EA’s much unloved Online Pass scheme will not return as a result of Microsoft’s dramatic reversal on Xbox One DRM, says the publisher.
Online Passes were scrapped last month, due to what many speculated was Microsoft’s stringent restrictions on the sharing and sale of disc-based Xbox One games.
It was believed that thanks to the console effectively putting a stop to the pre-owned game trade, EA did not have to use Online Passes to recoup lost revenue.
However, last night’s revelations prompted questions as to whether Online Passes would return. EA says they won’t.
"As we said a few weeks ago, none of our new EA titles will include online pass, and we are removing it from existing games as well," EA director of corporate communications John Reseburg told Polygon.
Reseburg went on to say that the publisher had "Nothing else on today's news, but did want to be clear that our Online Pass decision was based on player feedback, and there's no change."
Microtransactions, however, will continue unabated.
