Xbox One to Support Up To Eight Controllers
Written By
View author's profile

Despite only offering the ability to login six players at any one time, Xbox One will still apparently support up to eight controllers synced up to the console at once, Microsoft has confirmed. That's twice as many as Xbox 360 allowed.

Boasting a 30-foot wireless range, the Xbox One controller also boasts "seamless profile and controller pairing," thanks to "infrared LEDs in the controller [that] can be sensed by the Kinect sensor," according to the controller blurb on

Eight player local multiplayer sessions? Apparently so, although it looks like two players will have to login as guests, while six users can log in to Xbox Live properly with their accounts. Neato.

Great for quiz games and the like. You'd need a whopping TV for 8 player splitscreen!

The PS3 had this but it was a feature that was never supported beyond sports games. Still, a feature that's better to have than not at all.

Does this mean the return of system links and actually playing with a group of your mates all in the same place (like the good old days) instead of over the net. I hate 'multiplayer' games which only allowed one profile per console.
Saying that, 8 people on 1 screen sounds horrendous unless you're on a projector

I believe this is in relation to games such as third person RPGs, I can't imagine this would work well with 1st person shooters.

Well, we all played Goldeneye 4 player splitscreen, with a whopping 0.02 megapixel per screen.
You should now have a gigantic screen of 0.26 megapixels with 8 player splitscreen, that's more than 10 times as detailed.

To all you you wondering about a release date, go watch the Halo Global Championships they showed a trailer for "Ryse" at the end to stated expected this November. Which is a start considering we haven't even heard for MS about it

Although I think that is a cool feature, Microsoft should remember we are in the year 2013.
With alot of online possibilities for different types of games and matches, no company will spend more time (and money) developing an eight player split-screen mode for any game. Face it, besides Rock Band/Guitar Hero, sports franchises and maybe Sonic All-Stars Transformed, what other game with more than two players split-screen are cool enough to be a reason for friends come to your house and play locally?
I think, right now, things are good as they are. 8 Players only could be fun on a game like Super Smash Bros or on some other where doesn't really exists split-screen.

I'm surprised not one person has mentioned how this could impact Halo. I remember the good old days of offline Custom Games with a few friends, usually FFA or 2v2.

1. With eight possible players, you can now have a 4v4 (or 5v3 or 6v2 for those less experienced) offline.

2. You can also go online with up to 7 guests now. Imagine BTB matches with one team being full of local players!

I guess they really are taking advantage of their "Home Console" feature, since you only need one subscription per console.

I don't believe on 8 players split-screen online. If on some cases two players playing on split-screen online already cause lag to the others, I can't imagine with eight.

PS3 has been allowing us to use 7 controllers and I don't remember any games other than sports that used it well.

This is cool and all, but M$ primarily pushes for Shooters and Sports titles so I don't see this being utilized very much. Party games are fairly rare on the 360, so I rarely got to use 4 controllers in games.

I barely get to enjoy 2 player games anymore with all these devs making MP and Co Op online only.

This seems a little pointless. A lot of games don't offer local multiplayer for 4 even when the online multiplayer is many more than that, so it seems unlikely to me that developers will push for 8.

Also, 8-player split screen. Those are going to be some really small partitions.

Heh heh heh... and I have the family gold plan :P .Won't matter as much on the One though.

@48 Imagine games like Swarm or other arcade games with multiple on screen characters.Everyone could have a go at the same time.Honestly, I cant see many games taking advantage of this.Maybe this would work with local and online tournaments.Kinect 2.0 can already associate multiple profiles with one controller...

Increasing the versatility of the system is a good thing.Having options cant hurt.

OT: a nice feature to have.

But in all seriousness, someone give #20 a medal! I've been asking for this since, well, forever it seems.

If they could bring back the one that was on the PSone (I believe?), where you unlocked MM's and then used them to enter races in a 'pool', and the winner took the lot home. I never did complete my collection. :(

I can't see this being used very much at all. The only kinda thing I can think of it working well is something like Scene it, or other party games in that style. I thought maybe something like Rock Band, but even on a 47" tv, I wouldn't want the lanes any smaller than they are now with a full band.

2 player split screen bothers me, so I probably wouldn't use it anyways.
