Having broken away from Capcom two years ago to form his own studio called Comcept, Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune - whose other work includes games like Dead Rising and Onimusha - started a Kickstarter at the end of August for a spiritual successor to the Blue Bomber's exploits. It's called Mighty No. 9, and it aims to bring back classic 2D side-scrolling gameplay, Mega Man style.
"You play as Beck, the 9th in a line of powerful robots, and the only one not infected by a mysterious computer virus that has caused mechanized creatures the world over to go berserk," reads the Kickstarter page's description.
"Run, jump, blast, and transform your way through six stages (or more, via stretch goals) you can tackle in any order you choose, using weapons and abilities stolen from your enemies to take down your fellow Mighty Number robots and confront the final evil that threatens the planet!"
In essence, it looks like Mega Man with a new name. Hell, even new character Beck looks like Mega Man and has a cannon arm like his predecessor. Beck can also transform into various shapes and earn new weapons and attachments by defeating bosses for new skills and abilities.
Having surpassed the $900,000 target set for the game and gone beyond its $2.2 million stretch goal, an Xbox 360 version of Mighty No. 9 will be coming in spring 2015. Should the stretch goal exceed $3.3 million, there'll be extra levels, modes and an Xbox One version. There's 14 days left for Mighty No. 9's Kickstarter.
