Grand Theft Auto Online Microtransaction Pricing Leaks
Written By
View author's profile

UK pricing for Grand Theft Auto Online's reported microtransactions spotted yesterday in code on Rockstar's official site has leaked today, suggesting that the in-game credit cards available for purchase will cost between £1.99 and £13.49, granting in-game cash of between $100,000 and $1,250,000 to play with.

The prices come courtesy of people who've been given early access to the mode, ahead of any kind of official word from Rockstar. Apparently, money has much greater value in GTA Online than in it does in GTA V single-player, with the most expensive property in GTA Online costing $400,000. By comparison, GTA V's golf club costs $150,000,000.

Here are the microtransaction values in full:

  • $100,000 Red Shark Cash Card - £1.99
  • $200,000 Tiger Shark Cash Card - £3.49
  • $500,000 Bull Shark Cash Card - £6.99
  • $1,250,000 Great White Shark Cash Card - £13.49

You can only own a single property in GTA Online, and while they cost less - as do vehicles - things like weapon and car mods will cost much more, and in some cases can only be unlocked at certain ranks. This means that the microtransaction packs could offer less of an advantage than you might expect.

No doubt there'll be more details on this, and other Grand Theft Auto Online features ahead of its activation within Grand Theft Auto V on October 1st.

@6 I think it's a bit early to say that, but it's certainly likely. We're obviously not just talking about cosmetic upgrades, so Pay to Win is looking more and more like it's going to feature in GTA:O, and that's really, really disappointing - especially given the money they're raking in from the game itself. This is completely unnecessary.

Before anyone says 'they need to keep the servers running' - servers are actually pretty cheap to run, and in this case, no they don't. GTA:O is Peer-to-Peer. No expensive servers required.

@7 If you read between the lines, you can see a despite "FIRST"

OT: I am assuming that money is the equivalent of xp, as it was in GTAIV; these microtransactions seem just a little cheap to me.

Presumably, the money you earn in single player transfers to Online... Meaning if you sit on your arse for 20 hours a day, you never need to pay for money Online

My issue here, is multiplayer microtransactions. Depending on how this can apply to bettering yourself in what you can do on the online mode, it can be more pay-to-win if the stuff you can buy is very unforgiving to people that are newer to it.

@13 Just because they're optional to use, doesn't mean we shouldn't complain about them. Right now it's looking to be pay-to-win, which means everyone who does use them, is richer, owns more things than you and looks like a better player than you despite doing nothing to earn it. I don't care about using them, it's the other people who use them that's going to screw people over with their expensive overpowered weapons.

@13 @14 that's very true. Except in many cases where games require micro transactions, it's not actually true in practice, because the game is often hampered to the point where you have to pay to make any progress.

It has no place in any kind of competitive multiplayer - paying real money for an advantage over the competition creates a divide in the community between those who can afford it and those who can't. What happened to competition being fair!?

Quite honestly, I don't care how they make it work - with the amount of money they are making from selling the game they have no moral grounds to include any kind of micro transactions. It's pure money grabbing, and it's what I expect from the big 3, not from Rockstar. It's really disappointing.

Lol this is not even confirmed yet and people are talking about selling their games.

If you read correctly in terms of pay to win most things are rank locked anyway.
So you still have to rank up to get them things.

Still this don;t belong in gta for sure.

@8 Can I ask how exactly it is pay 2 win? Unless weapons cost hundreds of thousands of dollars(if so, then I'll come back to this post and admit I'm wrong, yeah yeah), I don't see how this is pay 2 win in any way.

I'm fine with this, and I may even buy one to get some cash from the start. It's optional, and they have said from interviews on CVG, that the majority of your money spent will simply go to buying houses.

I think this is ok. If I only made 1 billion dollars in the first 48 hours I would siphon those 20 million early adopters dry too.

Pretty strange business decision. They are on track to go from everyones favourite/most talked about developer right now, to money hungry jerks in the blink of an eye.

@24 'things like weapon and car mods will cost much more' effectively if you pay, you can buy whatever weapon mods you choose, whereas everyone else will only be able to afford a selected few.

