Ryse: Son of Rome
Ryse Will Have Microtransactions
Written By

Upcoming Xbox One exclusive Ryse will feature microtransactions, Microsoft has revealed.

Apparently the progression system in the game is built around armour, which you can unlock by dishing out for Gold, Silver or Bronze packs.

“The way that you get armour is very similar to how you get it in like Mass Effect or FIFA,” said a Microsoft producer.

“You only earn gold while playing multiplayer [and] you use that gold to buy booster packs. Those booster packs contain random sets of loot. Based on the different tiers of loot that you get – whether you buy Bronze, Silver or Gold Packs – guarantees whether you get rare or common items.

“One of the things that we did a little different is that you can buy them with in-game currency and real world currency. The difference is that if you’re close we also have small microtransactions.”

Paying money to bypass progression? Great. Ryse hits Xbox One at launch in November.

I wouldn't mind this at all, if only it was reflected in the initial price of the game.

I dont mind this, yeh obviously you'd rather no MT at all but I've not spent a penny on ME3 (besides buying the game that is) and enjoy the working up the credits to open a pack and see what you unlock. Im probably in the minority though

This is CHOICE so quit your whining. You can still earn "gold" in game and play the old fashioned way.

Besides, if you love a game but can't dedicate hours and hours to it this is an ideal way to keep up with people who perhaps don't have a job/life

Id say get used to this though, EA dropped the online pass because all EA games will now have MT, it's nothing to do with the expected DRM policies. Many other games will follow this strategy. But as I've already said, I dont mind so much so long as MTs arent necessary for progression

@13 Bang on. I've always felt if people want to pay money to get everything then fine. That's up to them even though I never would because it defeats the point.

If I'm forced however to progress then this goes from a day 1 to a day never. Shame, I liked the look of this too!

@15 you should read some of the people playing it at gamescom as most people are reporting that is pretty tough game, and very very few qte's

On topic I can't say this is unexpected as microtransacations will be in almost all our games in 2 years I would say the abnormal will be a game without them.

As many have stated I am fine with this as it has no bearing on single player, it doesn't give a unfair advantage in multiplayer either, its like buying a skin pack

Wait, so to progress in SP you HAVE to play MP or spend real money?

That is so bullshit, and its the reason ME3 is still sitting on my shelf since launch.

This is the game I was most excited about, and now I won't be getting it. Sigh.

Wait wait wait... so, will these "packs" affect SP? (that's how it's worded) As in, will I get screwed trying to beat the SP game, cause I don't play MP, or won't shill out money for armor? If so... pre-order canceled. Fuck. This. Shit. As an OPTION, I could give a shit, cause I won't do it, ever. If you have to either play MP or buy shit to upgrade your SINGLE PLAYER guy? Fuck that. I only pre-ordered this game cause it was a Day 1, and looked cool. This, may just lead me to cancel it.

So, it's just MP. I'm fine with that. Microrape away!

You can ONLY get upgraded stuff by earning gold in multiplayer?! I can't upgrade anything in single player? Umm...that's not like Mass Effect at all. Maybe I'm confused about this but it seems like they're forcing the MP on the player instead of making it complementary to single player like Mass Effect. Don't want to play our MP but want to upgrade? Hands up buddy, empty your pockets...

Jesus Christ will you people learn to read! The microtransactions are optional. Just like in ME3 or Dead Space 3. In Ryse, like ME3 they are for multiplayer. Ryse, like ME3 has a horde style players vs CPU multiplayer, and you earn money to buy better equipment. No one is forcing you to buy anything. You don't need to pay real money to complete MP, but if you want Gold tier equipment straight away, you can do it. It is a fucking OPTION.

/End rant!

I'm with #3. MT are really no big deal to me unless they drastically affect the game. Everyone bitched about them in Dead Space 3, but unless you knew about them beforehand you could hardly tell they were there. I see complainers as using just another excuse to hate EA.

@36 I'm hoping (and assuming) that this pertains to MP only.

This is ok-the MT's in Mass Effect 3 MP had no negative effect on the gameplay at all.You can earn in-game which is cool and if your feeling plush you can buy a pack,or not-its entirely up to the individual player.

The game itself looks stunning!

@37 So it's basically pay to win for the first month or so before everyone else catches up just playing the game.

I really hope more games don't do this. Of course at first it's just optional but as more and more games slowly do it eventually someones going to try and take advantage to rip us off hardcore (probably EA, Capcom or Activision) that will put the players who don't conform to microtransactions at serious disadvantages.

I gotta admit though I didn't even know this game had multiplayer until today.

If this were EA, then this would be one thing. Remember that this is Crytek, and any money they may receive through micro's could go towards a possible sequel or help them develop a new game.

OT: YOU EARN MONEY IN GAME TO BUY THESE ITEMS WITH AS WELL. These are just temptations that save you an hour or two. The game will not suffer because of this, and it actually shows that there is some complexity to their MP mode, besides the typical "Horde" styled mode seen in most games that add MP these days.

