Microsoft Explains Decision to Make Killer Instinct Free-to-Play
Written By
View author's profile

Microsoft Game Studios has explained the decision to make Xbox One’s Killer Instinct reboot free-to-play.

According to the publisher, the move was made in reaction to the way many fans play fighting games.

Those that download the game for free will only be able to play as the character Jago, while all the other characters will be sold as premium content.

“Most fighting games that come out are disc based games where you get a huge cast of awesome characters, but it is a massive cast,” Microsoft producer Torin Rettig told Polygon.

“Some games have anywhere between 30, 40, even 50 characters. And in reality, most players don’t play that many characters.

“You just only have so much time to get good at so many characters. So we wanted to take that into consideration and release the game in a way that took that into consideration and allowed players to get in and play the game at the level that they want to play it.”

A Season Pass will allow players access to all of the game’s other characters. However, no pricing for either the Season Pass or individual characters has yet been revealed.

I don't really think it's that bad of a deal, considering you would be paying $40-£55 for a game for the Xbox One, and you get what, 20 characters, and if you could get say 10 characters for 2000 points, that's not a terrible deal? Depends how much the characters are though.

The more I think about it the more I actually like the idea of free to play and just purchasing the characters you want to play as but then it all depends on the pricing model. Until then I will reserve judgement.

Makes total sense to me really. Why pay for more content when ultimately you are likely to only play as a few characters? Would like to see all beat em ups go down this route.

My only problem is how would I know what character I will like if i can't try em out first? Solution? Free Character trial packs, that are timed with at least 10-15 minutes. At least it will give us the time needed to fully explore a characters play style. That doesn't sound like a bad idea right?

The idea is good. But if the game isn't good, or unbalanced, it's gonna suck.

Everyone will play the same unbalanced character to win, while the others will play Jago. An army of Jago.

So how do i find out which character i like if i cant use any of them? I buy killer orchid and it turns out i dont like her i would be pretty pissed.

And why if you say that nobody plays as all the characters are you releasing a season pass for all the characters?

And how would achievements work? Do a 30 hit combo with sabrewolf. Oh wait i have to buy him to get this.

Moneymaking scheme at it's finest. Oh and it's not even made by rare.

I think it's a good idea, I don't play many fighting games and wouldn't buy the game, but to allow me to first play it for free and then decide how much time and money I want to invest in it is a good idea, as long as all the content ends up costing what the game would cost if it was a retail disc

This plan smells. What if someone picks the game up and doesn't like how Jago plays?
Imagine if Tekken did a similar thing but you could only play as someone lame like Julia/Michelle.

Played some Tekken Revolution last night and that's a preferable way of doing things. A handful of characters to kick off with, a few unlocks for those who play longer. The coin system is a little odd and restricts how long you can play for, but it also stops the pros hogging the lobbies.
Probably not too good for making money though since the coins replenish every 30 minutes and they're dead cheap anyway if you want to play for a longer time.

Heard DOA5 was trying a Free-to-play approach in Japan that has a similar approach to KI but you're given 4 characters instead of one.

Out of the 3 KI has the least appealing model right now.

How is this any different than a demo?? One character with a few frills and that's the "free part." Even fight night, UFC and others have multi character demos. Only difference instead of buying the "game" you're buying the "season pass" aka unlock code. Seems like some odd marketing ploy. Also, I may not use all characters on the regular but I like to try them and my friends may have different taste in characters.

As someone who likes to be proficient in ALL characters in a game, I would have to say wrong again microsoft. You're on a fucking roll guys keep it up.

Other than that, Jago was my favorite character.

And even other than that, fuck you Xbox Done, Microsoft as well. PS4/PC/WiiU = next gen

@18 Jago is a balanced character... hes as good as any to at least get a hang of whether you like the game or not as well as the fact despite the depth of the mechanics the combat in itself can be picked up quickly by any skill level. The issue for many is as you said - one character instead of general acceptance that the standard should be at the very least two.

Still i dont blame them for this approach... with zero fighting game competition for launch that we know of it has a real chance of growing a community even if it will be a lot of online Jago battles haha. Games like Tekken and DOA5 going free to play less problematic in regards to character choices because weve all seen their games routinely - Killer Instinct has been MIA since the 90s, thats a hell of a lot less modern gamers who will be even aware of the series existance, were all of a certain age who cheered the games reveal at E3.

