Gearbox Has New Next-Gen IP in Development, More Borderlands 2 Content Incoming
Written By
View author's profile

Borderlands developer Gearbox Software currently has a brand new IP in development for next-gen consoles.

Not surprising, but still noteworthy, Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford revealed the news on the Nerdist podcast, briefly mentioning the game but refusing to elaborate.

As such, we don’t know anything more about the title. Although the safe money is on it being a shooter.

Beyond that Pitchford also said that the studio has even more Borderlands 2 DLC in the works, despite the game’s Season Pass packs coming to a conclusion recently with Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep.

"Everyone was under the expectations that those would be the four DLC's and that's it," said Pitchford. "We are going to do more, we are going to do some other things. I don't have details exactly of it yet cause were not ready to announce what the other things are.

"We got more stuff in the hopper that we're planning and getting pretty excited about. So if you're a Borderlands 2 fan you don't have to be afraid that that's the end of it."

Hopefully if it's new campaign dlc it will be the same standard as the assault on dragon keep, I downloaded the season pass at launch and slightly regretted it as the first few packs were pretty lackluster!

More new IP games is such great. I am so glad Gearbox bring new IP.

I thinking maybe new Shooter RPG bit like Borderlands series but entire different gameplay and story compare to Borderlands and maybe very different style of graphics again compare to Borderlands either.

I look forward in near future for Gearbox announce what new IP game is like, what story will be and how much handling gameplay is etc.. :):):)

Whatever they have planned for BL2 they won't be getting my money up front, not again. The first 3 DLC packs in the Season Pass were poor IMO. I'll wait for reviews this time.

Level cap increase to 69, and more achievements would be perfect. Maybe even a new character!!

@8: They announced back at Pax 2012 that Furious Four is no longer a Brothers in Arms game, so technically it would be a new IP.

I really don't understand the hype for this company. Borderlands was an alright game, if a bit bland and grindy. Borderlands 2 is also alright, in fact it would have fit perfectly and reasonably as an expansion to the first. There's not much difference other than them actually making the classes play SLIGHTLY different.

But come on. Literally everything else they've ever produced is, at the very best and in the brightest light, extremely mediocre. Much of it is even bad. Gearbox is a C-tier studio that struck gold with a concept (RPG-FPS) that hadn't been done on console. It seems fairly unlikely Borderlands 3 will even be relevant after the release of Destiny.

Totally agree with #11. And I still havent forgotten how they defrauded everyone, including their own publisher, with the farse that is Aliens Colonial Marines.

#11 Gearbox made brilliant Brothers in Arms series in last generation consoles and PC that is big hyped for company until current generation consoles to get next hyped Franchise for company is Borderlands series. This is how very popular for this developers and they bought brilliant Brothers in Arms series for Ubisoft and Borderlands series for 2K Games.

Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway is awful and Gearbox admit in past they made mistake with it and quite rushed unlike they did brilliant job with Brothers in Arms series in last generation consoles compare to terrible for 3rd series in current generation consoles in 2007. :)

Borderlands and Brothers in Arms series is most hyped games until they released with huge positives about those games, popular Franchises and lots of fans were pleased with it and loved it.

Gearbox is well know to those games they bought us. New IP game possible will be their 3rd Franchise possible popular and hyped just like Borderlands and Brothers in Arms. :D

I've really gone cold on Gearbox after what they allowed to happen with Colonial Marines, plus the fact that I was really underwhelmed with Borderlands 2.

I'm open to a new IP from them, but I'm far from sold on it based on the studio alone.

I have been playing borderlands day in & day out since that last dlc pack was released. I am actually going to buy the original game to play the story mode also.
I do hope there is more campaign dlc in the works. Hopefully something to do with that "moon base".

How can you say you enjoyed BL1 but hated BL2? Game literally improved on every aspect of the first. I get that not everyone will like something, but if you're a fan of the first I'm slightly confused.

I hope it's more in-house DLC like Tiny Tina's. The other 3 are nice but just didn't have the GBX flair.

I know its not a new IP but Im looking forward to another Duke Nukem game from Gearbox. If its only by Gearbox because its the games that have multiple devs that are not as good(Duke Forever and Aliens). If its just GBX making it it will probably be good. The rumored Duke Nukem Origins prequel sounds cool, or a sequel to Forever would be good too.

Exactly the news I was looking for! Still can't get enough of this game. Got all characters up to lvl 50 and took a nice break, but have recently fallen back in love with everything the game has to offer. Hopefully the new DLC will be made in-house. I didn't have near the issues with the first 3 that others had, but I can still say that Tiny Tina's was by far the best all around DLC experience. Looking to cap out the rest of my characters this week at 61 then start fresh on Krieg. I'd be happy if all they did was release new characters. Adds a whole new spin on the campaign each time you play with a new/different character.