IF I play this game, it will be SP only and R* can stick the MP and MT's where the sun don't shine. Will also be very hesitant buying R* games in the future out of principle.

@24 We don't know that it's Pay to Win yet, what we're saying is that it's looking very likely.

Within each tier there are going to be multiple weapons - the chances are the cash allows you to skip playing the game to get them early, making it (in theory) easier to rank up and get to the next tier.

Until GTA:O is launched we don't know whether it's Pay to Win or not.

What we do know is that Rockstar don't need to be doing this at all. It's a cash grab, and not something that I would expect from a such a respected developer given the amount of money they're making just by selling the base game.

@29 Can you not read?
Items are also rank locked.

So no one is going to be paying to win.

If you get to level 50 you get the same stuff as me and as someone who buys cash.

Difference is the person buying cash can buy more of what unlocks at their respective rank.

Your making it sound like a level 0 can buy cash with real life money and get the best stuff right away.

Stop over playing it.
Sure this is not needed and a joke but so is overplaying this to worse than it is.

I've played plenty of free-to-play games and never had issues with "pay to win". I think most achievement hunters who complain about micro transactions are either acting entitled or are just bad at the game.

In the end, sure you can complain about an optional feature. That's your right. You still look like a tool though and definitely factor into the minority.

Why are some so eagerly defending it. If it turns out to be pay for fun instead of pay for win it wont be so bad (although still deplorable considering how much profit was made already). The above users are just saying they hope it is not pay to win.

@33 buying these packs allows you to get the best gear at every rank = rank up quicker = get more gear.

@33 I can read. Can you? I specifically took into account the fact that the items are rank-locked. Maybe I didn't explain myself properly.

To explain more clearly, I envisage it working like this:

Perform tasks/activities to gain XP and ranks.

At each rank, items/weapons/upgrades are available to purchase, with varying costs depending on quality.

tasks/activities will provide higher rewards at each rank, so as you rank up you will be able to afford the basic items for your new rank, then over time you earn more cash and can afford the better items until you rank up again and restart the process.

Therefore, the time taken to rank up would be significantly shortened if the best weapons for your rank were available right from the start because you purchased a cash pack with real world money.

However, as I also stated, we don't KNOW this - it's idle speculation.

Of course this is just my opinion. If everyone would not buy into micro-transactions it would die-out.
I hate that the gaming industry is leaning towards the less-content for more-money scenario of MMO's & pay-cheating from micro-transactions.
More Adds$$$, more TV services$$$, more Apps$$$, more MMO's$$$$$, more micro-transactions$$$$
We could put an end to it by not buying into it people!

Well, we know the blemish on this game now then. Pay to win has made it's way onto a game like this, a game that made a profit on day one, a completely unnecessary feature, we need to see how things with it run properly, how 'balanced' it is with the game, but I'm not expecting anything really good from this, the games only really going to receive flack from this move.

I understand it to mean it will give you the money to buy a good house or car early, if weapons and car mods unlock with your level through ranking then the money doesn't give advantage. You will still have to play and win with the same kit available to everyone else to rank up and be able to use your 'purchased' money to buy newly unlocked stuff.

That's what I take it as anyway, don't see a big problem with it being there for those that want it, seems to me like the dead space 3 which hunt all over again. Just giving my opinion...putting it out there.

I'm seeing a lot of hypocrisy here. EA had microtransactions in Mass Effect 3 and Dead Space 3, and in ME3, it was basically to buy lottery tickets. Then you throw in the fact you could buy the same things with in-game money, and in DS3's case, there was an area where you could farm a ton of in-game currency which the developer put in there just for farming purpose. And finally... Both games were co-op, where you work with other people to defeat the computer, so it didn't matter who paid real money or game money. But no, everyone whined and complained, foaming at the mouth calling EA greedy and ruining both games forever.

Now you have Rockstar, who wants real money to give people an advantage in a versus game, and people are cool with it. I notice people let them get away with Day 1 DLC as well (Max Payne 3 had many DLC packs announced before it was released, everyone was like "Awesome!" but when Ubisoft did that weeks before, it was "Ubisoft is such a horrible company for announcing DLC before the game's release!!!").

