E3 2013: The Crew’s Julian Gerighty Talks Persistent Worlds, Ambition & Variety

Ubisoft had a couple of surprises up its sleeves for this year’s E3, both with an online MMO vibe to them. Firstly, there was Tom Clancy’s The Division, an MMORPGTTPSRTSTAO – massively multiplayer online role-playing tactical third person shooter real time shooter that’s action-orientated (trademark pending) – and then there was The Crew, an open-world, persistent driving game.

We caught up with The Crew’s Creative Director, Julian Gerighty at E3 this year to get the lowdown on the game. We delve further into the title, which Gerighty calls a driving game, not just a racing game. We ask whether it’s possibly too ambitious, you know, with the 10+ cities they’ve created, find out its structure – yes, there’s a single-player portion if you want it – and much, much more. Then there’s a load of gameplay we threw in as well. You’re welcome!

The Crew is scheduled for a 2014 release. You can read our hands-on preview here.

I'm on the fence for this, game looks good, and definitely interesting concept, but the driving almost looks too slow. For a racer, I want some high speed shit, but even the highway sections were slower.

"Massively multiplayer online role-playing tactical third person shooter real time shooter that’s action-orientated"
And I thought telling someone what MMORPG stood for was a mouthful!

Apart from MGSV(which I still don't know when it will come out), this is the game I'm most looking forward to for next gen consoles. It's the racing game I've always wanted.
For those that aren't sure about the handling - give it time. It's got about a year left before release. I'm SURE it will be polished up nicely by release.

MMORPGTTPSRTSTAO AKA we are retarded and think we are important and make stupid acronyms to say our game is unique and never seen before cause we have not all heard that a million times but we just want you money and we will F*&^ you with over priced DLC. I will most likely get it, looks great but the acronym can go pound rice and the folk that thought it. Pay people to make games not acronyms.

Recently fired up Burnout Paradise again and I have to say it has got me interested in this new game. Not a huge fan of Ubisoft titles anymore (they always seem to lack polish) but I will check it out at some point.

Guess it is sad I thought it is legit. Shows that in todays game world it is believable.

The slow-motion camera when you crash looks like it'll get pretty annoying quickly. Nothing more frustrating than raging when you crash, only to be put through a 10 second slow-mo when all you want to do is get back into the race asap.

Game play looks pretty decent. Looks more arcade like to Forza Horizons than it is to a true simulator. The off-road races looked pretty tame.

interesting idea but the only arcade racers Id potentially buy at this stage are Forza Horizon 2 and/or PGR5.

It's just, slow. Everything is slow paced. It's like mowing a lawn.

Wow it's got to be immense! I hope they get the driving physics right. That's what I disliked about Test Drive - huge world but driving was just horrible.
