Q:   Why require Kinect with every Xbox One?
A:    The all new Kinect is now an essential and integrated part of the platform.  By having it as a consistent part of every Xbox One, game and entertainment creators can build experiences that assume the availability of voice, gesture and natural sensing, leading to unrivaled ease of use, premium experiences and interactivity for you.

Q:    Do I need to have a specific cable or satellite TV provider to watch live TV on Xbox?
A:    Our goal is to enable live TV through Xbox One in every way that it is delivered throughout the world, whether that’s television service providers, over the air or over the Internet, or HDMI-in via a set top box (as is the case with many providers in the US). The delivery of TV is complex and we are working through the many technologies and policies around the world to make live TV available where Xbox One is available.

Q:    Xbox One is a more powerful product compared to Xbox 360, but does it also use more power?
A:    No. By providing multiple power states in Xbox One, we’ve balanced energy efficiency with functionality. We’ve taken a completely different approach to how Xbox One consumes power. It only uses the power it needs at that particular moment for the task at hand.

The whole deal with thier used games idea is horrible. I know some people prefer to wait a few weeks for a price drop in games or buy them used to save money, now they have to pay a fee which costs the same as a new game ? No wonder EA got rid of online passes.

Mandatory install and used-game fee might result in your game functioning as a sort of GonDemand if you don't care for the physical disc. Buy new, install, return the disk for half price. Next buyer purchases for price if new game - MS fee - a few bucks. I can actually see retailers starting to rake in more money off used game sales than before. And publishers finally get a share from the used market via fee. Win-win for the whole industry.
Also, now we understand EA's removal of online pass.

The only thing I really dislike is the used games fee. I can no longer lend a game to a friend without them having to pay a fee. :/ I guess as long as that fee goes to developers,I'm kind of okay with it

@5, MS says to continue support for X360, and EA is the first to confirm game support for X360 until at least 2017. Also, with Live moving completely to the cloud, there is a large possibility (hopefully) that there will be no more server closures.

my question is, if for example i buy a lego game which me and my girlfirend enjoy playing, will she have to pay a fee playing it on the same xbox but a different gamertag? if this is the case i see xbox losing money over this, why should we have to pay out twice to play one game.

I'm not too bothered about the backwards compatibility... Once all those shiny new games are out I'll probably forget about the old ones. Only game this concerns me about is GTA. If I buy that in september and then an XBox one by xmas it'll be useless :(
Also, I was pissed off at first about the pre-owned 'fee' but really, when I think about it, I cannot remmeber the last time I bought a pre-owned game. Games seem to drop in price so quickly these days, wait a month or 2 and you find sub £25 offers. To me that's cheap enough.

Backwards compatability is not an issue IMO... it has never been an industry standard & I have never expected it in my 30+ years of gaming.

I can still keep my 360 & games library for those 'classics' that I love,
along with my original Xbox, Dreamcast, Gamecube, Saturn & PS2

It is a shame that the current XBLA library is not transferrable though.
Still, things get better & old stuff gets left behind with technological advancement.

People who are bashing it and threatening to move to PS4 are morons. The used game fee may be small and will go to developers, PS4 will have the same fee. Also does anyone really believe that PS4 will have free online anymore?

Overall, the One is not for me.

It's a great piece of technology, but I don't watch TV, I don't want to pay for services to stream films. I don't have Blu Ray dvds. Using internet is far more practical and easier on a laptop with a keyboard and real mouse, which I already own. I don't have a skype account (nor want one). I'm generally not interested in what is 'trending', I watch/listen to what I want, not follow what others are. I'm not interested in anything Kinect has to offer.

No matter what games are revealled at E3, it won't make the One worth buying in my case. The Witcher 3 is the only game I have a crushing desire to play, and that's available on PS4 in any case. If I do buy another console, it'll likely be a PS4, as Sony have realised that a Playstation is for playing games as a primary function.

not to spread any fanboy shit, i've had an xbox 360 for a while now and yesterday it was so badly done, it was like they didn't listen, that q and a didn't resolve anything, he was quick to dash from the most important questions and it still indicated that there would be fees involved. i think it is bad when:

your stock and drops an hour after reveal, and gamestop's does a little later on

you console is not designed for high end graphics, but is made for performance (the ps3 was made for performance over 5 years ago, they have got theirs out the way)

teasing the 15 (supposedly) exclusive games with cgi'd faux gameplay videos

and all in one entertainment = more expensive

So no more lending games, well yeah its possible but you have to pay for it.... So no more second hand games because you cant find certain games in the store after a while... Oh no sorry its possible, but you have to pay extra.