I have to admit I wasn't quick to jump on the Gearbox bashing wagon but I do have a toe on it. I've loved Gearbox made games since Half Life:Opposing Force which had all the action I had craved when playing Half Life. I love Half Life I just enjoyed running around with a Desert Eagle and a Chaingun on Half Life a bit more, lol. After that Brothers In Arms and Borderlands stole my money and I quite willingly let them because they were awesome. However off the back of these awesome additions to gaming I put my money into Duke Nukem Forever...a piss poor game even for when it would have come out. I know they didn't do all of it and they just finished it but still...come on a bit more finishing wouldn't have gone amiss. Then came Borderlands 2,which I was reluctant to get because I wasn't a really big fan of BL1 and was still butt hurt from DN:F. I got it and ate my words because it was fun. Then came Aliens:CM another complete let down. Especially with all the delays the recent controversies and quietly in the back ground making BL2 gamers pay to increase their Level cap in a stand alone DLC that wasn't even packaged with a brief bit of gameplay extension. It seems to me that they seem to find the most lucrative ways of holding their products to ransom. We'll make this awesome thing so long as you pay for our other stuff. And because of that I think they have some serious PR issues to deal with before they start talking about us giving them more money for bugger all. Especially as the BL2 DLC is going to blatantly be everything but more gameplay!

And breath...

Say what you will about Gearbox but I've been playing Borderlands 2 as my primary game since January.

Now if they'd just make Mr. Torgue a playable character...

Sure it had more achievements, but they were dull and unmemorable. Plus im pretty sure that Gearbox has pedophiles working there, else why would they have written so many inside sexual jokes for a thirteen year old child.
I wont support anymore products from Gearbox.

Probably be another character for Borderlands 2, if it is i will just wait till it goes on sale - same as with Kreig but if its a DLC expansion then ill get it full price day one, i love the game and i dont mind supporting them if they continue to support the game this far after it was released.

Maybe we'll finally get to go to the Hyperion Moon Base. Most of the 4 Season Pass DLCs were decent, but the fact that more DLC is coming is somewhat surprising. Perhaps they're holding out for another Season Pass?

Not sure if I want more Borderlands 2 to be honest. The 2nd one just didn't capture the same feel that the 1st one did. The 1st one was all about being a mercenary looking for the vault to gain wealth, which is what I think of when I play Borderlands. The 2nd one tried too hard to add a story to a game where story is better off being non-existent, and the story to the 2nd one was still a laughable joke. That and the fact that they treated Borderlands 2 like an MMO, which it isn't, make it even worse.

So I would prefer them be done with Borderlands 2 at this point. But I will gladly take more Duke Nukem. DNF was a blast, even though I know many people didn't like it.

"Borderlands developer Gearbox Software currently has a brand new IP in development for next-gen consoles."

In development by Gearbox or in development to some other company they hired to make a game for them because they think they're a publisher now?

Screw those frauds at Gearbox, especially Pitchford.

@40 Wasn't made by Gearbox. Maybe your illness is messing with your mind.

Gearbox has made:

Halo PC port (easily the worst port of any game ever made, bar none)
Half Life expansions (which weren't very good at all)
Tony Hawk 3 (there's a reason people still play 2 if they want their fix for this game)
James Bond Nightfire (this game was horrible)
Duke Nukem Forever
Aliens: Colonial Marines

They've also made Brothers in Arms, a decent series but nothing that hasn't been done better by a variety of other developers.

What an incredible pedigree.

@40 You didn't like the Halo PC port? Damn, you're one cold-blooded motherfucker.

You gotta admit though, there's worse ports out there. (Halo 2 Vista? Ha.)

I still play CE PC to this day, and it's still got a decent multiplayer community considering it's a decade old.

I don't have a whole lot of love for Gearbox (see #27), and I'm no fan of Borderlands or any of their other games, but I do like the Halo CE PC port. Just throwing that out there. I just played a couple of matches two days ago.

I don't think anything can top Tiny Tina's DLC. That was the most inventive DLC I ever witnessed. I think a big part was just the constant commentary from the "players" of the game within a game. A lot was natural like the previous Borderlands, not forced like the majority of dialog in this game...like they're just begging for laughs.

I kinda knew there were more DLCs coming for BL2 since the achievement points max out at 1625 which is pretty odd.

I believe Gearbox should add at least one more DLC to the season pass because the pirate's booty and big hunt DLCs were disappointing i think. Obviously that is not going to happen and we will most likely end up paying 800 msp for it.

For those that are saying that Gearbox stole money from Sega, you are idiots.

Yes they used Sega's money for BL2 but they put it back, which is not illegal nor is it wrong. It's what banks do all the time.
If your friend left some money at your house and you knew he wouldnt be back for a while, then you used that money to pay a bill and then when you got the money back you put it back(before your friend got back) is that wrong?

Also just because someone gets the blame for something(Timegate) it doesnt mean they are the victim, they are being punished for something they did wrong. You are only seeing them as victims because they are being punished, if it wasnt for them being punished severely you would have a hate campaign against them also.
