Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 will be Madrid-based developer MercurySteam's last Castlevania game, according to Producer Dave Cox, putting a full stop on the franchise spin-off that's also seen a game on the 3DS, as well as the two Lords of Shadow titles for home consoles.
"I’ve always thought that this was a torch being passed down," Cox stated. "Nobody on the team ever felt like we owned Castlevania. We always felt it was our responsibility now but it wouldn't be ours forever. Let’s do what we’re going to do, tell our story, and move on.
"So we’ve told Japan headquarters that this is the last one for us... there’s nothing worse than when somebody’s got something to say, and when they’ve said it, they just keep talking. We’ve got a beginning and end, and it’s a cool ending and a cool story. Once we’ve done that, it’s time to say to somebody else, 'now it’s your turn.' Maybe it will be a young producer in the company looking for his first break. I think you’ve got to bring in fresh blood."
After MercurySteam's efforts in creating Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and its upcoming sequel, the developer has shown it has considerable talent in crafting rich and immersive gothic worlds. It'll be interesting to see what the studio turns its hand to next. It'll also be interesting to see whether Konami decides to continue the Lords of Shadow series without MercurySteam and bring in new blood as suggested, or draw a line under the saga for good. Time will tell.
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 is out in winter 2013. You can read our hands-on impressions here.
