Grand Theft Auto V Gun Combat and Vehicle Customisation Deets Emerge
Written By
View author's profile

Following the debut of the Grand Theft Auto V gameplay trailer, a whole bunch of details on the gun and vehicle customisation have arrived. Taking its cue from Max Payne 3 and Red Dead Redemption "evolving" through their influence, the gun combat has undergone a serious overhaul in GTA V, making for something that's more "precise and satisfying".

In an interview, Rockstar's Associate Technical Director and Combat Designer Phil Hooker explained the refinements and changes to GTA V's combat in some depth. "We wanted shooting to feel more precise and satisfying while supporting multiple styles of play. The controls have been expanded, so now in addition to traditional left trigger "down the sights" aiming, you can also both run and shoot comfortably while only using the right trigger.

"This range of motion and precision is completely new to Grand Theft Auto and it really changes the way shootouts feel. Firing on the run keeps your field of vision open, while the locomotion system adjusts automatically between strafing with your weapon up and the more traditional style of locomotion when you are not actively firing. The additional freedom is great for the kind of chaotic shootouts that emerge when you're out in the open world causing havoc and quickly find yourself heavily outgunned and boxed in."

Each character will also have their own distinct styles in combat, Hooker explained. "Each character's personality is also reflected in the way they move and handle weapons, whether it's Trevor's aggressiveness, Franklin's swagger, or Michael's efficiency."

Aiming has also been tightened up significantly, with targeting now broken down into three key modes: "assisted aiming, traditional GTA, and free aim." Assisted aiming presents a larger targeting area and help analysing targets to pick out the largest threats. Traditional GTA is similar to the classic GTA soft lock, with the ability to switch between targets with the analogue stick. Free aim is free aim. 'Nuff said.

You should be comfortable playing through the entire game in free aim a la Max Payne 3 Hooker told Game Informer, who also revealed that the cover system has been refined. Guns themselves can now be customised, enabling you to add scopes, supressors, flashlights and more. Producer and Lead Mission Designer Imran Sarwar divulged the range of customisation options on offer.

"Ammunation makes its return in GTA V, but now you can indeed customise your weapons. The player has access to a wide range of modifications, such as extended clips that allow you to fire more ammo between reloads, grips to improve your accuracy, weapon tints to colour your guns, flashlights, scopes, and suppressors," Sarwar revealed. "Attachments such as suppressors allow the player to adapt their approach to some missions and take a stealth option. It's all part of broadening the range of tactical options for the player."

As well as being able to customise your weaponry, cars also benefit from a whole array of customisation options too, taking it further than GTA: San Andreas did with colours and body kits. Pay & Spray is replaced by LS Customs, where you'll be able to take your car or bike to be pimped out by your mechanic. But that's not all...

"In addition to the many cosmetic customisation alterations such as body kits, paint jobs/finishes, wheels, exhaust tips, window tints, tire smoke colour, bull-bars, extra lights, and lots of other extra accessories, we have modifications that will affect gameplay and vehicle performance," said Sarwar talking to GI. "Some of the modifications that affect gameplay include brakes, engine tuning, suspension, horns, bulletproof tires, panel armour, and of course, a general repair! There are more than 1,000 modifications in total. And when you're done customising your car, you can take a picture of it using the in-game cell phone and upload them to the Social Club."

It all sounds typically mind-blowing in true GTA fashion, and we can't wait to deck out our weapons and cars when Grand Theft Auto V launches on September 17th, 2013. If you missed the GTA V gameplay debut trailer, you can watch it below.

Best game this year that will be. No matter if some changes like shootout and Rockstar Games bring lots of customize for cars that is great things. Many and many stuffs in gameplay video show how much fun and feel near as reality. 2 months is not long now isn't?! :D

Rockstar said in an interview once that sometime in the future, they would love to put Vice City, San Andreas, and Liberty City, all in one game. That would be epic. And if you want a reason to fly planes, THAT would be it.
I cannot wait for GTAV. The vehicle customization and planes is what I mainly wanted to return. But the improvements in this game go beyond that. I cannot wait! Even two months is too long now!

