Grand Theft Auto Making Of Vid - "We Thought 'This is Shit'"
Written By
View author's profile

If you're as old as us lot, then you'll probably remember 1997's original Grand Theft Auto developed by Scottish outfit DMA Design. It started life as a straightforward cops and robbers game before growing into the crime spree you know and love today. With GTA V on the horizon (one day away), a revealing making of video lends an insight into how the first game almost never came to fruition.

Featuring interviews with the key players behind Grand Theft Auto, the video is the perfect way to kill almost eight minutes, and discover the difficulty DMA experienced behind the scenes, trying to get GTA finished and out of the door. It was almost killed several times, which means we'd have never have had GTA were it not for the Scottish dev.

Check out the Grand Theft Auto making of video below, courtesy of The Guardian, then keep your eyes peeled for our spoiler-free Grand Theft Auto V verdict right here, at 3pm BST on the dot.

Nailing Jelly to kittens is my new favourite saying. I will be sprinkling it liberally in my conversations this week.

Only other DMA game I can remember (that isn't a GTA one -though I couldn't say if they did GTA 2 or GTA London) was Body Harvest on the N64.

Great vid! What about GTA London though?

Would these titles ever get an XBLA release, I wonder? Pure nostalgia kick right there...

I wish Lemmings was as popular as GTA, it's much more enjoyable (to me).

It is a very disturbing prospect that in some alternate universe there is no GTA.

Well #10 if you believe in alternate dimensions I have a more disturbing thought There's a dimension where Jack Thompson likes and promotes GTA.

I'm so glad they didn't kill it. Even the original was great fun. I remember buying it on PS1 and gameboy, I was like 5-6 at the time and when my parents found out they took it back and swapped it for some boring racing game. Ahh the memories.

@8, If you have a Vita a new Lemmings game is coming out on that soonish. From what little has been shown it looks like it has potential.

This makes me want to go back and play GTA on the PS1. But I don't want to ruin any good memories. I made that mistake with Vice City and San Andreas thanks to steam.

Like I said before in a previous GTA Post I made, it would be AMAZING if Rockstar put the original playable GTA in the GTA 5, and you would play it kinda like how in GTA IV you go to a bar or pool hall and are able to play Quebed.

I can honestly say if they did do something like that, I would play it so much because the original GTA is by far a amazing classic. And forever change video games from that day forward since its release.

Vice City has the most style and substance, but it was pretty much GTA III with a new skin. I think San Andreas is the series' high point (up until tomorrow lol); it struck a perfect balance between new mechanics, gameplay variety, great story, massive world, and fun missions.

I disagree, I played both at the time and enjoyed them but saw nothing particularly revolutionary. GTA III is the one that changed video games forever. It was an absolute revolution and wake-up call for the gaming industry.

I loved and played both GTA and GTA 2 to death back on my PC. Kinda lost interest with GTA 3 and then picked up GTA IV and loved it all over again. I hope my copy of GTA V is already on the way to be delivered tomorrow=)

Honestly I was not fussed on the original. The only one I ever got into was San Andreas and that took a few attempts. Even so I am quite excited for the new one. Hope it lives upto my expectations

That has to be the funniest analogy I have heard in a while. I remember GTA coming out, and I was 18. Even at that age my parents were horrified I was playing a game like that haha. First violent game I had played and soon after Mortal Kombat. But it never made me violent. Had so much good fun with them, and would live to go back and play them again.