Microsoft is good with words, like politicians.

No, your console doesnt have to be online all the time, but you need a connection or you cant install your game and thus not play it.

I understand why they didnt mention this and try to be as vague about it as they can.

To be honest as soon as i saw it was a bluray player i knew backwards compatibility was dead in the water. Ive spent goodness knows how much over the years on DLC and games on Xbox live but i suppose you gotta move with the times - PS4 and Xbox1 are both leaving behind the old generation of games.

No backwards isnt a big deal for me. The fact that they are continuing to support the 360 means it wont be an obsolete console for some time.

Its simple really, just dont get rid of your 360 if you want to play 360 games. I still have a gameboy pocket... i didnt get rid of it simply because i was buying a 3DS

@19 have an article up where they say -

"The kicker here is that if you want to play that game disc on your friend's Xbox One, a fee will be required. That fee will cost you the same price of the game itself. "Think of it like a new game," says Phil Harrison (oF Microsoft)

To be honest new game prices differ here in the UK (anywhere from £29.99 to £49.99) and I'm guessing that the publishers will be the ones setting the price right? What's worse is I have 3 Xbox 360's in my house at the moment and lets say I buy 3 Xbox One's to replace our 360's I essentially will be paying for a game three times so my brothers can play it in the same house.

Maybe I'm bitching too much but Microsoft seem to be seeing the $/£ signs but don't quite grasp the frustration this will cause casual/family gamers who will most probably blow up their call centres and online help centres with questions on why their kids can't play their games on their own Xbox's. (I saw first hand in the Xbox Ambassador chat help thingy how infuriated parents where when they didn't know the family Xbox Live Gold was stopping)

@#17 here here

Kinect - not bothered about it - looks nice but...
TV stuff - not sure people in UK with their SKY+ boxes would want one or spend the time on the phone to sky to cancel their account.
Skype - never bothered with it - don't want to

I have only ever used iplayer on 360 once for James May man lab

I switch on my 360 to PLAY GAMES..........

Here's another question:

If we have to install every single game the hard drive will be full very soon. Imagine a 30-50gb bluray disc... You can't have installed more that 10-15 games at the same time...

And if you want to play an old game you'll have to delete one game in order to play another... Or maybe you can use an external HDD

only thing that concerns me is the linked to profiles
what happens if one one of my brother wants to play one of my games on his profile, atm we have 3 gold subscriptions that £120 a year if we have to pay microsoft even more money just to play a game i already own they can fuck off, seriously why should i have to pay £50 for a game then an extra say £20 for 2 licences for something i already own, it should be linked to the console before your profile like current arcade games

Guys, for those of you who aren't worried about this internet connection thing, let me ask you...
What happens in 10 years or so when Microsoft inevitably shuts down XBL for these consoles, just like they did with the original Xbox? Will our console just become a cool looking brick?
You won't be able to play games because you cannot connect to Xbox Live? All because they shut it down to save money?

And this used game thing. Not only is this hurting gamestop, but it allows Microsoft and the publishers themselves handle the prices of brand new games and the fees for used games. This is a VERY bad thing.
This is NOT steam or some game store. We're not going to get amazing deals. This lets them sell games with no competitive retailers, which obviously means they have no reason to go down in price.

Last part is just a theory, but it is something I think is a very real possibility now. Sony has a very large advantage if they don't do this. And this could be a game changer in the console wars.

@34 I almost forgot about that. And that is bad if they do the same thing they did with the Xbox 360, where you can only use official microsoft hard drives. Blu ray disc installs with fill this hard drive up very quick, especially someone like me who will buy EVERY good game. I have somewhere in the range of 200-250 Xbox 360 games. If I had to install every one, I'd probably need a 1-2TB harddrive.
And that would be expensive if we're forced to only buy microsoft harddrives.

@32 Exactly the same as you. Never gonna use the TV bit as I have Sky+. Never using Skype as, I don't like it. The Kinect DOES seem interesting though, seems a lot better.

The extra charge for letting your friends borrow a game doesn't bother me THAT much, I never really lend out a game to friends anyway, any game I play they already have or aren't interested in, they don't ask to borrow any of mine.

I'm glad about the gamerscore, gamertag and achievements will carry over, as well as our Xbox Live subscription.

