Xbox Live Rewards Returns, Offers New Ways to Earn
Written By
View author's profile

Having retired the Microsoft Points system on Xbox Live, today sees the relaunch of the Xbox Live Rewards programme a whole day earlier than anticipated

Rather than earning Microsoft Points straight up, the new Xbox Live Rewards system adopts a credit currency. Amassing credits counts towards cash rebates, with 5000 credits translating to $5/£3.35 to spend on whatever you like on the newly rebranded Xbox Live Marketplace, which is now known as the 'Xbox Games Store'.

As ever, renemwing Gold membership, purchasing and playing games from the store, recommending friends and completing surveys will all count towards earning credits that in turn will be credited to your account as cash. If you still have burning questions about the new Xbox Live Rewards programme, you'll find answers in this handy FAQ.

Hopefully there will be more ways to earn credits than the old system, although I did earn quite a decent amount of points on that

shame that almost everything appears to be buy many things get very little in return, and only getting 250 per survey....hmmm, be a while til I get anything from that, as in, i'll have retired my tag by then

20 surveys used to net you a 400 MSP game, now you'll be 14p short, and have to wait for another payment, or pay the extra yourself (not much I know), but also the other "missions" are a lot worse than before...the same exact things as they were before, but with much less reward

the only good things about the changes are the extra "master" bracket for VIP's [making a total of 3% rebate], but i'm not gold anymore, so not VIP either...when did VIP change to purely being a gold member??? oh, and the new game thing, that is good for some of you, as for me, I can never afford a game within 30 days of it's release, so that is also useless to me

nice try MS, it'll keep the people who were already happy on your side

67p for every 1,000 Credits, that's 4 surveys, so in 1 year, you can amass £2.01. Hardly seems worth it, if my math is correct.

Introduce some cheaper and easier way for us to get these Credits, and those Credits will go up so much faster, as I'm sure the majority of gamers (at least those on this site) don't buy games/films on Demand here, or buy brand-new games at release date.

@9 Give me one good reason why Microsoft even has to reward you for buying content you WANT to play and enjoy.
Microsoft aren't going to tailor there reward program around just you. What were you even expecting? A free game or map pack everytime you spent a tiny bit of money?
Some people...

Personally I am glad it is back! It was always nice signing in and finding my MS points jumping up every so often. It paid for a nice amount of downloads ^^

Seriously? A bit of good news is announced and people are already QUICK to complain * Facepalm *.
Microsoft could have dropped X-box Live rewards altogether. People that are whining about it, think yourself lucky!

On a brighter note, I'm glad the reward scheme is back, I have used the service for close to 2 years and have got over a 1000MSP back in return, better than nothing as they say.

I like that they added the 3% level. Not that I am quite there yet, but I thought it capped out to low before.

Also I noticed "Play a new game, earn 1000 credits" I have about 30 games not on my card yet.. so what's that? 30 bucks I think. I may have to pop a few of them in ;)

no #13, I was maybe expecting something relating to at least buying games from whatever the fuck the store is called now...and for the currency conversion to work out as it was before, if you read what I said

"20 surveys used to net you a 400 MSP game, now you'll be 14p short"

400 MSP games are now £3.49, 20 surverys = 5000 credits = £3.35

and the rebates listed (excluding the VIP ones) are the same as they were before the rewards stopped (renting 5 movies at over £2.01 each, to obtain 1000 points, I never rent or watch anything over XBL, i'd rather get/rent it 1080p on bluray)

I used to get a lot from it, but over this last year, it became all about multimedia, with very little relating to games, indeed like the xbox dashboard has become since last years dash update - and if it wasn't for the fact that the console appeared to go all out MM, rather than concentrating on what it was made for, I may even have been willing to stick by them, but no, movies, rentals, streaming, advert my xbox takes an age to do anything when connected to live because it's trying to load all the ads

and MS needs to reward fans, I was dedicated to my xbox for 2 years until the service dropped in quality severely last year, at the time of the, when MS decided we must have every kind of media available, sod games - how long have you been on xbox may I ask ?

This could be a good with the push for digital, and anyone who is going that way next gen. Buying new releases digitally will save $2.80 per game, which is decent enough. (At the 3% level, and if bought within 30 days).

I prefer physical copies, but could be good for those who prefer digital.

Kind of ridiculous honestly, not really a point to it anymore, imo.

Buy FIVE map packs (at a minimum of $10 lol) and get 5000 credits? Oh boy. Spend a minimum of $50 to get $5 back, great deal.