@51 That's the depressing truth about gamers these days. They like GTA and other shooter based action series to much to put a company to the grindstone. They give Rockstar and CoD a pass because they love those games. I agree about the Mass Effect 3 and Dead Space 3 microtranactions. In a co op game they matter way less, especially in those games where you can easily buy the microtranaction stuff by playing the game. I bought some packs in Mass Effect 3 because I support packs that can be purchased with in game or real money in a co op game. In Dead Space 3 I never needed to buy a pack because I don't really support mostly singleplayer microtransactions. I do applaud Dead Space 3 however for making the microtranactions largely pointless.

I love gaming but I feel some gamers are just too willing to let certain companies squeeze them and everyone else of their money. I'm just really hoping Rockstar didn't make a pay to win model here. I like Rockstar, and I would like believe they have a tad more integrity than to make their online pay to win.

As much as I hate this kinda thing, Rockstar would be stupid not to do some kind of micro transactions. It's basically free money from people stupid enough (or just impatient enough) to use them. All they have to do on their end is change a number and they get paid for it!

That said, I don't think it's much of an issue here. It hardly seems to be "Pay-to-Win" more like "Pay-to-get-something-you-could-get-for-free-a-bit-quicker"

it may be an unfair advantage, but what about the people with no jobs or social life, banging it out for 12 hours a day? some people cant do that, so paying a few quid for a bit of cyber money could help the people like me, who can only play a few hours a day. im not saying i will buy it, because i wont, but its nice to have the option. i think the ones complaining, are the bang outs who want something to show for sitting on their arse all day, so they can brag that they are in the top thousand on a meaningless leaderboard, rather than someone with a real life, who can afford a few quid, getting the better stuff without playing as much.

Yes I'm sure Rockstar put this in feature in mere hours after they made a billion dollars, solely to inconvenience you people.
Wake up morons, Rockstar don't receive that whole billion dollars and this would have been decided ages ago - and more than likely not by Rockstar, but by the big corporate heads of Take two.

So what if they made a billion dollars in 48 hours?

This is cutthroat capitalism, baby!

When are people going to finally understand that corporations and the very wealthy do not have a concept of the word 'enough'.

There's a comic book out there called Cerebus. The main character at one point is made Prime Minister and then asked if he could have any amount of money, what would it be. His response:

"All of it."

When it's clarified that the person was asking for an actual amount, Cerebus replies:

"All of it. Everything you have."

This is more or less the mindset of the common capitalist.

I really don't understand why people get so pissed about micro transactions. No one is holding you down and making you buy it. Sometimes you can get a little bit of an advantage by buying them but seeing as how this is just for in game money I really don't see what the big deal is since you can get quite a bit of money in the game without putting in a whole lot of effort.

I don't think I will ever need to actually spend money in retail games like these. Never have, but even if I wanted something really bad and right away, what is $5-$10 nowadays. Price of one meal? Unless most of you are kids that have budget (and shouldnt even be playing M rated game), I don't see how this is an issue. And that is coming from a guy who is pretty strained for cash lately (bought my last 2 games Blacklist and GTA V using $100 gift certificate, so only paid $20 or I could never afford them LOL)

Sorry for the double post IS pay to win. This is why. People with more $$$ in game can buy more body armor, ammo, and car upgrades like bulletproof tires & car armor & turbo, etc. when u die u can simply buy all that stuff again, thus paying to win/have a big advantage over every1 else. This is bad news.

I can't see the problem. You either just earn the cash in-game or, choose to spend real money to acquire in-game cash. It is possible that some players might gain some advantage but, that won't make them unbeatable. Any decent player online won't need to rely on specific items to do well. Some people will always find something to whine about!!

@61 Exactly! It's up to consumers to decide what to buy. I'm not the biggest fan of the model, but I won't condemn it. Capitalism allows companies to work and sell whatever they want however they want. Last time I checked, Rockstar is a development company, not a non-profit.

@40 That doesn't work for products where the profit margin is 99,9%+
Actually I think it saves them money to include MTs since they don't have to balance the progression system that much.

