Resident Evil 5 Becomes Capcom’s Best-Selling Game Ever

Resident Evil 5 has become Capcom’s best-selling game ever, outstripping the legendary Street Fighter II.

Except it kinda hasn’t really. Resi 5 may have sold 6.5 million copies across PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, compared to SFFII’s 6.3 million on Super Nintendo, but that only tells half the story as SFII released on just about every single platform ever.

Regardless, the way Capcom calculates it puts Resident Evil 5 ahead of the competition with a truly impressive number. Check out Capcom’s chart of every one of its million plus selling games through here. Looks like Resi 6 may catch up with its predecessor before long.

The news comes as Capcom reports a increase in sales of 16.9 per cent to ¥53bn (£336m) for the half year ending September 30th. The company’s net income also climbed 20 per cent to ¥4.95bn (£31m).

But whatever, Street Fighter II is still miles better than Resident Evil 5 though, right? We’re all agreed on that? Guys?

  • We have nobody to blame but ourselves for this..
  • I enjoyed this one, despite never playing of the others, while 6 was crap.
  • Dino Crisis at #15! Loved that game, remake/reboot please!
  • Suprising kinda since this isnt everyones favorite RE title. But still, I loved this game all the same and its cool to know a RE game is on top for capcom.
  • Surprised that RE4 isn't the resident evil game that sold the most. Considering it's on PC/PS2/GameCube/Wii/Xbox360/PS3. Resident Evil 5 was the last of the series that i actually enjoyed. 6 was garbage, Racoon City wasn't that good, and i couldn't really get into Revelations.
  • RE5 wasn't the horror game that most people wanted, but still was a great action game that used elements from the awesome RE4. RE6 was just...crap. Sold that one immediately after 1000ing it.
  • *Smiles* This is pretty good news i enjoyed 5, 6 and all the other resi games i played, they may have starved from the scary factor of late, but i still enjoy them and i wish more people would be more supportive of the series and give some possitive and helpful feedback instead of just criticizing every small negative.
  • Resi 5 was rather enjoyable so many people keep complaint about them but I've loved them all.
  • those charts are stupid, 3 different versions of res evil 4 on there, why not combine them into one it's at 5.8mil then and that doesn't include 360 or ps3 also a rerelease or resevil 1-3 more than welcomed
  • I had a lot of fun with 5, I just remember dying a lot because of how slow you run, the aiming system and not being able to roll. Then 6 comes out and you can do both of those things but the story was lacking. Come on Capcom, put it together.
  • The only gripe I have with Capcom is the RIDICULOUS amount they charge for their dlc.I was SO looking forward to DoA Ultimate. They left out so much.
  • RE5 had its moments. The whole bulkhead section for instance. It's opening camera shot that shows you the exit and pulls back and flips around showing you the trials you're about to endure is better than all of Splinter Cell Conviction's attempts at the same thing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWo_-wQmoPg 4 minute mark.
  • #3: I remember DC being great but who knows how it holds up. All I remember is that you went to an underground lab at some point (sound familiar?). It broke away from RE1-3's fixed camera deal by having the camera tracking along with you which was nice.
  • Resi 5 was the first next-gen Resi game at the time, so it's not surprising really considering how popular 4 was and the high expectations all around. Also, there was the 'Gold' version of Re5 with the Story DLC thrown in so that was a bonus, they could've done with story DLC for 6 but whatever.
  • I didn't ask for this.
  • Resi 5 was awesome. I think I beat it like 3 times with different friends. Resi 6 wasn't as good, but still enjoyable=)
  • RE5 was good. But my favorites will always be Resident Evil Remake, Resident Evil 2, and Resident Evil 4.
  • & Resi 4 is only at #24. On the Wii. World, what's going on?!
  • So if Resident Evil 2 is their 4th best, selling 4.96 million... why have they not milked it for all it's worth and released a remake?
  • Yeh... that's kinda bullshit... I'm pretty sure I remember Capcom saying that DmC Devil May Cry was the best selling of the series (despite it being seen as a failure to them) and yet, allot of the other DmC games beat it... RE5 is not their best selling, and no mannor of false bull shit figure's will make me believe it, there isn't a chance in hell it could get close to beating SF2.
  • As mentioned in the article, we dont know what Capcom base these on. Is the platforms mentioned on their site the only sales, cause if so SF2 was on everything ever made, ever. Even Amstrad, C64 etc
  • In all honesty, I'm not a Street Fighter fan, so I actually DO prefer RE5 over SF2. It's a great game to play co-op with a friend, and Mercenaries mode is always fun. RE5 wasn't perfect, but it was still a good game, with few major glitches and visually still holds up after 4 years. I'm happy it's managed to make it. Still a low seller compared to the likes of so many other games on the market, but still enough to show people enjoy the series still. And it kinda shows Capcom are making some more money, hopefully enough to lift them out of their financial slump.
  • I don't think any resident evil can out do Resident Evil 4
  • I'll never understand the hatred for RE5. I loved it! It was my favorite game that year. I played though difficulty but got stuck on professional. I though it's play mechanics were the best of the series even if it wasn't the scariest game of the bunch.
  • RE5 multiplayer was so damn fun. Spent hours on that. Do a lot of people still play it? I'm talking about the competitive multiplayer.
  • more evidence that the majority of people are sheep. this game was TERRIBLE!!!in all aspects. take the blinders off!!!
  • I attribute a lot of this to resident evil 4s success and people being excited for the sequel to it. But if there not counting SF2 multi console sales than there probably not counting Resi 4 being sold on multiple consoles either
  • I won't lie: I prefer RE4, 5 and 6 to the old-style REs. I have played them, and just can't abide the controls and camera angles. I loved RE5, and RE6 was my favorite game of 2012.
  • Wasn't the original SFII only on the SNES for home consoles? I thought it was only the enhancements like Championship Edition/Turbo/Super that started appearing on other consoles. If their list is as precise as separating out the different versions of RE4, then it would make sense that only the original SFII is what counts for the amount of copies sold, no?
  • Resi 5 is awesome. Bought it twice myself.
  • It's a shame that this has happened ... Because now they will think that resident evil 5 was good and in all truth it was rubbish and 6 was worse .... I am gutted because resident evil games are my favorite games .... They need to go back to the way the game was first time round and forget the direction they are heading
  • Baaaa!!!!!
  • Goodbye all hope of them making a real resi game again :( REmake, 2 and 3 are soo much better than the TPS style games. If they remade those and dino crisis, maybe even hd ports of outbreak, my faith in Capcom would be restored
  • Not ashamed to admit I Actually enjoyed Resi Evil 5
  • Go game only thing could make it better is to shoot and reload while moveing.
  • I love this game, I'm still missing one damn achievement though:/
  • @12 DOA is not a Capcom game...
  • I liked RE4 better but still this was a great game in my book. Well sort of.
  • If they were able to do RE4 (Gamecube, PS2, Wii and 360) I'd have thought that would beat this out. Resi 5 was decent enough but Resi 4 was very, very good.
  • Sadly the 5th game is my favorite