Old one was way better.

I won't be participating for that long to be honest, as I'll be going to PS 4. Might get an Xbox One if I can afford it at a later date. At least if you live in a country that the Rewards Scheme recognises, then its free credits for little action involved. Might as well take advantage of it.

As expected, terrible. There was this little bit of hope that I thought the Rewards program would be worth while but yet again you have to spend lots and get hardly anything in return. I'm done with Rewards.

I know they don't have to do things like this for us, but they are making you spend your money to earn something even so small in return. The only reason this is here is to get people to buy more things. If you don't see that please don't reply to this, just down vote this.

Man the internet in general needs to get a fucking life. All everyone does is bitch about everything. The rewards program is pretty much the exact same it has been for the last 2 years. "Man they changed it right before I renewed" Well try signing up like 2 years ago? If you renewed in the ONE month they took a break you are a fucking idiot in general.

The author made a typo.. lets call him a drunk and that he doesn't know what he is doing.. Yeah there is some shit I don't agree with when it comes to this site.. but 90% of you are entitled assholes that just bitch about EVERYTHING. Take a fucking look at life, if this shit bothers you you need to rethink your perspective on life.

From what I see you will get $5 USD in your local currency. You have been bitching forever about the exchange rate.. now you are going to get rewards at the exchange rate, and you still bitch.

I LOVE the Xbox Rewards program! I got a lot from it, without putting that much into it!! Nobody held a gun to my head and made me buy games or DLC to earn rewards... I did that on my own (buy stuff, not use a gun) - and it was stuff I would have bought, anyway!

The FREE 20 MS Points every month (for taking a survey), over 2 years... and it added up nicely.

A lot of people complained that the rewards weren't enough. They didn't HAVE to give us 20 points every month for a survey, but they did! Pretty damn generous, if you ask me!!!

Oh boo. Should've waited to get TMNT. Oh well.

Anyway, this seems worse than before, since it primarily hinges on you buying things you are less likely to buy, but I can't actually tell because it's an obscure system now. Also, do you only get money back (points) if you spend $10? Not just "this many percent on all purchases"? And no more birthday thing or did I miss something?

I also can't look at more stats. Just MOST PLAYED GAME LAST MONTH. I liked seeing the comparison of stuff.

Anyway, not that mad. It was only useful when I actually got many games I wanted anyway.

I primarily use Bing for 'free' cash for the Xbox. XBLR is just for excess side cash over time.

Glad it's back. Not fussed if there is any 'loss' over the change from points to currency, if things are to be believed, as I only ever really did the survey's anyway.

I just wish they'd bring the Bing Rewards scheme to other places outside of the US also. :P

Except if you mean "bing" one. For "bing", yeah, you can only get points with it if you are in the US.

The Screwed people with the Bing Toolbar, as well.

It used to be (If you were gold, which was anyone who did the toolbar a lot)
that it cost 475 Bing Points for 400 Microsoft points ($5), meaning 95 points for each dollar.

Now they, not only, dropped it to $3, it takes 375 points (if gold) for it. That means it takes 125 points for each dollar.

So, in conclusion, they made it so you have to earn almost a dollar more to get the same amount as before.

Nice going Microsoft, keep finding ways to screw with the people that pay your enormous salaries.

@31 the writer got that from the FAQ for the UK, which surprisingly states it in our local currency

what i'm bitching about is 5000 = $5, a $5 game can be purchased 5000 = £3.35, $5 games cost £3.49 in the UK....this is fuck all to do with exchange rate, nobody I know bitched about that - I had no problem at all with the MSP, I actually preferred them to paying in "real money" what I wanted was to be able to use MSP on my phone too

i'm seriously starting to think some of you would defend MS in a rape lawsuit

i'm also very annoyed at MS for the pending closure of games for windows live (of which I own about half of the games, digitally, so I can't get a refund or anything, because i'm outside the week you're allowed for a refund) I'm annoyed enough at EA for removing Gotham City Imposters from my games list because the servers closed, now I can't get my game or bonus for paying for the game on the F2P (you need the code, can't get the code if the game isn't there to select)

those of you who only play xbox, and clearly not a lot, maybe haven't noticed how badly MS treat their customers...I've bore witness to being shit on from a great height, owning a WP7 with games getting removed from the store with no warning, go to download a game you bought a while back, it's not there [4 games, maybe 5 this has happened to that I "own"].....GFWL, the DRM is tied into the service, when the servers close, are we going to be able to play our games at all, obviously we won't be able to get achievements, but the only game I know is "safe" is dark souls because FROM said they're going to patch it before MS close GFWL (so that's 1/20 games i'll still be able to play)

you think it's fair for them to take away my ability to play things I paid for, just because I don't play them instantly - this is why I think they owe me something - they're willing to take my money for the games, but then remove my access to said games before I finish, or in some instances even load them up

enjoy your crossbone's...i'm finishing what I've got, then i'll leave you morons to it