@63 People hate it for different reasons, a few of them being:
- Cheats without codes but money. Ever since online gaming existed people tried to gain an unfair advantage. It was called cheating. With MTs they can easily do that by just paying a bit.
- MTs unbalance the loot/reward system and gameplay progression. Often when MTs are included the progression is streched out to encourage people more to bu stuff. Gameplay in itself is more laid out to tempt ou into buying stuff. Compare Diablo3 PC with auction house with the console version without and tell me which one is the more rewarding fun experience
- MTs reduce your dedication. Back then when we played hard games like Contra, Ghouls n Ghosts, ... would we have sticked to the game as much as we had if we could just simply buy our way to victory. With MT I would always have the thought in my mind that a game is not hard to be a fun rewarding challenge but only to make you buy into the better gear to make this easier. I would probably not stick to a game. It psychology, kinda like when games tell you if you want to switch down to easy if you died on hard 3 times in a row, but only this time its do you want to buy power armor x for only 0,99$. That is annoying and an insult to a gamer.
- In game rewards make you something special. With MT you are not special, when you put time and skill in while someone else who just spend money. How would soldiers feel if everyone could buy a Medal of Honor for 4,99$ at the local store or actors if you could just buy an Oscar. Would you like achievements to become buyable for 0,99$ per ach?
These rewards for outstanding accomplishments are invalueable if everybody has them.

Google about the psychology of Free to play, it will explain that better than I did. Point is: Microtransactions make your game worse, no matter if you buy them or not.

@65 Just because you have money doesn't mean you should throw it out of the window. We need responsible costumers that tell companies with their purchases what we want and what we don't. Even though that doesn't work with MTs since its like nearly impossible to not turn a profit in if you already covered the development costs of a game with the retail price- At least you can vocalize your point

I don't think many people will use this and either way, I like earning my stuff in games through hard work and not by throwing some money at it :P

@#70 No it won't matter what I do, but or not buy. This is just extra on top of MP. You will eventually make all this money if you put enough time in the game and they are just offering shortcuts. Even if only 100 ppl bought this worldwide like ever, they would still be making money, so it really pointless not to buy something you might actually want just to try and prove a point that is doomed to fail... In any case, like I said I don't have money to throw around, but if I was to decide and spend $10 once on extra money in game, that wouldn't be such a big deal right?

honestly, when it comes to microtransactions, i really don't worry too much, i mean in ME3 i spend (Msp) on packs, in defiance i buy bits. i earn my money & im happy to spend it where ever i like. my problem with this article & certain comments (not neccessarily in this article) about the MTs is that people are quick to condemn other developers for using them, but because this is gta, "oh, well i think this is a great idea".

again i commend R* for doing a fantastic job with this game, & to an extent, the MTs do make sense.

im not trolling or whatever, i really do like reading about gta5 because of how well its been doing. so i thought id put my opinion on here.

hope people get where im coming from.

If any other company had it's name on this you all would be bitching and saying stupid shit about selling the game or burning your disc. Idiots like you are why these companies are allowed to slide it further up our asses, as long as R* is the lube it's a little easier to take huh?

Hopefully once I start playing, there will be kids running around with hundreds of thousands of dollars in their pockets that i can take from their corpses after I kill them. At least one advantage, eh? Imagine spending over $20 to get all that in-game money only to have it immediately taken from you like that..

This website used to be much more helpful and friendly.

Looking at the top comments on this board is pathetic. How many trolls want to sound cool by bashing on #1?

#'s 3, 5, 7, 9 plus many more that I don't care to read.... none of your posts were at all necessary.

Microtransactions are ruining console games. I understand their need on free cell phone games, but on a game that I am already paying $60+tax on is ridiculous. Why you sheeple pay for this stuff makes no sense. All you're doing is making companies think it's O.K. to charge more for stuff that should be made free in-game.

Rockstar has already made over a billion dollars on this game, why are they charging real money for in-game money?

@81 I'll keep paying for it, if I like the game. I see nothing wrong with paying for currency in-game.
It's only the disc locked content that I will not pay for.

I don't think its pay-to-win, its pay to advance slightly quicker, but I'm guessing will be less fun than doing jobs for cash.
Cant believe Rockstar have this, they are usually so good to avoid cash-ins :/
