Microsoft's Major Nelson has confirmed via Twitter that Assassin's Creed II will be the next free title for the 'Games With Gold' promotion on the Xbox Live Marketplace.

Currently, Defense Grid: The Awakening is this month's first free game, which can be downloaded now for absolutely nothing. It's available until July 15th, with Assassin's Creed II to then be available for free download on July 16th until July 31st.

Major Nelson has also recently suggested that should the Games With Gold promotion prove a continuing success, it could run past its originally allotted Christmas cut-off point. Halo 3 has also been announced as one of the free games on the Games With Gold schedule, though a date for its arrival has yet to be confirmed.

  • I'll get it digitally and sell my disk - result!
  • I would like Bully to be one of the free games. Portal2 would also be awsome.
  • AC2 is still the best of the series for me, even though i completed it im still going to download it as it's a superb game.
  • Best part of the series.
  • By success he means 1 million silvers converting to gold each month before december.. lol.
  • I'm not ashamed to say I enjoyed Brotherhood more, although II is definately a great game.
  • *queue bitching about Halo 3 being promised...* sad that Microsoft and Major Nelson had to make changes so everyone who didn't listen to what was being said at E3 can have their bottle of warm milk.
  • Finally I'll own AC2, in some way.
  • @1 - I was going to do that too, but Gamestop only offerd $1 now that you will get it for free :/
  • @9, sell on eBay and try listing it for $15-ish! People will spend crazy amounts on eBay.
  • @9, it is $2 at bestbuy.
  • In the top 3 games of the generation: Galaxy 2, Uncharted 2, AC 2.
  • Loved this game, might just pick it up so i've always got it, I think I enjoyed Brotherhood more than this, but I'd have to play this again, it's been years
  • Nice, you get AC2 under 10 bucks at ebay. Would be nice to get some newer shit like PS+ does with Battlefield 3 or Saints Row 3 this month.
  • I've already 1000g this, but I will be downloading it again for 2 reasons. 1. Its Free. 2. Its a bloody good game.
  • @9....$1 down toward the Xbox one. $498 plus tax left!
  • wow.a game thats over 4 years old and everyone has played we get for free haha.fail.get ps plus adleast then you get games that arent so old and outdated.today battlefield 3,saintrow the 3th,payday the hiest, unit 13 and ninja gaiden for les then 5 usd lol.
  • I wonder if its going to be one arcade title and one retail title every month. That would be nice, I actually was kinda glad to see an arcade game for free I could try.
  • I would like it if they made a game free before its sequel came out to get you excited like have GTA IV befor V or Batman Arkham City before Origins. As this could maybe even improve sales for the companies.
  • @7 The hell are you on about? There's nothing to suggest they changed anything; for all you know, AC2 was always planned to be the second July offering. Maybe you should be the one paying attention. OT: I'll download it, namely so that if I suddenly get the impulse to play it again then that options on the table, regardless of whether the game is with me (I move between locations a lot).
  • got the 1000G so ill just click purchase, if i ever decide to go and play it again
  • Heck, me having one of the old Xboxes with the smaller hardrive I was wondering how I was going to get space for these. But if the hard copy is being sold for that cheap that's pretty sweet too :D
  • Still bugs the fuck out of me that PS+ get alot better titles.
  • Already own it on disc.. Same thing with Fable 3. I'll wait for something I don't have...
  • Free games is great, but its not exactly a great range of games so far. Games about four years old which most Xbox owners would have already picked up by now as so cheap or poorly selling XBLA games that no-one cared about in the first place. I presume they'll be some kinnect & dance games chucked in there as well. I know everyone goes on about PS+ being rental blah blah blah but regardless of your view on that you cannot compare the games that Sony gives away each month with these games. MS really shot themselves in the foot with the launch of the XBone & you'd think they'd be doing more to retain the customer base they've got. Currently the games on offer isn't the way to go. I knowq they've also got some decent deals running alongside this, but a lot of people still angry that these games won't work next gen are holding off. Come on MS throw us a (X)Bone. SORRY!
