Remedy's Sam Lake Addresses Fans Regarding Alan Wake 2's No-Show
Written By

During the reveal of Xbox One on Tuesday, Remedy unveiled its new next-gen IP, Quantum Break, leaving Alan Wake fans feeling somewhat bemused. Where was Alan Wake 2? Is it still coming? Remedy's Sam Lake, the writer behind Alan Wake has posted a video addressing those very questions and more.

Despite the first game selling 3 million copies, Alan Wake 2 is seen as something of a risk, as it took a lot of time to reach that number. There's a number of other contributing factors that have led to Remedy's decision to put Alan Wake on hold, and they're all eloquently explained by Mr. Lake in the video below.

Of course, there's always Alan Wake's American Nightmare, and there are some massive discounts on Alan Wake content on Xbox Live, including Alan Wake for Games on Demand for $4.99 and American Nightmare for 320 Microsoft Points.

How disappointing. Hopefully they will put Alan Wake 2 on the XBox One eventually.

I thought Alan Wake was great, but it doesn't seem like the kind of game that would or should have a sequel. If they did the same style of game with a new hero and new plot, I'd buy it.

Man this video had a lot of jump cuts. Disappointing news though. I'm gutted I might not be able to get work off to watch all of the E3 conferences.

Bummer...was really looking forward to AW2 on next-gen hardware. I hope they come back to it down the road. Doesn't make sense that no one would put money behind it since it has an established fan base now...but instead they are willing to bankroll Quantum Break (brand new IP). This might be the only time I'm DISAPPOINTED in a studio not cranking out a sequel :) Already bought my Humble Bundle though!!

Alan Wake is one of my favorite games so this is really saddening for me. On the other hand; I wouldn't want Remedy to release Alan Wake 2 at the wrong time.

Don't waste money on the XBL versions when you can buy both PC versions with the DLC and a TON of extra stuff for like $1 at humble bundle:

It made me laugh when you see him on TV in Alan Wake and the chat show host says "Do the face" and he looks like Max Payne ^_^

And #2, not in need of a sequel?!? "The Writer" ended with Alan starting to type "The Return" which would surely be a perfect fit?

I guess I'm in the minority on this but I'm glad that they are doing a brand new game and not just doing a sequel like everyone else. Hopefully these new consoles will bring in some brand new franchises.

I fail to see how making a new Alan Wake, which sold 3 million is a bigger risk than launching an entirely new IP, especially one that (in amongst the crappy movie) didn't exactly look that great.

Because Microsoft would make it exclusive to the Xbox One.

And the problem is that Alan Wake sold twice more on PC than 360.

360 : ~900.000
PC : ~2 millions (the PC port saw it's costs funded back in 48h).

@19 mind you the pc port was mostly due to price cuts that it saw sales but regardless it did to extraordinary on pc and I could see them doing the same thing release it first on xbox one for a year or so then release it on pc

Wait. The first game took a while to sell 3million copies, but was critically acclaimed by gamers and crickets alike. So, instead of cashing in on it's obvious success, they decide to plot out a new, unproven IP? Okay... I guess. Weird logic, but hey, I'm all for new IPs, instead of sequel after sequel.

@19 Those sales numbers are off you have there. Mainly because of a few reasons. I remember reading an article a while back that Alan Wake had passed the million mark. That was before it was put on game on demand and also before they put the digital codes in with systems. So if you count the sales of GoD along with the ones they bundled with systems, and lets add used copies which Remedy doesn't see a dime of, I think Alan Wake did WAY better than the number you posted, doubt it sold more on PC and if it did the number isn't that different.

It's a shame this has happened because it really was one of the best made this gen. You can't even blame MS on this one, the gamers just didn't buy it up when it first came out. Being released the same day as Red Dead Redemption really didn't help either. The only thing MS could have done better, I think, is advertise it more, never saw a commercial or ads in general for the game.

Who knows, maybe remedy is pulling a Konami and Phantom Pain and Quantum Break really is Alan Wake 2. But with this video from him, I highly doubt that.

Sam Lake, Quantum Break, Alan Wake, it seems everything is rhyming with Remedy. let's say their next game will be... Free Cake: how to Bake.

Sam Lake's response to Alan Wake 2?
"We have top men working on it right men"

I had a blast with Alan Wake and American Nightmare. Big fan of the atmosphere and the characters. I'm sorry to see that now is not the time to move forward with a sequel but I'll keep a light on just in case.