As long as it's optional only that shouldn't matter. I know games that have it there for all those with stuffed wallets, which sure will save you plenty of time, you would need actually playing the game, but is by no means not achievable without dishing out extra...

Optional or not its still bullshit. They are exploiting peoples ignorance knowing they will pay real money for in game items. If people were smart enough not to do so, we wouldn't have this problem. Either way, I'm not shelling out more money to get better loot. I'll enjoy the game as it was intended.

I am betting that this has no affect on Single Player and is just a way to get more armor quickly in multiplayer. The problem will again be the classic Microsoft PR team that do not understand how to inform people of anything.

Microsoft PR are probably the worst thing about the Xbox One as they have no clue on how to inform you correctly and instead get it all wrong and then need someone else to jump in and correct the misunderstanding

@45 - No it isn't, if it was competitive MP I'd be annoyed too, but it isn't. It is the same as ME3, I've got a level 10 weapon, you've got a level 3, I might kill things faster, but we're still playing as a team. If it was competitive and i spent £30 on MT's to get all gold gear before playing online, I could see why people would be pissed off, having to put 100 hours in (or whatever) to get the same gear for free. Either way, it is still an option. Do I agree with it? No, but I'm not going to avoid the game over optional transactions, the same as I didn't avoid DS3 or ME3.

If crytek made a new timesplitters game they'd sell enough copies to not need MTs!

Either way I look at MTs and any way that people try and defend them, I just don't like it and will never support a game that promotes it so long as there is another game that doesn't. Its a gateway to bad things imo, plus its encouraging a generation of slack gamers who'll just expect to buy their way to completion in every game.

So in other word's if I want gold armor in the campaign then I have NO CHOICE but to either be FORCED to play multiplayer or pay them Micro-transactions which probably also probably costs money to play online too so either way we are probably going to pay them one way or another to to enjoy the single player experience. -_-

Happy Wars has micro transactions.... but, that games is FREE! LOL, I don't know how many times I can POSSIBLY say this, but FUCK MICROSOFT! I really do honestly feel sad for all you losers that are so wrapped around microsoft's dick that are actually going to go shell out half a grand just to get the chance to play games on the system, of course you need to drop another $150 on a game and Live if you want to play anything and not just look at your fossil xbone...

The problem with microtransactions is the little kiddies who get their mom's credit card purchase all this gear that makes them completely OP and destroy everyone in their path, leaving those that play for fun in the fucking dust.

Anyone who has not play a game with microtransactions like Diablo 3 or Happy Wars really has no place in this article because they have no idea the effects it has on the game in question.

It gets old seeing people complain about subscriptions and microtransactions, yes I understand that people think they shouldn't have to pay anything once they pay for the game, but if it makes it better or if it's even optional what does it matter? If you're so worried about subscription fees and microtransactions because of their cost alone, maybe you shouldn't be playing games as it seems like it's making you make life decisions...

Can't help but laugh at everyone who's clueless here.

QTE's were only in the demo to make it easier for the devs playing it, won't be as many in the actual release.

This armor is only for MP, article clearly states that, and uses prime examples with FIFA and ME, since both you can either buy or earn by playing the UT packs (FIFA) or the item chaches (ME).

And lastly, it's optional, why do people make such a big fuss over things they can opt to use?

@6 How does this effect your enjoyment of the game? You don't HAVE to use MT to get upgrades.

@25 ME3 MP had nothing to do with its SP, so if that's the reason it's sitting on your shelf then it's sitting there for nothing.

People should probably understand what they're complaining about before complaining. This changes nothing about the game.

Speaking on the behalf of someone who loves ME3's multiplayer and has played TONS of it... This type of micro transaction system works fine for me. If the booster packs are set up like ME3 multi player (as the story suggests)you do not have to spend your own money to buy the booster packets. While playing the multi player you will earn credits to be used to purchase booster packs with. All the content I have for ME3 was purchased using only in game earned currency. I hope more games are like ME3 multi-player to be honest.

I love how people are freaking out over some that is entirely optional and only for multiplayer. This changes absolutely nothing about the game.

Microtransactions are gonna be the death of decent games imo, there becoming an issue in more and more games now and personally I hate the fucking thought of them.

I don't like the idea of working hard at a game to get better, to get better armor and weapons. Just to have some chump with more money than sense, match my hard work with the least effort. It's a buisness model that I'll always be against and happy to boycott.

I think this is only for multiplayer...still day one for me as I don't let minor things like this affect my purchase.

It is utterly pointless trying to explain to these people, all they see are the words "microtransaction" and they go into fucking meltdown because they are going to be forced at gunpoint to hand over all of their money to Microsoft who are the devil apparently and obviously control all of the other developers and publishers in the world with their satanic puppet master strings!!

Ugh... I need a coffee.