@31, thanks man. I very rarely buy new games, pretty much never now, but still I hope that's not right. MS has already been quick to point out that what Phil Harrison said about the Xbox One having to connect to the internet once a day is just a scenario so im hoping that this is the same too. Im not as anti-Xbox One as a lot of people here but im still throwing caution to the wind until more concrete details are out on both this and the PS4.

@34 and 37:, I think they will think of that, maybe put more memory for Cloud use or something, I don't buy every game that's out, just 2 or 3 during the year then 4 at Christmas as a present, so I myself only buy maybe 3 games a year, 500GB is more than enough for me. But like you said, if you buy them all, I think they will need to release "updates" with more wireless memory for people in a couple of years.

@36 You're right on the money with the first part of your comment.

Phil Harrison (from Microsoft) has confirmed that the XBox One MUST CONNECT TO THE INTERNET EVERY 24 HOURS, if you still can't connect to their servers after 24 hours for whatever reason, you WILL NOT be able to continue playing games.

So what happens when they inevitably shut down their 300,000 servers in 6-10 years to make way for their new console.

Your XBox One will no longer be able to connect to their servers, which means it will cease to work, all the games you bought will be absolutely useless and you might as well toss the whole lot in a bin.

We can't lend games anymore ? We'll just lend the console directly.

It would be sad if you couldn't re-download xbox live arcade games onto your xbox 1 console that you bought on 360.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who called it on the article about EA saying they're getting rid of the online pass business. It was obvious they knew something, and it has been proven with this new info.

And I bet they're rubbing their hands, because this one off fee to play a used/borrowed game will cost more than an online pass ever did.

I'm not really one to buy used games, but I feel sorry for those who rely a bit on the used market to fill their gaming needs.

@26 : Most people don't care about 360 games compatibility but do about XBLA ones.

Once the 360 live servers will be closed and once your 360 will be dead, you'll lose all the games you bought as you'll lose the licences of them.

The retail games aren't a problem, you just have to buy a new 360 and play your games on it.

If you only bought a few games, well that's not a big deal. For people who bought more than a hundred of them, it's a big problem and I can understand why they don't want to support Microsoft anymore (but the PSN have the same problem, PS3 downloaded content won't be compatible with the PS4).

The second hand games market means the software devs loose money from no sales, why would anybody spends millions on pounds and endless hours developing a game so you can play it free. I think you'll find alot of the making people pay a fee has been pushed by the devs themselves.

my issues lie with kinect as needed. My room I game in isn't big enough for current kinect (maybe 1.50-2 meters space at the max)Does this mean im gimped out of the features and the use from the console as the space isn't there?

Have yet to see that come up and its one that I'm sure effects many more than just myself.

So much company PR bull crap in those answers I almost missed the obvious answering a question without answering it trick. You can play games on other consoles on your own profile. In other words no you can't lend games unless we pay etc...That's a massive fu to a huge amount of gamers not just people who buy used games.

right used games - how much today is an online pass to play a second hand games
1200M$ - 2400M$ ish

You all know the disc will not need to be in tray to play as its on the profile yadadada.

You install the disc - will there be a throw away code to enter OR unique code per individual disc?? Will game shops take back unwanted games / gifts - the code may or may not have been used - NO refunds on new games?
How much would we get for a trade in game? I know if a game is £40 on release i could take it the week after and get a good £25-30+ depending on what game it is.
How much is this "second hand code" price going to be?

These are the kind of questions that need for me at least.

Same. No interest at all in the Xbox one; I'm either going to go for the PS4 or jump ship altogether to PC. That won't be for a few years either, seeing as I'm perfectly happy with my 360 and I'm still living on a student loan :/
Backwards compatibility is VERY important. What do you intend to do when you want to play an older game, but suddenly your 360's f***ed? Sure, 'buy another one', but seeing as companies, this includes Sony, eventually cease to make old consoles, you're essentially going to have a load of games that you can't use; unless you're doing some kind of Shaun of the Dead thing by throwing them at zombies :l

Backwards compatibility is an issue for me. Mainly for the xbla titles. I've got near enough 300 arcade games. I wanna know what's gonna happen to all those xbla games that are currently available on the marketplace. Are they just not gonna be available for Xbox one or are we expected to pay for them again?

@57, that's what I was thinking, assuming that I get a ONE and keep my 360, if I bring my profile to the ONE to play new games chances are it will get a few updates. I don't see how I could go back to my 360 with all my newly updated profile. It seems I'd have to be damn sure I'd never want to play 360 again before I'd transfer my profile!

