The core team that worked on the 1992 Flashback is also behind the upcoming remake, which will be coming to the Xbox Live Arcade in August as part of the Summer of Arcade. You can find out more about the new Flashback in the making of video below.

Conrad Hart returns as the hero out to save the world and his girlfriend in Flashback, fighting alien morphs in a sci-fi action adventure. Flashback is out for XBLA on August 21st for 800 Microsoft Points. Read our hands-on preview here for more.

Original 1992 SEGA Megadrive/SNES classic? Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't it released on the old Commodore Amiga first?

Seems odd that they're using the Mega Drive/Genesis version and not the original Amiga or PC versions. Which are slighty superior to the home console ports.

So this is a remake and not a *taps chest twice* reboot?

All Sega seem to do these days are arcade reboots and Sonic.

@3 yes it was released on the Commodore Amiga first. Sadly Flasback suffered a leak on the Amiga and pirate copies appeared long before the official release. They lost out on a large number of sales due to that and decided to then port it to the home consoles.

Came out in 1992 and by that point piracy was huge on the Amiga, as it was so easy to copies the games back in those days.

Never played Flashback, but I did play the sequel, Fade to Black. Loved that game, so I'll have to pick this one up.

Hope it's the proper uncensored amiga/pc version with the zoom option & original ending rather than the guff that was released on consoles

@7 - not sure what you mean, the original was released on a Sega console but the game isn't developed or published by Sega.

It was a day 1 with the remake/boot but with the original too great! :)

The purchase was already locked down,and including the original is just icing on the cake. ALL developers should do that! (barring licensing conflicts)

This was also out a bit later on the Panasonic 3DO which was one of those lesser known consoles that pretty much failed and no one owned (like the atari jaguar). I was the only person I knew at the time that had this console, and have only ran into one other since that has owned one besides myself.

Looks like the XBLA version will be the 3rd version of this game i'll play, it was brilliant back then and I hope its just as good now.

I hope it's not the Mega Drive version, since that one had shorter cutscenes.
But this was definitely an unexpected announcement. And a welcome one.

The cynic in me thinks they are just adding this in to make old sods like us buy it out of nostalgia ...

Because most of us certainly won't be buying it for the re-make lol.

@22 - I owned a Jaguar, only person I knew who had that too lol.

@28 even if the modernized version isn't good it's still worth the ten bucks to me to get a retro copy of it in my arcade collection. It's more about revisiting a memory of a great game for us older gamers like a lot of the retro arcade titles that come out.

I was already ready to purchase this, now I can't wait. Had a lot of good memories playing the original on my SNES. Don't care if this is a remake or a reboot, count me in!

Okay, including the original has sealed the deal, I'm having this.

@S3M: Sure Amiga piracy was easy but nothing like as easy as it was with the C64. With the Amiga you needed the copying software, with the C64 you just needed to know someone with a double tape deck

@Lord Gothic: It may not be a remake of the SNES version but next week sees the release (only on PC so far) of Shadowrun Returns which looks pretty badass. As I understand it, is made by a lot of the people who worked on the SNES version, composer included. Not only that but it comes with a level editor so you can pretty well guarantee that someone will do a conversion of the SNES game for it.

@Perjury Jones: It's not on console but if you have a mid spec PC you should be able to run the 20th anniversary edition of Another World(

So awesome. First time I saw this game was on the 3DO. I was in awe at how amazing it looked. Finally, I got a hold of it on the SNES, although not as good as the 3DO version, it was still cool. This HD version looks awesome! I'm all in for this!

Spot the pattern:

* Zelda: Wind Waker - Gamecube.
* Sonic Gems Collection (Japan version) - Gamecube.
* Fight Night Round 2 - Gamecube.
* Guilty Gear Judgement (Asia version) - PSP.
* Flashback - XBLA.

As you've probably guessed, in all cases, it's the bonus stuff that's arguably overshadowed the main stuff. I just hope to God that the emulation software doesn't get botched (I still have bad memories of stuff like Sonic Mega Collection+ on PS2).