If your really getting pissed off about how another player choose to play his or her games then stop fucking playing games altogether! Ppl complaining "ooo he gonna have all the gear I don't" guess fucking what? is tonssss of other ppl weather they use ms or not. You will always play with someone who has better shit then you espically in mutiplayer games. Also the fact that your complaining about something totally optional is ridiculous. Smh I'm not worried about the future of gaming...I'm worried about the future of gamers.

@75 I've now read the proper article over on Videogamer and its says that this is only in regard to MP progression. That's fine, but the way this article is written (poorly) is that to progress in SP, you need to either play MP or buy MT. After reading the full article, I feel better.

@67, yeah I probably need to play ME3, and I'm playing DS3 at the moment, so I'm not against games with MT, so long as they are entirely optional.

@78 - No worries :) It just gets frustrating no one seems to read any more than the first three lines these days and jump to conclusions about the game. It is the same with ESO - everyone is bitching about the subscription based payment method, but seem to forget the hundreds of hours of content, decent servers, CSR's online to assist you, etc. you'll get for the money. £8.99 a month for that is NOT a lot, hell, it costs me more than that to go to the cinema for a two hour film!

The thing is, everyone is bitching about subscription games, the same people are also bitching about games with microtransactions, the same people are saying free to play games are shit, or pay to win, WTF are developers & publishers supposed to do? Everyone wants new AAA titles, but nobody wants to pay for them. I'm sorry, but the world doesn't work like that!

ME3 online is great btw, lots of fun! ;)

@75 And I can't understand why people don't get that a game that has microtransactions is designed around constantly teasing you into buying stuff. Loot, progression, rewards, etc. all is designed around not to be the most fun but to keep you giving them money.
Its not like they make the game and decide that it would be suitable for the game to feature Microtransactions. Corporate command is telling them to design a mode around MTs.
MTS make a game worse.
Look at Plants vs. Zombies 2 to see where we are heading to in the future.

So is this armour crucial to the progression of the story, or just a way to help out in multiplayer? If it's the former, that's fucking bullshit. If it's the latter, meh. I'm not too bothered. Doubt the mp will be anything special, just like all the other Crytek MP modes...

I never spent a penny on Mass Effect 3s microtransactions and enjoyed the hell out of the MP. If this means Crytek will give us free MP stuff in the future like ME3 did, then power to em. They don't bother me being there because, you know, they are OPTIONAL.

@81 - But that is the point though, this isn't Happy Wars, the game isn't free to play. There is no incentive to buy better armour or weapons other than time factor. You can play to unlock items, or pay to unlock them faster if you're getting stuck, or don't have 10 hours a day to play, etc. Having a choice in a coop arena mode isn't going to make a difference to other players, it is the same as ME3 MP.

If it was like AC's competitive MP modes I could understand peoples annoyance at the fact some 10 year old used his mum's credit card to buy his way to the top of the weapon & armour progression tree (ala Spartacus...) without putting the time in, but it isn't. I don't think there should be MT's in competitive modes, and there aren't any in this.

EA did the same thing with the NFS series a few years back, with unlock bundles of all the best parts in the game, but again, you could unlock them through normal progression. It was optional.

@5 Or, some people have earned badass jobs that allow us to game a lot alot. Easy on assumptions.

Just because someone has a high leaderboard/score/items, does not put them into the no job/life class.. I would say, not being able to hang with the higher scores/players puts you in the less skilled/dedicated class. Some people work hard, and game hard.

This kinda stuff actually doesn't bother me. Free 2 play games that rip you off like crazy, I don't like. But if someone wants to pay to bypass the normal grinds to get armour or weapons then that's fair enough. I won't be doing so though, seems to defeat the point of playing.

Not surprised Crytek have said they see free to play and micro transactions as the future of gaming. Would have thought they'd use the two in the one game though

Wait so this game has multiplayer? I wasn't even aware of that. The progression system is only for the multiplayer then correct? The way I read it it sounded like it was progression for the single player as well and you only earn the gold playing online. If this only applies to the online then whatever. I only plan on renting the game to play the single player.

I don't mind microtransactions as long as what you're paying for is very obtainable without them. There are definitely some other games I wouldn't mind spending a couple dollars on.

I don't mind them as long as they don't make it like a F2P type game.. where you buy your way to victory and stuff.

The only thing that pisses me off with micro transactions is with DLC for example the dlc achievements pop up with the original game 1000G which annoys the hell out of me as the additional content achievements should not appear untill i have purchased the content very annoying playing :-/

I love how people are bitching about people being over powered in multiplayer.

The Multiplayer is Cooperative! Not competitive!

The more powerful someone is, the easier it will be for you. I think some of you just like to bitch for the sake of it.

LOL, This was the only game for the X-Bone that even showed promise of being good by at least being something NEW & they have killed it with micro-transactions!
Any game that has this BS should never be bought or played by anyone!
It will be the only way to STOP the developers from milking people out of more $$$money$$$.
It's not right so stop supporting it!