I've another question which probably won't be answered until it's too late, but, do you remember those games which were removed from the XBox Marketplace at all because of licenses and what not? (I remember at least Marvel Ultimate Allianche which I own the first one but completelly missed MUA2 and there's no way for me to play that with all the DLC at this point, and I think Too Human is another recent case), what will happend with those kind of games which I could buy second hand (phisically) but there's no way to buy them through XBox Marketplace so I can't pay the fee to play a used game? I guess they either will chance the laws to forbit removing games from the marketplace event if there's some license Issues, or those games will be completelly useless if it comes to this kind of issues

At this point, I'm concerned that the devs pushed for the 'used games fee' themselves...

If EA abandoned the online passes because they knew this would make them more money, it doesn't make sense to me that the PS4 won't have a similar feature. Otherwise EA is leaving tons of money lying on the table that they could potentially pull in from PS4 users.

If anything, I need more information on the PS4 at this point. It's possible that their 'reveal' left so much unanswered just so that MS (or someone else, I suppose) could deal with the fallout first. I hope this isn't the case, but it's really the only way the EA thing makes sense to me.

I'm really not angry at MS for them trying to broaden their consumers by making the XBOX One a "all-in-one multimedia-device".
Everything has more options these days, regardless if you use them or not, (smart)phones, cars with more and more computer-assistance etc. etc.
They just try make the machine interesting to a lot of different people, not only Core-gamers but the average Joe as well (the average NFL-Fan for example).
And I also don't think the games will suffer bc of this, I mean, Epic, EA, Bethesda, Capcom STILL stay game developers, they won't start to create TV-content...

But I am still on the fence about the whole Cloud-thing, I want my saves ON THE MACHINE I play on, not saved somewhere in the net.

Also, why no BC? Every BluRay drive can read DVDs, so the format can't be the excuse! Different architecture? Just build-in a emulation, how hard can that be?
But no, the true reason the XBOX One isn't backwards comp., is because it brings ZERO DOLLARS for MS. They don't financially gain anything by doing that, they might even lose money by doing so: I bet there are already plans to release "XBox360 Classics" in slightly updated form on the XBox One marketplace!!

If Kinect is forced down our throats and required to do simple tasks and play simple games that would've otherwise worked fine with a controller I definitely won't bother. That's why my Wii is collecting dust. I'm an old school gamer and I have no interest in motion control garbage. I used to like arcade shooters, but the NES Zapper STILL trumps any of the current tech for gun games.

while I am pissed about no backwards compatability there is still 1 thing I want to know and that is If I buy say destiny for the 360 and my friend buys it for the xbox 1 will we still be able to play multiplayer with each other or will you be forcing us to "Follow the leader" if we can still play games together and talk I will keep going with the 360 but if you don't then I don't know what I will do as honestly I don't have a lot of money and I want to play all 120 of my 360 games (most pre-owned) and yeah

[Quoteth=msrep]Q: Xbox One is a more powerful product compared to Xbox 360, but does it also use more power?
A: No. By providing multiple power states in Xbox One, we’ve balanced energy efficiency with functionality. We’ve taken a completely different approach to how Xbox One consumes power. It only uses the power it needs at that particular moment for the task at hand.[/endethquoteth]

technically a lie, if you purely use the console for gaming, it uses more power

The fee to play a used game isn't going to make second hand gaming more more expensive it's just going to drop the price of used games that will have to compensate for the new fee. I really don't care if Gamestops stock dropped it just means that developers will finally make a little money off of Gamestops huge profits they make for selling the used games these guys have spent millions to make.

@76 Many people have noticed that and its certainly put Sony in a good position atm as MS take the flack for it. Im sure Sony also have the same or a similar system in place though. These reveals have been as much about what hasnt been said as they are about what has been said. Im sure the only other reason that EA would have dropped the online pass completely is if all their console games were Xbox exclusives. But then EA would never deliberately miss out on a big chunk of the market.

for 3 Years in a row. It seems lots of ppl lose interest in games or move to other stuff like free to play or whatever. Fact is the buisiness of console games went down more than 50% copared to 2009/2010.
Does MS really think they can revitalize the market by restictions and annoying decisions NO ONE OF US REALLY WANTS??? Some of us can deal with it but i dont think you guys really like it.

@93 last time i checked if you had silver membership which is free you could update the console and games. So i would assume going with that idea you can do the same thing on the new system.

As for backwards compatibility the ps4 doesn't have that either. Neither of the new systems do.I will wait a bit to see what microsoft has planned before i decided if i like it or not.