  • @23 - that's because Sony care about their customers. Microsoft only care about our wallets. I've been a loyal Xbox consumer since the very first Xbox but now, I'm going with Sony for the next gen. And if they can provide a superior online experience (like Xbox LIVE) then they will pretty much score a slam dunk in every category.
  • @ 26.you are so right.
  • "Major Nelson has also recently suggested that should the Games With Gold promotion prove a continuing success..." Seems to me the only way to fail a free games program would be giving away games nobody wants.
  • @26 Good, go enjoy your PS3.5. You and 23 are bitching about a program that has 2 free games so far with a couple months scheduled that they will probably be extended. Just because the 2 games released and 2 games announced are not ones you want does not make it a bad program and plenty of people will take advantage of it.
  • Why stick with one brand? I've always had a Xbox and Playstation. EVERY GENERATION. It's still laughable how Microsoft has no choice but to copy Sony slowly but surely.
  • I sure hope 'Games With Gold promotion' run past its Christmas cut-off point. It will give me another reason to continue buying XBL 12M Gold membership every year.
  • I wish we could get some games that not everyone played 5 years ago
  • I'll pick up AC2, just so I can get that damn collect all feathers achievement, gave up looking last time, but as I love the campaign, wont mind playing through it again
  • I already 1000'd it, but my wife hasn't played any of the Assassin's Creed games. I suppose this is a good "jumping in" point for her.
  • Oh shut the fuck up and stop taking the time to be a whining pricks all of ye haters! It's free games, I hadn't played fable 3, am about to now! AC and HALO 3 are classics, whether you have played them or not! Am most cheap whinging cunts on this site rent all your games anyway so now ye'll have a copy of them! I can't wait to see more and play (what will hopefully turn into) a 24 game collection of games that give you a quick rundown on the developement of the 360 and it's life!
  • I can't see how anyone could defend this program. It's practically nothing--my $50 would get me a hell of a lot more with Sony. These are scraps! Let's put aside the "be grateful-it's free" argument (which it really isn't, as I pay $50 a year) and I can't see a single reason anyone should be satisfied with this. This is a major company grasping at straws in the face of what may possibly be a couple of major downhill years due to incompetence. Being complacent with this is EXACTLY what they want, and I'm amazed so many on here are excited for this program. And don't give me the Sony fanboy nonsense, please. I've played Xbox for years now, and was looking forward to the next wave of Xbox (hoping Microsoft would improve where they needed improvement) and was utterly let down. That's why I and many others have had such a change of heart; we're tired of being fucked by an enormous corporation.
  • @36 well said
  • I like Assassins Creed the best. The sequels are very ugh.
  • Meh... Beat the game so many times I don't think I could go for a seventh run...
  • These games are forever old and I've already played them. How could you own a 360 and have never played Halo 3?
  • @36 - very unlikely that these will be downhill years for Microsoft. Personally, I pay €50 a year for a great online service, with no expectancy for getting free games. Anything free is a bonus in my mind! and They're great titles that everyone should play (including the millions of xbox users that haven't played them). Picture owning a Nintendo 64, having never played MarioKart64, then seeing other people complain about getting it for free from Nintendo! PS+ is a rental service, whereas these games will forever be in your collection, when your kids (or grandkids) take an interest in retro gaming they'll be able to dust of the 360 you have in your attic and play some of the best titles ever released for the platform
  • #30 you can't be serious? Microsoft copy Sony? You do realize Microsoft has made every decision regarding the PS4. Sony doesn't have the vision or balls to make any decision themselves. They wait for M$ to do something and see the reaction. That's a company with a vision for sure. And Sony hasn't copied anything recently? No Move is totally original, Trohpies were their great idea, PSN is also so original. They're original contributions to console gaming in the past 7 years are basically zip. I'll be playing Titalfall while you'll be rocking Killzone. Have fun with that.
  • Got 1000 on this on my old 360, then bought it when I got a new one and it was in a massive backlog of games. Traded it in for some credit towards the XB1 and now I can get it for free.
  • I own Fable III & Halo 3 on disc... but I haven't finished all the achievements for either game... so I welcome the GoD versions, so I don't have to insert the disc to play the game - just choose it from a menu! It doesn't matter to me if they only make games free, that I already own... but if they release games I didn't own before, like Defense Grid... it gives me a chance to try something new. :-) I do know a few people who haven't played "Halo 3" - or any of the other Halo games (I know... what's wrong with these people - right?!), so maybe they'll give it a try, since it will be free!!