Alan Wake is amongst the top games I've ever played. I've been gaming since 1984. The story and execution grabbed me by the balls like a only a handful have before (). Though I want to see what happens next, I'm happy to wait for the 2nd or 3rd full wave of One games, and they are not looking back at the previous Gen, when Devs have really got there heads around the console. Give me Wake2 and Rockstars RDR2 when they can blur the line of what feels real.

@20 : I don't think so, not enough ads I would say, and also the fact that the game has been developped too much years so you need a lot of sell.

In France, for example we didn't got any TV ads for that game when Japan got some (except no one care about Microsoft in Japan, so it's pretty useless to spend some money there).

If they would release Alan Wake 2 only on Xbox One, it would also be a failure, especially with the last annoucements of Microsoft (personally, I won't buy a XBOX One or either a PS4, I'll just buy a new graphic card for my PC) and would sell less than the first game, I assume.

The only way to not screw an "Alan Wake 2" would be to release it on XBOX One and on PC at the same time, because it's not a game that sell enough alone on a console.

@23 : Was only talking of the disc version. Maybe it goes over 1 million but that's don't change a lot of things.

It sold a lot more on PC because the price was cheaper (as it was only a port, which also cost less in developpement that the original game).

And yes, we can blame Microsoft, because at first, the game was announced on PC and on XBOX, then it become a XBOX exclsive and we all know what happened then.

I can also assume there is a some people who decided to not buy the game when it's got ported two years later, because Microsoft screw them when they decided to make it exclusive, and also because the game was two years late.

I think we can also blame "American's Nightmare". I didn't liked the demo at all, looks like a banal action TPS with lots of guns and ammo -.-

seriously screw remedy for telling half a story. oh yah another generic shoot em up, so pissed . Horror games are steadily dying if it doesn't have zombies in it I swear. Im done with remedy, even a sequel on xbla again would have been tolerable. the first game took like 8 years to make, theres no way they're gonna go back if they end up liking the new ip better

That's what happens when you release Alan Wake on the same day as Red Dead Redemption. it also didn't have enough advertisements. people were obviously going to get Rockstars game. as i did.... now that people know what Alan wake is. they should have no problem getting the sequel to sell on the Xbox one. and it should sell a lot if they dont make a PC version.

This was a game I bought when it was brand new, and I still think that it was a good buy in truth, it's generally fun, well done, one of my favourite xbox 360 games. It's a shame it's not coming straight to the new generation, but we'll see with time.
Hell, I'm a bit impressed that they've actually gotten someone up to talk about this, they're not just ignoring it (cough) take hims Microsoft (cough)

@32 : Maybe he bought the game on XBOX 360, so it's better than giving 1 dollar than nothing, 1 dollar x 1.000.000 of person = 1.000.000 of dollars :)

@35 : It's the contrary. It won't sell much without a PC version, specially with all the bitching with the XBOX One.

Alan Wake =/ Call of Duty. Without the PC port of the first one, the project would already been buried for ever since long ago.

Sony don't need a PC port for Cage's game, which are often compared (which is a bad comparison) to Alan Wake but this sony and this guy know how to sell their project, Remedy/Microsoft don't seem so.

The brief description for Quantum Break on wikipedia doesn't excite me at all.

Live action cut scenes? A crossover show and video game that effect each other? What if the show flops and nobody gets into it? Too many questions and no answers (so far) to warrant any excitement from me just yet. Maybe E3 will clear this up. Or maybe Remedy Entertainment shouldn't be taking such a huge risk and instead just throw the fans a bone with Alan Wake 2 and wait to see how the XbOne does and make Quantum Break when all the kinks are worked out of the new system. But then again with all the confusion surrounding the new system, I have no idea what will happen. Again hopefully E3 will give us much needed details.
I never ever will buy a system day 1 (that's just a needless risk, let them work the bugs and the kinks out first!) but hopefully Microsoft gives us a game system worth owning and not a semi outdated PC with features not everyone is really into. I'm reserving all excitement for XbOne and Quantum Break and PS4 until E3. Please don't disappoint.

@41 i thought the forests were fine, the running however was horrible. Its like Alan had asthma or something. He got tired after ten feet, for a skinny guy he was horribly out of shape.