@97 some people always want to buy stuff like that, i see no use for it either but i am sure there are people out there who will buy it.

Yep. I was stuck on dialup for 10 years. When Verizon finally made DSL available it was only 3mb. I don't expect that to improve unless I leave my 150 acre farm and move to the city. Simply not fair. I finally got DSL right after Halo Reach was released, only to find myself constantly trash talked and plagued by idiots that refuse to play co-op modes and earn their ranks/commendations. I missed out on previous Halos. Now it's become primarily kill farming and commendation/KD boosting. Here's hoping Bungie will come through with Destiny.

well i am a vet of 10 yrs. i am not impressed at all. what started as a gaming console. is now a multi media hub. netflix and games with blueray is all i want. which i have on ps3 so why buy this. your games save to cloud. now you need accesses to internet for game saves. when servers shutdown so to does your saves. even tv has terrabyte pvr so why not xbox. i am not buying this. to many warning signs. MS and publishers want more control over buying/playing games. i like my old games too but dont want the clutter of multi systems. thats why i like collections like midway genesis extra.

i also get impression 360 was test plateform for this. now MS wants us all to do it their way. i am not sheep and will go elsewhere now for gaming.

Wow. Guess I'm one of a small number of people excited about the Xbox One.

To the people saying "I just want it to play games wahhh wahhh," does that. It just does a lot of extra cool shit as well.

To the people concerned with backwards compatibility- that PS4 you're threatening to buy isn't compatible with your 360 games either.
P.S. You will be able to play your old 360 with your same profile and Xbox One switching between the two like you can with GFWL and Windows 8 or Windows Phones. Same profile, different platforms- no problems.

IMO, the new Kinect looks badass, the "all-in-one" concept of the console is great, the cloud doesn't bother me (you don't HAVE to use it- just hook up an external HDD via USB if you need extra space), and the used game surcharge makes sense for developers. How many developers have had to close their doors recently because of low sales? This is good for the game industry as a whole, if the developers get the money from the used game fee we have to pay (I can't imagine the money ONLY going to Microsoft). I want new and exciting games and that means the developers have to stay in business to make these games.

Anyway, I'm excited. Can't wait!

@6 Its obvious the disc will be required just like it is when you install now. They are not stupid enough to overlook that when they didn't with the 360.

@26 Bluray has nothing to do with backwards compatibility or not, it still read dvd's and cd's just fine, just adds the ability to read bluray discs.

When you install a game to your harddrive, you no longer need the disc to play that game. The fee is there to stop a group of people buying a single copy for everyone. It makes sense and I'm glad it's there.

The fee is downright stupid, and I can't see how it is legal. there will be many lawsuits and anti-trust suits over it if they try it. This will put many gamestops out of business, and will close gamefly for certain. This is pure monopolistic, anti-consumerist bs. Whatever happened to owning what you buy? I really, really hope consumer rights will catch up with the digital age soon, or we will end up with this crap on everything, and companies will own everything. If ps4 does this too, I will not touch this gen at all.

Another game crash is coming, and this seems to be something to kick it off quicklike. I swear game companies don't have any clue about reality and gamers' desires anymore. Hell, they are going to lose almost half their userbase from the net required thing.

To people complaining about the xbox needing to be a game console. Then play games and stop bitching. Simple as that, idc if you don't use any of the features because it reality they all come in handy eventually (for myself anyway)

What i would like to know, if games will be region locked to consoles. Or will it be like the PS3 and play games from any country, I'll love to start playing fully Japanese games.

Microsoft are so out of touch with their consumers, it's unbelievable. Most of the "features" are things that harm the system more than benefit.

Thanks for the good news Microsoft. Wait this is all bad news. Well I may have liked the presentation reveal yesterday but the bad news just keeps on coming from M$ no less in interviews.

You know I expected as much for Backwards Compatible but why for the love of god is XBL arcades not compatible. Do they want us to spend more money and are trying to upset us.

Still on the fence about the system altogether now with the bad news keeps coming so hopefully E3 and the price range don't disappoint me.

There is also the possibility the used game fee could hurt rental places like Family Video. Cause I rent a lot of games before buying them.

What happens when inevitably peoples accounts get hacked and they lose, do they have to buy all those games linked to their account again ...

Or what happens if a developer loses the license to a game or they go bust, will we still be able to buy the code to unlock the 2nd hand game?