  • @41 a great online experience is to be expected. The $50 arrive has been advertised as having exclusive discounts and offers (which Gold does: demos, and the deal of the week) but are Live's offerings as substantial as Playstation Network's? Lets be real; they're miles off of what PSN offers. As for the games, you're right. Halo 3 is a classic. Assassin's Creed 2, while I'm no fan, is a classic. But these are games that I'd be willing to bet the vast majority of 360 owners have played. If they haven't, it's likely they have no interest in playing such games, as many have mentioned they're available for less than a premium coffee. And I don't understand the issue with the "rental service". For many, as long as they play video games they'll maintain an Internet subscription (that is, Gold or PS+). So "losing" your PS+ games comes when you give up the gun for good, and stop playing video games. Though your argument does have credence. But future generations could just as easily play the Halo 3 disc I have and many others have, rather than the digital version.
  • So I wonder if AC2 will include the all the DLC or if its just the base game?
  • I prefer the ability to choose from a selection, like each month have a few games and you can choose which ones you want. Also a couple from the last year or two would be nice, sure a company might lose a little giving a game for free but they would make it back with DLC and stuff. I got Max Payne when it was on sale for 400msp and didn't know it had like 3000msp worth of DLC!
  • @14 PS+ is a rental service, not free games. Also, for the price of PS+/Xbox Gold, I bought Battlefield 3 and Saint's Row 3 The Complete Edition on PC. They're mine to own, forever, for less money than PS+ and Xbox Gold.
  • Hahahahaha....you guys are funny...we've heard that before "Assassin's Creed 2 is the next free game!" Look what happen then.
  • Wow, 5 years too late
  • I'd download Defense Grid.... if Xbox.com wasn't down. And if Xbox Live wasn't down.
  • Just saw Halo 3 for £2 in GAME. People seem to be looking at this like Microsoft are doing everyone a fantastic service. Sorry but I'm not falling for it, not trying to start a console argument but when Sony are offering their customers games like BF3, SR3 and XCOM, I look at this as a really desperate attempt to convince people not to jump ship.
  • I'm willing to bet that they define success as "many people subsequently purchased the DLC for these games" and not simply "our customers are downloading the games and are happy".
  • Played Halo 3, finished the story, sold it. At least with H3 i'll be able to go back and try MP etc.. Fully completed AC3 too but might as well download it since i'll be keeping my 360 long after I purchase a next gen console.
  • @55 My Vaio caught fire because of the battery, resulting in nearly my entire house burning down. You have nothing to complain about.
  • @55 MS doesnt need an update to brick a console. I have 3 RRoD 360s that prove that.
  • enjoyed fable for free but already had and finished ac2 bummer :( they should only give away games i didnt finish or ever own whats wrong with them lol ;)
  • It's amazing the amount of Sony love tards who flock to any xbox thread to explain how wonderful the ps3 is and how great the psn is, I'm not sure how you have so much time in your hands with all these amazing free rentals. If your not connected to the Internet can you still play these games? Because that sounds a little familiar to me but I can't figure out where? Also while we are talking ps3 can someone explain why psn is such a chore bore to look through and why does naughty dogs games have that annoying swaying control with their games? The last of us is good tho. The only game I have purchased for the ps3 since uc3 probably makes my games list hit about ten on the ps3 and about one 20th of the games I've played on the 360. So Suck that ms haters I know which best console experience I had this gen and it was not sonys.
  • you know all this fanboy shit nonsense from both sides of the fence is annoying, play what you wanna play, to be honest i really couldn't give a fuck, im on 360 to play games i wanna play and thats it, won't be picking up ac2 as already finished. will grab halo 3 as shock horror! not played it yet.
  • there's a crap load of game I haven't played so looking forward to all the free ones. Fingers Crossed we get Mirror's Edge or maybe Alan Wake. I'm only going to be pissed if they give us a game that has its servers down and online achievements then MS will feel my full wrath (in a letter form).
  • Darn. I already have AC2. Oh well, just have to wait til next month.
