Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2
Lords of Shadow 2 To Be MercurySteam's Last Castlevania Game

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 will be Madrid-based developer MercurySteam's last Castlevania game, according to Producer Dave Cox, putting a full stop on the franchise spin-off that's also seen a game on the 3DS, as well as the two Lords of Shadow titles for home consoles.

"I’ve always thought that this was a torch being passed down," Cox stated. "Nobody on the team ever felt like we owned Castlevania. We always felt it was our responsibility now but it wouldn't be ours forever. Let’s do what we’re going to do, tell our story, and move on.

"So we’ve told Japan headquarters that this is the last one for us... there’s nothing worse than when somebody’s got something to say, and when they’ve said it, they just keep talking. We’ve got a beginning and end, and it’s a cool ending and a cool story. Once we’ve done that, it’s time to say to somebody else, 'now it’s your turn.' Maybe it will be a young producer in the company looking for his first break. I think you’ve got to bring in fresh blood."

After MercurySteam's efforts in creating Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and its upcoming sequel, the developer has shown it has considerable talent in crafting rich and immersive gothic worlds. It'll be interesting to see what the studio turns its hand to next. It'll also be interesting to see whether Konami decides to continue the Lords of Shadow series without MercurySteam and bring in new blood as suggested, or draw a line under the saga for good. Time will tell.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 is out in winter 2013. You can read our hands-on impressions here.

My biggest fear is after MercurySteam's amazing Castlevania games, Konami might give the series back to that horrible IGA and let him make more copy/paste Castlevania's where the characters are all in anime style.

@3 Did you even read it? Of course there is going to be more games, just not by MercurySteam. Konami is not going to let this franchise fade into the mist and nothing in the article suggests it. It could be the end of LoS, but you're crazy if you think its the end of Castlevania. It's been around in Japan since 1986 and in the states since NES days and still doing well.

I actually respect them ending the series on what (should be)a high note. If SM did that with God of War we wouldn't have that pile of crap they recently released.

Loved LOS but you've gotta give them respect for not milking it and (hopefully) ending it on a high note.

Mercury Steam did a great job of finally giving us a really good 3D Castlevania game(or two). It's sad to see them move on but understandable as well. They remind me a lot of Rocksteady studios this gen; relatively unknown or unproven developers both gave us a pair of great games on their first attempts, followed up by delivering bigger better sequels and then moved on to something else. Can't wait to see what they'll do next.

it's a shame they are not doing any more of the castlevania games, but they have done a good job so far so credit to them for at least making the castlevania games so good and at least they are being honest by wanting to do something different.

maybe there will be another game in the future by another developer, who knows.

@4, how are the sprited copy and pasted ones bad? Those were the funnest in my opinion. The RPG elements are great for a Castlevania game, and it is so fun to go 100%. I can see how you can grow tired of them, but I, probably like many others, spent a lot of time on them and want to see more of those.

Now onto my two cents; LoS1 was cool and all, but I lost it when they added overpriced DLC for it at the end of it's reign. The LoS game on the 3DS, I only played the demo, and I'm happy I didn't buy it. I mean, the game felt unnatural, and really cheap. Definitely over-hyped. Hopefully LoS2 finishes off at a good landing, so whoever continues this legacy can forever expand upon this universe of a blood-clan, forever fending off the dark lord himself.

I enjoyed LOS1 so much that I finished it to 110% completion. However the two DLCs released afterward were very disappointing.

I want to know the release date for LOS2. Been staring at "Winter 2013" for too long now.
