GTA V: USB Play Disc Installation Bypasses Performance Issues
Written Tuesday, September 17, 2013 By Lee Bradley

Rockstar has advised GTA fans on Xbox 360 not to install the game’s “Play” disc to the HDD, but a no-disc solution has been found.

Installing GTA V's "Play" disc leads to performance problems including noticeable texture issues, but according to Digital Foundry, players should carry out the mandatory install and then install the “Play” disk to a USB flash drive instead.

This allows users to enjoy GTA V without having to rely on a disc, not only improving performance but also cutting down on the noise suffered by noisy older Xbox 360 models. Handy.

GTA V is out now. In our review Rich called it “maybe the most underwhelming release since Duke Nukem Forever.”

Only joking, he loved it.

That sucks considering I wanted to install it the usual way :/ cleared space on my hard drive especially for it.

I'm sure they'll patch it, Halo 3 and Skyrim had similar problems too, but they were both patched. I too install every game to the hard drive, but I'll wait for the fix before I do so with GTA V.

Do you know if this will be a fixable issue? Or should I go and buy a USB stick?

I got my copy yesterday and have been playing it installed to hard-drive. I have had no issues so far, so I'm leaving it installed.

Wait, if we don't need the disc, what's stopping people from just trading the game in after install

Im not saying this to hate on the game. Im playing it right now and love it.

But they should of tested this out before releasing. First game I know of that makes it worst to install to the HDD.

Besides graphical issues what are the other problems related with downloading it to your hdd? Cuz I downloaded it to hdd not worried about simple pop up and texture issues but when i see articles like this it scares me that there's more to it lol

TBF apparently Halo 3 did it as well; I say apparently, because a lot of us never actually noticed it.
I'll leave it uninstalled for now; with hope, it's a patchable issue. Though I'll remain on the pessimistic side.

You need at least a 16GB USB with at least 8GB free space.

Didn't intend on installing the play disc anyway. I have no issues with the DVD driver's reliability or noise.

I know this isn't entirely related but it seems a good place to ask this:

From what I've seen about the game you are required to install the first disk so that you can play the game only using the second disk.

Does this mean that you cannot install the second disk and have to put up with constant spinning, or can you also install the second disk so that it checks at the start then goes silent?

im installing the 2nd disc on a 16gb usb drive, i couldn't put up with the noise it was making, mine is a gears 3 console too so it's not old.

hopefully rockstar will sort out the problem at some point.

i remember when crackdown couldn't be installed and that got sorted.

#21 You can install the second disc, as long as it isn't on the same hard drive as the first disc.

This is mainly due to the fact, that, it doesn't work so great all being together on the same hard drive.

First disc install on primary hard drive, second disc install on external hard drive.

@20 Ah cheers dude, thanks for clearing that up. Guess I'll be buying a 16gb USB stick then, I can't stand the noise my 360 makes running games from the disc.

I don't even have flash drive this big LOL. Probably would need about 6-8GB one... I also always install games on my HDD. Just, because it's so big and I do believe my disc tray will work better and longer thanks to that. I guess this will one of the games I don't install, unless they actually manage to fix it sooner rather than later.

Is there anyway to use a SD flash card as storage rather than a USB. I don't have a USB big enough.

I installed my disc 2 and the only problem I've had so far is the game Froze on me once and I had to restart the game. But when I restarted it I decided to delete the disc 2 off my HDD and play off the CD. I did that for about 2 hours or so and got fed of with the noise, so I decided to re-install disc 2 and since I re-installed it for the second time I haven't had any issues at all.

But I've also been saving the game after Every mission I do. Cause you can use the Quick Save option in your cell phone in the game, and when you load it back up your literally in the same spot at where you quick saved it.

I never installed disc 2, and I still lag like crazy.
The textures popping up dont bother me nearly as much as lagging from anywhere between 5 seconds- 2 minutes does.. it's typically when I enter a new part of the map, and the name pops up in the corner, and i've tried dealing with it, but it's getting so frustrating.

I am at a total loss!

Got the GTA V yesterday, bought a brand new USB drive with it. Got home and installed the game to the USB drive. Put in the play disc afterwards and the game played perfectly.

Fast Forward to today............

I turned on the console, started up the game and I got the dreaded error, "Problem with storage device".

I formatted the drive and re-installed the game on the USB and the same error came up after I put in the play disc. I returned the USB drive and got another brand new one (16GB) I have tried 3 times and the error continues.

Any suggestions?