I guess it just depends on your gaming preference. If you're the type that will play for the cheevos, you can bet that you'll have to PAY for those cheevos via DLC characters. Very unlikely that you could 100% it with just Jago. Either way I won't be able to play the game.

He's got a point. I had to quit playing fighting games because people would just play with whatever character a bunch of losers with computers had calculated had the best frame rate/lag counters. It was like playing World of Warcraft again, no one played for fun and used their favorite characters, they just used whatever overpowered character/combo string there was.

i dont mind it at all , its true what they say you never play as all the characters, on mortal kombat i wanna be sub zero or scorpion, thats about it though i dont mind a bit of johnny cage haha, on injustice superman or batman and sometimes green lantern, street fighter i play ken or chun li, soul calibur theres bout 3 i play as, tekken its hoarang , king or lei, i always saw this as an arcade game anyways, so your getting one of the key characters anyways to get a feel and taste for the game, i reckon the full game will be like 2000msp or the equivalent of, and each character will be about 320msp to make it a but better value to buy em all, but i think as i remember there were only 2 characters i played as on the snes. i dont mind the method at all

"Some games have anywhere between 30, 40, even 50 characters. And in reality, most players don’t play that many characters." So instead you removed the choice for players anyway that sounds like such a bogus way to do things.

Why not just release the game as standard and then make a free demo instead of the guise of F2P bullshit.

But there will be an achievement for beating the game with all characters, forcing us to pay more than we would have if we just paid for a full price game up front. F2P and achievements don't mix.

And how about, instead of Jago as the free character, our first character is free no matter who we choose. Limiting it to Jago makes your so called F2P game a demo.

I'd say the people that play EVERY character are in the extreme minority. Something like Injustice I like to play all the characters, but that's because I'm a DC Comics fan. With Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter or KI (old skool on the N64), I'd only play with about 5 characters tops. The only time I'd play the other characters were if achievements or story content was involved. MK, I rarely play anyone other than Lui Kang or Sub-Zero, SF it's either Ken/Ryu or Vega and KI it was mostly Fulgore/Spinal.

That being said, there needs to be a way you can "try out" characters to see if they fit your play style. Maybe a "five match" demo or something like that. One match isn't enough to figure it out. Maybe a practice mode to see EVERYONE'S moves, but you can only play the game with them if you purchase the character.

@31 you can still buy a disc in store for the standard price think of it as a demo more or less or if you only wanted 2 characters

@29 you do know tekken went f2p on ps3 with almost the exact same setup
and doa is also going f2p with a similar setup, most people agree though why pay for 40 characters if you only play roughly 5

I'm not going to jump on the hate band wagon yet. It has potential provided its a fair price per character...you don't have to buy all characters to get achievements...and/or there is some way to demo a character, maybe offline or something. Also, if the season pass isn't ridiculous this could potentially be a decent idea. It all depends on their execution.

Unless there is a way to try the characters out before buying them how the hell are you supposed to know which you will be suited to and buy?

If they are gonna pull a line about making it suited to you then it should have no playable characters and just be a create-your-own fighter [either complete or purely cosmetic with all the same moves.]

Selling pre-made characters that you cannot even try out first and claiming that gives players choice and value for money is a lie.

Be interesting to see how the free-ware model works with achievements. Games sell with 1000 gamerscore, but what about these? How many points can you get without spending any money? How much would you have to spend to unlock all 1000. Of course there are also all the "floating" achievements delevopers can add on later.

I don't think people who try all the characters are the minority, they're the majority.

Also, there will DEFINITELY be achievements tied to certain characters and because M$ know a LOT of people are achievement perfectionists that they'll dish out for all the characters.

I can easily bet that adding up the pricing off all the characters together will definitely be almost double that of a normal retail game.

The main reason M$ is doing this? It's simple, it's £££££ $$$$$$$$$ £££££££ $$$$$$$$

the idea sounds fine in theory when put like that but like others have pointed out, how do you know which character you will stick as until you play them all, as always with fighting games i always go through the story/arcade/quest/whatever mode with Everyone first and then basically stick with one after that because you need to get a feel of them all to know which one you prefer

its just as likely MS has someone from the original staff working at this developer as the original Rare team is working on it.

Let's say MS is right, and most people will only play as one character: JAGO!? Fucking really? If you're going to release one character, go with one that a lot of people are likely to play as their primary.