  • I guess I am just the lucky one that has yet to own any of the free games. But, you know they will eventually offer a Gears game that everyone has already beat.
  • As an Xbox owner (5 in total, no PS3) I've just been on the PlayStation website to see their free games offer. And its quite astonishing. Yesterday I was in Game and saw the two consoles advertised side by side £429 + £349. The cheaper one is more powerful. It has been good the Xbox. Very good in fact. It still could be again. But it would need a serious re-think of everything. Perhaps most of Microsoft's senior management just pissing off would be a good start.
  • The 1st and only good game in this series.
  • How can this promotion not be successful? Free games..
  • oh and I concur this game is immense, easily top 10 for Xbox 360 need an edit button
  • The argument that "Sony is offering newer games like BF3 and Saints Row 3 and Microsoft is offering old shit that everyone has already played" is the biggest joke ever. Sure BF3 and Saints Row 3 may be newer, but who the fuck hasnt played those either?
  • @46 I'm certain it will be JUST the game. Fable II is one of the rare games that has a version that includes the DLC "in" the game, not just on the disc as an item to be installed (this is on the "Platinum Hits" version). However... THAT version (unfortunately) is not the GoD version. I noticed that "Borderlands 2" (GoD version) is (was?) on sale really cheap... but the DLC is REALLY EXPENSIVE (even with their so-called discount). If someone hasn't played that game yet, but wanted to... it'd be cheaper to wait for the GOTY edition! I thought of another bonus to having the GoD versions on my HD: I can let family or friends play those games without needing to let them handle my discs, and possibly scratch them or cause some other problems with them.
  • Good to hear. Still why do we have to wait till the 16th can't they just make ACII and Defense Grid free for all of July ?
  • maxed that out years ago, neat though
  • @70 Correct me if im wrong but wasn't BL2 worth like $15 on sale. Also, im pretty sure that the first 3 DLC's were or are $5.
  • @36 I salute you. You really understand this service just as much as I do. :)
  • @60 A lot of the people saying this service sucks seem to have gamerscores over 100,000. So I hardly see how you can call them "Sony Love Tards". As for your question. Yes, you can still play the PS+ games offline... You need to be subscribed, but you don't need to be signed in once you've downloaded them. Not sure what you mean about the annoying swaying control in Naughty Dog games...
  • Off topic does anyone happen to know what tomorrows ultimate sales are? Thanks in advance
  • @55 - WTF are you on about? Do you selectively read to justify your argument? Or are you just retarded? How am I a PS fanboy if I've been an xbox consumer since 2002? I haven't owned a Sony console since the PS2. Microsoft don't give a shit about consumers. remember a few weeks ago, when they still thought their policies were a good idea? "we have a console for those who can't get connected, it's called the 360 - that's our offline device". : From the mouth of Don Mattrick himself. And Microsoft have destroyed plenty of consoles. RRoD. Look it up. I'm simply making a choice to no longer support the company. And if you have a problem with it, I believe you can go fuck yourself!
  • Hooray! Still sad I missed the one day sale of AC3
  • You can't realistically expect them to give away newer games. It just wouldn't make sense. But don't assume everyone has played every game that's years old. We can't all play on the Xbox for hours every day, much as we might like to. Yes, I've (only recently, ironically) completed AC2, but only ever took a brief look at a friend's copy of Halo 3, and never bought Fable 3. So, for me it's great news. And I'm sure I won't be the only one in this situation. If you're someone with a 100K+ gamerscore, you've covered a lot more ground, so the odds are you're more likely to have already played any game that isn't brand new. Stands to reason.
  • But for those who haven't yet picked up AC2. Do it! By far the best entry in the series...
  • I highly recommend that everyone downloads every game, regardless of whether you have/played it. Even if you delete it right after, if they are trying to see how "successful" this program is, maybe, just maybe a high rate of downloads will convince them to expand this past Christmas.
  • Now to just wait for that "1 month gold for a £1" deal on the dashboard then :)
  • i will download it but i also still keep my retail copy, cause all 5 AC games looking fine in my collection
  • I tryed downloading it, but it says i have to change my payment options?! Help?? What do i do now? Its free, why cant I just download it?