$5 USD = 3.23 pounds. So you are getting slightly more than the US ($0.04). The problem you have isn't with the rewards program. The problem is they charge you more than $5 USD for games. 3.49 = $5.41 USD (Which is still a problem) You shouldn't get more money from the program because your games cost more. Your games just shouldn't cost more.

And from the FAQ you will still be able to play your GFWL games unless they change something down the road, but I agree, if you can't then I would be pissed off too.

And no I don't blindly defend Microsoft. I won't be buying an xbox one, or probably renewing my gold this year. I also own a PS3 and a Wii U, but I will in this case because the rewards program is completely fair.

agreed fullbrook,

it's the MS refusal to make prices even (had the same issues with WP7, some regions get games cheaper - depending on the price bracket, one bracket is cheaper in the US, another is cheaper elsewhere - it makes no sense - but you always get someone defending certain elements, and I always hurl abuse in their direction [i.e. those who defend gearbox over colonial marines, anyone saying good things about MS, because they take games off you without warning)

the rewards thing wasn't the real target of my gripe, its the pricing...and also a7thgeneration, for being an arrogant dick [like myself]

i'm gonna stay quiet now, it was a bad week for me, the lack of information from MS regarding the GFWL situation, the pricing of the store, a few games being far too glitchy (well, the fact that 3 in a row were pretty well broken) and some none gaming related things

I chose to take it out on people in a comments section, rather than do anything else, no point asking anyone at MS about anything, they only give you what the PR office says they can, and the xbox forums are completely pointless, even if you have a legitimate issue, some "ambassador" will say it's not the fault of MS, contact anybody else but them - unless its ban related, then they just appear to ignore the users [from what I read on the forums when someone I knew got banned, I looked into it for them as they couldn't - and the ambassadors, well, I wouldn't want some of them championing my product to tell you the truth]

IMO, everything everywhere should be 1 price, 1 currency, and everybody should earn the same wage for the same job, regardless of what region they live in...otherwise, you have regions that people refuse to work in, or that they refuse to sell in, short, I demand equality (globally, not just in gaming, but this isn't a place to get into the racial / sexual / regional equality debate, and I lack the eloquence to put a valid point across, I get annoyed too easily :D )

I agree. How it should work, and not really sure why it doesn't...

The games should be listed in USD. MS bases everything off of USD being a US company. So anyone buying anything should be charged $5 USD. Prices would stay the same for the people in the states, but all the rest of us it should depend on the daily exchange rate. Anything else I buy elsewhere is that way.. Why shouldn't the market place? Also what is the deal with MS charging me TAX? Sony doesn't. Why should I be supporting America? I don't pay tax to any other American company?

Anyways anyone with any common sense wouldn't take it personally being attacked online. Shit happens and it is a good place to vent. (explains my original heated posts).

And btw, I am an ambassador. And it is the same if you, or anybody else was one. They can't do jack shit. And my opinion of MS as of late is VERY low. My next purchase will defiantly be a PS4, but I am sure at some point I will grab a x1 in a few years.

Hehe yeah man, I suppose you're right there, even though some of our "outbursts" maybe close to the line, the internet would be a rather dull place without it

It can be fun for me re-reading some of my posts from earlier in the day, then trying to work out what I was actually ranting about, when I start im like a schizophrenic dementia patient, moving between one paragraph to another generally writing 3 at once, hence some not making much sense :D
I have also occasionally forgotten to finish sentences that way, but its how my rather odd brain works, once it gets an idea, it must be done immediately

Wouldn't say I ever get into the intelligent side of the arguments though, I tend to start them, then disappear ;) unless, like this time I think I went a bit far, or said something uncalled for and aimed it at someone, I've already forgotten again, I never intend to, I like to generalise and not insult any one person, insult everybody or nobody is my prefered stance..I'm just a prick on the internet, and hope nobody ever takes me seriously