The popular speculation seems to be that the price of unlocking every other character will be about the same as a retail game. First off, I doubt that will be the case. I've yet to see a single F2P game in which purchasing the content available wouldn't cost you a hell of a lot more than buying a full game would. That's the entire reason devs make F2P games in the first place: because they'll make more money off them. Whether I'm right or wrong, there are really two outcomes:

1) Costs the same as retail once you buy characters: Fine, great. But what they've released in that case isn't a F2P game, it's a demo. I'm fine with them deciding to release a demo, but don't pretend it's a full game. Don't sell me a mule and tell me it's a stallion.

2) Costs way the hell more: Then it's just a cynical money-grad trying to cash in on nostalgia.

My money's on 2.

@2 - Didn't you see Rare's big announcement at E3? They're so excited to be bringing you Kinect Sports RIVALS for the Xbone!

This pay as you go shit for the characters is still insanely stupid. Yeah people don't play as every character, but people do like to experiment with some new characters to see if they like them. Now in order to do that you'd have to buy them first. What about the achievements that will no doubt include beat arcade mode with every character. I think most people would just like the game as we've had fighting games for years. A disc-based game with all the characters that you can play with as you wish. There's never been anything wrong with that format ever.

As long as they eventually release a complete retail disc version of this (which I can get cheaper on Amazon etc.), I'll be happy.

I guess we're all different with fighting games, but I prefer to at least try out all of the characters, and probably even play through the story with each of them at least once (especially in Killer Instinct!)

For these people that apparently don't like to have that many characters to play as, they should do it so that in practice mode you can use any character to see if you like them, then decide if you want to purchase any of them to use in story/multiplayer.

#7 and #8 Make great points.

I don't see why we aren't given the opportunity to try all characters first to see which suits us best, then we are to choose the one we want to unlock as our main character and if we want the other characters down the road, then we can choose to make a purchase. Only seems fair to me.

$1 or $2 per character might be good. Why not let us pick 1 character for free? RAther than forcing us to play 1 predetermined character?

The game is free, and you have the OPTION of buying more characters.

So why not just master the one guy?

@59 achievement hunters often have a choice to play a game for enjoyment or pay for the ability to earn achievements via dlc. Here there will likely be a choice to paly for fun cheaply or maybe pay for the complete experience an achievements. Why should people expect something for nothing?

It's a good idea, if you like the thought of going against Jago almost every match. Everyone has a favorite character, but that doesn't mean that is all anyone ever plays as. Yeah, my favorite character was Spinal, but I also enjoyed playing as Riptor, Sabrewolf, Cinder, and Glacius. I just really REALLY hope they don't make Eyedol a buyable character...and I hope that the pricing is acceptable because I've been really anticipating this release for the longest time, and it'd be SUCH a letdown to have it flop based on some devs assumption on how others play fighting games...

Is it because they are money grubbing D-bags? I haven't read the article yet, but I bet that's it.

I suppose i understand, but it would be nice if you have the option to choose?

Maybe like given a free character token or something like that?

My personal favourites were Cinder and TJ Combo.

You know all characters will be day 1, on-disc dlc right.. Oh i forgot ... day one digital dlc.. either way, what you download will have the models, movesets and everything for the other characters already in the game files...

Leave it to the hackers to unlock the characters.. on a modded xbone of course.. since the regular xbones will have online drm... Actually I hope they are in the game files.. it will allow them to allow all characters in practice mode...

I see no problem with the idea, my concern though is what if a compatibility pack has to be downloaded so that you can use your favorite character against your opponent and vice versa?

I love how many people on here don't understand how the free to play model works.

This is a smart idea, give people both options, buy the full game or get it F2P and pay for any additional characters you want.

In theory, this is not an awful idea. I fear that in execution it will be.

This idea REQUIRES trial versions of the characters. You need to be able to play a character to know if you want to own a character under this pricing model. There has to be some way of playing through a tutorial/practice mode (to learn the moves) and then an option to use the character in a certain number of fights...either online or offline, just to try out the moveset. Otherwise the whole thing makes no sense...this isn't DC or Marvel or whatever where people can buy characters based on story recognition.

Also, the total price for ALL characters should add up to 60 bucks, roughly. That would make sense under the argument they put forth...that this pricing model is a savings to the customer. Let's say the game has 30 characters, not counting the free one. Each character should cost 2 dollars, no more. I fear, though, that they will price characters at five bucks a piece....other games have done that and while it may be okay for DLC, it would be horrible if you wanted a full game.
