Xbox One: You Can Run a PS4 Through It If You Like
Written By
View author's profile

If you were so inclined, you could get your Xbox One together with a PS4, according to Xbox Senior Director of Product Management and Planning Albert Penello, suggesting that you could even be playing Ryse and Killzone at the same time, if you liked.

Practically any HDMI device can be plugged into the console's HDMI pass-through port, with the primary function being for cable TV and the like, but there's no reason you couldn't snap between Xbox One and PS4 games should you hook up Sony's console. "Any application can be snapped to a game…this could be the live TV feed, so if you wanted to be playing Ryse and Killzone at the same time, you could snap that," Penello confirmed at TGS.

We're pretty sure you'd be unable to use your Xbox One controller or Kinect with the plugged in PS4, however. That would just be completely insane. Xbox One is out on November 22nd in 13 markets, and will be available elsewhere in 2014.

@9 so the snap mode is when it takes roughly 1/3 of the screen and puts it into its own thing like how we seen twitch tv, or the Skype app working so what they are saying is your xb1 will be playing and on the right hand side you would have the ps4 running on the same tv

@7 not everyone has an amp with hdmi pass through. And some older HD TV's only have 1 hdmi socket.. So this is a good thing really for people not wanting to spend another couple of hundred quid in a new tv.

It's cheaper to spend $10 to get a HDMI switcher. Before I got it, the non pay-tv HDMI got switched to whichever console or bluray player I wanted to use.
Now I have a nice fancy LG 3D TV, so I just use the switcher as a way to join to HDMI cables to make it easier to plug in any PC or laptop.
For me, the Xbox One using a huge amount of resources for all this switching and stuff is a big waste of power, just to replicate a bunch of things every other gadget I have also does.

@17, yes not everyone has an amp... but you know what they say. This is trying to be a jack of all trades but ends up being a master of none.

I have more that one HDMI source on my tv (excluding games consoles) so this feature becomes useless. Plus they want people to keep their 360s so that alone takes up the 1 input. Either do it well or don't bother!

According to "anonymous developers", we don't have to worry about running a PS4 through the Xbox One. The graphics drivers for the Xbox One allow the PS4 to run over it...repeatedly...and sarcastically apologize every time it does.

Speaking of, anyone notice a lack of response from Microsoft on that issue?

Haha why would anyone try that? Rack up a massive energy bill by turning on your ps4 and One at the same time and letting it run while you can only play one thing at a time XD

But would be fun if it's possible. Now they controller needs to be crossplay too :D

@28 but that's the only way to connect a PS4 to a TV and play good launch games. Cause without the X1 involved it's not possible. Sony needs to jump on this just like every other feature they rip off

i could but why would i do it when it saves a hell of alot of power by turning the xboxone off and using one of the 3 other hdmi ports on my tv instead, whats that because i can then play 2 consoles at once, but i can do that already with picture in picture really is a pointless waste of electricity

Told you. Gen after this will probably see no "primary consoles," just Microsoft and Sony putting out different versions of the same beast (basically like DVD players). Well, aside from the Nintendo console, assuming they don't take a nose dive and end up being just a game developer.

As interesting as it sounds, it does have quite the concerning limitations. For example: Why the fuck would you do this? I do see the point in it. But to have have Killzone: Shadow Fall and Ryse play at the same time? (Both look good BTW, although I have am concerned with Ryse.) My electric bill will rise to the roof! It does make sense if you buy both consoles and if you have a brother or sister and you both like different consoles, but other than that, there really isn't much purpose.

Hmm...may use this, maybe not. Anytime my PS3 is on, I also run my 360 just for the party chat feature. And seeing as how most of my friends are going with an Xbox One and not a PS4, I'll probably still be running both consoles at the same time. I could just keep using them on seperate tvs like I do now, but this would let me hook up my PS4 (or satellite) alongside my xbox and run all 3 at once.

We shall see.

All new TV's normally have many hdmi ports so you really don't need to plug it directly into the console. Unless it's quicker in changing channels. But I will plug the 360, 100%. This Penello sounds ok.

Just get an HDMI switch for $20. Why spend $500 to use the Xbone, better yet if you do own both why turn them both on to do the same thing a switch could do?

Wasting energy I say. Wasting Money too. It's a unneeded feature.

I just don't really get the need. Because I would assume your Xbox One would need to be on in order to use it this way. Unless the HDMI ports actually act like a splitter than I suppose it may not need to be on. Don't get me wrong this isn't a bad feature or a feature I don't care about. If the Xbox doesn't need to be on in order to do this than that is pretty awesome. If it does that's less attractive. Personally if I need to swap device I'll stand up and switch them on the TV myself. However the convenience factor is nice and I'm pretty sure there are people out there with setups that make it nearly impossible to get to the back of their TV.

Even though I'm personally going PS4 I do quite like this. Good work Microsoft, keep focusing on the good cool features.

Pretty cool feature. I for one would probably have had my Xbox 360 running through it. But I would assume that you need the Xbone powered on in order for the pass-through to work? If not, then great... I'd plug my 360 into it. If not, meh.. I'll just swap out the HDMI cables on my TV.

Lmao how can anyone think this is a good idea,I've a better solution just unplug the HDMI cable off your X1 and put your PS4 cable in its place.
Same result but saving you a bucket load of money on electric bills, plus it will take you seconds to do.

Why people are suggesting to get a switcher, or not seeing the point in this is beyond me. If your TV only has one HDMI port, and you own an Xbox One, you can make use of that second HDMI port on the console. No need to buy a switcher.

That way you can play your PS4 games whilst getting notifications about your XB1 games. So you can get notified when an online match is ready for you to join, or something.

This means I can take 1 of my 360s and connect it through my XB1,

Then I was buy AC4 Black flag for each system.. Then as I finish a mission on 360 I can snap to XB1 and finish the same mission..

therefore I can literally unlock both achievements list at the same time..

Or maybe hire a driver in forza4 or 5, snap to opposite console and play another game ... I like it!!

... What happens if you connect an XB1 to a XB1? or chain like 3 together. OR 5.. *mind blown*

For those that say they are getting both the PS4 & Xbone.
WTF! If your going to spend around $1000.00 on consoles then why wouldn't you just buy a gaming PC & be done with it?
let me guess you all own that too?
I have always chosen one platform & stayed with it myself as most do I'm certain. That's why you have the debates of Xbone vs PS4 most people are only going with one or the other.