Some of the features they announced are neat and all, but none of them make me want to run out and buy one. I have a tablet, an iphone, a PC, and a laptop. I really don't need my Xbox to search the web for me. Switching from Xbox to live TV currently is as simple as pressing the "input" button on my remote, how is that an interesting feature? Everything they announced yesterday regarding the console was, at best, something that I'd say "oh, that's cool I guess" if I bought it for a separate purpose (games) but nothing that I really desire. And seriously, the best game reveals you could do are "it's going to have Madden and Call of Duty?" What a shock!

I was already leaning towards a PS4 this time around just to stop having to pay for multiplayer, and this pretty much sealed the deal. Maybe E3 will blow me away, but I somehow doubt it.

Looking forward to the Halo show, at least.

"P.S. You will be able to play your old 360 with your same profile and Xbox One switching between the two like you can with GFWL and Windows 8 or Windows Phones. Same profile, different platforms- no problems. "

That's actually nothing but problems. Each device (360, One, PC) gets kicked off if you sign in from the other so you're constantly waiting to log back in if you switch back and forth. XBL party chat does NOT work from PC/GFWL. More importantly, each of these devices requires the port to XBL be open for optimal matchmaking performance, but they only use ONE port! You can't have the same port forwarded for all 3 devices. That's not how routers work. They need different ports for each device to do matchmaking with since PC players can't be matched with 360 players anyway, etc.

Glad i've gone back to playstation after 5 yars with a few 360 consoles i had enough of Microsoft and their ways im in Europe and first of all it feels like Micorsoft Put America first yes i get they are a american company but building a system based on th needs of america is not the way to go in my opinion this tv crap they implementing is more for america hell Europe probably wont get much tv related yet we'll get charged loads for the console. Everybody already has a form of tv entertainment people to buy a gaming console because they wanna use it to watch tv unless you are a idiot. Stupid name console looks awful the 360 slim is by far the sexiest console so far not that the appearance matters i got used to my ugly ps3 and just hide it in the corner. Im really looking forward to the ps4 and would like to thank xbox for saving me a few hundred quid because this is a console that has really not sucked me in hell i would actually get a wii u than the xbox one despite already owning one and getting rid of it.

I would like to keep my arcade games and the very few GOD games I got like Resi 4. If an Xbox can play games like joust and Asteroids which are old as hell and were never originally released on anything close to the software of a 360 then i'm pretty sure that it could play 360 games. It's far too early to jump ship yet; despite what a load of crap the reveal was.

and with the new game fee the person who pays it also can play the game without the disk, so both people have the game at the same time. sorta seems like a double edged sword to me aye.

Bunch of horseshit if you ask me.

I do not plan to use the kinect EVER, I don't even have the room to place it where my gaming setup is, and now it is forced upon you. Seriously fuck microsoft, I don't want any feature forced upon me. And here's a scoop, being required to connect to the internet in order to play the console, be it 24/7 or every week, it doesnt matter, it is a big assfuck and I don't want any part of that idiocy.

This gen - new game £40
Play for 1-2 weeks trade in get £25-30
Gamestore then sells it for £35-38 as a pre-owned game

Next gen - taking as a given but probably more - new game £40
Play for 1-2 weeks trade in ??? say X
Gamestore then sells it for profit say a fiver X+5
The gamer then buys it for X+5 but then gets home and has to spend more to play Y

How much would the new game trader get? X against what they paid for it
How much will the "license" price be? Y

if X+5+Y = more than £40 why buy pre-owned??

I would expect to get at least £25 for a new game trade in after 1-2 weeks.
I would expect the shops would want to sell for a nice sum £25-35
The price for these licenses / pay to play fees would have to be small / reasonable say £3-5 max. If this new fee is anything like £10-20 then where does the incentive £ for pre-owned come from.

Is the trade in going to be £5
Is the shop going to be selling them for 0 zero mark up
Is the second hand buyer going to be robbed.
Is the pay to play fee small.

Someone along the line isn't going to like the trade in scene.

but then if the pay to play is small - whats stopping a group of 5 buying one game - at £40 then all buying a pay to play license = much cheaper

each new game could in a group cost around £10-15 each with the pay to pay license if the price is small.

Until we have some concrete figures / prices not sure how they can implement this with the customers pocket in mind......

A lot of people moan about the Xbox one and I do see their points.

However, I want to believe that M$ has much more up their sleeve. The no backwards compatibility however is a turn of... I better play my current games endlessly until I'm bored of them.

It'll be great if the achievements earned on XB1 are laid out like 'XB360: X GS XB1: Y GS' rather than a total of the two.