@5 Game of the Year, most likely. Game of the Century? That may be pushing it a little... That's a lot of years of being on top.

@6 Three VERY different games that aren't really comparable IMO

@9 I would much prefer if they could make a new city instead of re-using the same 3 over and over again. Already bored of Liberty City IMO, and hopefully San Andreas doesn't follow suit.

OT: We'll see how this turns out. Hopefully Rockstar doesn't try to cram TOO much crap into one game. Sometimes simplicity is best, so cramming a lot into a game doesn't always work as well as it sounds. But there's a first for everything I suppose. Sorry if I seem cynical, but I'm not sure I can ever judge a final product from what we are shown ever again. (Thanks a lot, Colonial Marines).

@12 they need to make a game where there's plenty to do once the story is over or for those that don't want to it (yet) and also make it so all that hard stolen cash can be used , which in GTA IV was missing. I would also love a return to car stealing , it used to be a major part , I loved collected to cars to drop of at the docks. But I know what you mean about cramming too much in , as long as it doesn't dilute the main game I'm all for a game of tennis

Still wishing for a GTA Paris...give the old world some GTA loving.

This isn't just "some game" made by "some company". this is Rockstar we are talking about here. They always do good by their fans. And as far as your latter comment, the game is OPEN WORLD, on a MASSIVE MAP. So every little bit of content they add is better. It give you more to do for a longer period of time.

It's nice to see that Rockstar is being so generous lately with the videos and information. I suppose at this point the game is probably done and now they can focus on PR.

After this and yesterday's video, I've quickly gone from not being sure I wanted this after GTA IV to being decidedly interested, to switching all the way to "preordering my copy tonight after work".

@13 + 14 Fair points. I just hope there isn't a tedious amount of collectibles in this game, and hopefully none that you have to shoot and get a wanted level every time you shoot one (damn pigeons...). And hopefully there is a wider selection of cheat codes this time around. Cheat codes always played a huge part in the fun of the older GTA games (super bunny hop in San Andreas, or flying cars). I felt GTA IV was really lacking in "fun" cheat codes to use. I want another pedestrian riot cheat in this one...

Oh, and also the ability to melt on a mountain bike. That was always fun in San Andreas.

GTA V definitely has that Max Payne 3 feel to it. When I watched Franklin's shoot out in the video, i could see all the similarities between the shooting mechanics in MP3 and GTA V. I absolutely loved MP3 so i cannot wait for this game!

God I can't wait to see what Rockstar does with the Xbox One/PS4. Multiple cities in one game maybe? Flying from San Andreas to Vice City. Or somewhere new.

As excited as I am with the rest of you guys/girls. I must say, I hope they release this game w/o us having to play & get stuck on an object, encounter lag or game breaking bugs. Stuff of that nature because I just paid off $80 on a pre-order special edition.

Anyone got all the Michael Mann references in the trailer? (Family character wearing the exact same suit as Tom Cruise in "Collateral", the truck robbery that's 1:1 from "Heat"?-awesome stuff).

I really hope they will hold back collectibles and MP-level achievements, those are always a pita.

For all of you who are worried about it being like "Max Payne 3" I wouldn't worry to much, because Rockstar will have the option to make it so you can have the sissy auto-lock if you want it, or you can have the free aim, and as for the slow-motion parts that is just notorious for Rockstar games. Red Dead Redemption had it, L.A. Noire had it.

doesn't mean that the game will be bad just because of those "issues" Frankly I don't see absolutely any issues with this game or the shooting mechanics aspect so far from what we've seen.

No offence, but why is this news. Surely Saint's Row the Third already had weapon and car performance customisation. This should be standard for this game.

Thats all well and good, but can I actually store my cars this time? (ala saints row) or do I toss it in a vaguely defined space in front of my apt. just to have it knocked out and despawned by ai at random again? Even with the old garage system the fact that cars had to be returned to keep them meant you couldn't ever use them on missions.

The weapon customisation is interesting, but the car customisation seems a little unnecessary. I mean, it's GTA - if your car lasts long enough for your mods to be worth the effort, you're playing it wrong ;)
